Motivation 21-day sugar challenge Oct 26 2008

Sorry guys. I should have been more specific.

Here are some guidelines:

1. Definitely do not cut out fruit. If anything has natural sugar, it's healthy. I have found that fruit is very helpful when cutting way back on refined sugar. That way, we can still enjoy a sweet taste, without the health costs. I have been eating a lot of apples lately.

Also, there is something about picking the fruit yourself that makes you more likely to eat it than if you had purchased it at the grocery store. If you have any nearby farms, I would recommend going apple-picking (they're in season!)

2. About the yogurt... yogurt is healthy and the calcium is especially important for us, as women. Just be careful of the type of yogurt. Some of them are made using high fructose corn syrup or other refined, processed sugars. Try to replace those with ones that use natural sugars or "evaporated cane juice". Stonyfield farm has some great yogurts with natural sugars.

Another yogurt option is to add honey and/or fresh fruit to plain yogurt, as the sugar in honey and fresh fruit is natural.

3. Instead of looking at the specific number of grams of sugar, I'm looking at the ingredient labels. If anything has high fructose corn syrup, it is out of the question. Anything with natural sugar is fine.

4. Just because we are cutting back on sugar does not mean that we can never have another cookie or brownie again in out lives. Even during the 21 day challenge, I am allowing myself two sweets a day. I'm just making sure these are small tastes. For example, instead of having four cookies, I had a half a cookie today. That way, I don't feel deprived (especially with Halloween only a week a way).

Another option is to make baked goods using pure cane sugar or natural applesauce as a substitute for refined sugar.

5. A word about sugar substitutes... I would not recommend using sugar substitutes. This really comes down to personal choice and preference, but I have found that artificial sugar just makes me really hungry and makes me crave the real deal. Artificial sugar is a bit of a controversial topic. Some say it are perfectly fine. Others say it stunts growth and has other health ramifications. If you really want to feel the benefits of de-sugaring, I would highly recommend removing these from your diet, but its really up to you.

I hope this helped clear things up a bit. If there are any more questions, just let me know. Smile

Hey everyone! How are you all doing? I think I am going to try mini-meals and just eating whenever I am hungry. I tried three meals a day and no snacks. That worked for a while until one day, when I hadn't eaten for 8.5 hours, I decided that it wasn't going to work. We'll see how this goes!

Finally, we have started getting along again. Still, we have kind of a touchy relationship and we can argue over just about anything.

Bobo1, how was your walk? Thank you sooo much for getting me off the computer. I ended up going to school, and Pgeorgian, you were right, going to school did end up making me feel much better. Also, I am in PMS right now. Does that mean that these depressed symptoms are just normal for "that time of the month"?

Thanks Bobo1. The walk sounds like a good idea. I still feel guilty that I am not going to school. I have not complete a full week of school in almost two months now. I'm starting to feel sick now from not eating. I hate this feeling and I want it to go away! (sorry for the rant). ...I'm definitely going for a walk soon.

I have never been heavily overweight or overweight at all actually but I totally get what you are saying. I get really embarrassed and offended whenever someone asks me what I am eating. Is this normal? I don't know, but it is good to know that I'm not the only one who feels this way. Maybe everyone feels this way and people just don't like to admit it... Just a thought.

Thank you all for your advice.

Hooligan, I really liked your advice. It made a lot of sense to me so sometime this weekend I am going to try to talk to him rationally and objectively.

Today, he still has not said a word to me. I don't know what his deal is. Hopefully, later, things will loosen up a little. Right now, there seems to be a lot of tension between us. I can't wait to just talk to him and get this over with because the whole situation with him is really stressing me out. Maybe I'll go for a run to blow off some steam.

Diane, I really appreciate your advice. Your post perked me up a little. The only problem is that I can't seen to let it go. It makes me really angry and it kind of bothers me down that I have such an immature and un-supportive dad (which is totally true, you nailed his personality) :)

Thank you so much for the advice guys!

Jenmcc, I am actually in 10th grade this year, but this is my first year in the high school because of the way my district is set up. Maybe things will even out by next year though? (I hope so anyway!)

Ricen, I found your post very reassuring and confidence-boosting, so thank you!

For the past couple days, I have just tried to remain open-minded and I have also stopped judging people so much based on what I may have heard about them from other people. I am pretty sure I have passed up many potential friends simply because of rumors and judgments.

Healthnut, I was in the exact same situation about 10 months ago. I had anorexia for about 7 months and once I began to recover my hair started falling out like crazy. It fell for about 3-4 months and then I started getting those little baby hairs growing back. They are actually kind of annoying because when I put my hair up, they used to stick out sideways but now that they have grown a little longer they make some nice sweeping bangs. By the way, congrats on your recovery!

Chop_chop, will the injection actually make my nose bigger in the long run when all the stuff deflates in a year or so or does the stuff just dissolve?

Pgeorgian, I think you might actually be right. I hadn't thought of it before, but I probably will find something else to be dissatisfied with even if I do get a new nose. I always have been obsessed with perfection (the whole must-be-skinny and in good shape and get straight As and good at everything kind of person). That's kind of getting me into trouble now because my obsession is making me mildly depressed and unusually irritable. So you have certainly brought up a valid point here. Thank you for helping me to realize this because I probably would not have seen it myself because it just seemed normal to me to always be working to make something better.

Sunkissedbliss, lol. I didn't mean that I am going to change everything about myself. I just meant that I hate that my nose is making me sooo ugly which I would certainly not be if I could just get rid of my nose.

Thank you guys for your posts/ advice/ concerns. In answer to the question of why I want to have a nose job... it makes me feel very self-conscious because there is a big bump on the bridge of my nose. I want one of those small, nicely-shaped, sloping noses. Right now, it looks like someone glued a big lump of clay on top of it. Also, a girl I used to know told me I was big-nosed. That made me feel awful. Additionally, its such a shame that my nose is so big because I would be so pretty without it. If I lose 12 lbs, get a nose job and grow just a few inches taller, I could be a model (which I would love to do because I am really into style/ fashion) and I'm sure I would have an easier time of getting guys. So I have a few reasons. I am going to start researching now and see what I come up with.

Nocturne, thank you for your response. I'm not sure whether that's true though because a girl in one of my classes got a nose job last summer and she was only 15 at the time. Also, I'll be 16 in about two months and I really don't think my nose can get any larger.

15 years old 5' 3" 118 lbs. I eat about 1700-2200 per day (more on weekends, less during the week). This is a good amount because I have so much energy (especially because I eat natural, healthy foods. About 6 months ago, I officially recovered from anorexia. During my eating disorder, I ate VERY little (I am not going to post my former calorie intake because that might be a trigger for any other former and potentially future anorexics (especially with all of these other posts I am seeing on here). I can honestly tell you that when I was anorexic, I felt cold, weak, and tired all the time. I completely lost my interest in sex, romance, fun, and friendship. Now I feel more comfortable, and I am a wonderful, fun and energetic person!

Enzyme1, you should do whatever works for you but I think fruit has actually helped me a lot in losing weight (especially apples).

I have not blogged in a while but love this challenge! I feel soooo great and I have about eight times more energy! I love it! I have also been eating less meat for some reason (and no steak at all) simply because I do not like it. I have been eating so much produce.

Tonight, however, I went out to dinner with my family and ordered a steak wrap. I ate it because I was super-hungry, but it was so gross (I'm talking dripping with oil and loaded with steak (which I don't even like)). After dinner, we baked chocolate chip cookies and we made the really small kind which kind of makes it feel okay to eat like 12 of them, which is exactly what I did (no exaggeration). Now I feel bloated, fat and pretty much like CRAP. Hopefully this experience has taught me to realize the awful effects of overly processed foods and refined sugar. I think I'm better off just avoiding all processed foods altogether. I am completely serious about this. I now have absolutely NO ENERGY and I feel depressed. I felt about 10 times better than this when I had my period! I also didn't exercise, which just adds to the mix!

Sorry for the rant, but I think that this story of my life for the past three weeks or so really stresses the importance of healthy habits.

My liver is cursing me right now. I can feel it.

I am totally in. I think that I am just going to start on January 2nd though because I am going to so many holiday parties and there will be so much food and excitement and baking of delicious cookies and brownies. If I try to start this week I will just frustrate myself.

I have actually already started eating this way about three weeks ago and I have only binged once which was today because there were so many baked goods. It feels so great! I actually was not used to all the sugar and I got a stomach ache and a headache after eating all those baked goods stuff and I really didn't even have that much.

Revolution3, about the weight gain... last year when I was recovering from anorexia, I gained all the weight binging on sweets and that turned into a binge eating disorder and put me in an even worse situation. I would try switching to full-fat products of items that you already eat instead of "light" or low-calorie" or "low-fat" foods. Good luck!
