Very good point gi-jane. Thank you. I was doing so good on my diet and now i'm craving sweets like crazy all of a sudden. =(

When you say "lately" is that for a couple of days or a couple of weeks?  I crave carbs/sweets when I'm ovulating and again the couple of days before the monthlies hit.  I indulge a little because it makes me feel better and when I ignore the cravings I tend to lose it after a couple of days then end up binging on sweets.  Just another angle to think about.

Thanks all, I was pretty sure that I wasn't eating enough.  I'm going to do 15-1600 this week and see how I feel doing that.

Pregnancy & Parenting How do I breastfeed in public? Jul 11 2009

I've nursed 6 of my own and used to be the leader of a breastfeeding support group (LLL).  The best tip I ever learned and used with most of my babies is to shield the babies face/your breast with your hand.  Start now while baby is tiny and they will always let you do it.

Take the hand of the arm that is not holding baby's head and hook your thumb under your top (so that you can pull the shirt down quickly if baby pops off) and splay your fingers out over your breast and lightly touch baby's cheek.  Obviously with a tiny baby that arm will be basically wrapped around the baby first for support (under their bum/back).  As they get older you can rest them on your lap and have the arm completely free.  Practice at home until you get the hang of it, as it becomes natural you will always have a discreet way to nurse your baby anywhere.  Your hand is there sheilding any but the most attentive peeker from seeing the nipple when baby is latching, its sheilding baby and breast from view of casual onlookers and you are ready to pop your shirt down quickly if baby pops off unexpectedly.

1.  Six children

2.  Failure of a business (stress followed by depression)

3.  Lack of funds while recovering from failure (cheap fattening foods and very little high quality protien and almost no fresh produce)

4.  Baby #6 born when I was 42...ya just don't bounce back the way ya used to

I am 35 pounds overweight which puts me at 10 over where I was when I got pg with the peanut born (01/07) but I was in the process of losing the 25 pounds I gained when our business failed.  Working hard to once again wear a size 4.

Pregnancy & Parenting Calories burned pushing a stroller? Jul 31 2008

I agree that it seems to assume you are going slower and not working as hard when pushing a stroller.  I googled it and one site explained how to calculate it more accurately based on the level you work at.  I know I'm breathing harder and sweating more when pushing the stroller than when I walk without it.  I just log it as regular moderate walking.

Arrrgggg just venting!!! I haven't made it to the Y since Thursday.  I have been walking and bike riding with the kiddos, but I miss my routine.  Barring any unforseen issues, I should be back on track tomorrow.  I am nervous about weighing myself as my calorie count has been high yesterday and today....closer to 2100 than 1800.  Grrrrr...what is it about missing exercise that makes us prone to munching?  Another hurdle to overcome...but I WILL do it.

"wow 6 babies u r truly a supermom!! U r even in extended breastfeeding, wow u r amazing! U have dropped alot already so it is going to take time- im sure your metab has slowed but keep up the counting bc it does truly work.

how many cals are u eating currently?  Are u exercising?

and congrats also on your 23 yr marriage that is fantastic!"

Thanks.  My kids are wonderful and if the body and the finances would have permitted we'd probably have a couple of more. LOL

Right now I am eating 1,800-2,000 calories per day depending on how much exercise I get per day.  That level of eating will net me a 300-700 calorie defcit per day.  On really active day, like when we go on bike rides in addition to my daily work out or when we go swimming etc I can eat as much as 2,500.  Being a stay-at-home Mom gives me a huge advantage in the activity department.  Just keeping after the little one and the 6yo keep me pretty active.  I also find that if I have more than a 700 cal deficit on any given day, the next day I'm hungry alllllll day.  So, when I sit down to nurse the baby so sleep, I check my daily totals and see where I'm at.  If the deficit is too high I have a nutritious bedtime snack.

With the right man, 23 years goes by in a flash!  It seems like just yesterday we were married.

Hang in there, you can do this!  You know that the us can be off by as much as 1.5 pounds, so your "big" baby may end up being 8 pounds.  And just to reassure you that it can be done, I am 5'1" and 115 pounds (at my normal weight) and gave birth to a 9pound 7 ounce baby completely without any meds of any sort.  I was attended by a lay midwife and gave birth at home.  He wasn't even my longest labor.

Hi all.  Glad to have found this group of calorie counters.  I am nursing my 6th child and at 44yo I found that for the first time the weight is not budging and I am watching my calories carefully.  My nursling is 18 months old and still nursing a LOT.  My stats:

5'1" currently at 141 down from a high of 177 the week before baby was born.

Goal weight 115 then decide if I want to try for another 10

Dh and I will celebrate 23 years of marriage on July 26 and we have 6 children

dd 22 and just married in May

ds 20yo (in Aug)

dd 16yo (in June)

ds 13.5yo

ds 6.5yo

dd 18 months

I just started counting calories at the begining of July when I realized that the weight was just not coming off like it had done with the other kids.  Your metabolism really does slow down when you are older.  *Sigh*

I love it with 1 tsblespoon if pure maple syrup and 1 tablespoon of finely chopped walnuts.

Another favorite is with butter and brown sugar.  Make the oatmeal slightly drier than normal and serve on a plate with about 1.5 teaspoons of butter and a generous sprinkling of brown sugar.

Happy Monday all!  I had a great and busy weekend working around the house and yard.  Weighed in at the "Y" today and am down 2.5 pounds to 141.5!  Yeah...after 2 weeks of no movement.  Of course it helps that my period was the end of last week/weekend.

This weeks goals:

Make it to the "Y" 5 days in a row.

Break 140 lbs.

Welcome to the newcomers and am looking forward to getting to know you.

Weighed in midafternoon for the week.  Still at 144 :( But I added weight training to my routine this week AND way overate on the weekend so I'm not too disappointed (and frankly glad it didn't move in the wrong direction).  Now, if the scale doesn't budge next week, I'll start feeling aggraveted.

My goals this week are to hit the YMCA 5 mornings this week alternating weights and cardio (I did weights today).  To figure out my calories and stick with counting the calories.  I'm having trouble with what to put the the activity level plus I'm still nursing my youngest so I'm just not sure how many calories are used by that.  I'll be doing some research on kelleymom and LLL this week to try and figure that out.

How's everyone else doing?

We usually take fruit (apples, oranges, grapes, and bananas travel well), reduced fat Triscuits, and trail mix (1 cup each corn chex, rice chex, and plain cheerios, 1 cup peanuts, 1 cup raisins, 1 cup pretzles, and 1 cup mm's or chocolate chips).  If I'm making it just for me I will reduce the chocolate to about 1/4 but I like a bit of sweet in there.  Sometimes I will also use honey nut cheerios instead of regular and leave out the chocolate.

Did you actually read it all????

LOL...I did!!  I was avoiding going outside in the heat of the day and dh was off at his Air Force Reserve weekend and the older kids were parked in front of the playstation.

I did get out in the evening and get all my weeding and mulching done.  Gotta go today and get another load of mulch to finish up.

Hi,  count me in!  I am back to exercising and calorie counting after a too busy spring combined with a frequently ill little one and a rebound of 6 pounds.  My stats

Married 23 years (on July 26th) with 6 children.  22yo, almost 20yo, 16yo, 13yo, 6yo, and the little one who will be 18mos on the 20th of July.

Me:

44yo

5'1"

143 pounds (was losing before pg and was at 139 then was at 177 the week she was born)

Goal:  110 (more than when I got married, but way less than I am now)

I am trying to get to the YMCA 4-6 times per week alternating between aerobic conditioning and weight training.

I'm glad I found this thread and am going back to read it all.

Trash it!!  That's what I did on the 2nd with anything left over from the holiday feasting.  Out went cookies, chocolate, candy canes, fudge, 1/2 a cheese ball, and I think that was it.  Even dh didn't gripe for once as he had lost 15 pounds in the fall and gained at least 5 back over Christmas.  The kids don't need all that junk anyway!
