And I repeat once again, I am NOT obsessing about this. I just merely asked for some advice. Do not jump to conclusions when you do not know me or what kind of parent I am. There is no leaving her alone to do because I have not said anything to her about it in the first place. My daughter and I have open communication and a great relationship. I can talk to her about anything, even something like this. In my opinion I would be a bad parent if I showed no concern at all. Even though it does not apply to her, childhood obesity is a major issue these days that we as parents need to monitor.

I went to bodybuilding.com and picked out different exercises for each body part. I go back periodically to find different ones to change it up. No pink dumbells for me. Weight plates on the barbell or dumbells and a bench. We used to have a weight machine but we like the free weights better.

Talking about pants, it is so hard to find ones that aren't low rise.

Thanks everyone for your input. jcl76 summed up my feelings exactly. I am not concerned that she is overweight at all right now. But everyone knows how it starts with a few pounds here and there and before you know it you are overweight. And if anyone thinks I am obsessed with this you couldn't be further from the truth. Her dad mentioned it to me first and my daughter herself noticed it before anyone said anything to her. I agree her grandmother should not have said anything. I would not have said anything to her myself. I was just thinking that the weight training will add muscle to her. She will probably get even bigger in size but lose some of the fat. We have a great relationship and do alot together. I agree that school lunches are not always the healthiest but there are no pop or junk machines in the school.

Part of my post was an observation also. I have noticed this trend in alot of girls from the ages of 25 under. Is it just because the pants are cut so low that the lower stomach is not held in? The girls are all healthy weight wise but they have this area of fat that is prominent. I was just wondering if it is our diets, the hormones and additives in food or the clothing styles that causes this? No offense is meant to anyone because I am working on this area myself.

Fitness Calling all runners!! Aug 27 2009

How about running outdoors? I started out on the treadmill. I walked first and then added jogging. I then took my running outside. I didn't realize how different the two are. Running outdoors is much harder and I think much more interesting. If you can find a running parter, even better. I still have times when there is a "mental barrier" especially when I do a 5k race. I have to push myself sometimes to keep going. I try to think of the many reasons to be thankful that I can run when there are so many that aren't able. That usually gets me going a little faster! Keep up the good work!    Laughing

I wear either a ball cap or bandanna during spin class. My hair is short and cut in a way that the front is a little longer. If I don't wear something on my head and tuck all the hair in, the sweat will be running in my eyes. That is when I miss longer hair that can be pulled back.

Fitness embarassing sweat marks...gross!! Jun 04 2009

My daughter is 13 and has had a sweating problem for a few years already. We have tried everything- regular antiperspirant, clinical strength, prescription dri-sol. It is so hard for her because she will have sweat marks on her shirt for no reason, even when it is not hot out. You know how embarassing everything is to a teenager. Well I took her to her dermatologist and they prescribed a medication that controls the sweating. So far it has worked. They also suggested if that didn't work there are other therapies such as botox and electrical current that will control the sweating. I don't know how invasive anyone is willing to be to control it. The medicine is not covered by our insurance though thank goodness it is not expensive at $40 a month.

I have to agree with chaotickitty. I worked at McDonalds back in the 80's (of course I can't vouch for how anything is now) and we kept the prep table clean and actually the chicken was cooked in a separate area of the grill away from the beef. We did not have snack wraps then but we did make chicken fajitas. I think it is that way with any chain or even small restaurant. You get good ones that follow procedure and bad ones that don't care. Actually if a customer had a special request as to how their sandwich was made we did "give a crap" and complied.

Fitness How hard is it really for a couch potato to do the 'couch to 5k'? Feb 05 2009
19:49 (UTC)

Back in June 2007 I decided to lose some weight and get fit. I started walking on the treadmill and by March of 2008 I started walking in 5k races. I saw all the runners there and thought to myself, "Hey I think I want to do that too!" By the end of the month I was running on the treadmill and just beginning to attempt to run outside. The first time I ran outside I went probably less than 1/2 mile and thought I was going to die. Well I kept at it and ran my first 5k in May 2008. I get lazy every so often and quit running for a week or two but I always go back. I never ran as an adult before and I am 45! So I didn't start until I was 44. I know you can do it!

Ha! I hear you. I am constantly told by my co-workers that I don't "eat" when in reality I probably eat more than they do but healthy choices so I keep the weight off. I made these choices for myself and gave up caring what others think.

I once once made sugar cookies for a boyfriend and forgot to add the sugar!  Talk about tasting like cardboard!  (He wasn't my boyfriend for very long after that!)  lol

Don't feel bad I did that once too! My husband said they tasted like crackers. When I was newly married I didn't know how long to boil corn on the cob and we cooked it for about 45 minutes! Talk about tough corn.

Holy smokes... How do you people survive on 1200-1500 cal a day?? Do you not even climb stairs or something? Work from home?

I do 2,000 and have been loosing weight like crazy. Four workouts per week, some daily walking to work, shopping - nothing drastic. I get so hungry even on 2,000 but 1200???? That would have finished me during the first three days.

You have to remember that the amount of calories that you need depends on your age and stats. I have a desk job. I am only 5' tall and a small frame, and 43 years old. I work out about 6 days a week and according to CC I need 1400 calories without exercise. So if I burn about 300 calories with exercise, that puts me at a 500 calories deficit. I plan on gradually increasing my calories to maintain though and maybe I can actually eat way more, I don't know.

Is there any way to change your lifestyle a little to include at least 30 minutes of exercise a day? When you exercise especially a combination of cardio and weight training it benefits your health in so many ways. It makes you feel and look younger (although I don't know how old you are). Believe me, this comes from a former sedentary couch potato that ate junk food all the time. I am 43, 5 ft tall and I don't plan on maintaining on 1200 calories. I exercise to be healthy and best of all to be able to eat more.
Maintaining Confused about Calories and Steady Weight Nov 14 2007
17:53 (UTC)
I have been eating around 1200 calories to lose the weight. I plan on adding 100-200 more calories daily for a couple of weeks to see how my body will react. If I am still losing I will add another 100-200 calories until I am not losing anymore. Believe me I will eat the occasional cookie, candy, or junk food. I am lifting weights because I believe that it is the best way to change your metabolism and body composition so you can actually eat more. Muscle will burn some extra calories for you. There are other ways to be successful at maintaining. Truthfully, if I had to live the life of food obsession, I would rather be overweight.

This site has proven to be the best for me. I have lost almost 25 pounds since the end of June. So my weight loss has been a little quicker than what CC had predicted. I am small and the calorie reccommendation for me was 1200 which I have stuck to about 90% of the time. I do have days when I go slightly over and even days when I go way over. It was so easy and best of all the site is free!

Wow. I am 5 feet tall myself and almost at my goal weight of 105. I can't imagine weighing 10 pounds less than I do now. The main thing is your health not what the scale says. Starving yourself will not work in the long run. Eat at least 1200 calories, get plenty of protein and do a mixture of weight training and cardio. I'm not sure how old you are, but if a 43 year old body responds to that method I bet yours will too.

I am currently 106 lbs and 5'0", 43 yrs old. I'm not sure what kind of workout you do, but I have been weight training and I find it to be an excellent way to trim off the inches, not necessarily the weight. If you eat more protein and hit the weights, your body will respond and you will like what you see. I don't think you need to lose any more weight, just maybe some inches (possibly fat).
Health & Support Does anyone know how to get rid of cold sores? I have never had a cold sore in my life until Nov 08 2007

I found this thread a little late, sorry but I thought I would throw my experience in. I have been getting cold sores since I was ten years old. Many things will trigger an outbreak-sun, chapped lips, illness and I even get them sometimes when I get my period. The only way I can control them is with Valtrex and Denivir cream. I take the Valtrex around that time of the month (I try to remember to take it every month) and it seems to keep them away for the most part. If I do happen to get one, I put the Denivir cream on it right away and it stays small and heals quickly. They were really the worst thing, hurt like crazy and I kept getting them over and over. But taking the prescription keeps them under control.

I feel your pain. We spent a couple hundred dollars this summer getting rid of fleas that came when my son brought his dog home. We used Frontline on three dogs and a cat, bombed the house about six times, sprinkled Borax on the carpets, and washed the dogs and bedding with Dawn dish liquid. I had read that this will kill fleas, also if you put a dish of water with a couple drops of Dawn in it, shine a light on the dish and put it in a closed room overnight, the fleas will be attracted to the light, jump in the water and die. I guess you have to repeat this process several times until you don't see anymore fleas. I haven't tried this one though. I'm all for trying low cost solutions to a problem. I also read that vacuuming the carpeting every day is key to getting rid of fleas also because you have to pick up the eggs and larvae before they hatch, maybe put a piece of flea collar in your vac bag or if you have a bagless empty it after you vacuum.

I think the key word here is lean body weight. I thought I read somewhere that you need 1 gram per pound of lean body weight. I'm not sure what your lean body weight is but I did some online calculations for mine to get a rough idea and it came up with 82 lbs lean body weight and 24 pounds of fat. So I shoot for 82 grams a day, sometimes more.

Congratulations on your win! I wish my office would do a contest like that. The ironic thing is I want them to do it for THEM not me because I am almost at my goal (around 2 pounds to go) and I would just like to sit back and cheer everyone on. I love The Biggest Loser show and to do it in real life would be awsome. My place of work is not very health conscious. You can't make people want to be healthy. I think I could have been a great personal trainer, if I would have pursued it as a career. Seeing other people reach their goals is so uplifting!

With my schedule I usually don't eat dinner until around 8:00 pm. I work until 5 pm and jump into my workout routine asap for an hour then make dinner. If my daughter has a basketball game, sometimes we are eating at 8:30 or 9. I have not had a problem losing weight, the later I eat dinner, then I don't want anything else that day. It may not work for everyone.

Hi. The same thing has happened to me. I have lost 22.5 pounds and the only people who say anything are the ones that don't see me that often. I think it is harder to notice when friends and co-workers see you every day. Don't feel bad. You are the one who knows how much you have lost and the progress you have made. That is what matters most-how you feel about yourself.

How old are you?    I am 43
How short are you? I used to be 5' but now the doctor says I am 4'11"
What is your current weight? 107.5
What pant size are you? Depends, anywhere between 2-4
What is your short term goal(s)? Get to goal weight of 105.
What is your long term goal(s)? Build more muscle even if it means gaining some weight especially in my lower body. I'm starting to be less concerned with the numbers and more concerned with building some muscle.

I do this at the grocery store especially when I see mothers and children and the children are overweight. They buy packaged cakes, frozen pizza, candy bars, juice boxes, full fat ice cream, bologna, bacon, I could go on and on. There is not a fruit, vegetable, low fat meat or dairy to be seen. I really want to say something but the way it is now I would probably get my a** kicked for saying anything. I am very fortunate to be educated about nutrition.

I have PB2 and really like it. I think it has a more peanutty flavor but doesn't taste as sweet as regular peanut butter. So I am bad and put in a pinch of sugar! But to save some calories it is worth it.

This thread reminded me of my thoughts last night while watching "Biggest Loser." I love the show for the most part but when the trainers were challenged to eat cupcakes, not one of them would do it. They explained that they were setting a good example for their team. Well, in my opinion if they would eat just one cupcake and resist the rest it would have set a better example. Losing weight and keeping it off is a lifestyle change and I do eat "bad foods" in moderation. I will eat cupcakes! :)
