Hey guys!!! What a great post idea!! I thought that posting my goal for the weekend would give me the motivation to see it through. I am going home this weekend, and my plan is to eat what I want, not count calories, and not go overboard. I want to live like a normal person for a weekend and prove to myself that I can escape being a slave to food!!! Good luck to everyone else on their "challenges"!!
Weight Gain starvation mode? Apr 07 2008

For all of you out there who are trying to recover from starvation mode and are having trouble with constant hunger no matter how much you eat, I suggest you google the Minnesota Starvation Study. I just read some info about it and realized that eating insane amounts of food and being starving right afterwards is normal. However I am still having some trouble with the 10 pound increase I am experiencing after two days of bingeing. I JUST WANT TO BE NORMAL AGAIN!!!!!! Whenever I eat I just get hungrier, and since I am afraid of slipping into day-long binges, I end up saving almost all my calories for right before I go to bed. I will probably eat about 1000 cals throughout the day, and then have 1000 cals (healthy ones, not junk food) in a 2 hour span right before bed time. Does anyone else do this????

Ok... so I tried to just not count and live like a normal person. The same problem happened... once I started eating I just got hungrier. This led to constant eating throughout the day and eventually feeling really uncomfortable and almost sick, but still hungry!!!! I don't know what to do anymore...... I am so confused, and still hungry, yet feel horrible for going overboard :(

Thanks linny... im having trouble though... everytime I eat I just feel more hungry, so then i get scared that I am going to go overboard and eat tons of food. I have had a few instances when I ate more than usual and then it lead to eating enormous amounts of food... even after this I would still feel really hungry. Should I up my cals by 600 right away???

I know you guys said that starvation mode is when calorie intake is 50% of your BMR, but is it possible to be in starvation mode when you are eating 600 calories under maintenance?? I am supposed to be eating 2600, but have been maintaining on 2000. Even though my deficit is not as extreme as some people, I still feel constantly tired, my muscles ache / feel weak, and I am always hungry. Any thoughts???

Thanks for the post canada. I already eat a lot of high fiber foods like green leafy veggies, apples, and I am addicted to oatmeal (I need to have it every day lol!). I guess my question was more geared towards your guys' opinions about gradual calorie increase versus adding 600 calories to get to my maintenance levels ASAP. I don't want my metabolism to bog down with the extra calories and cause me to gain tons of weight, but at the same time I don't want to further damage my chances of recovering it by eating under my maintenance.

Also any other insight from people who are increasing their food intake and finding that it just makes them hungrier??? It's really depressing because right after meals is when I feel the hungriest (like I want to eat everything and anything).

Maintaining Frequency of Eating?? Oct 31 2007

Thanks for the post playergirl! I am doing well. Some days are good days and others are very emotionally challenging, but its the goal at the end of the road that makes it worth it. I have increased my calories and not put on any weight. I still feel hungry a lot, so that must mean I need to keep increasing. The most annoying thing is that I never feel the good sense of fullness that I used to feel with meals. It is really frustrating and it has been the hardest part of this maintenance period. More than anything I just want to sit down and have a meal that fills me up, but it never happens. I find myself starting to feel hungry again shortly after I finish a meal. Is it possible that I am tricking myself into feeling this constant hunger because I am obsessing about the calories I can and cannot have, and what I am going to eat for the rest of the day??? I dont want to increase to 2600 cals right away, becuase I know if I gain weight I will probably go back into resticition, but I am never quite satieted. I still have huge urges for food and I am always thinking about the next time I will get to eat. What I really want to work toward is intuitive eating. I have read the posting and many articles online and I have started reading the book. It seems like a wonderful concept but I am scared out of my mind to start practing it haha. Oh well.... many things come in time. How is your progress coming along???

Hey benn....

I noticed that you sais everything was so much better when you were only dieting by controlling fat content. I started dieting this way too and went from 215 lbs to about 155-160lbs (im a 18 yr old male). My life was happy and I ate helathy foods when I was hungry. Then for some resason I decided to count calories ( I have no idea why), and although it did make me lose more weight, (im down to about 145 lbs now), it also made me miserable. Now I am stuggling with getting my calories up to 1400 a day and regaining a healthy relationship with food. I was wondering if you or anyone else has any insight into low-fat, healthy food diets (not ones that count calories persay) and their results in reguards to maintenance. I just remember how happy I was when i didnt count calories and I want to go back to that kind of lifestyle, but now that I know about calories and how excess of anything, even if it is low fat, can lead to weight gain, I am scared to drop calorie counting. Any sugguestions or insight?

Hey playergirl,

Just another quick question that I think would answer a lot of people's questions on the website....

I know you said you were doing about 1200 cals a day. Have you gotten to a point where you now know how many calories you need to maintain. According to some calculators I would need about 2500 cals a day!!!! That seems so huge (it seems like i didnt even eat that much when I was very overweight). I was just wondering what number you are at right now and how that is working out for you.

I also wanted to know on a scale of 1 to 10, how much better do you feel now that you have increased your calories and gotten back to healthier eating patterns. Haha, stupid question, but I just wanted to know if it makes a lot of difference (psychologically and physically).

Thanks again!!!!

Hi playergirl, its me again lol!!!

Ok I have been tracking my food and I am at about 1300 calories a day... (still where I was last time). I feel like I am eating a lot of food but little calories. Ususally I have oatmeal for breakfast, then a nice sized bowl of lettuce, a turkey sandwich, and some kind of soup for lunch, and then for dinner maybe another sandwich or a boca burger or something along with a bowl of lettuce, some fruit, and maybe a baked potato or soup. Now when I look at my plate I see a lot of stuff there, but the calories are so few. It ends up making me feel like I ate a lot, but I am never full. It is very frustrating. I can wolf down a whole tray worth of food and still be very hungry (even right afterwards!!!). I think I have trained my mind to eat the lowest calorie foods possible, so that is how I can eat a pretty good amount of food and still end up at about 1300 cals a day. Any suggestions of foods that are healthy and fill you up a lot.... and I mean a lot... im sick of feeling hungry lol!!! Thanks again for all the support youve shown!!!!

Playergirl,

Thank you so much for the positive advice!!!! I will definately try to increase my caloires this week and then we will see how it goes from there. It is going to be hard, especially of some pounds come back... but from what you have said and from other posts I have been reading, it is just a matter of a week or two and the weight will come back off. Hopefully it actually works like this!! Thanks again!!

Hello playergirl... I think I may be in relitivelty the same situation as you....

I am an 18 yr old male and I am currently 5'7" and average about 145 lbs. Last year I was 215 pounds and lost a lot of weight by cutting fat ( i didnt really start counting caloires untill about 5 months ago). Now I am obsessed with counting caloires. Right now I am averaging anywhere from 1000 to 1500 calories a day and I am starting to worry. While eating this number I have maintained a constant weight for about a month (I think). So... if I am maintaining at this low, wouldnt that mean that if I ate any more that I would gain. I exercise everyday (usually run 2.5 to 3 miles, and bike for about 20 min). I cant seem to bring myself to eat more even though I am constantly thinking about food and am minorly obsessed with looking up calorie info and planning meals. I admit that for about 2 months now I have been extremely tired and my muscles feel weak. I am always hungry... even when I eat a meal that would have satisfied me and made me feel full back when I wasnt counting calories, I still feel extremly hungry and then I feel guilty and already start thinking about the next meal and how I can restrict my calories.

Now I know this may sound like a problem... but like I said, I have kept the same weight while living like this, and I dont want to gain any weight. So why do all these calculators tell me that if I slept all day I would need 1700 calories, yet I am maintaining weight with getting 1000-1500 and doing cardio everyday. Any advice or insight is appreciated!!!!

Thank you for the advice.... but what if I start to eat more and just gain weight. According to BMI calcualtors, my weight is where it should be. I just dont want to go anywhere in a direction that leads back to the "old me" (215 lbs).

Thanks so much for all the advice. To give a little better picture I will list a general breakdown of my meals throughout the day:

breakfast- oatmeal with a little cinnamon

lunch- sandwich, carrots, apple, and a cup of dry cereal

dinner- usually whatever my mom makes (some type of meat, a side salad, a vegtable, and maybe rice or some type of fruit)

snack- usually a frozen bananna before bed

OK so thats what I am doing now, and I will admit I am starting to feel very hungry by the end of the day. Does anyone have any suggustions on certin foods that will help me up my calories but are still healthy.... or should I just eat more of the stuff I am already eating??? thanks again!!!
