You have forgotten that not every calorie has the same amount of nutrients, vitamins, and essential amino acids attached to its prrofile.  A person who only junk food will lack these essential elements so they will have less energy then a person who eats the same number of calories in a balanced diet or just plain fruits, legums, and veggies.  Its not that complicated.

You need to step back and think about what you are putting into your body per calorie consumed.

Have you ever noticed that a lot of vegetarians and vegans look pale, lethargic or just plain sick?  Its because a lot of them do not eat enough greens or the wrong greens so they are anemic.  They might eat 1600 calories a day but I can eat the same amount of calroies while looking healthier and feeling better while still staying a vegetarian.  Err kind of a vegetarian.  I stil munch down on finger foods at parties.

alright. i will be blunt. hmarcos: i'm a vegan, and so was my last boyfriend. after we broke up, i rebounded with a guy who was definitely not a vegan. and yes, my vegan ex-boyfriend "tasted" much better ;)

I go through vegetarian phases and my ex-girlfriend would comment on the taste as well.  I don't get the bio-chemical reason but vegetarians do have a different taste and smell.  I would prefer that my next girlfriend does not eat red meat and very little poultry.

.. we've slowly progressed to only eating a few types of animals... and some of us choose none, and it is shown that if everyone were vegetarian the environment around us would get better... so in choosing a life partner to start a family with and progress into the future with I do think this is important. - bodabaib

One of the great fallacies of the vegetarian movement is their proposed environmental benefits.  The actual truth is that monoculture farms are also extremely harmful to the environment.  One of the major cornerstones of vegetarian diets, soy beans, are usually GMOs and also receive heavy chemical treatments depsite its GMO status.

I have never run the #s but I have read articles that demonstrate that a MEDIUM sized mixed farm has net postive impact on the local environment.  A medium size farm is basically a large family farm.  I froget the acreage.  These mixed farms also include animals.  Pigs, cows, sheep, goats, chicken and other fowl have evolved with humans.  Removing these animals from the farm would be catastrophic for the local environments.  In order for vegetarian dogma to fix the environment it would rquire the mass slaughter of BILLIONs of animals.

The only real debate about the environment when vegetarianism is concerned is whether mega farms or mega feed lots are more destructive to the environment.  Mega-farms have a less harmful impact but that does not mean that the environmental problems we face are cured by turning the world over to monoculture crops.

O and I've never really understook vegans and honey.  Dont' they realize that bees are used to pollinate most of the food crops in the world?  Anyway, good thread.

Dagicat - a strict 'vegan' would never consider your friend a fellow vegan.  Most hardcore Vegans are as difficult to reason with as evangelical christians.  I prefer to avoid them all together.  They do have one thing in common though.  Neither understands evolution.

Fruitarianism seems like a hard diet to maintain especially if its taken to the lifestyle level.  Do you live in plastic or steel houses?

O well, I'm a vegetarian 95% of the time.  Every now and again I eat poultry.  I forget the last time I made meat though.

Chargrilled Chick-fil-a is a great choice.  Especially if you can tolerate it w/o any toppings.  Check out the calories and all that good stuff but it is certainly healthier than Jack in the Box.  Also I think Chick-fil-a had fruit as a side.

If you are able to do this try brining in plain yogurt, granola, and an all natural fruit preserve.  Yogurt Parfaits have a lot of healthy calories in em.
Weight Loss Muscle growth for Woman Oct 16 2007

At 1200 calories / day your body will most definitely start to breakdown muscle tissue for fuel especially if you are doing cardio on your workout days. You will lose weight but you will also lose lean muscle mass and that's bad because lean muscle mass is "metabolically active" -- it actually burns more calories just because it's muscle. The scenario you described sounds dangerous. I would advise no more than a 30% daily calorie deficit while weight-training.

You can also do a "zig-zag" routine with 3 days below maintenance and 1 day above, this will help you spare lean muscle tissue and lose the highest amount of fat while still keeping your lean muscle mass.

BTW, If you are trying something like this I find doing regular body fat % measurements (either with a scale or (preferably) skin calipers) will help you get a better idea of what % of pounds lost are coming from fat vs. muscle.

I second this post.  You are already flirting with starvation calorie levels and with added activity you are most likely forcing your body into protecting itself from you.  If this is the case then you will lose both muscle and fat.  I would not be surprised if you will lose mineral density in your bones as well as teeth.  1200 calories a day is the recomended baseline for a reason.

You have also not said your height and weight.  If you are for example 5'8" or taller your body will need more calories per day than someone who is 5'1".  This is why at 6'4" I can eat 2500 calories and still lose weight.  I'm also a guy and work out 2-5 days a week at various levels but mainly cardio until I burn away the fat.  I'm not worried about the muscle loss.  This is not an issue for me since I consume on average 150g of protein a day.  80 g is from whey protein shakes but I also consume around 70-100 through my diet.

The only way to burn that fat away is through diet and cardio.  Sit ups will only pull your weakened abs back into 'alignment'.  When I was really out of shape I could barely do 10 sit ups and my stomach stuck out about 5 inches from my waste when I'd sit down. Yes, I measured.  I was also a size 38.  After about 9 months of Tae Kwon Doe and 4 months of dieting and more excercise my stomach is down to 2 inches and I'm back to wearing size 36 but could squeeze into a 34 but die in the process.  I've also lost around 20 pounds since May.

I noticed my stomach looked tighter after getting up to 50 real sit ups at a time.  Eventually I would do up to 100 that way and if I was up for it do another 50-100 variations.  Honestly I rarely had the stomach strength to do more than a 100 but it just took time.  Now my abs do look tighter but I still have another 20-25 pounds of body fat to lose.

I hate to say this but you are either very mistaken or a liar.  As people have stated that much muscle gain is nearly impossible.  It might be possible for a month if you are on an elite routine with a personal chef and 'supplements'.

Do you even break a sweat at that pace?

Anyway like everyone has said you need to respond to what your body wants and needs.  I don't mean give into a craving.  If you feel tired and lethargic then you need to eat otherwise your body will start to take protien from healthy muscle and use it to repair damaged muscle.

The basic rule is the more you work out the more you can eat.

Grr...  What is your age or year and do you have a  meal plan?  Are you on a restricted budget?  How much can you spend on food a week?  Do you go out a lot to happy hour?

And breakfast can be as simple as strawberry preserves, yogurt, and granola i.e. a yogurt parfait.  If done at the correct servings its close to 400 calories.  And it takes a grand total of 2 minutes to make and clean.
Weight Loss is there a quick way to lose weight healthily? Oct 07 2007

IMO, its best to start with your height, weight, age, and activity level.  If you are totally sedentary then its time to move around.  Start to move and then look at your diet.

Start to read labels and find out what the chemicals mean.  It might make you reconsider the junk.  I will only eat imported chocholate now so I don't eat much chocolate at all.  American Chocolate is actually not considered chocolate in Europe.  American companies do not use enough Cocoa in their mixes and Cocoa is what makes chocolate chocolate.

I only go down the junk isle to buy pretzels.  I do not put anyting esle in my cart and I don't even consider anything else.  I only go down the soda isle if i need something to mix with vodka and I rarely drink vodka now so I'm never in that isle either.  If you have a problem isle do not even go down it.  If you feel drawn to the isle then you'll have to actually face whatever attraction you have for that particular food.  Find out what it is and then break yourself of the habit.

O and absolutely no fast food!!!  If you love fast food then use it as a treat.  Its ridiculously unhealthy for you.

Do you feel healthy?  Can you do a cardio excercise with out feeling light headed?  Do you bruise easily?  If you answer yes to the first two and no to the second then you are doing fine for now.

Have you considered adding beans to your diet?  And I don't mean soy beans.  I'm not a fan of soy beans.  Are there any raw food stores in your area?  There is one around me and I personally think the food is disgusting but it is also ridiculously healthy.

Also you need to consider your size.  40 g of proten a day for me will force my body to eat itself to repair muscle damage but I am 6'4" 235.  I also could not eat 1500 a day on a consistent basis and still work out.  I foudn this out the hard way.

And honestly on this kind of diet the best way to do it is to get blood work and find out if you are dangerously low on any essential vitamin etc.

How much is your plus or minus and why are you trying to lose weight?  Or are you just trying to maintain?

As for foods
These are suggestions if you don't mind beans and rice
Frozen veggies - corn, brocoli, stif fry, spinach if you like it
BEANS - dry if you don't mind but can is cool.  Find out what you like or go with Kidney, Black, and Chick
Kidney beans are excellent for soups and chili
Black beans are great for soups, fajitas, and yes chili
Chick Peas = HUMMUS and all other things mediterrean
Combine the three for a salad
LENTILS - the King of Beans IMHO.  I run away from most soy products.  The list of ingredients is frightening.
Potatoes - 5 lb bags.  Alwasy versatile and always good
Bell Peppers - great to add into any mean and the green ones are cheap
Onions - again 5 lb bags are fne.  Add to soups and anything else really

If you eat meat then frozen Chicken is fine.  Both are raised inhumanely so you are not really picking a better lifestyle for the dead animal.  I eat frozen chicken when I revert back to meat.  Make sure it is on sale otherwise get normal chicken breast if it is cheaper by the pound.  You might have to do math to figure this out...

My favorite = Frozen strawberries, blueberries, peaches, and a banana then add in a blender.   Add water and you ahve yourself a smoothie.  There is no need for anything else.  The fruit acts as the ice and you don't have to worry about corn syrup.

And of course my other college staple RICE and Rice Noodles.  I ate a ton of rice.

So for a veggie stir fry w/ protein add equal lentils to rice (both cook in about the same amount of time but cook seperately).  Its that simple and very nutritious. Add whatever seasoning you like or sauce.

Go to this soup section and buy a crock pot.  You won't regret it.  You can make a weeks worth of lunch or dinner for about 5 dollars.

And in the end you have a TON of TIME in college and you can spend an hour or two in the gym 4-5 days a week.  If you just do that then you won't have to worry about your diet.  Well you will if you drink a 12 pack a night.

Weight Loss Gym..burning calories..eating..workout..question?? Oct 07 2007

I am always amazed when women say "what kinds of things can i do to burn alotta calories...and lose inches..not gain a bunch of muscle right away..??"

The latter half of your question is so off base it is kind of scary.  You are on a 1200 calorie diet.  If you worked out hard your body would have to cannabalize healthy tissue in order to repair the damage done to your fatigued muscles.  The cannabalized tissue is not fat it is your other muscles since your body will need the protein to repair itself.  Your body has no chance whatsoever of developing any muscle on that calorie count.  You are more likely to pass out or do damage to your body then build any muscle strength.

You can work out on those 445-500 calories if they were all packed full of nutritional goodness.  I am 6'4" 235 and I often work out in the mid afternoon after eating roughly 750 calories.  Sometimes I'll snack on a piece of bread before I leave but I rarely have issues.  Those ~750 calories are an all fruit smoothie, 3 servings of different fruit, homemade natural oatmeal, and plenty of water.  I run 9 min or faster miles on the elliptical and have not yet falter.  I also take multiviatmin and a few other supplements.

If you were actually looking to gain muslce mass you would have too eat a lot more protien then you are capable of getting in 1200 calories.  My whey protein shake is about 240 calories and has 48g protein.  I think.  Maybe its 80.  I forget but in order for me to put on muscle I have to consume 150 or more grams of protein a day.  That comes to a lot of calories.  You have no need to ever worry about muscle growth.  Instead you have to worry about muscle deterioation and very poor recovery times.

And finally, if you do work out and eat 1200 calories then your body will go into starvation mode.  Even a light work out will put you under 1,000 calories net and that my friend is starvation.  I think I eat 1,000 calories in my lunch (veggie chili) and breakfast (homemade sometimes organic oatmeal).  Sometimes I switch it up with a yogurt parfait but that is about the same calorie count.  Beint my height and build has its benefits and that includes what food I can eat.

The best advice I can tell you is that you should see a nutrionist if you plan on working out hard and eating only 1200 calories.  Blue Cross and Blue Shield is starting to offer plans that pay for a nutrional visit 6x a year. If I was insured I'd go that route but I am one of the lucky w/o any insurance.

Please don't take this harshly.  I've had this converation with every girl I know and it is just amazing how they think that they can build large muscles.

Are you going to be a freshmen and relying on campus food?  Thats some pretty important information to know.

Also a budget is needed.  My college friends varied from the one who could only afford 20-30 a week on food to a friend who had an unlimted budget.  Neither was very healthy.

You'll also need to figure out what kind of food you like. If you are a veggie eater then I'd go with frozen vegetables as much as possible and find recipes that you like.  I am partial to stir fry so that is why I went that route.

I'd also invest in a blender.  No not for mixed drinks.  I would buy frozen fruit and make smoothies.  At least I started this my junior year.  It was my weekend breakfast/hangover helper and afternoon snack during the week.

A food processor will come in handy too.  I am a huge fan of hummus and its very easy to make.  There are a few recipes on here for it already but I prefer to have the old fashion hummus ie the real thing.  Tahini, Olive Oil, Chick Peas, Garlic, Lemon, and season as you like.

Breakfast was always difficult but it was typically a bagel from campus.  In retrospect I would go with instant oatmeal or make my own breakfast.  I found this this oatmeal recipe that looked very good or just make eggs and potatoes.  Eggs and potatoes were typically on the weekends.

My girlfriend was spoiled when she slept over.  Wake up to a smoothie and breakfast.  Lucky girl.

I never needed to buy or deal w/ low calorie diets really.  I'm a 6'4" male so my daily calories are high.  The foodnetwork offers a lot of college advice.

Focus on frozen veggies (cheap), bean dips, simple homemade soups, rice or pasta, and remember that this site has a shit load of cheap recipes.

Do you have an espresso machine or are you trying to make iced coffee?  I make cappacuinos with my espresso machine but the technique is similar.  Well the only real difference between a cafe latte and a cappacuino is how the steamed milk is poured into the drink.

I use equal parts milk to espresso but i think the official way it to use 1 espresso shot and 1/2 cup milk for what I think would be a tall at starbucks.

I personally use 2 shots of espresso and a half cup of milk.  If I wanted to make a latte I would use a spoon to hold back the foam while I poured the steam milk into the cup.

My near daily drink is 113 calories give or take a couple.  I think an espresso shot has 9 cals.  I use 3 tsp of unrefiend sugar cane and 1/2 of 1% milk.  I prefer 2% but they sell 1% organic milk in bulk.

Like C said you need to relax a bit but you feel like you ballooned b/c you are eating differently and it seems like you are eating food that you are not used to eating.  If you are really annoyed with how you feel go for a long walk or run.  It'll help clear your head and release some good endorphins.

Also that dinner you ate was all carbs so that doesn't help you feel any slimmer.  Are you a vegetarian?

if you work out 4 times a week then you are doing light activity.  Esp if you are doing some cardio during those four work outs.

IMHO, sedentary people are those people who do not do anything other than work, home, bed.  Light activty would be work, gym, home, bed or someone who has an active hobby like hiking or the like.

I could really use a foodscale while making somethings but I've never gotten around to buying one.  I hate when a recipe calls for ounces or grams of some grain.  I just skip ahead when that happens.

I can blame injuries, beer, and pot for my weight gain in college.  Nothing like a couple car accidents and a heart problem to put your work outs on hold for a few years.  I used to be terrified when I worked out.  I had a seizure after running the 800 while I was a senior in high school.  Turned out it was due to a heart problem that really wasn't that big of a problem if i would have just eaten right!  I learned that lesson when I was a senior in college thats after going from 185 (4-7% body fat) w/ a sub 5 min mile to 260ish (30+% body fat) with a 15 min mile.

One thing I never realized til I started to look at calories was how much weight gain could have come from just eating 2 PBnJ sandwiches with something on the side.

Chunky, 4-5% body fat is nearly impossible to maintain if you are eating a healthy diet.  Body Builders and athletes that must cut weight are the only people I knew that have taken their body fats to that level.  You are either eating a ridiculously low calorie diet or working out like a maniac.  The light work out just does not make any sense unless you are getting a very low daily calorie intake.  Or you are just herion sheik i.e. emo skinny.  No strength at all.  I am not saying this to be offensive.  I just knew a couple body builders in college and one of my roommates was a collegiate wrestler.

On the soy note, since you are a guy I would recommend that you do not eat any soy or VERY LITTLE soy in your diet.  Once digested soy will mimic estrogen in your system.  Like most miriacle foods it is over hyped.  If you want to find info on soy and estrogen just google the info.  You'll find plenty of resources.

I had gone two years with out meat but I eat a serving a day now.  I'm looking to go vegetarian again but I want to avoid soy.  Well I do love Silk Soy Mocha Latte.  Great stuff.

If you are looking for other sources of protein learn to love black beans, pinto beans, kidney beans, and my favorite chick peas.  I like to make refried beans to put on veggie or chicken fajitas/burritos.  Chick Peas are awesome for HUMMUS :-) and falafel.  You can turn chick peas into a meal, dip, or side dish.  I prefer this to soy.  Kidney beans are kind of the spinach of beans.  I do not like either but they are excellent sources for every plant based vitamin and mineral.  Of course the best source for all your needs is illegal.  Its too bad because I hear that cannabis seeds are tasty.

I can go on and all about why a complete vegetarian diet is the best diet for someone who wants to lose weight.  You forgot to add the benefits of eating a lot more servings of fruit and vegetables.  When I go vegetarian I typically eat 7-8 servings of fruit, 4-5 servings of veggies, and a lot of legums over grains.  I still eat eggs and dairy.

In the end, the key is cardio.  You can never escape the need to actually BURN the calories away.

I'm glad I don't really deal with any cravings but I do like PB.  Sometimes on celery and sometimes on a sandwich but I ALWAYS have a TBSP to measure out the PB.  I do the same thing for when I buy Nutella.  Measuring cups and spoons are great.  But I am now fully aware that most people can not be anal like me.  I basically use measuring cups and spoons with every meal I prepare.

The only time I ever had cravings was when I was a pot head.  Shopping while high was a terrible idea but it was always a good time.  But I never bought PB instead I'd buy ice creams w/ PB...

Tender, that 6,000 calorie is very attainable.  I used to eat that while I was a runner in high school.  Its just too bad that I got hurt my senior year but didn't adjust my eating habits until I gained A LOT of weight.  College parties didn't help either.

I've never had problems with eating around 2,000 a day but I'm sure I've also eaten close to 2,500 anyway.  I guess it really depends on when I eat meat.  I'll have to keep another log sometime this week to see.  I've been inactive this week but I'm heading back to they gym tonight so hopefully I haven't gained anything while I was away.

HK, I'm gonna take your approach and see what it says.

Thanks for the responses.  I've been wondering about this for awhile.

Also, my waist is 24". Which doesn't speak of a high body fat.

Umm, this isnt meant to come off the wrong way but if you have a large chest then that can account for alot of your body fat.  My ex had a classic build 34-24-34 but one of those 34 was a D-DD so her body fat was also 27%.  She went ape sh*t until I pointed out that she had boobs where as I was just fat.
