| I second kitty- they are much, much better grilled or pan "fried" than they are in the microwave. I actually like them on the dry side since it makes it taste more solid and hearty. I normally cook them in a non-stick pan until both sides are crunchy. Play around with them and see what you like. I also sometimes crumble them up once they are almost done cooking and throw in either an egg or some egg beaters to make a super protein meal. | |||

| BUY THE GLASSES ONLINE!!! Sorry for the emphasis, but I feel like I have to tell everyone about this. I have a rather strong prescription and an astigmatism in one eye. When I bought my glasses in traditional places, even discount places, it was always around $300. Now I normally buy them at a place called Zenni Optical, www.zennioptical.com, and it is less than fifty dollars for the nice frames and even less for perfectly great frames with prescription lenses (I last bought a pair for a total of $21 and get compliments all the time). The best way to buy online is to look at the measurements of glasses that you have and that look good on you. I have a wide face so the narrower and taller styles do not look good on me. I went to a Walmart and wrote down the dimensions on ones that looked good on me. You could also try on reading glasses at a drug store to see what dimensions look good. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask since I am really a huge fan of this immense cost saving route. |

| Because of the high fiber content they don't taste like taqueria tortillas, but they are really good on their own right. I double-checked, and they don't contain HFCS. They actually have almost no sugar in them at all. That is part of their "healthy carb" sales pitch. | |||

Huh, I got less than 200 Cal when I put it in. It accepted all of the ingredients aside for Splenda, which is negligible anyway. (btw, sorry for the formatting- I am unsure how to change it since I cut and paste)

| Is there still Dollar a Pound and the Garment District (it is dollar/lb downstairs and then nicer used things individually priced upstairs)? I remember rummaging through huge heaps of used clothes that were literally in piles on the floor. It was a misnomer though because they had raised the prices, but still a great place. I found some stuff there I still have. I don't remember exactly where it was, but it was near the Braintree T stop. | |||
| Foods | Protein or other bars... | May 18 2008 02:49 (UTC) |

| In regards to finding them....I try bars mostly when I find coupons for them. I eat a lot of the cereal Kashi GoLean! and for about three months every box had a $1 off a Kashi bar coupon. I had literally dozens of these and the bars are like $1.25. I wanted specific flavours and found that the selection is very different between stores. Target, Trader Joe's and Safeway (generic west coast grocery store) all had different types and flavors. I would look around at all the places. Target and Trader Joe's were the cheapest of all places I have seen (sports stores, corner stores, etc...). | |||

| I have a question for pill users- I use the ring and only dabbled in the mini pills once (I have a history of migraines and didn't want the higher levels of estrogen) but am super worried about getting pregnant (in a committed relationship and totally double dutch) and just become too anxious worrying about missing a pill. Have people found pills to be better than the ring, for any reason?
Most of my friends either don't use chemical birth control or don't use the pill. Admittedly this is partly due to my pushing the ring, but I am curious to see if people have tried both and preferred the pill. |

| Lamp is totally on point. The Kashi Rolls are very yummy but very difficult to chew. It definitely takes some jaw muscle to work your way through. Be sure to get the Rolls or the Chewy labeled ones, with rolls being the biggest chew (think Charleston Chew level of chew). The other Kashi bars are not that difficult to eat. I agree that Clif bars (as well as Luna, Lara, Zone, Atkins, or really any other bar I can think of) are not that chewy. | |||
| Foods | Trader Joe's Baba Gannouj and Eggplant Hummus: Difference? | May 12 2008 08:29 (UTC) |
4 |
| The difference is that baba ghannouj has eggplants and tahini and eggplant hummus has chickpeas, eggplant and tahini. Both may contain additional seasonings (such as garlic) but are very similar in ingredients. The first is much more powerfully eggplant-y, while the latter is more subtle.
I actually prefer the hummus flavours that are in the quartet to the baba ghannouj, but it is definitely a personal preference. My favourite of all Trader Joe's hummus flavours is the tomato basil. It doesn't taste strongly of tomatoes, but it also doesn't taste like traditional hummus. The containers don't have that many servings and are reasonably priced. If it is something you like eat regularly, I tried buy a few tubs and try it out. Also, if you are so inclined, Trader Joe's sells tahini and so you could make your own hummus/dips and experiment with other flavours as well. |

| I eat pretty much the same things every day, but in no particular order or time (meaning there are no "breakfast" foods): Cereal- Kashi GoLean! Regular, Mighty Bites, Shredded Spoonfuls, generic All Bran Dairy- 1% cottage cheese, plain non fat yogurt, greek yogurt, occasionally parmesan cheese on my hummus sandwiches Bread-like- Oroweat Double Fiber, La Tortilla Factory wraps, wild rice Fruit- apples (especially pink lady, fuji, granny smith-almost always with almond or sunflower butter), bananas, frozen berries Veggies (by common def, not botanical)- cucumbers, cauliflower, green beans (often use in place of pasta with homemade tomato based sauce, at least twice a week), carrots, broccoli, asparagus, sweet potatoes Fish- lots and lots of frozen salmon, snapper, shrimp, and a frozen seafood mix For example for today I had: Meal: A serving of homemade sauce (extra lean ground beef, crushed tomatoes, basil, garlic and onions with seasonings) with a .25c of cottage cheese. Snack: Pink lady with 1 Tbsp. of raw almond butter Snack: 1/2c of yoghurt with 1c of All bran Meal: Roast chicken with broccoli Meal: Almond butter sandwich with Oroweat double fiber bread Meal:yoghurt with Mighty Bites and Kashi GoLean! Snack: 1Tbsp of almond butter Normally I eat many more veggies, but I was out and about and went for the more starchy foods today and therefore was low on fats and went for more almonds. For dinner I normally have green beans and carrots with a piece of fish (I like the fish juices mixed with the veggies, both covered in black pepper) |

| I live in San francisco and I've seen them in the larger safeways in the "healthy foods" frozen section. I haven't tried them though since they are so pricey and the ones from zen bakery are much cheaper and tasty (those are sold at trader joe's). Probably whole foods has them, but I haven't looked there. | |||

| They only are able to not count insoluable fiber. This is because this type of carb is not able to be digested at all my the body (ie they pass all the way through, why people who eat high fiber diets have better bowel movements).
In the US, commercial products can only not count the fiber grams that are for all intents and purposes calorie-free. There is no way for the body to break down these materials and cannot get energy for it. Different carb types have different calorie counts because of the body's ability to break them down. Sugar alcohols for example have less than 4 calories per gram because they are structured differently and are not digested the same way as sugar. This is reflected in the total calorie count. |

| I have had it since childhood, on my upper arms, thighs and face. While it has certainly not cleared up, my face is noticely less intensely red. However, I don't know if that is due to getting older or losing weight. I have never had much luck with the prescription lotions and such. I exfloliate several times a week and always use a thick lotion mixed with oil immediately out of the shower and let it soak in before dressing. I didn't know losing weight was supposed to help. | For everyday items, I find Trader Joe's to be significantly cheaper than Whole Foods. Both places have their own little niches (certain frozen/fresh foods only available there), but for things like fruit, veggies, milk and eggs, TJ's is much cheaper for me (I live in San Francisco) and is equal in quality. | |||

| I would definitely go for the pro. Both are infidelity, but I think I'd feel the same way if I was cheated with a prostitute as I would if it was with someone of the other gender. It is something I cannot give (I am not thrillingly illegal and I don't have testicles). I would be able to make it more an issue of my boyfriend's than something with me or our relationship. | |||
| Foods | Kashi Go Lean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | Apr 02 2008 04:34 (UTC) |

| Glad to hear that oomboo2 :)
deflepfan16: If it is made specifically for American consumers, they normally subtract the calories in the fiber. Sometimes not though. In the case of the Kashi GoLean, the 140 is more accurate. If you are really curious, you can estimate calories based on calories/gram. For example-> 4gram of carbs equals about 16 calories. However since measurements are rounded and averaged in the US, this is only an estimate. Also, some people don't subtract fiber calories (especially soluable fiber) just to feel secure. To be honest, packaging has come a long way, but it isn't always 100% truthful/accurate. The longer a product has been around, the more likely it is accurate. Hope this helps!! |

| Foods | Kashi Go Lean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | Apr 02 2008 01:29 (UTC) |

| If it is insoluable fiber then your body would not be able to use those 500g and would think it was starving since it gets no energy from fiber. That type of fiber is sometimes called nature's broom because it stays whole in the GI tract and can help add bulk to your BMs. If all you ate was insoluable fiber, you would get severe GI trouble and your body would be starved of nutrients and calories. It simply cannot use them for energy.
Soluable fiber is a different type. Both are plant materials, but soluable fiber does provide a limited amount of energy (ie calories); from everything I have read the body is not allow to get the full 4cal/g from soluable but it does get some. Both types of fiber are necessary to maintain healthy GI functioning and it is the soluable type of fiber that makes oatmeal a cholesterol lower-er. Fiber, especially from food, helps increase the feeling of fullness while simutaneously making the body work a little harder to digest it. It is a really helpful in losing weight and maintaining a healthy body. The calories not shown reflect the true number your body can absorb. Since it is optional to count these, some companies do and some companies don't. Even CC has a non set policy regarding foods and whether they will count fiber or not. |

| I wanted to second (or maybe fourth or fifth at this point) those who thanked you for posting this. The original intent I believe to remind everyone that there are different levels of what is realistically attainable and that each of us has to set our own goals and decide what is good for us. I have definitely fallen into the trap of feeling unworthy because my time and efforts have not netted the results I assumed would come with following the rules. It is a really good reminder that there are all types of fitness goals and bodies and that you aren't giving up or undisciplined because you might not be at that level.
Thanks spirochete! (is it dirty to call you that?? I can only think of syphilis and Lyme disease, but I will assume you are of a pro-biotic variety that I don't know about) |

| Fitness | How much excercise? | Mar 09 2008 00:27 (UTC) |

| The intensity and duration of your workout is really up to you. For most beginners, starting a daily exercise habit can seem overwhelming. However you said you have been active daily for awhile so maybe you would do well and enjoy it. Listen to your body. It should feel like you are pushing yourself, not breaking yourself. Maybe your nutritionist who seems to be spurring this on can help you determine what is right since s/he knows more about your health situation. Read this forum for ideas if you find that walking and jogging is getting boring, or if you are ready to try weight training. It sounds like you are having a really good, reasonable start. Best of luck to you! | |||
| Foods | What should I buy at Trader Joes? | Mar 06 2008 04:40 (UTC) |

| The ones I have been to (CA and OH) have both had these delicious high fiber cakes. The ones in California are much better (made by Zen bakery). Also, their cereal selection is terrific: cheap Kashi cereals, whole grains galore, steel cut oats at a really cheap price. If you eat yogurt, eggs, or milk/silk substitute their prices are better than Safeway. I prefer almond milk and get it there cheaper and sometimes splurge and get the refrigerated soymilk.
In the freezer section, there are several terrific veggie finds. The black beans enchilada, the eggplant Parmesan in the single serving (only 140 calories and has cheese!!) and the fake meat corndogs are terrific. In the fridge section, in addition to cheap staples like cottage cheese and yogurt (much cheaper greek yogurt than safeway), they have veggie sandwich slices which are an acquired taste, but good if you like things like seitan. |

| Weight Loss | What is wrong with me??? | Mar 04 2008 20:16 (UTC) |

| I'n guessing that as you have lost weight your natural body shape is showing. I am the same height as you and though a little lighter, I definitely gain first and lose last in my lower abdomen area- typical apple shape. Unfortunately it is a more a matter of genetics more than hard work.
One of the things I did when I was more hard core (I've slacked recently on weights) was try to build up my upper body and legs through heavy lifting. It gives you a more well rounded figure overall. My legs have always been pretty well developed and when I worke on my arms, my figure looked better, plus I noticed a general reduction in body fat that included my stomach. I am not sure if you are doing any weights, but that is really the only thing that made a difference for me and my muffin top. I have slacked off since I really dislike weight training and it has returned, despite not really gaining weight. If you are looking for weight ideas, try the fitness section as they are really helpful. Good luck! |

| Fitness | Athletes blood pressure and resting heart rate, what are your numbers? | Feb 12 2008 03:38 (UTC) |
26 |
| I don't know if the term athlete applies since I don't really follow a sport, but I work out very regularly. Last time I donated blood I had a resting rate of 60 bpm. My blood pressure was 100/56. The place I donate also tells you your total cholesterol (no breakdown though)- 158.
I completely agree with the previous posters and that your blood pressure can be affected by a lot of factors. Repeated checking over a period of time is a much more accurate. A lot of pharmacies have a blood pressure machine, good place to check for free. |

| Weight Loss | 5'6 135-anybody out there? | Jan 30 2008 05:12 (UTC) |

| It really depends on your shape, muscle tone and general build as to what size you will wear. I fluctuate between 133-136 (I drink a very high amount of water and frequently retain water so my weight is very dynamic). I am apple shaped and have relatively lean limbs, small chest and bum and a nice amount of fat in my abdomen. Last time I had my body fat tested it was 20% and is probably higher now (I was under 130 then- about three months ago).
I wear between a size four and six and a small in normal shops and a medium in shops for hussies. The nice pair of jeans I have are a 28. |

| Health & Support | painkillers and laxatives | Jan 30 2008 04:34 (UTC) |

| I agree with Claire on the recommendation of senna. It isn't a stimulant laxative so it doesn't actually change the way your GI tract moves but instead allows more water to remain in your stool so it is easier to pass. The Smooth Move is pretty good and there is even a chocolate flavour (it is actually good tasting enough that I wish it was a regular tea so I could regularly drink it).
I have found low cost senna tea being sold as "dieter's tea." If you do this, or really any of the methods listed above, be sure to drink lots of fluids. Fluids really help any bowel moving agent work better. |
