22 years old, 5'7" tall.

last week: 216
this week: 218

I gained. :(

Mostly because I ate crud and got off track with exercising.  It's no mystery :)  I just went to the grocery and got some good food and the past few days have gotten back on track with exercise.  So next week should see a loss.
Weight Loss losing inches vs losing pounds Aug 06 2007

What we need to tell whether this is realistic or weird:

so, you weigh 170 now, right? How tall are you?

And what parts are you measuring?  List them, i.e., chest, waist, hips, arms, thighs?

I can tell you I started at 236 and at 216 (-20lb) I have lost 7.5 inches on chest, waist, and hips added together.

tuffghost--yikes.  didn't realize she was already underweight.  Pointing her toward some healthy information still might help.  I absolutely know what you mean, it's not willpower (her saying this was the HUGE clue she is not thinking healthily about food).  For me it was panic and terror and worry -- and then, when bingeing -- absolute hatred.

I think talking more about eating healthier rather than counting calories would be helpful for her.  "Cutting down" to 1800-2000 calories only seems like eating a little bit when you're eating total crap.  Calorie counting can only lead to badness.

I just want to reiterate about loving her but not getting too involved in making her see the light-- I have a couple people on my other blog site that I talk to that I know are triggering me and I have to cut ties.  And they're not even in real life.

jainasolo- I get what you're saying, especially about obsessing over numbers, calculations, and plans.  But I'm glad that at least sometimes you're thinking about it in a realtively healthy way-- in a wanting to improve way.  I hope you're doing well.
Health & Support Anorexia/ Binge Eating Disorder Aug 05 2007

I know this -- my therapist calls it 'all or nothing disorder' (we both have a sense of humor).

For me the feeling of a binge was/is having anything I wanted, and also feeling really full and safe.  Calling someone you're close to is a good idea, because it gives the same kind of full and safe feeling you're craving.

The other thing to do is remember not to starve yourself either to make up for a previous binge or a future one.  I inderstand the impulse--you feel like you've eaten enough calories for the week!  But it's only going to lead to more bingeing.  The hungrier you are, the more sway the 'binge' personality has over you.  Eat normally and healthily, even if you binged the previous day or are afraid you will binge later.  I know that the bingeing isn't all about hunger, but being hungry makes a binge way more likely.

Try not to hate food.  We need it to live.  Hate your attitude toward food.  That way, eventually you can build a healthier relationship with it.

Hope some of this helps.

I am a big-time binger.  One of the ways I avoid bingeing is to have pre-made snacks in the cabinet that are about 100 calories (you can get 100-cal packs or, better yet, get snack-size ziplocks and fill them with 100 cals worth of baby carrots, pretzels, m&ms, whatever you tend to crave).  Whenever you start to get hungry, eat one of them!

Don't wait until you're super-hungry because the 'binge' part of your brain will take over and you will eat TONS practically on autopilot (I know you know how this feels!).

The other thing I do is if I'm already in the middle of it and I get control of my brain for even a second, I stop, take a deep breath, and count up the calories I've eaten so far.  Maybe even log them on here.  Sometimes I'm suprised that what I think is a hopeless motherlode of gluttony is actually only 800 or 1000 calories so far -- still too much at once, but not my entire life ended.  It can really help me stop the binge there and then instead of continuing.

One more thing--schedule in the food you're craving or that is calling you from the refrigerator the next day or on a 'cheat' day.  It's a lot easier to say "I can have that tomorrow" or "I can have that Sunday"  than "I'm never eating ice cream again."

Hope some of this helps you!

Right now I'm 216 down from 236.  Eventually I'd like to be 140.  I'm 22-- I'm over being a teenager and wanting to be super-skinny.  Really I just want to be like a size 6/8/10 and the right shape (have a waist, no horrible back yuck, get rid of arm chub).

Monday is coming and I have been horrible this week (freaking vacation and Hershey Chocolate World!  Ahh! They had the rainbow Twizzlers they only sell at Hershey.  I need them.).  I did go swimming and walk a lot, but I know the scale will not be nice to me.

I've been losing pretty steadily so far . . . I'm not worried about staying the same (it's just a week) but I'm terrified about gaining because 20 pounds was such an awesome landmark for me.

I guess just venting . . . obviously the advice is: eat right and exercise now, and put Chocolate World behind you.  But I am so angry at myself right now, especially because now when I have an 1800 calorie day (instead of my target 1500) I feel like I'm still sliding, instead of having a little metabolism-boosting fluctuation.

Weight Gain advice on gaining weight Aug 03 2007

Eat healthy foods as your new calories, and do resistance/weight training that will help you build muscle and prevent osteoporosis.

Lots of protein, some carbohydrates, lots of fruits and veggies.  I'm sure the links clairelaine will help with balanced nutrition.

As for how to do it, I'd suggest something like an extra 100 calories a week over what you're comfortable with.  Add 100 calories every week (of healthy foods) until you're at a healthy calorie level . . . with 1200 calories as a minimum, plus eventually 'eating back' what you exercise, and eventually enough to gain some weight back, because you are a bit underweight.

But one step at a time.

By eating healthy foods as your new calories and exercising (especially resistance/weight training!  You gain muscle, which looks smaller than fat and keeps you strong and healthy.  Plus weight-bearing exercise prevents osteoporosis.), you can be sure you're going to gain weight the healthy way and you don't have to worry about it going in the wrong places.
Health & Support insufficien sleep = constant weight loss? Aug 03 2007
03:56 (UTC)
Some people are natural 4 hours/4 hours sleepers.  Instead of going through 2 REM cycles in one lie-down, they get up for a couple hours at about hour 4 of sleep (when they come out of their first REM cycle), then go back down and get 4 more restful hours of sleep.

It's a PITA, but I've discovered I'm one of these, so I find things I can do in that middle-of-the-night me time.  Some people aren't getting enough sleep because they think they're 'awake for the day' after the first cycle.  I used to do that all the time and I was soooooo sick, I caught every bug and was very cranky to boot.

As Jenmcc mentioned, sleep issues are often related to depression (also malnutrition and stress are big culprits).  Of course, sleep issues can also cause depression, malnutrition, and stress, so that can be a chicken and egg problem.

tuffghost-- I would point her toward something that would give her healthy advice about food and calories if she does want to lose weigh healthily.  Fitday.com is pretty good, similar to this site.

Seems like she doesn't realize the seriousness of what she's talking about (which is pretty . . . sandpaper-y?  I can't find the word, especially with first-hand info from a friend.).  She needs real information (her comment about willpower/500 calories . . . a regular person with the facts would say something more like, "I want to be healthy," or "I don't want to hurt myself."  And just poking around is going to lead her into a lot of Pro-ED BS on the net, not real information.

Other than that, I wouldn't get too 'involved' in her dealing with this.  In order to continue to be a good all-around person, you have to stay healthy and convinced in yourself.  Hope that's helpful.

Weight Loss stop drinking that diet pop Aug 03 2007

couldn't believe that it took all those posts for trustwomen to say SODIUM . . . because that's all it is with that 2-3 pounds.  It's extra sodium making you retain 'water weight'--which is what it sounds like.  You're not losing fat, just some extra liquid.

And while extra sodium isn't good for you, and caffeine and artificial sweeteners probably aren't, this isn't something that I think is a life-and-death issue.  Diet coke has helped me lose weight--if I want some kind of 'taste' or something, I can drink diet coke instead of eating chocolate or popsicles.

That said, things like caffeine, aspartame, and sodium affect everyone differently.  If the soda is making you feel bad, or you think it might be, stop drinking it for a while.

Certainly drink at least as much water as soda, hopefully much more (which will help with the water weight, too).  But if you like it and it's helping you--it's only as bad for you as the sun, and air, and the tainted cow meat . . . blah.  There is no one factor making you fat or unhealthy.

Sorry if this is harsh or crazy-disorganized, I'm a little tired right now.

cupidsvictim-- I get that having a different body than you're used to can be upsetting.  But from a stranger's POV, you look good.  You have a nice shape and you don't look 'big' to me, just average.  Plus, of course, you're on here losing weight, so you'll be smaller before you know it--and it'll be good to see how far you've come.

That's great!

You can't imagine how many times I've laid out numbers for people and they've told me: whatever, I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing.

The fact that you don't think about walking is funny--walking is my main form of exercise (I do jump rope for five-ten minutes before hand to get started burning).  You walking to and from the gym= my entire day's exercise.

Your body does 'get used to' a certain level of activity and you aren't necessarily improving cardiovascular health by walking every day, but you are maintaining it.  Regardless, it burns the same number of calories as if you never walk around, because of conservation of energy (yay physics).  So it's not bad to do elliptical and all that to get all Lance Armstrong'd out, but make sure to eat back the calories you exercise in order to stay out of starving mode.
Weight Loss how to control hunger when you go to bed late? Aug 01 2007
06:26 (UTC)
If you know you're going to go to sleep late--space out your meals.  It's okay to eat dinner at 10pm if you don't go to bed 'til 3.

If it's at all possible get more sleep.  However, not sleeping does actually burn more calories than sleeping (your body will replace food with sleep or vice versa) so it's alright to eat a piece of peanut butter toast or something and go over your calories.

And eat before you're starving . . . if you start to get a little hungry and it's going to be a long day/night, make sure you eat lots of protein so you can skip the empty sugar cals later.

Hope this helps.
Weight Loss what helps suppress your appetite? Aug 01 2007

I drink 2 or 3 glasses of water.
I get out of the house without cash on me--so I can't buy snacks (go for a walk or window shopping).
Brush your teeth, exfoliate, do a pedicure, etc.
I also chew gum but I've seen people on here say that makes them more hungry (I just like chewing, plus it burns some tiny amount of calories, like, the amount in a stick of gum).

I also try to make my bedtime earlier.  I tend to give into cravings after 10pm . . . so now my bed time is 10:30.

If I do give in, I do jumping jacks, lunges, etc. while the food is cooking or before I can eat the ice cream or whatever.  At least I'm burning off something.

I entered all your junk into caloriesperhour.com (which is cool)

214 (walking)
297 (elliptical)
106 (running)
296 (calisthenics)

= 913 calories and over 2 hours of exercise!

Your RMR (Resting metabolic rate--assumes you do something other than sleep) is about 1750 calories.  If you do nothing, you burn this much.  That is, if your metabolism is healthy.  If you've been eating 1200 calories and exercising like this, you are in starvation mode.  Exercise less--way less--like 300-400 cals per day and increase your calories by 100/week until you're at a healthy level.

Regardless of your frame size, you don't have much to lose (like 2 pounds before you're underweight.  Your body is sticking at this weight for a reason!  The BMI charts have a range because they are made for people with small-large frames.  People who shouldn't fit within them on the low side are people missing limbs or people who want to have osteoporosis before menopause.

Hope all this helps.

A guy I worked with-- who I knew had a wicked crush on a girl from another close by store in our chain.  He didn't know her name but from his description (pretty, dark hair, funny, wears sneakers) I thought he was talking about Stacy, who is taller than me and is a size 0 with a knockout face.

Of course, when I got 'traded' to that store and he came to visit me, he pointed out his crush to me-- Emma--5'2", chubby, nice-looking but not striking.

His main qualifications were: dark hair, loud, smart, and a sense of humor.  (Loud seemed weird but he thought it was necessary because he's a quiet one).

cmama-- me too!  It seems like I lose nothing unless I eat 1400-1600 calories per day, regardless of exercise.

peachynerd-- I looked at some of your other posts to try and get an idea-- hon, just eat more.  You're young, you exercise a lot, I don't know the exact number (because I don't know your stats or exact exercise routine) but at least 1500-1600 per day, probably more.  Lots of protein, fruits and veggies, and whole grains.

& I'm still interested to try and figure out if you're really burning 900-some calories in a workout!

well . . . what was your workout?  And then we can go to figuring out what's up.

The categories for exercise seem pretty general . . . I mean, there's one category for basically every kind of dance-- skanking (high-energy jumping, kicking, flailing stuff) doesn't burn the same number of calories an hour as practicing bellydance moves.  I usually just use it as a guideline.

In ANY case, most of what I've read on this site says that 1200 calories is the minimum to be eating if you're not exercising AT ALL.  Most people say you should be netting (BMR+exercise minus calories eaten) about 1200.  They also don't advise a deficit of more than 1000 calories.

loosingthepounds-- 220 is an awesome short term goal.  It was sort of a magic weight for me (I'm only a few pounds under it now).  My start weight is deceptive, I have weighed up to 250 pounds, but it sort of came off gradually without trying too hard once I started working on my feet.  But 220 was where I started feeling pretty and when my measurements started to show my real shape (46-38-48-- I was shocked that there's some kind of body in there!)  Keep it up!  I want you to succeed!

Sasha- Thanks for the comeraderie!  I think maybe planning out healthy meals in advance is the way I need to go to curb that kind of thing.  Because I wasn't looking for extra snacks or anything, just something to eat for lunch, and it was making me freak out to think about calories, and healthiness, and easiness to prepare all at once.  We've run out of lean cuisines, you see.

And . . . also to you . . . I'm always trying out different kinds of exercise, so I'd use that kind of thing as an excuse:

Well-intentioned busybody: "Oh!  You've lost weight!"

Nervous subject of interrogation: "Really?  I've been biking/ice skating/playing volleyball lately, it must be more work than I thought!"
