Weight Loss anyone 5'8"? Apr 08 2008

I am a perfect size 6, with no bulges of fat at 130-135.

When I go under 130 I'm really to skinny. I am at 145 right now(size 8)  and I have been trying to lose the last 10 forever!!! I look pretty good at 145, so maybe that's why I keep falling off the diet bandwagon
Weight Loss Diet Pill "Alli" info Mar 19 2008

I use Alli, and it only blocks a PORTION of the fat you consume.  It only works if you eat a diet that has moderate fat intake (25-30% of daily calories)  not a super low fat intake.  It blocks about 25% to 30% of fat calories you consume.  So you have an extra deficit of around 150 calories in a day.  This combined with a low cal diet, works really well. I lost all of my cruise+holiday weight gain using it.(10 pounds).  Now if I could just lose the last 10!  People get freaked out about the treatment effects, but I've never had ANY! (But then I don't eat 5 or 6  pieces of pizza...just 1-2 small pieces) My mom and dad are using it now, and my dad quit taking it because he was losing to much weight. MEN! It will help you lose weight faster, but it's not a miracle pill.  You actually have to eat low cal too.

I lost about 40-45 pounds on SB after giving birth to my daughter.  I went off of it after a year, and gained back a couple of pounds.  (It's 2 1/2 years later).  So now  I have 10 more pounds to go, and they won't budge!!!!Arggg! I am 5 ft 8 and 145 pounds (size 8). I would do SB again, except it doesn't work for me anymore.  I think my body is determined to stay at this weight, and my BMI is in the healthy range.  It was pretty easy to lose weight the heavier I was.  I lost 20 really fast, and the last 20-25 took 6 more months.

Good luck!

Weight Loss Has anyone tried Alli? Jan 27 2008
17:50 (UTC)
I use Alli, and I've had no treatment effects, even when I cheat.  I have lost almost 10 pounds in a month.  I follow a low calorie diet (1200-1600 cals) but not a really low fat diet (fat 30% of calories). I am really close to my ideal weight, so it's hard for me to lose the last few pounds.  That's why I've tried Alli.  I have been dieting for 3 years, and in a plateau for 1 year.  I am not exercising much, due to surgery on my foot, so it's pretty much all dieting for me.  Alli pretty much works the best in the 1st 6 months of taking it, so most people will not be on it long term.
Weight Loss Stretch Marks. Jan 27 2008

I had HORRIBLE stretch marks on my belly from pregnancy- they were bright red abd 1/4 inch wide and  a few inches long.  I used Strivectin cream, which is terribly expensive but worth it.  I don't have any marks on my stomach now. (not even white lines) i do have some on my hips from puberty, and they are still there.  So I think it only works on fresh stretch marks.

I use Alli, and I have lost almost 10 pounds in a month.  Alot of people are freaked about the so called "treatment effects" ie oily gas etc.  i haven't had any problems, even when eating pizza.  I have tried every diet pill out there, including hoodia.  Hoodia helped curb my appetite, but I only lost a pound or 2.  I am so close to my goal weight, that it's really hard to do it on my own.  So I will use Alli until I lose 5-10 more pounds.
Weight Loss Does coffee make you store fat around your midsection? Jan 26 2008

update..

I found the link between caffeine and cortisol levels in this article.  Since coffee has caffeine, it must raise cortisol levels.  (Even decaf has some caffeine)  I don't think science backs up the ideas that Dr Perricone advocates.  I will continue to drink coffee within reason, and not worry about this one.

No- and here's a critical look at Dr Perricone's research, which is where this idea comes from.

http://www.quackwatch.com/11Ind/perricone.htm l

I think coffee consumption adds to weight gain when you add lots of full fat milk and sugars.  There is no strong evidence to suggest that coffee even raises cortisol levels.  I would challenge people to show verifiable evidence of this.  Please cite sources.

The Lounge Which Democrat and Which Republican are Most ELECTABLE? Jan 13 2008

I am pretty conservative, but not tied to either party.

I think Obama for democrats, he could inspire more people to vote for him due to his message. Although some won't vote for him because he's black. Hillary has to many detractors, and she is a woman. I don't think a woman will be elected to the presidency for at least 20 years. (And people that were born before 1940 are mostly dead)  Many racist and misogynistic men would rather vote for a male than a woman.

Republicans: No front runner yet.

I take Alli, and I haven't had any problems even though I go over my fat grams limit.  I have lost 8 pounds in 3 weeks, and typically I lose 1-1 and 1/2 pounds a week while dieting without Alli.  I started using it to get over a plateau, and I have 12 pounds to go.  I eat 1400 calories a day, with around 50 or so fat grams a day. It works only if you watch your calories. (I don't exercise much)

1. Eat breakfast every day

2. Eat fiber throughout day (i also use s/f metamucil if I am hungry at night)

3. Take flax seed oil supplements and vitamins in the evening with caffeine free tea.

4. I read/go on the computer/ take a long bath/ or have some intimate time with my spouse

5. Do some moderate/easy exercise(which cuts down on your hunger) stretching, walking, slow on elliptical all count
Weight Loss American size 0? Nov 29 2007
03:53 (UTC)
25
Sizes have changed in the US because there are no set standards, and vanity sizing.  One important thing to note, is that  people are getting taller with each passing generation.  My grandmother was under 5 foot, my mother is 5 ft 3, and I am 5 ft 8.  The pediatrician thinks my daughter will be 6 ft tall. The taller you are, the bigger your measurements will be at a normal weight. So a size 6 from 1950 is much smaller in measurements than a size 6 today, because todays standards are for a taller and thus bigger woman. That's why Marilyn Monroe was a size 10-12 (she was very petite) and could probably fit into a size 6-8 today.
Weight Loss Thanksgiving Question Nov 11 2007
04:09 (UTC)
I eat a normal sized Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, without counting calories. I don't stuff myself, and I eat whatever I feel like.  Of course, that's just 2 Meals!  The rest of the day, I eat like I would normally.  If I'm tempted, I just think...ooo I'll have some of that at dinner. (No Seconds!!!But yes to pie!)  I never gain a pound over the holidays or a cruise. (I also walk in the morning and after dinner)
Weight Loss How Often Should One Weigh Themselves? Nov 11 2007

I weigh almost every day at the same time.  I do this to keep track of my weight and keep it in a 5 pound range.  I don't worry until I gain 4+ pounds- it's usually  due to normal weight fluctuations.  When I gain weight,  I just cut back a little until I'm back in the "safe" range.  Some people  can't do this, but it helps me maintain my weight.
Weight Loss Think Thin, Eat Thin? Nov 11 2007
03:39 (UTC)
I was always a healthy weight until I got pregnant. I gained 50-60 pounds, and I lost it over the next few years.  I never thought I couldn't, and I stayed positive.  I just watched what I ate and walked 30-45 minutes a day.  I had regular cheat times and plateaus like everyone else does, but I didn't beat myself up about it.  I think weight loss is a mental as well as physical challenge.  I think when people hate themselves, they sabotage their success.  I had a mental image of myself being thinner, and I focused on that. I still have a couple of pounds to go, but it may take me another year to get there.  I will get there though!

Think Thin and love yourself!

You need to stop beating yourself up about the way you look.  I knew so many beautiful models that would pick themselves apart.  You are beautiful!  Keep saying that to yourself, even if you don't believe it.  Every time you look in the mirror and start focusing on the "negatives"- stop and look at a part of you that you like.  Ask your friends and family to write a list of your best attributes.(Physical and personality)  Use these lists if you can't find anything about yourself that you love.  You are not fat, but you perceive yourself as fat.  Try to love your body more through this mental technique.
Weight Loss Do you still absorb the calories if they pass through quickly Nov 11 2007

You will still absorb most of the calories, just not absorb the water because it bypasses your colon.  It still travels through your small intestine, and that is where the nutrients/calories are absorbed.  It may seem like you lost weight, but it's just water weight.
Weight Loss Depo Provera shots causing extreme weight gain? Nov 11 2007
03:12 (UTC)

Weight gain might be a side effect of depo, but it's more likely caused by aging and habits.  I was on it for years and years and never gained weight.  I also got it after having a baby (in my early 30's) and lost 50 pounds while on it.  My sister was on it for a year or so, and she gained weight.  Of course she kept gaining after she was off it too. Shes a size 14-16 and I'm a 6-8.  I don't see how it can make you gain weight unless it makes you hungrier or retain water.  Oh- BTW my mom took 1 depo shot after I was born in 1974.  She was skinny for 10 years after that, but still blames it for her weight gain ha-ha!  her and my sister both blame it, not the cheese enchiladas, queso, and desserts.
Weight Loss Artificial Sweeteners, Splenda Nov 11 2007

I use splenda in moderation. (In tea and coffee and yogurt)It is a big calorie saver for me, because I only aim for a few hundred calorie deficit a day.  I eat a balanced and healthy diet with very few processed foods, and I went from a size 12 down to a 6-8.  I think it may give some people digestive problems, but they may be using a TON!  Try it, and if you like the taste Go For It!  It has been shown that people who have alot of tastebuds(supertasters) don't like any artificial sweeteners.
Weight Loss Fiance not being totally helpful Nov 11 2007
02:46 (UTC)
My exfiance was critical of me in a passive aggressive way.  He was controlling of me in a sneaky way, by the comments he used to make/faces he would make etc...  I'm not saying your fiance is doing this, but he might be.  Think about this BEFORE you get married.  I thank God all the time for showing me that I shouldn't have married that man.  My husband(12 years)  would never make a comment about my weight/looks/etc.  He loves me unconditionally.  I would talk to him about how his comments make you feel, and how it is Your  body not his!

Good luck!

They airbrush pictures all the time in the industry, but they prefer not to. (usually small flaws) The people that are the most likely to be "fixed" are celebrities, because while they are attractive they may not be model material.  All professional models must be a certain height/weight depending on the market they are in.  Even plus sized models must not be to small or large.  Most models are VERY young and genetically predisposed to look the way they do.  Don't envy them, because as they age they become normal women too.  I used to be a model, and it's not a place I would wish for my daughter.  It's shallow and damaging to self esteem.  BTW most of them are over the hill at age 21.  Stop looking at any magazines, and use photos of real women for inspiration.  I try not to look at the ads in magazines, because that sets me up for unrealistic expectations.(And I used to look like they do!)

Here are some generalizations about each market

Japan-small and teeny tiny with huge eyes-they loved me

LA- bigger boobs, longer hair, usually fit looking and toned

NY- edgier, skinnier, and TALL

Europe- skinny, tall, and not classically pretty
Weight Loss Sex not an activity? Oct 01 2007

Dr Oz said on Oprah that sex doesn't burn that many calories.  Most of the time you are laying down, and how many of you work up a sweat?  If you want sex to burn more calories, stand up!  I would say sex probably burns as many calories as walking at a slow pace.  The guys probably burn more calories, but not to much more.

I used to be a model a million years ago, and I would have men stare at me on the street and make comments about how good looking I was.  I was SUPER SKINNY!  I had a million dates, but I had a hard time getting a boyfriend.  They saw me as a sex object and not as a partner. I would cry myself to sleep at night because I just wanted someone to love and cherish me.  Then I got older and gained weight, and voila I had boyfriend allure!  I had a few marriage proposals, and I finally met the ONE!  He loves me for who I am, and he loves the way I look.  I'm not perfect looking, but I am perfect for him.  He still finds modelesque women attractive, but that's just a fantasy.  Be happy with who you are, and happy with the one you are with.  Men are not complicated on this issue!
Weight Loss Body Size: The new class distinction? Sep 29 2007
18:42 (UTC)

I think that weight gain is a problem for every class, and isn't a sign of being in a lower "class".  I think it is easier to be slim if you have alot of money, because you can hire trainers and pay for diet food delivery.  You have more time to focus on diet and exercise. You can also afford bariatric surgery and liposuction.

That being said, many wealthy people are overweight.  Look at how long it took Oprah to slim down.  Paris Hilton's mom is not a stick figure. My mom struggles with weight, even though she doesn't work and is not stressed over money.  The people in the lowest social class have a disadvantage, and that is why a higher percentage of them struggle with weight.

Add 1 exercise session to your week
Weight Loss When does 3500 calories not equal 1 pound? Sep 29 2007
18:27 (UTC)
Weight loss is very complicated.  Your body is designed to gain/maintain weight, because our ancestors needed to survive harsh conditions.  That's why our bodies resist losing weight when we restrict calories.  It lowers your metabalism so you burn fewer calories, thus setting you up for a plateau.  You just need to stay with a healthy diet and exercise, and you will eventually break through.

Calorie counting is a wonderful  tool, but you also need to focus on the kind of calories you are eating.  Fiber is an important addition to cal counting, because every gram of fiber you eat translates into a 7 calorie loss.  Calcium is an important nutrient to get, because it can help increase fat loss.  (Some controversy about why this works/if it works.  The dairy industry funded some studies that linked it to low fat dairy consumption, but newer studies suggest it's the calcium)  Essential fatty acids have shown a direct correlation to increased weight loss in some studies, probably because they increase satiety(feeling full longer).

My tips:

1. Fiber

2. Calcium

3. EFA- omega 3's, omega 6, CLA (conjugated Linoeic acid)

When I was in college, and on a STRICT budget, I still was able to eat healthy. (Sometimes I went hungry- but not to often because I got smarter as a shopper) I think everyone can eat healthy food on a budget, but it takes effort and pre-planning.

Dry beans and Bulk regular rice- cheap, delicious and  a complete protein when combined. I would make the beans in a slow cooker, and the rice on the stovetop.  They are good for a week, and can go in many recipes together or seperately. (add to soups, burritos, made into refried beans)

I would buy a roasted chicken for 4.99, which could feed a family of 4.  Then I would boil the carcass to make stock.  I never threw out potato peels, onion skins, celery stalk ends etc... Would save in freezer and add to stock for flavor.  I would freeze the extra stock to use for soups and making rice.

Buy day old bread (reduced to 1/2 price) and freeze. It will stay good for a long time.  Take out what you need a little bit before to defrost. Can toast it frozen.

Buy Spaghetti in bulk-  you can add any veggies.  I used canned goods that were 1/2 price because they were dented.  I would use 1 small can tomato sauce + spices if I was really short of $.

Buy hamburger meat in large package, split and freeze.  It's much cheaper than any other meat.  Buy the full fat version, fry, and rinse with water after done to remove fat.

Buy frozen vegetables when on sale

Buy generic oatmeal   make in advance and it's good for several days

Buy frozen OJ mix it with 2X the amt of water, and it will last 2X as long

Buy generic powdered milk- it's much cheaper than regular milk, and you get used to the taste.  You can add it to oatmeal, or add it to rice along with sugar for a "pudding".

Almost all recipes can be made with less oil, and substituting some eggs with egg whites.  Two egg whites=1 whole egg. (But don't substitute all the eggs for egg whites)There have been many people who have done the work for you.  Go to RecipeZaar or any other recipe website.  You don't need to buy a cookbook.  I will post a few low-fat recipes for you on the recipe section. Cheers
