| 1. not trying to lose weight, trying to maintain 2. i follow the canadian food guide 3. i knoow i need to eat in moderation- my point was this: i get all the required food stuff but its not enough calories. currently, to get enough calories i eat all required stuff plus carbs- i assumed it would be better to eat something else, but as u said before, the grains i had thought i should get was actually on the low side so i guess a little more would be fine. i always get around 100% daily calcium so im fine with dairy. 4. 1600 is the minimum, 1800 the max- im small and despite the fact that i exercise a lot, my metabolism seems to be really slow. 1600 is a healthy amount and its kept me well so far, so why not? |

| ok nice to know about the grains thing agruskin... cuz even b4 i counted the calories from all the things im sposed to eat, i would get the feeling at the end of the day that i didnt get enough cals and id eat stuff like cereal and pretzels... i just thot that was a bad thing. so its good to know its not and i dont get ur question- "are you prepared to eat like that your whole life?" whats wrong with how i eat? its healthy and yummy! my question was only about which food group is best to increase after getting the basics from each cuz the basics alone dont add up to enough calories to maintain my weight |

| sour/half sour pickles are 0 calories... i also take plain yogurt (80 cal) and mix it with coffee sweetened with stevia and put it in popsicle molds... each pop takes forever to eat and is only 40 cal basically freezing anything is good cuz it just takes much longer to eat i have this soy sauce that's 10 calories for a tbsp. and a tbsp goes rllly far- just one flavors half a cup of veggies. so basically, take any low cal veggies (spinach, broccoli, carrots, peppers, zucchini....), cook ( i cook it in the microwave by chopping em up and putting em in a bowl of water, then microwaving for abt 5-7 min, depending on the veggie), and put soy sauce on... realllllly yummmy |

| ABSOLUTELY! i bake all the time and i recently got a handle on it... i used to take licks of the batter every 2 minutes... and lick the bowl... and the spoons... and eat a cookie/ scrape the cake pan afterwards... i literally would eat at least 800 calories every time!! so unhealthy! and i would really be on a sugar highh after soo i started not eating ANY while i bake- its much easier to have nothing than to say ull have a small bite and stop. what i do is i take of a spoonful of batter and put it in a bowl. then, after all the rest of the batter is in the oven and all bowls, spoons and mixers are in the sink and water has been run over them, i can enjoy the spoonful and don't have to worry about being tempted to go back for more. |

| yeh i used to have a friend like that when i was in elementary school... thankfully she moved to a different state so there were no ugly confrontations or anything. it was weird cuz i knew i shouldn't let someone insult me like that but every time she would say sorry i would just think... welllll i like being friends with her, maybe itl be different next time... she would do the same thing to me- i was rather chubby at the time and she would call me fat and stuff and i tried to joke back but she would just keep repeating the same insult and eventually id show that i was upset. "OMG IM JUST KIDDING!" yeh...right AND, most annoying thing of all- she had the audacity to get INSULTED when i would joke around with other people! she would say, why is it that when i say things to u u get upset but when other friends say things to u u just laugh about it? and i just couldn't get it into her head that THEY were saying things that i KNEW they didn't believe were true because if they thought something was really wrong with me they wouldn't bring it up! cuz that's what a normal sensitive person does! anyways, good luck... easier than getting rid of them right away iis to just make other friends and let the old ones slip away... good friends are important so try to find some |

| Health & Support | Weight Gained!?! :( | Jul 06 2008 06:36 (UTC) |

| dont give up!! first of all, the weight u gained may have just been water weight, which can change all the time, especially as the day progresses (so if you weighed urself in the morning, ud be a good several pounds less than at night). also, after 3 weeks of working out, you must have gained some muscle and muscle weighs more than fat. so while it might look on the scale like ur weight increased, u actually may have lost fat. second of all, the beginning of a diet is ALWAYS the hardest part. u keep talking about the foods u love- ill tell u that before i started eating all natural, i loved all kinds of terrible processed foods. after less than a month of giving all that stuff up, i had NO desire to eat it anymore. not just that- before, i would have snacked on cookies/chips/pretzels... and probably would have had a fruit at some point just because i knew i should- i would eat it quickly and hardly enjoy it at all. now that i eat cookies, chips, and pretzels MUCH more rarely and selectively, i LOOOOVE fruit! its heavenly! i sit there and eat it slowly, savoring every bite the way i used to eat an ice cream cone! my point is, stop thinking about how hard it will be! the best thing to do is to force urself for a few weeks to eat ONLY foods in ur diet plan, none of that "bad stuff you love." after a few weeks, you'll find you love healthier foods! and then, u can start having a little bit of the old food you loved on special occasions b/c you wont crave it so much that you'll overeat. also, if the scale depresses u so much, stop getting on it! stop dieting for the sole purpose of losing weight- if u keep thinking you'll never lose weight, just diet for the purpose of becoming healthy! and if you stick to ur diet... well, inevitably, u WILL lose weight. stick to it... even if it takes longer than u wanted it to, you have to start somewhere! if you dont start now, in a year you'll be beating urself up that if you'd have only started a year ago you'd already be at your goal weight... dont think about how long it will take, or how hard it will be. just take every day in stride. do this for your health and happiness! and good lucckk |

| 1) how often?- once or twice a week 2)how'd i learn?- i learned to bake from my mother i guess... she never explicitly showed me but i had baked with her when i was a little kid (im 16 btw) 3)first thing i ever baked?- probably chocolate chip cookies 4)last thing i baked- pumpkiin pie 5)favorite thing to bake?- probably brownies cuz they dont require frosting and cookies are always annoying cuz u have to spoon em out individually and bake in shifts 6)worst thing i ever baked?- berry souffle (my first time with a souffle and i didnt rlly know what i was doing) 7) favorite thing to add to baking- chocolate chips. every baking problem can be solved with chocolate chips (dark chocolate of course) 8)anyone else in ur house bake?- my mom used to til i took over. i loooove to bake and she certainly doesn't mind not doing it 9)started to bake lighter/healthier since joiining cc?- nah... i started b4 10) fave way to make recipe healthier/lighter- replace white flour with 3/4 whole grain, 1/4 white.... replace oil with applesauce... replace 1/2 of the chocolate chips with raisins/craisins 11) i LOVE to bake!!! i dunno why... i used to love to eat the batter lol but id end up eating so much! i didnt used to realize at teh time but thinking back i probably ate like 1000 calories while i baked! it wasnt a weight issue cuz im thin and would be good otherwise but it was terribly unhealthy... now i try not to eat it at all while i bake- if im really tempted ill take off a spoonful and not eat it until all the rest of the batter is in the oven or sink- but i still love baking... i guess i just have a strange obsession with feeding people 12) where do u store baked goods after baking?- depends what i baked for... if im serving it the next day/that day, ill wrap it in silver foil (cookies i put on a plate and in a ziplock) and leave it on the counter. otherwise, i do the same and put it in the deep freeze. 13) do others think you bake well?- yuppp 14) where do u find recipes?- cookbooks, allrecipes.com 15)never baked b4 but would like to?- baked alaska |

| well... it sounds like its ur bf who's making u "crazy"- if he really loved and respected you, he would support you in ur recovery and accept your decision to not wear a bathing suit tonight... its not that big of a deal for him to come to terms with that! and he certainly wouldn't be yelling at u and calling u names while u cry and pour out ur feelings on a website about the very person who should be the one listening to those feelings... i think what im suggesting herre is that you should break up and let him know why |

| muscle weighs more than fat you probably just gained some muscle- thats all. but with your extra muscle, ur body burns more calories and overall ur body just looks better. plus, if you gained muscle u certainly lost fat because the way muscles are built up is that u tear them (by pushing them til they hurt) and then they are patched up by body fat. so dont b depressed! b happy! |

| Fitness | calories burned swimming? | Jul 02 2008 02:44 (UTC) |
3 |
| thanks! and while were on the topic of calorie burning (as if there's a post on this forum thats not), how much would you say i'd burn for 1/2 hr of stationary biking? (recumbent bike) cuz i checked on the activity selector and it didnt make sense- i do a consistent 20-22 mph & 115 watt but the activity thing called 115 "light" and >20 mph "very fast, racing"- maybe its dif cuz im using a recumbent? either way, neone have a more accurate count? (also taking into account that im 103)... basically the whole reason for my original post was cuz i exercise 5 days a week intense, 1 day moderately and now that im swimming cuz its the summer, i dont want to burn too many more calories than on a normal day. so if someone could tell me how much 1/2 hr of biking burns compared to the amount i said i swim, would be appreciated |

| coppertop_4- u can buy really good herbal coffee- there's no actual coffee in it but its made to taste like coffee and i believe it's healthier (since its all herbs and a bit of grains). it has much less of a bitter taste than coffee so you can drink it with less sweetener and/or milk/cream. they come in all dif flavors, like vanilla nut, mocha.... dunno if it gives as much of a buzz as coffee gives u but u shud try it! |

| Health & Support | boycott the media | Jul 01 2008 03:56 (UTC) |

| ok a lot of comments... a) everyone who's saying that the media only reflects what the public wants- yes i know. i didnt say rise up against the media with pitchforks, i said boycott- as in show them that we don't WANT to look at pics of only stick-thin models- we want some other body types too! b)ok i guess i was a bit overdramatic, but i still stand by my point about the media's influence- EDs have hugely increased in number over the last 50 years and it's no coincidence that the media has been showing skinnier and skinnier models and actresses too! think about it- if you didn't look at any form of media (and didn't know ppl with EDs), what would possess u to try desperately to attain a specific body shape & weight? why would u arbitrarily just choose an extremely low body weight unless SOMEONE was telling you that that's whats pretty? and c)(this is for odie03, but id appreciate anyone's answer)- im just curious- i work out plenty (3 times a week intense biking for 1/2 hr, once a week karate for 1 hr, once a week walking 4.5 mph for 45 min, once a week leisurely walking for a couple hrs) so my thighs are pretty muscular but i can never get rid of my jiggly inner-thighs. is there a way to firm them to or should i just not bother and continue to accept em the way they are? |

Well obviously the smart thing to do would be to not do these things in the first place. The fact is, people do. Look, all I can say is that I know 3 people who have done it, all advised by medical professionals, and they've felt really good afterwards. And as for not really cleaning out toxins? You should see what came out of his colon. (a bit disgusting, but he took a pic b/c it was really incredible how much there was...) |

| Directly quoted from a wellness counselor: "Why detox? Didn't God make us in a way that the body can eliminate toxicity on it's own? This is a good question. The body does have it's own built-in filtering systems and they work very well. If they didn't, in today's polluted world, the human race would already be extinct. So why aren't our natural systems enough to keep us healthy? Let's compare those systems of the body to a factory worker for a moment. Consider a factory worker who works a regular 8 hour shift, doing nothing but taking out waste from the factory. This worker carries buckets of waste from the factory out to a waste dump somewhere, for 8 hours a day. Pretty tiring but most healthy workers can handle it. Now, let's consider what would happen if the waste load suddenly tripled? How long would that factory worker survive working a triple shift? So, how might a body triple the toxic waste within it? Oh, there are several ways to create this unhealthy situation. Sugar Consumption - Refined sugar holds waste in the intestines far, far too long. Excess refined sugar also helps promote an environment in which candida thrives. I personally feel that the consumption of refined sugar is a major contributing factor in the development of colon cancer and of course, the link to diabetes is well-established. There are healthy alternatives to refined sugar but these do NOT include (in my opinion) high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, saccarin sweeteners or even splenda. Consuming any of those while attempting a body detox is counter-productive, in particular, and I just don't consider them healthy any other time either. My recommendations for healthy sweetening include Agave Nectar (it is truly delicious) and Stevia (choose your stevia brand carefully as some have a bitter aftertaste). Fat Consumption - Oxidized fat (created in every fast food french fry and onion ring we eat) and excess fat consumption overloads the liver and is very hard on the system, in general. Excess fat contributes to the development of heart disease and high cholesterol. Lack of Water Consumption - You may have read wildly differing opinions on how much water the body needs to function normally. Here's my two cents on that subject....the human body is mostly made up of water. It is just common sense to me that the body would function and eliminate wastes best with more water than less. Consider using an ionizer system to alkalize water for even better elimination and health benefits. Detoxing the body effectively is not possible in a dehydrated system so hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate some more when you are detoxing. I personally still follow the 64 ounce a day rule but I work to drink my water in regular intervals throughout the day and night (I keep a glass by my bed and if I wake during the night, I make a point of drinking more water). And I make sure I'm drinking good water, purified water. I also add something to alkalize my water. There are many options for alkalizing water and you can explore that on the internet. I use several different products. One is called is called Body Alkalizer and another is called Xooma. Sedentary Lifestyle: If you are one of millions who make their living as I do, sitting in front of a computer all day, the risk of colon toxicity intensifies. There is something about sitting in one position for a long time that interferes with colon function, in my opinion. We were not created to sit slumped down in front of a computer or a tv for hours. The body was designed to move and stretch and walk." |

| i read in a book on nutrition that its very healthy to do a detox every so often. ur body does naturally regulate, but it can get overworked at times, resulting in u feeling lethargic, achy, or getting mild headaches. it said that its good to do 1 day fasts abt once a month (drinking any clear fluids- juices, broths...) and longer ones like once a yr (6 days or so). of course u have to ask a doc b4 u do a longer one. my bro-in-law did a long one recently and he said he felt soo good- he had more energy than when he was eating! he had a colon cleasing supplement while he did it but u dont necessarily need one. after the fast, u gotta ease urself back into eating- the first day, ur gonna have to drink a lot still and just eat a little bit of light stuff. increase to normal eating in a few days. also, if during the fast u need to eat, u can have a lil watermelon. (but try to do that only if u really need to) hope i helped- remember, wtvr u do, ASK A DOCTOR FIRST |

wow haha i JUST stopped doing that like a month or two ago... i was worse tho- 400 calories (high volume, low cal foods) in the day and LOOOTS at night. i was also scared id just b hungry and would want some high cal food at night. i also know that my self-control wanes as the day progresses. anyways, SOLUTION (at least, it was for me neways): have 6 meals during the day. figure out how much u wanna eat and split it up between them (its really best to write down exactly wat ur gonna eat- u stick to it more like that. try to have lots of small things so u can have variety within each meal to keep it more exciting). make sure ur last meal is NOT supper. that way, when u finish what u planned to have for supper, u wont eat more because you know you still have another meal coming in 2 hours or so. its also really helpful if ur last meal is close-ish (not too close) to bedtime so u wont be tempted to eat more. or exercise right after ur last meal so u dont have an appetite to eat more. here's a sample of one of my days: 8:00- cup of cereal cup of rice milk 10:30- rice cakes carrot sticks 1:00- cup of cereal (i really like cereal (-: ) plain yogurt apple 3:30- 1/4 cup raisins couple tbsp nuts 6:00(my biggest meal of the day cuz its homemade)- 1 cup chicken - 1 cup salad - nectarine 8:30- yogurt 5 small dates &nb sp; 1/2 cup cereal note- the first couple days u do this, u prob wont be so hungry by the time eaach meal time comes around cuz ur used to eating so little but if u just force urself, ull be used to it in no time and eating much healthier good luck if u try it- hope it works! |
