Young Calorie Counters Controlling calorie intake at the dining hall... Jan 29 2009

They have veggie burgers, but they are always cold, hard, and nasty.  With the salad bar, I have been doing the hard boiled egg thing too, but we have some pre chopped so I put a bit of egg and a bit of turkey on my salads instead of any salad dressing.  I figure that cuts down some on extra cals (or at least makes them healthy ones).

I'm slowly but surely learning what to avoid... so true about the scrambled eggs too, they are a bit shiney at my school, but still way better than making them myself at the apt (especially with not having to do dishes at the hall).  We have yogurt in the salad bar, and I had thought about it, then I thought about what all could have fallen into it (ewww) so I passed on it.  lol

Ohh, I haven't really tried the sandwhich places yet..always so busy, but I did notice today that the East Campus commons (I think it's rather new) that they have soy wraps as well as whole wheat wraps.  I may try that tomorrow... and for breakfast I've been trying my hardest to stick to scrambled eggs and such things that I know I can count on being a certain calorie amount - and staying away from the oh so good waffles, pancakes, and french toast sticks (which I am pretty sure are fried... so I should really avoid them).

Oh, and the grill... always soo good but so unhealthy.  They do grilled chicken fillets... but then they shove them on huge buns - usually white because they run out of whole wheat... then I found that the buns alone are probably about 3-400 empty calories.  I've also been trying to avoid the desert areas... always hard because they have all the home made cakes and different specials everyday. I was in Vermont planning on them having nasty dining hall food that I could only eat enough to not be hungry... but I got way more than I bargained for.

I was on topamax for a number of years from the time I was 14 years old on - and oh my goodness, did it make me flighty. For a few months after coming off it I was still the same with the memory loss. I was worse than my mother and grandmother put together, I would put something somewhere, park the car, or what have you and when having to find it again, whether 2 seconds or hours later, I'd have no clue.  I haven't been the same as I was before it, but I think that's just from my brain not being used to storing that info after 5 or 6 years of not being able to do it due to meds.  I lost no weight on it, actually gained, but I was on a number of other meds too (Had a brain hemorrhage then a severe residual migraine issue that it was used to treat.)

Not that it'll help a whole ton... I'm pretty sure they only list the rotating menu.  But there is the norm -lots of junk, a salad bar (which I frequent but it gets boring) and though they have 'vegetarian' and 'heart healthy 30% or less saturated fat' foods, they are usually pretty calorie filled all on their own.

For the longest time I stuck to it with stickies and dry erase board reminders, but then those started to blend into the background on my walls and such cause they were always there.   Getting back into tracking food is a definite thing needed to stick with the loss though... Personally, I had a month of not sticking to it at all, but am working my way back and trying to remember how I stuck with it so well before.

Funny thing is I've been hearing more about the Canadian election on TV than the American election, now that it is so close, and I'm in the US.  Side effect of being just over the border, I suppose.  They do seem just as cutthroat (if not more) with their advertisement spots too.  Crazy stuff.

jodiferjuniper- Definitely great that you were only off the wagon for a month.  I was off it for almost a year, though I managed to remain about 10 pounds below where I was at the very start of my weight loss it is so weird to be re-losing the weight I had already lost before, and nothing comes off the same way. (last time my torso lost a bunch of fat really soon into it, and now it's not budging!)  So congrats, and hopefully the support of everyone here will help you stick through it (especially through the tough winter months ahead!)

infiniteheart- I started the dance class last night and it was really fun.  I have never done dance before, and I came into a class that had been going for over a month now, so it was kindof hard to catch up on the choreography they were doing, but I enjoyed it.  Luckily the girl that teaches it is just starting an adult class at a different school this week, so I may try that one too to see if starting from the beginning will make it easier to keep up with.  Also, my muscles are more sore today than it has been from any of my targeting exercises or even the power 90 exercises make it.  All the moves that they do use the whole body in some way, so it definitely works the body.

And as of yesterday I was 183.5, 10 pounds down from my start 2 months ago. That made me happy.  Today there was a higher number on the scale because of the fluctuation but I'm still reveling in the lowest number I have seen on the scale thus far.

Definitely try tracking your activities - anything beyond being sedintary/around the house.  You could be eating too much or too little for how much you get around (I'd assume you're eating too little if you walking is your main form of transportation.)  After tracking for a bit you can adjust what you eat, having no more than a 1000 calorie difference between your BMR with activities added in, and your food intake should let your body lose weight without your system going into shock about the low energy/nutrient levels.

Well, my gain started at 14 with prednisone IV drips of 1000mg at a time then after weening only a bit at home I had gained 30 pounds (and some huge, gaping thin stretchmarks) in about 2 weeks.  Even after getting off the steroids I was on other medications that kept me gaining weight, along with the fact that my brain hemorrhage and migraines kept me in bed most of the time.

Fast forward to now, at 21 I finally committed to be healthy after being dragged through hell by an a-hole boyfriend.  He talked commitment and long term, had me move down to Georgia to live with him, in 2 weeks after getting there I had already been out of the house for 4 days because of some dirty texts he was sending a girl.  After I got back he broke up with me, citing things that were wrong with me, but I was stuck down there cause my car had issues.  After another month and a half of hell where I found out he had been cheating all 6 months we were supposed to be exclusive, and that he could have possibly given me a number of STDs (thank god the tests came out all clear), I cut all ties, and committed to the face that I'd never be treated like less than I am worth ever again.  When I got home the first step with that was treating myself great and being healthy.

Within a month I had all but forgotten about him, and was feeling great.  Now, 2+ months back home and I'm seeing all As in my classes, I'm down 10 pounds, and starting dance classes now that it's too cold to run.  I feel awesome, even when I am slightly sick with a cold, and I love concentrating on myself.  I guess it took someone else treating me badly for me to realize I deserve better from myself too!

Well, I've replaced my bread with orgnic, no HFCS and no enriched/bleached flour, it's all whole wheat flour.  I only did that because highfructose corn syrup gives me migraines, along with processed flours - but as a side effect it's less crap for my body to have to filter out.

My running has tapered off due to the cold and having tendon issues.  The dr told me to stop running weeks ago, but I kept trying to fight through it until the freezing cold took over the mornings, and the sun stayed down until I'm already headed to class.  I'm going to start hip-hop classes at a dance school on Monday, and possibly will start jazz/tap classes at another because a girl I have class with teaches it.  Hopefully those will make exercising fun again.  I'm still gradually losing, and only have half a pound left to lose before I am 10 pounds down from where I started this year! (was 193.5 when I started in August!) That makes me happy, as does that I am basically keeping up the exercise despite the drive to start hibernating because the cold and despite all the schoolwork I have.

Oh my gosh... I would love it... if the dude in it wasn't so stupidly boring.  It feels great every time you do it, but for cardio I usually opt for elliptical or running outside instead to cut down on the boringness.  The weight program is good, as is the ab ripper one so I use those together on the weight days.  For me though, the tapes provide no motivation so I need to psych myself up extra just to start then continue through each session.  The mute button will be your friend after you get the routine down!

I am trying to lose way more than that (and am much heavier too) and had only lost 5 pounds in two months, including the starting water/sodium weight that just about fell off.  Over the past week or two my weight seems to be going down a bit more every few days though, so I am being rewarded for sticking it through, or so I think.  I didn't let the slow loss get to me, because as other posters have said there are other reasons to keep with it.

Think of your rewards in ways other than just the scale:

    DO you have more energy?

Do you feel overall healthier? (despite being ill currently)

Are your same old clothes looking a bit different on you?

Do you have better muscle definition?

And the ones I go on the most - can you do better at your chosen physical activity than you could before? (aka: run longer/farther, stay on the cardio machine longer/finish a circuit quicker)  I love this kind of competing with myself, it makes me feel like I've acomplished something with all my work!

If your goal isn't just yo-yo dieting, but losing the weight and keeping it off, losing slower is better.  Also, even if the weight isn't coming off quickly, keeping with it will keep you in the mode of paying attention to what you take in and out; in the end thqat will help you when you get to the maintaining stage and can recall general food cals and about how much an exercise will burn so you won't have to keep logging everything.

Foods Just thougth I would share Oct 01 2008

    10

Sugar is turned into glucose in your body

glucose is needed by cells to live

bits of excess glucose are then converted to the storage form glycogen

glycogen powers your body when it needs energy, but isn't getting food

the mitochondria in your cells changes glycogen back into a form your body can use when it is needed.

Glycogen and glucose are both sugars, along with many others.  Starches are also complex sugrs, and without sugar your body will stop powering itself

Seriously, a bunch of the things you listed that sugar can do are like what drugs 'can do' to people as potential side effects that happen in a tiny percentage of people. Yes, processed food with bunches of sugar is bad.  But like fat is not the enemy (it is also needed in the human body to keep it functioning) sugar is not the enemy.

Yeah, that's how I've been doing it Sunnybra just doing the whole be extra healthy the next couple days thing.  I can do that pretty well, though in the moment it just frustrates me.

gi-jane My calorie target is 1500+ then adding for any exercise I do.  Def not too low, sometimes even too hard to get to (which is why I allow myself some normal snack food on regular days anyways.)  The whole 'don't keep it around' method doesn't work while living with others though.  Oh I've tried. chucked all the junk into the garage... if everyone wants that they may as well have to walk a couple extra steps for it, right? But it all migrates back into the house and always with more coming back in with it from shopping.  That's why my self control is normally a great thing, beyond this time I don't really touch any of that.

I love it! And prettymuch everywhere I've lived for the past 14 years has had at least one full rock climbing gym.  The one near me now has an upstairs with exercise machines you can only get to by climbing and an upstairs for bouldering where you have to climb the slanted ceiling to get up.  I haven't gone muchin the past year (it's expensive) but I love bouldering way more than straight up climbing with a harness.  Going straight up is too easy.  There are also different 'trails' to complete with the bouldering, where they are different inclines and different levels, so it never gets boring.  I would suggest trying it if you haven't yet.

And for all beginners and people afraid of heights, you can start off just traversing the wall.  It's basically walking along the wall (from one side to the other) and it can be done on the lowest footholds of the ground if you're afraid of heights.  It definitely helps your arm muscles get used to it to (the lower arms get a killer work out from all the gripping and those are muscles most people don't use often, so it may hurt the next day.)

Ugh, I have the same issue (yeah, I'm no help here).  Today I did well until it hit 6pm, I wasn't at home, and was running out of energy after waking up at 5am and being in school all day.  I also had this ever-so-convienient coupon for a cold drink at starbucks... $2 less in my pocket, 700 calories more of chocolatey goodness in my stomach, plus a 6 inch battered roll sub with mayo (pre made) from the grocery store, plus a couple cups of wheat pasta and sauce after getting home.  Yeah, today was definitely a day of calories I had to just look at and chock up to my TOM.

I dont trust any of the numbers because while I am small (123lbs) I feel I burn more than a 123 lb person because I have a lot of muscle!

Therefore in order to not fall into a rut of relying on burning these certain calories on this certain machine I gauge activity through the tools on the site which seem to work for me...meaning I don't have to know exactly how many cals I burn at each workout.

Did that make any sense? lol

Yeah, that's what I do too, use the tools here.  The monitors on the machines tend to be way off, but I think possibly the site could be too high with burning on the elliptical too.  more than 600 cals/hr for light, more than 800 for moderate?  I'm not too sure about those either.

I have vanilla whey protein... makes things taste weird, but all the same, I have to use half a serving to not make my shakes dangerously thick.  It usually doubles the volume of liquid I use too, causing it to be 16oz shake from the 8oz of milk I use.  With or without bananas it does this, and with or without ice.

Oh, sounds rough.  I'm dong the same thing as you, but in reverse!  I'm completing community college this semester and moving 1500 miles away to university.  Yeah, CCs are different because everyone has their own agendas, and many work full time plus school, so don't usually just hang around the school.  I tend to have people in classes I am friendly with, yet not friends outside of class.  Sometimes I run into students from my previous semester in a later semester when they are taking another class with me.  When that happens it makes things a little less blah at the beginning of the semester, cause at least you know one person already.   Also, I am more outgoing than some, if someone is having a conversation before class/at breaks across tables I will chime in if I have something relevant to say.  Since everyone is just trying to get to know eachother all the same, nobody gets offended by this in the least.  The first few weeks are just blah in general - not knowing anyone - all classes just starting off slow with boring syllabus/easy work/general rules lectures.  It will get better as the semester goes on.

Weight Loss I can't get rid of this belly! Sep 14 2008
    20:14 (UTC)
    4

Fasting only reduces it because your body doesn't retain as much water while fasting (plus all that sodium gets flushed out).  Fasting shouldn't be to improve the way your body looks anyways, it's only good when done for spiritual reasons, or for other reasons but under a doctors supervision.

Last time I lost weight my belly seemed to flatten more within a couple of weeks, and I was happy as hell.  This time (after gaining back about 10 pounds in the year since the first time) My belly fat still isn't budging.  Granted, I haven't lost much weight on the scale, but I've definitely dropped some body fat % due to building muscle.  I'm not too worried about it though because when I last gained it probably all came back as fat and glued itself in my stomach, so I just have more to move this time.  My body seems to be losing from top (face->neck->breasts->lower arms) and bottom (lower legs->lower thighs) in towards the middle.  It is odd, because I feel that I still look the same everywhere but my face, and my chest has changed sizes only in the band, my breasts are still just as big (now a cup size larger due to band measuerment shrinking).

Anyway, I'd say just keep with it.  It'll come off when it's ready, and don't fret about it.  Also even if it's still there when you reach your goal weight, keep on with the exercising, but eat enough cals to maintain and build muscle and it should eventually move.  The more muscle you have the more calories your body burns!

Personally, when I was temporarily living down south, the mega bulk sized tubs of lard scared me a bit.  Then when I was with someone when they bought it, and used more than half of it to deep fry various things for a family occasion, I was ultra sickened.

But, that's not in-store.  I don't have much issue with the local grocery store food here.  Everything that's high cal, I avoid (and trust that most everything is, as I now am back in Vermont, the land of home grown, home made EVERYTHING!!)  I still pick up the ben and jerry's and the local shortbread every once in a while though.  I'm bad like that I suppose.

lala - Congratulations on the weight loss this week! Just a question - is "Seasonale" affecting your weight loss at all? I'm thinking about possibly taking it myself.

Anyhow, I'm down to 170 this week! Something is finally working. Exercise + calorie cycling = success (for me)!

I hope you're all doing well!

Seasonale doesn't effect it eitheir way as far as I know, but I'm not sure, I've been on BC pills since I was 14 (almost 7 years now!), yasmin up until the beginning of last year.  I started on it not long after I ballooned up 40 lbs in 3 weeks due to very high doses of prednisone through IV for a brain hemorrhage, so I don't know whether to blame the medical condition, the rapid weight gain, or the BC for my inbility to shed any weight over the past 7 years.  But... when I came off of it for a month or two nothing changed (and my cyles continued just as they do while on it... meh I only switched pills for the 3 month benefit).  I'd say try it, but keep in mind the whole 1 year of staying on before your cycle adjusts to it as it should.  Maybe it'll work for you.

Update time:  I've been busy as hell with school.  2 lab classes of 6 hrs a week each and a 4 hr math lab every week, plus online class is kicking my butt.  But, I did make sure to wake up early (5:30AM!) today to get out of the house for some running before having to take off for my early morning chem class (then remained stuck in school till 6pm... so tired!)

Check when your add/drop period ends, then check if any other chem lab classes have open seats, or if there is another class open you'd like to take instead.  Might as well add another class if you drop one either way if you are paying a flat fee for the college you go to.  But most times in univerity/flat rate per semester schools, the system is to fill up your schedule as much as possible with classes you want and need to take, and don't buy books till after the first class because you will find some you want to drop for one reason or another.

I'm in a college where I pay per credit, but I have a chem lab class with an Asian, English as her second language.  I have issues understanding her, and the first day she handed out a stack of papers to all of us that filled up a 5 inch binder plus some, but to my advantage is that the class only has 16 students so she is more apt to make sure everyone is on the same page.

But, just so you know, changing classes is not the end of the world, and you won't get a W or F in a class if you change it before the last add/drop date.  Talk to an advisor or look online for your schools deadlines and rules.
