Do you happen to know anyone who lives in York or McMurray?  You can buy it in store in both those cities.

You could also buy the 12pack for $36.  It saves a little money, makes it $6 per bag.

If you're not used to taking narcotics, take the smallest dose possible.  It will still work at taking away the pain and shouldn't make you as sick.

I have actually cut the pills in half and it's usually enough to take the edge off any pain I have.  If it's not enough you can still take the other half, but start with the lowest dose and work your way up to what you can tolerate.

I love this stuff.  I have about 10 bags of it in by cupboards right now.  It's delicious!  If I had to describe it I would say that even though it's dry pasta, it tastes a lot like fresh pasta after cooking.  At least the texture is a lot like that of fresh pasta.

Taste-wise you honestly can't tell the difference.  It's goooooood!

The easiest way to up calories is to stop eating low calorie versions of real foods.  In the morning eat whole eggs instead of egg beaters.  Eat real bacon instead of turkey bacon. (there's bound to be some people who freak out about that but there's really not that much wrong with a slice or two if you're healthy).  Eat a full serving of cheese instead of half a serving.  Eat real salad dressing instead of local dressing.  Add avocado to your salad or to your eggs, or as a snack.  Add more nuts or peanut butter.  Cook your chicken in olive or canola oil.  Add a red meat to your diet.  Add some fruit, you don't seem to have any fruit in your diet besides bananas.

There are lots of choices for you if you try and break the "diet" mentality and try to start looking at your food choices from a lifestyle point of view.  And enjoy!  You get to eat all this lovely food!

Did this exhaustion begin only after you began your training/dieting schedule or did it start before that?

I noticed in your profile that you seem to be in a constant state of training for one marathon or another, and you are also running a deficit while training for a marathon which is generally pretty tough.

If it corresponds to your state of exhaustion then i'd say you might want to start by looking at your exercise and eating habits first.  You haven't posted your stats or how many calories you eat, or what you eat, so just knowing what your deficits are really isn't much help determining whether or not you're eating enough.

If it started before you began all this, then you definitely need a second opinion from a doctor.

This is slightly different, but may help.

I have a medical reimbursement plan that my employer pays for.  In order to use that to cover my Psychiatrist and my "Nutritional Therapy" sessions I had to get a note from my General Practitioner at my HMO that said this therapy was "medically necessary".  They considered the therapy sessions optional unless deemed "medically necessary" by my doctor.

Fitness Oh No! Another Ab Question. Dec 09 2008

Original Post by shandykat:

Anyway, to answer your ab question, you can do the same crunch exercise while sitting.  You just basically tighten and release your ab muscles while bending foward just a little bit, not a lot, just like the crunch motion. Um, I disagree that training your muscles to pull you into a position of poor posture will do anything to releave back pain.  A lot of back pain is caused by poor posture and training your muscles to get into that sort of position isn't going to help any.  Squeezing the muscles is a great idea, just do it while your sitting up strait (the muscles around your mid-section are designed to hold your lower back in place, not move it around)

The most important things for beginners to learn is how to isolate your muscles, that is, learning how to work your abs without engaging your back, neck, and butt and hips. :)  Why would anyone (especially a beginner) want to learn to isolate a particular muscle? Your muscles are supposed to work together, that's how they were designed, when they don't work together properly injuries happen.

I think being concious of your posture throughout the day (both sitting and standing) is a great place to start (it'll stregthen all your core muscles and likely help with the back pain).  Walking (while standing up strait) and some of the other exercises Spirochete suggested would be a great place to start.

And of course, improving your diet is what's going to drive the majority of your results, so really concentrate on that.

You asked why a person would want to learn to isolate a muscle?  So they can know they're working the correct muscles for one, and they can do the exercises correctly, and they can get the most out of the exercise they're doing.

I did crunches for years and for years they made my back ache, and they never seemed to do much for me.  I never "got" it, never got what they meant when they said to work the upper, lower, obliques, etc.  It wasn't until I actually learned to feel these muscles and learned to isolate them during the exercise that I learned how to get the most out of the workout.  Now I can do amazing core workouts and can run circles (figuratively) around people who are in twice the shape I am and they just look on amazed.  Learning to isolate muscles is just as important as working them together.

Don't get me wrong, I agree working muscles in combination is of utmost importance and I prescribe to the CrossFit style workouts myself, but there is a place for isolation as well.

As to your other statement, you might have a point about the poor posture position and the person who followed with the better position for the exercise with the beginning posture of leaning back would probably be a bit better.

Right on, Spiro.  I was reading and thinking the exact same thing, "did this person even READ the OP's post?"  She can't even lie on her back, and has back pain, and they're telling her to lie on her back for leg lifts?  And planks?!  Oh man...

Anyway, to answer your ab question, you can do the same crunch exercise while sitting.  You just basically tighten and release your ab muscles while bending foward just a little bit, not a lot, just like the crunch motion.  And you do NOT engage your back, you engage your ab muscle so that's the muscle that pulls you down and forward.  If you find this uncomfortable on your back, just the tightening and releasing of your abs will be enough.

The hard part for a beginner is twofold: 1. your ab muscles are so weak your back muscles usually get involved to "assist" with the exercise, and 2. you don't quite know how to isolate your ab muscles just yet so you tend to let all your core muscles do the work, which is why your back sometimes feels so achy and tired after ab exercises.

The most important things for beginners to learn is how to isolate your muscles, that is, learning how to work your abs without engaging your back, neck, and butt and hips. :)  In your case, how to do this without your back involved I believe means learning how to isolate your ab muscles so you can do ab exercises from all sorts of different positions that won't cause strain on your back.

And yes, do go see your doctor before entering into any exercise program, and before following any advice you get here!

If you've only gone out with him for a week and a half you don't owe him a "break-up letter", just tell him it's not working out and you don't want to see him anymore.

Like mrsdustbag said, this letter won't fix him, and from the way you describe him it sounds like there's not much that will.  Just walk away, don't waste any more angst or frustration on him.  He's not likely to read this and suddenly be introspective and enlightened, but he might get angry, and he doesn't sound like someone you'd want to have angry at you.

Just walk away.  Quietly.

Health & Support Topamax? Wellbutrin? Dec 07 2008

Original Post by berriesandyogurt:

I was wondering about the side affects of these drugs. I know that they are both known to decrease appetite and promote weight loss, and that Topamax can cause short term memory loss and fatigue.
I am not too concerned with the side effects of the drugs, more about what will happen if I should decide to discontinue them. I have been diagnosed with binge eating disorder, and I am scared that my habits will return upon going off the medication. I also have mild depression: that's what the Wellbutrin is for. It's also supposed to help me focus, counteracting the "blurry thoughts" that are expected from Topamax. If anyone has taken these drugs before, please give me your input! I don't want to regain any weight I lose, or my old eating habits!

edit: I am in therapy for my binge eating and depression.

I take both of these, and while I can speak to the side effects while taking them, I can't tell you what will happen once you go off them because i'm still on them.  They do say that the effects of Topamax only last for the time you're taking the drug, which is a big reason I decided to take it myself.  The side effects are pretty hairy and there was no way I was going to take it if they were going to affect me permanently.

You can expect to have a tremendous loss of appetite while on both.  You will most likely also experience drowsiness, and a tingling in your extremities at times.  I felt it in my fingers and lips mostly.

I suffered from headaches before taking Topamax and found that they've gone away completely (except for my monthy PMS headache).  This is a known positive side effect and it's curious to me that someone actually got headaches from this.

Yes, my short-term memory is terrible now, but the worst part of this is I feel sort of sketchy now.  I'm not as "clear-minded" as I used to be.  Known side effect and one that should go away once i'm off the med.  The sketchyness could be a combo of the Wellbutrin and the Topamax.  And it's hard to concentrate and focus on tasks now, it feels like what I think ADD might feel like.

That being said, I went from a size 18 to a size 8 over the course of a year.  But i'm starting to gain again so i'm glad to see you need to deal with your overeating issues because the meds are a temporary fix.  They're only meant as a way to get yourself back to a place of control in order to be able to work on your issues.  I'm glad to see you recognize that.

I'm so sorry, I know how hard this is for you.

How about taking some walks?  That would get you outside and at least keep you in the mindset of being active, but not forcing yourself to do something you don't feel like doing right now.  And walking is a great way to be alone and think things through, figure out where you want to go from here.

I know it's probably cold where you are, but bundle up and go.  Sometimes cold weather walks are really good for clearing your head.

Foods cutting-out artificial sweeteners, who's with me? Aug 30 2008

I cut out artificial sweeteners months and months ago and i'm so happy I did.  I can actually taste sugar again!  When I was eating and drinking artificial sweeteners I was so used to that super sweetness that real sugar was not sweet enough for me anymore.  I had to pile on spoonful after spoonful just to get the sweetness to match the level of sweetness found in my artificial sweeteners. But it only took about 2 weeks before my taste readjusted itself.  Now just a little sugar is all I need to make something sweet.  And sometimes I don't need any at all. :)

I had an interesting experience the other morning.  I was making my usual fruit smoothie.  I normally make them with a fruit nectar, yogurt, and frozen fruit.  I grabbed what I thought was just peach nectar from my fridge but when I had a sip of the smoothie I almost gagged from the sweetness.  It tasted like i'd dumped a cup of sugar in it!  I looked at the nectar and it was LO-CARB nectar, which of course means artificial sweeteners!  It was shocking how much difference it made.  I only used about 3/4 of a cup in a 2 cup smoothie but it was so sweet I couldn't even drink it.  I ended up throwing the whole thing away.

Your tastes WILL change.  You won't need the sugar you once did.  Don't worry about the calories, you won't be eating that much extra because you won't need that much sugar anymore.  The natural sweetness of foods will be enough.  And regular, full sugar drinks will be so satisfying you won't need to drink much of them.

In US fluid ounces it converts to 3.1 liters.

in any case, the daily fluid replacement needs for an average adult is 2 liters.  This includes fluids you drink as well as fluids that come from your foods.  ALL food has water, even the driest of foods.

If you exercise heavily, live in a dry climate, or otherwise perspire profusely then you will need to replace more fluid than the average person will.

"In other words, I'm hoping to get to the appropriate BF composition before I get to an appropriate weight, per BMI."

I don't really follow this.  If you have an acceptable BF percentage, then BMI is unnecessary.  It's not unhealthy for your weight to be higher than your suggested BMI if it's muscle that's putting you there.  I'm confused.?  Why would you want to take off muscle just to reach a certain weight?

You don't have to be pretty

You Don’t Have to Be Pretty. You don’t owe prettiness to anyone. Not to your boyfriend/spouse/partner, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street. You don’t owe it to your mother, you don’t owe it to your children, you don’t owe it to civilization in general. Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked “female”.

Amazing how we live in a pretty culture. I was looking at some recent pictures, and I shuddered as I came across one where I looked unattractive, thinking “how embarrassing.” Yet why should I be embarrassed of a bad picture? Who do I owe pretty to? Why is being pretty so damn important to me?

Pretty won’t get me a job. Leave me fulfilled when I go to sleep at night. It won’t serve the world. It won’t nourish friendships. Won’t maintain a relationship. It won’t raise children. Pretty won’t make people laugh. It won’t acknowledge your parents. It won’t bring in money (except in rare occasions). Pretty is an adjective.

You don't have to apologize for wearing things that are held to be "unflattering" or "unfashionable" -- especially if, in fact, they make you happy on some level deeper than just being pretty does. So what if your favorite color isn't a "good" color on you? So what if you are "too fat" (by some arbitrary measure) for a sleeveless top? If you are clean, are covered enough to avoid a citation for public indecency, and have bandaged any open wounds, you can wear any color or style you please, if it makes you happy.

When I could choose descriptive words to describe me, such as hilarious, quirky, striking, generous, compassionate, radiant, thoughtful, stunning, lovely, warm, charming, delightful, sexy, bright, intelligent, witty, and adventurous: Why the hell would I choose pretty as the ultimate compliment?

I’m not saying that being pretty is negative or something to avoid. I love to walk out into the day and to feel pretty. To feel comfortable in my own skin and like I look good to the world. I smile more, send out positive vibes, and receive them back. But it’s more of a feeling than an actual thing. Nobody gives me pretty and nobody can take it away. It comes from inside. But you won't get there if you think you have to follow all the signs that say "this way to Pretty." You get there by traveling the route you find most interesting.

Ani Difranco sums it up brilliantly: I am not a pretty girl. I don’t want to be a pretty girl. No I want to be more than a pretty girl.

Hi.  I'm so sorry you're feeling these things.  I know what you're going through, I could have written this exact thing 20 years ago.  Boy, fathers have no idea what they do to us when they tease us like that, do they?  And being picked last for teams, ugh.  That's the worst.  Why do coaches still put kids through this humiliating rite of passage?

You're not alone, and it's not weird or unusual to feel these things.  But you know what?  You are more than just a number on a scale.  God made you unique, there is no one else in the entire world like you, and that's pretty cool :)  You have talents and abilities beyond what you look like.  You are more than just the 6 square inches between your chest and your hips, that 6 square inches does not define you.

If you want to IM, feel free.  You're smart, I can tell.  :)

It may sound like a dream come true, but if you really thought about it, it would be a nightmare to have to eat that much food every single day, just to maintain your weight.

Think about it.  Look at his menu.  This is every meal, every day.  Think of how sick you would feel if you at a pound of pasta at lunch and at dinner, not to mention all that other food.

Now I know it would be different if your body was burning through it, but still, the burden of needing that much food is not a fun burden to have.  Ask anyone who needs to eat that much, they'll tell you.
