You are completely moronic if you think that changing phrases, like ?mum? to ?mom,? is dumbing down literature for Americans. Both ?mum? and ?mom? are slang for ?mother.? Slang varies between cultures, and sometimes can be misconstrued because of these cultural differences. It is not as if the word ?loquacious? was changed to read ?chatty;? that would be dumbing down. What we are discussing here is a matter of changing phrases and slang to suit various cultures. I?m neither endorsing these small alterations, nor saying that they are wrong, but it is certainly not dumbing down.

It's not a matter of dumbing down; it's a matter of culture. In America, spelling color with a "u" is grammatically incorrect. If children see it spelled incorrectly, they will write it incorrect. And while they may travel to England and be praised, back in the states they'll get marked wrong on their English papers. And so what if they changed the comparisons, the context is still the same.

Weight Loss Scale, How do we know it's not cheating us? Jul 03 2007

I can't believe your "friend" said that. I would never say such a thing to my friends.

Here's some advice: Get those M&Ms out for your house. Dont buy junk. Dont buy it for you and dont buy if for your daughter. You're spending money on things that are harmful to you, and having it around will make you want to eat it, or binge on it. Also, feeding it to your daughter may make her fall into the same eating cycles as you, causing her to possible have weight problems when she gets older.

Wow, I'm surprised most of you don't drink. I?m going to be a sophomore and I went out a lot freshman year. My first semester I went out about 5 times a week, but that began to take a toll on my mind; I was always tired and would sleep the days away. During Christmas break I wasn?t getting as much exercise as I did in college (it?s an urban campus so I probably walk 3 miles a day plus go to the gym), but I was eating the same. So I gained weight. Then my second semester I started getting very stressed. I had a 3.9 my first semester and felt so much pressure to maintain it (which I did, thank goodness). Anyway, I was stressed and turned to all the snacks laying around my sorority house (I?m required to be on the Greek meal plan). This coming semester I'm going to turn to fitness instead of food when I'm feeling stressed. Overeating only makes stress worse because you feel so guilty! Also in terms of going out, I think the trick is just don't eat a whole lot that day, then before you go out eat a full, healthy meal so you don't get sick later. Then in the morning hit the gym and sweat all of the toxins out of you.

Tully, let me define what an average is. An average is a typical amount, rate, or norm. Being normal is by definition ?conforming to the standard or the common type.? What is normal in our country is to be overweight. The American Obesity Association claims that currently 64.5 percent of us are overweight. Our country is interesting in that aspect. We have an obsession with emaciated celebrities and yet, as Americans, the majority of us are overweight, and above that, we have accepted it as normal. I never said that to be considered thin, or healthy for that matter, bones should be showing. I am saying that just because a size 14 is the American average, and because by Americans standards it's normal, does not mean it?s healthy. I?m 5?8? and wear a size 8.  I joined this site because I have excess fat. Now if I went up 3 sizes I would have more fat. Is having excess fat normal? Yes. Is it healthy? No. That is my point.

The average woman in America is a size 14

That doesn't mean a size 14 is heathy. It is a well know fact that Americans are overweight; so the average woman's weight in American is nothing to aspire to.
