Fitness Rest between cardio sessions? Jun 11 2008

you dont need to do any more cardio after a spin class, from reading another post of yours the spin class is 75 min you say, just do that, its a major calorie burner, if you can only do 45 min like your other post says, give those 45 min your all and call it a day, OR reduce the level of your effort just enough so you can finish the full 75 min

the only thing i can say is quit again, what kept me from ever ( so far almost 3 yrs) picking up a cigarette again was having to go thru the first hour, day, week, again was so hellish i couldnt imagine trying to quit again and go thru it , it was and is easier to stay quit and i was a 3 pack a day smoker who went cold turkey

if i did it, anybody can do it

dont let those little white sticks have any control of you and your mind, in the long run, they made you more stressed out so they didnt actually get you thru your stressful time

good luck and just start over again and dont ever have an emergency pack lying around, that was the downfall
Weight Loss Vent: weight loss advice from my DOCTOR!!! Jan 30 2008

how funny, i could of written this post, tho i do have an underactive thyroid that is now controlled by medication ( it still doesnt help in terms of weight loss)

in my 2 yr cleanish eating 5 day a week exercise i have lost a grand total of 4 pounds ( i am at a minimum of 50lbs overweight)

i've had my primary doctor say  wow you must have a really slow metabolism and didnt even care about my bmi of 34

my gyn said  have you tried the hot dog diet? ( yes it exists)

and another doctor i went to for sleep issues because i was up all night with an aching back, feet , knees because of exercising like a fiend with no weight loss, said i should get 5 hrs sleep a night and eat 1000 calories and you'll lose weight

this is all advice from health care professionals

when i hear or read people say their doctor helped them with weight loss, i think to myself what kind of doctor is this, why cant i get any doctor to even remotely care about my weight loss efforts

click on activity log, then on the left hand side of the screen is activity browser, find the activity you did , then another screen comes up, with more listings inside, like bicylcing light effort, or hard effort  etc, click on the one that fits what you did, then put in the amount of minutes , since i use a heart rate monitor with a calorie counter on it i adjust the minutes to have my heart rate monitor and calorie count log equal the same number of calories
Weight Loss Quitting Smoking Dec 05 2007

i'm going to have to agree with the dr , dont worry about any weight gain, the benefits of quitting smoking are far greater

having been quit now for 2 1/2 yrs , i gained weight and have not been able to lose it at all in spite of exercising like a madwoman which by the way exercising is now wayyyyyyy easier as a non-smoker

i can now run ( despite the weight )  i have not been sick since i quit smoking, i smell wonderful now, a lot of food i thought tasted good as a smoker tastes terrible as a non smoker

just take it one day at a time, if you can make it thru the first few weeks, thats the hardest part ( note i said hardest, its still hard after that)

after a month or two , tell yourself i dont ever want to go thru that early quitting stuff again, so you make it another week, next thing you know its 6 months , then a year, then 1000 days

good luck and dont worry about any weight gain when you quit, just keep exercising and eating right

Foods Diet coke? Dec 04 2007
21:07 (UTC)
diet soda is not high in sodium , about 30-35 mg of sodium per 8 oz

cheerios on the other hand per serving about 200 mg

and a cup of whole milk about 120 mg

as someone who swore of regular soda and fruit juices because of the high calorie count for not much benefit i got so incredibly bored with water and black coffee after a year i decided to try my hand at diet soda ( never touched the stuff before, well i did and it tasted horrible to me) but now i can drink it, like any drink or any food , moderation, and i'm so happy i can now have some flavor back in my life , a few sips of diet coke or diet dr pepper after dinner is all i need , and it has to be icy cold , and most of all , its guilt free

Health & Support Calling Frequent Headache Sufferers. Oct 25 2007

i had daily headaches for about 8 months a few years back

horrible day long ones, i was taking like 10 advil a day

my dentist diagnosed it as MFPS (myofascial pain syndrome)

which is like TMJ but doesnt affect the joint, just the muscles around the jaw and the subsequent muscles that run up your skull to your temples, down your shoulders into your neck and back

clench your teeth, notice you can feel it up and down your head into your shoulders,

i was clenching and grinding my teeth as i sleep all night long, no wonder i woke up with headaches

i got fitted for a mouthguard and within a few days, my headaches were gone, its 10 yrs later and i still wear it to bed everynight and have not woken up with one of those headaches since ( tho sometimes i didnt wake up with one, it appeared soon after)

get checked for teeth grinding/clenching

good luck

Fitness Stationary bikes and watts? Oct 17 2007
17:59 (UTC)
watts represents energy expended there is stuff on line that explains it all

under activities is conditioning with bicyling listed in watts there i would use that ( or get a heart rate monitor)

having done most of my exercise on a stationary road bike with my heart rate monitor on, vigorous effort , about 18 to 20 mph for a full hour would burn about 450-550 calories, but according to this site it comes in at a much higher calorie burn like 1000 calories

and i used the bicyling activities not the conditioning since i dont know my wattage, but since its a real road bike with gears and stuff i count it as a real bike not drafting

i hope this helps
Foods Homemade Yoghurt? Oct 12 2007

plain yogurt has no added sugar, if you see sugar in the nutritional info its milk sugars, not added cane sugars

even skim milk ( if i recall) has those milk sugars since that is what nonfat plain yogurt in the store is made with

i found my f4 polar hr monitor booklet and it actually gives the "life" of the wrist unit ( watch) and the transmitter( chest strap)

the watch battery life is 2 yrs, exercising one hour a day 7 days a week

my husband just replaced his battery in his hr monitor ( older polar model) its just like replacing a watch battery no biggie 4 screws i think it was

the transmitter is a built in lithium cell

average 2500 hours of use ( so i'm assuming thats actual transmitting time) so if you used it about an hour a day for 5 days a week the chest strap battery will last about 10 yrs (give or take)

as to wearing it while lifting weights , i've used it and only once or twice did it get in the way, bent my wrist too far back once and it hit one of the buttons, otherwise just move it a tiny bit further up your arm so its not on your bendy part of the wrist
Foods Fage 0% Yogurt Oct 02 2007

trader joes brand is just as good as fage

you need to add sweetner to it, like honey

heres how i use it, put some in a bowl, about 3/4cup or so of the yogurt( a third of the trader joes container)

spread it out, drizzle about a tablespoon of honey all over it, more if you can deal with the calories

then add on top your berry of choice, i like strawberries or thawed frozen cherries

if the berries are really sour, like in the case of blackberries, i might add a little more honey

if you dont add sweetner of any type  , yes it will be just like sour cream, which i hate

but doing the greek yogurt in this   way i have eaten it every day since feb for lunch, and i still wont touch sour cream
Fitness Does working out on the elliptical affect your joints?? Sep 20 2007
01:02 (UTC)
3
no your current speed is about 5mph if you do a mile in 12 minutes

you should drop down to half that to start, thats why your joints hurt

go wayyyy wayyyy slow, about 2.5 mph or do a mile in about 24 minutes

you can probably go a little faster if you want, but to reduce stress on  your aching joints go slow, then gradually go a little faster each week, that will be easiest on your joints

Fitness Does working out on the elliptical affect your joints?? Sep 19 2007

go slower, if you want  to run/jog, start out really really slow to where it doesnt hurt, that might be like 2.5 mph or a 24 minute mile, its slow , really slow, in fact you can walk faster than that comfortably and really easy, work up to faster speeds by upping the mph by a one tenth every few weeks, also, dont try to do it every day either

running is really hard on the joints unless you are super skinny

where you dont have all that excess weight working against you on your joints

i think 12mph is entirely too fast and you must of mistyped

thats like expert marathoners speed

when i first started jogging on the treadmill ( and i'm way fatter than you) it was slow , like 2.5 mph for just a few minutes at a time, after a year i can finally run on the treadmill at 5.0 mph but for only 15 minutes

i think if you are pear shaped its really hard to run comfortably

Fitness Choosing the proper footwear Sep 19 2007
04:10 (UTC)

i too have totally fallen arches, so bad that i'd get black and blue if i walked too much

i have suffered thru years of exercising in workout footwear i thought was good for my feet, like real walking shoes, arch supports( hurt 10 times worse than no arch supports in my shoes), i used to sell shoes for many years so i thought i knew what i was doing

finally i started doing some running and my feet were just throbbing daily, all day, all night

so i went to a runners shoe store, and they could immediatly see i had no arches and i overpronated(inward roll of the foot)

and the first shoe i tried was the one i walked away with and i have had almost no issues since then( i walk and run in these shoes)

look them up online  saucony grid stabil mc 5, i also found out why they work so well for an overpronator something called arch lock

i read some review that says saucony must have a soft spot for overpronators

on a side note, i decided to take up tennis recently using my saucony i was fine cept for a little knee issues, so i got real tennis shoes thinking that would help with the knee stuff

after one use of the new tennis shoes my feet were killing me

they did not ( nor did any tennis shoes i looked at) have that stability in the arch( outside of the shoe that is) which i feel made all the difference, kinda like a girdle for the foot

good luck and this time of year you might get markdowns, i got mine last october for 40 dollars less than the boxed price since it was old stock

milk has always bothered me, so i was thrilled when lactaid milk came out

the first few times you have it, it may taste a wee sweeter than regular milk, but that will dissipate , not as sweet as soy milk tho

but its so nice to have cereal without ramifications again

btw, i just found lactaid chocolate milk, , boy was that nice to have a glass of chocolate milk

i second the its not a magic bullet for weight loss

i so wanted it to be , or even help somewhat, which it has not

if you have weight to lose, be prepared for the long haul and it being a struggle ( i lose about 1/2 lb a month for the last two years of actively trying very very hard to lose weight)

at this rate i'll be my ideal weight in 10 yrs of very hard work : (
