| Fitness | Chest exercises & best way to lose my fatty muffin top. | Sep 05 2008 00:25 (UTC) |

I'm not one to talk right now, but i lost a ton of fat pretty quickly (in about 3 months) by lifting weights when i was in my routine -- it took away fat I thought was a permanent part of me, like the muffin top. If you have dumbbells that are a heavy weight but light enough to keep good form, pretty much any standing exercise you do will strengthen your core and help your stomach and sides look tighter. The diet will shed the pounds, but the lifting makes you look like a rock star. My favorites are lunges, squats, rows (of all kinds), umm.. i don't know the name but i stand straight and pull the weights from my navel to my collar bone... love that one... and shoulder presses. You have to hold your tummy in and all that weight you're lifting sculpts it like crazy. Just find a full body routine you love and the magic will happen. PS: It's so funny when people yell at Spiro, because she's always right and for some reason that makes people sooo angry. I took her advice ONE TIME and it changed my whole body for the better. Not to give you all the credit, Spiro -- I was the one doing the deadlifts, after all.

| Fitness | How long until I see good results? | May 06 2008 18:41 (UTC) |

You're doing great -- 2 weeks and already noticing a difference! Just continue to up your weights with each workout if you can, and keep your calories down. It took me a solid 2 months to REALLY get noticed with the results, but i noticed the muscle building and strength improving within 3 weeks. Now, i love my results and i can lift four times what i could (on some exercises) when i entered the gym three months ago. Keep it up! 6 weeks will have your body looking better, but don't give up after that. |

Oh yeah, i get that -- that's why it doesn't bother me -- the inches lost are very satisfying. But i was curious if i should start making a "rest period" of about a week part of my routine to help the scale? Is there a scientific basis for why the pounds came off, or is it just coincidence? |

| Fitness | Muffin Top.. Ick :P | Apr 30 2008 00:35 (UTC) |

That's based on your BMR -- use the tools on this site to figure out how many calories you burn a day just by living, and then add your exercise. After that, eat about 500 calories LESS than what you burn. You'll lose a pound a week that way. You can also use the tool on this site to see how many calories you should eat a day to reach your goal weight by a goal date. Very helpful. I'm not the right person to answer the "what to eat" question," so I'll let the others help you out there. "Clean" is the key word. Go online and google "clean diet" for some ideas. Good luck! |

Lift weights with free weights. Arms, legs, pull ups, back, chest, all of it. They force you to hold your core in firmly, and your stomach will look great. Also, even though you say it's hard to choose what you eat, you have to. Losing weight is the ONLY way to get the muffin top to go away. Watch your calories, eat clean food (non-processed) and drink tons of water. You can potentially lose about 1-2 pounds a week -- that's 4-8 pounds in a month! And with strength training, it will make your stomach appear smaller because muscles are super sexy. Good luck! |

Since I've been lifting, I have only lost maybe 5 pounds in over 3 months. HOWEVER, i have never had more compliments on my body. Women, men, and especially my husband. Muscles DO make you look trimmer and built and healthy and athletic -- even when you're still struggling to lose the weight. It's awesome, and it's a great self-esteem booster. I love it! |

Weight lifting 4 times a week (usually M-T-T-S) Cardio on those days too, but only for warm up and cool down (about 15 min total) -- i hate cardio :p |

| Fitness | How do you feel the day after a hard workout? | Apr 16 2008 23:54 (UTC) |

I felt this way when i started working out -- it's a build up of lactic acid and not drinking enough water. Your body will start to feel better, but I had to work through it for the first two weeks -- you can see why people hate to work out when they first start! |

| Fitness | Weights are making my butt and legs bigger... help! | Apr 16 2008 16:57 (UTC) |

You need to watch your food intake -- weight loss is about eating less calories. If the muscle is building under that fat (and GOOD FOR YOU) it might make you look "bigger" in the beginning. Once the weight comes off, your body will be sexy and slim! It seems to take awhile, but that's because there are no quick fixes. Congratulate yourself on being healthy and good to your body, and try not to obsess over the details -- it's hard, but you'll see it pay off. Keep up the exercise and REALLY focus on a clean diet. |

I don't do any crunches -- just lift weights, keeping my core tight, and as much cardio as I can stand (i hate cardio, but you gotta do it to lose fat). Anyway, the core strength I've developed from lifting is sensational. Maybe try adding some free weights into your routine while standing.

I'm so excited. And jenningermany -- Wii is the best thing that ever happened to my marriage -- tell your husband that!!! We play/fight/spar all the time, and we really enjoy it. In fact, if we're getting on each other's nerves, we say, "Let's take this to the Wii!" and we box it out! It's the best. Totally worth the cost. |

| Fitness | Help! I'm running outta breath, but only sort of, and I'm confused. | Apr 14 2008 19:36 (UTC) |

I can't run for that reason, too. I can do the elliptical and even Spin class, all day long -- but no running. My allergist says I have "exercise induced" asthma... but how that can that be specific to ONLY running? I'm sure it has to do with the WAY i'm breathing. I was told by a runner to "build up to it" by jogging only at a pace where you can still hold a conversation without sounding winded. Practice breathing at that level until you get it right, then step up the speed/distance. I'm a wimp and haven't tried it yet, but it sounds like a good place to start. I would LOVE to be able to run outside for an hour instead of lugging my a$$ to the gym for my cardio. |

Ugh... I love them, too. However, aside from lowering your body fat to make the ones you might already have look more defined, there is no exercise that will create them. They are genetic, and darned cute. |

HA! I have another one. I wear suits and biz-casual clothes to work and change quickly at work before driving to the gym. The other day i had a super fancy event that i was dressed for and I went to the gym afterward. I put on my gym clothes, waltzed right in, got loooooaaaads of stares, and realized that i was still wearing my pearl set -- earrings, necklace, bracelet, the works. I looked like freakin Ivana Trump in sweat pants. |

Best advice for spin that I ever received was not to go less than three times a week -- if you do, it will be like you never got up on that bike the next time you hit it.
Good luck! |

I sit on an exercise ball! I got funny looks at first, but now all the girls ask to borrow it. It keeps your core tight and your posture tall. |

Haha. That's the best advice you'll ever get, Sublime. Lifting is the most efficient way to get the results you want. Get heavier weights, continue your cardio, follow a healthy diet plan. BAM, awesome body. |

| Fitness | Back surgery and working out | Mar 20 2008 15:56 (UTC) |

The stretches are important, and learning how to do them properly will help you for the rest of your life (back pain lingers...). When i was healing, walking was fine, but NO running (bouncing was bad). I didn't try an elliptical back then, but if your doctor says it's fine, go for it. I lost a ton of weight in the hospital, so i didn't really worry about dieting afterward; however, my strength suffered for years because i was so afraid to hurt myself by working out (still am, thirteen years later). Talk to a professional, get a safe program, and be patient. A diet and stretches/walking might have to suffice for now. |

YES!
And for ME, i am cheap and refuse to get an arm-band thingy for my iPod. So the other day when i was on the elliptical, i kept hitting the chord with my hand and sent my iPod flying across the room. I did this three times. I verbally apologized each time and laughed, and no one laughed with me. Guess it's time for an arm band. |
