| restless girl... maybe the measurements could be optional? I bet there are lots of people who would want to do it, to help with the motivation. But, maybe not make it *mandatory*? It's Angiethe1_2005's show, though... what do you think Angie? |

| haha, poor in LA must be different than poor in Canada! I grew up poor and we couldn't afford fruit! All that imported California goodness ;) Mr. Noodles are much cheaper (yikes!) Thank you for your offer of help, that is so great! I followed the zone diet for a while and really liked a lot of the food. It helped me learn a LOT about nutrition, and getting enough protein with each meal. It's how I learned to love cottage cheese for breakfast! Maybe if you have some recipes handy (already saved on your comp?) you could upload them to the recipe section with something like "zone - macaroni dish" or "zone - chicken cordon bleu" or something? Thanks again! And welcome :) |

| Yikes. Spiritedsay, Mindy was only trying to look out for Liosa's health. With that much exercise, that IS far too few calories. Especially at 17 years old, Liosa needs to be making sure she's getting enough nutrients to build and support a healthy body. I think it's great that she wants to be active, but it's easy to go from enthusiastic to overzealous, especially as a teenager. Things are hard enough without adding an eating disorder to the mix! I'm not accusing anyone of having an eating disorder, I'm just acknowledging how easy it can be to take things too far. One granola bar should never be a cause for panic, *especially* with all that exercise! I can also understand that perhaps Liosa is just looking for people to tell her what she already knows - that she's NOT eating enough. Sweetheart, heed the advice - take care of yourself, and make sure you're getting *enough* calories. Especially protein, if you are exercising that much - if you're not eating enough calories but you're exercising, your body will start to break down your own protein (muscles - including your heart!) to feed you with. I don't think that's what you want! Building a foundation for a healthy lifestyle is SO important and I'm so proud of you for starting to do that at a young age. However, if you are restricting your calories too much one of two things will happen: a) you won't be able to maintain it forever, and will say "screw it" and give up the "healthy lifestyle" mantra for good OR b) you will continue being more and more restrictive with your eating, until it consumes your life, and you are convinced that you need to lose weight even when you are just a sack of bones. You DON'T want to go there, it will ruin your life. Eating disorders are *incredibly* destructive - don't let anyone suffering from one try and convince you that undereating is ok. Good luck to you Liosa! And Mindy and Smelko and Spiritedsay :) I wish you lovely ladies the very best. I wish you good health, lots of healthy, antioxidant-rich veggies and lung-busting workouts! |

| I'm in! I'm housesitting and won't be home until Sunday - is it okay if I post my weight on Sunday instead? Alternatively I can give you my weight from a few days ago, I doubt it will change much. It is 131.6. My goal is to lose 5 pounds by the end of July, bringing me to... 126.6. I'm not sure if that is possible, but we'll see. I will keep myself to healthy food and exercising when I can. I'm away a lot in July so I'm not sure how much I can do (housesitting, then visiting my boyfriend's parents (his mom makes GREAT food!), then housesitting again, then going on a road trip to visit my uncle in Idaho, back for a week, then down to Washington State to go camping!). I will be as disciplined as possible though. Good luck everyone! |

| Health & Support | stupid stupid periods and their troubles | Jun 28 2007 20:07 (UTC) |

| Ohhh honey I feel your pain :) I had the WORST periods when I was a teenager. They were really irregular, incredibly heavy (I know what you mean about changing "supplies" more than once an hour!), very painful, and lasted NINE days (heavy the whole time) It turned out I had polycystic ovarian syndrome (but I also had lots of the other symptoms of that). They eventually got better as I got older. I'm now 25 and they're manageable, whether or not I'm on the pill. I'm from BC, and I don't think birth control is covered, unless your parents have extended medical (being 17 you will be insured via their plan). I would recommend talking to your doctor. Ask about options, as well as medications. He/she may be able to prescribe you something a little stronger for the really bad days, or recommend something that works. I usually take tylenol and ibuprofen together (apparently it is totally safe to do so, and they work "synergistically" to give you more bang for the buck, so to speak. However I'm not a doctor, so talk to yours before trying anything new!) I wonder if you had a heart-to-heart with your mom, if that would help. Mom's just want the best for their kids. Maybe if you explain that your periods are really painful and heavy, and that you've talked to your doctor and he/she is recommending you go on the pill to help with your symptoms, she will be more open to the suggestion? Also, if your heavy periods are responsible for your iron deficiency (which I suspect they are), you and your doctor might be able to persuade her that this is reall the best thing for your health. Plus, she will see that you are responsible enough to: a) make a doctor's appt. and talk about this stuff with him/her on your own b) approach her openly about it, without "going behind her back" (ie, you talked to your doc about it but didn't get a prescription before talking to her) c) bring it up in a mature way. Be prepared to talk with her frankly about sex. Let her know that you understand that the birth control pill does not protect against any sexually transmitted diseases, and that if and when you decide to become sexually active, you are prepared to take appropriate precautions. Parents love their kids SOOO much and don't want to see them make the same mistakes that they did, and experience the same pain that they did. I think teens often think they know more about sex than they do. They don't understand the deep regret that can result from having sex when it's not the right time/with the wrong person, etc. Perhaps if you explain to your mom that you understand that sex is a very intimate, very special thing, and that you don't plan on having sex with just anyone, and that you won't let yourself be pressured into having sex before you're ready, etc etc etc - that might help put her mind at ease? You could also offer to make another appt with the doctor, and invite her along, so that the three of you can have a discussion. The thing is, birth control IS a drug. You do need to know all the side effects, risks, what it does and does not do, etc. You also should be prepared to have a PAP done if you're sexually active. If you're not sexually active they most likely will NOT do a PAP, but will expect you to come in for a PAP once you are sexually active. Being in pain sucks. Having really heavy periods sucks. There are things you can do about it, but if you can do it without going behind your mom's back, that would be the best. It might be a good opportunity for you to show her just how grown up and mature you've become? (You can always ask her what she was doing when she was your age, that can be a good reality check as well! LOL). Good luck! Let us know how it goes :) |

| Wednesday weigh in: 131.6 (from yesterday). I'm house-sitting right now, so I've been eating badly today (yikes!). My mom left behind one of her famous cheeseballs (ohhhh so good) and a Lindt orange chocolate bar. Tomorrow I will take the dogs for a long walk, hopefully that will help a LITTLE bit at least :) Good luck everyone! Keep up the good fight :) |

| Weight Loss | My doc got his PhD from BS University | Jun 26 2007 17:46 (UTC) |

| Oh no! :( I'm sorry you had such a terrible experience *hugs*. Definitely switch doctors. Docs are people, and there are as many varieties and "styles" as there are, well, people! Some are very touchy-feely, some are "give it to you straight, damn the compassion", some are very "let's make a plan together" and others are very "this is what I'm telling you to do". And there are patients who like each of those styles! If you're not happy with your doc (and I can understand why!), find a new one. Your doctor needs to be someone whom you can trust, and someone whom you feel totally comfortable with... let's face it, you are going to have to talk about sexual problems and rectal pain and vaginal discharge with this person! He/She will have fingers in places... well, you know how it is. You MUST be comfortable with that person, and be able to trust them! Good luck :) Don't stop looking til you've found the right one. There are loads of good docs out there waiting for "good patients" like you :) |

| nathenag... What about those athletic-looking strollers? (They have them for joggers etc but lots of people use them for walking). They have double ones, and I'm pretty sure they're big enough to hold a 5 year old child. I bet your kids would love going out for walks/to the park etc with you pushing them there and back in the stroller (if it's more than 30 minutes?) Do you have parks near your house? What about walking with them to a playground? They could run around on the equipment, and you could walk around the perimeter of the park (depending on how big it is) while keeping an eye on them. Or, just play some tag and run around on the field with them! Kids have amazing energy, they will give you a workout for sure! :) Don't forget to bring cut up veggies so that you and the kids can have a healthy snack, and you're not tempted to stop at the 7-eleven on the way home :) Good luck! I wish you both well. Being a mom is the highest calling there is - I have much respect and admiration for you both! |

I've been on this site over a year and I've met some truly wonderful people who despite everything they do, can not, for the life of them, lose weight. Sometimes it's due to a drug they need to take. Often, because their body isn't playing by the rules. For whatever reason, sometimes you just can't lose weight, no matter how right you're doing things. You are very right hkellick. This is especially true of the morbidly obese. Once you become "morbidly obese", it is *exceptionally* difficult to lose weight. This is a medical fact, that can be explained by the physiological changes that occur. For some of these people, gastric bypass surgery is the only option. I absolutely, loudly, emphatically cheer on our friends on this site who are morbidly obese and who are fighting to lose weight. Those of us who are not in that position have NO idea the intense battle they go through. And we think it's hard for US to lose weight! I also applaud all of you on this site who do such a wonderful job of encouraging one another. Whether we have 10 pounds to gain or 300 pounds to lose, we are all on the quest for a healthy body and lifestyle together. Let's stick together, folks! It's worth the fight :) |

| Weight Loss | back fat: the bane of my existance | Jun 25 2007 21:27 (UTC) |

| If only we could spot-reduce! Then I would be smaller in the hips and bigger in the boobs! :) The fat always seems to disappear first from where we wouldn't mind it sticking around a bit (for me, in the chest) and it's SOOO hard to lose from our biggest areas. The truth is there is no way to target fat loss from any region. They only thing you can do is to firm up the muscles underneath the fat, which will help things *look* better, and lose overall fat. Good luck! ~Sarah~ |

| Health & Support | anorexic sister | Jun 25 2007 20:21 (UTC) |

| Ohhhh sweetheart. Do NOT restrict your eating just to lose weight. It is NOT worth it. What you want is to look and feel your best, right? You can only do that by eating well and working out. Starving yourself will only result in your body breaking down your OWN MUSCLES for protein. Plus, if you restrict your calories too much, your body will think you are starving... then when you do eat (even a little) it will hang on to those calories and convert them to fat, so you can survive the "famine". Our bodies are truly incredible machines! You should eat well - lots of fruits and veggies, low-fat dairy like skim milk and non-fat yogurt, healthy fibre (I like mixing All-Bran with non-fat yogurt for breakfast) and protein (eggs, tuna, chicken, etc. are all good sources). Furthermore, good food (esp. fruits and veggies) pack a powerful "health punch", with vitamins that are essential for healthy hair and skin, and cancer-preventing antioxidants. Also, do weight-bearing exercise. I highly recommend circuit training, which combines weight lifting with cardio. You want that amazing surfer look that Kate Bosworth had in Blue Crush? You gotta exercise! The anorexic look is NOT hot and it is certainly not healthy. Anorexics have seriously, SERIOUSLY messed up minds. Don't go there. Anorexia is about control, and anorexics have VERY distorted views of themselves (far greater than the rest of us!). They also fear being fat to the point of CHOOSING to DIE as a result of starvation. Their bodies break up the protein in their muscles (including their heart muscle!) to feed their brains. It is incredibly, incredibly devastating. Don't go there. The truth is, it's going to take more than a week and a half to have the body you want. But you can start today, and make a commitment to yourself to lead a healthy, balanced lifestyle for the rest of your life. And remember - "balanced" includes pleasure! So be prepared for good days and bad, for days when you are a "health nut" and for days when you are a "junkfood junkie". Just try to keep the latter ones to a minimum :) And remember... you are still very young! There is SO much you can do for your future self by choosing an healthy lifestyle now. That includes loving yourself for who you are, and never, EVER comparing yourself to your sister. We always compare ourselves to what we believe to be true of others "I wish I was so-and-so, she has it all together!" when really we have no idea about the battles that rage within their own minds. If you believe your sister has a problem, tell your mom or dad. Anorexia is NOT something to be toyed with, and even though she may be very angry at you, she will eventually know that you just love her and were looking out for her. Good luck! Let us know how it goes :) Feel free to PM me. ~Sarah~ |

| Weight Loss | hungry all the time | Jun 25 2007 19:00 (UTC) |

| Veggies are amazing. I swear they are the ultimate diet food! BUT I find that they don't "stick with me" all that long (ie, I can eat a salad, feel full, and then it's not *too* long til I feel hungry again). So I make sure to have cut up veggies with me all the time. I buy a bunch of veggies one day (for me, Sundays) and then I cut them ALL up and put them in ziplock bags in the fridge. I do the same for fruit (like cherries). Then, whenever I am going out, I grab some ziplock bags - cucumber, snap peas, cherries, carrots, whatever. I hang my purse on the fridge door so I won't forget to take them with me. Then I can keep them in the car and eat them when I start feeling hungry... this has kept me from stopping at McD's more than once! Plus I'm eating healthy, so I feel like "I am a healthy person" which helps motivate me to exercise (and not stop at McD's, 7-eleven, wherever). I also do this with hard-boiled eggs. Boil half a dozen, put them in baggies (2 per bag) and grab them with the veggies. I find that having some protein (and "good" fats if I eat the yolks) helps me to keep feeling full for longer. I eat non-fat yogurt mixed with 1/2 a cup of All-Bran for breakfast and that seems to last quite long too. Hope this helps! | |||

| Wow, this is exactly the kind of group I was looking for! Is it ongoing? (ie, can I join or is it too late?) I am 5'4'' and small framed. I weigh 132 lbs. Ideally I would love to be 114-115 lbs, but for now my goal is: end of summer: 122 lbs. I think I can do it. That gives me 2 months to lose 10 lbs - is that a reasonable goal? Last fall I was down to 128 consistently (126 after I got sick - not the way I want to do it!) but this spring I bounced back up to 132 and have not moved. More than the weight though, I would like to be toned and trim - even if the scale never moved and I was 132 forever, but had a firm stomach and arms and no excess flab, I would be happy. So... if I reach that goal without getting to 114 that's totally fine with me. The most I ever weighed was last year (147 lbs!). I worked as a nanny and snacked ALL the time - horrible food. Snacks will kill you. The worst ones are the ones that try to pretend they're healthy, like granola bars. It turns out there were more calories in one of those almond or peanut butter (yummy!) "healthy" granola bars than in the kids chocolate-covered Dipps bars. Yikes. I don't ever, ever want to weigh 147 again - it was NOT healthy for me. So... to recap: age: 24 height: 5'4'' weight: 132 lbs end-of-summer goal: 122 lbs ultimate goal? 114 lbs (?) I will officially "weigh in" on Wednesday :) |
