Health & Support My fight agaisnt pro ana&mia websites Sep 23 2008

I can kind of see both sides of the issue.  I am also in recovery, but when I was at my worst I went to these sites for comfort and a sense of belonging.  I didnt need to be "taught" how to get anorexia...I already was.  Many of these sites have warnings telling those who are not already sick to leave.  Ive seen these sites and I know they seem disturbing, but I dont really see anyway to get rid of them.  Its kind of like pornsites.   People can become addicted to porn and these websites feel that addiction...but I dont think they will ever be completely eliminated.  Ive learned that I cannot really control others, only myself.  I think it would be better to invest time in trying to promote a healthy body image.

I do think some people are more likely to have eating disorders based on genetics or personality type(people-pleasers,perfectionists, OCD, low confidence, etc.)But probably people without these factors can get it as well.  The way I see it, starving yourself is an effect of the mental disease. So I guess starving is not really the disease...but a way of coping with the disease...if that makes any sense.

Ok, I think thats all I have to say...haha, just had to get that off my chest.
Weight Gain weight gain for anorexic recovering Sep 18 2008

Well, last year I started trying to increase, but I still havent gotten my calories to over 1500-1600.  But I really am trying.  I dont weigh myself often but I really havent gained at all and others tell me Ive lost weight.  I would say you should probably go for at least 2000 calories, or maybe even more.
Foods Can you eat too much fruit? - "Very high in sugar" Sep 18 2008

Well...Ive always been told that fruit sugar is ok, and its healthy, but could be a problem if your not getting enough of the other nutrients.  But 1000 cals doesnt really seem like enough to eat, maybe you should speak with a nutritionist.  You probably need at least 1500 calories or more.

Yes, I agree with the Smuckers.  You do have to stir it, but its really good and a lot healthier than regualar peanut butters.

Hi Spek,

I know what your going through. I need to gain weight badly as well but still fear gaining too much.  I just stay off the scale..I just cant handle it.  I dont think scales are accurate and everyone fluctuates.  I used to drive myself crazy weighing myself a million times a day. I do better when I stay away.  But your right, it IS an evil cycle.  Don't give up!  I know its soo hard but I know we both can make it!  Just keep going! Good luck!
Health & Support panic attacks? Sep 14 2008

I recently started having panic attacks. My last one was my worst one.  My mom wanted to take me to the hospital but I didn't want to go.  I just sat down and kept trying to breath slowly.  I drank some water and that helped.  I do know people who have had to go to the doctor.  They had to call an ambulance for my grammy, but she was much older so maybe that could have something to do with it.  Im really not sure if it can seriously hurt you, but I sure felt like I couldnt breath, not sure what would have happened if I wasnt able to calm myself down. It probably does depend on the person and maybe their health history or age.

I take them to school with me.  They're very convenient, fast and portable.  Plus, they have lots of protein and nutrients.  Favorites are:

Peppermint stick, cookies and cream, oatmeal raisin, nuts n' cranberry, and smores.  I also like the apple cinnamon and strawberry sunrise luna bars.

I would never say anything because I know how powerful words can be.  Growing up in elemenatry school I was overweight.  I got made fun of a lot.  I hated my life and wanted to die.  So I decided to go on a "diet." Fast forward about 10 years.  Im now 20 years old, 5'4, and 75 lbs.  Ive been trying to recover from anorexia for around 3 years.  Now I know I get stared at when I go in the grocery store.  I look at calories, labels, etc.  People think its weird.  A few weeks ago a woman came up to my mom and asked her what was wrong with me.  I've had people come up to me, trying to make me "better, telling me to load up on junk food. I know they mean well, but they have no idea about me or my life.  If I saw an overweight person, I would never say anything. Though it might scare me because Im so terrified of becoming overweight, even though I know I cant with the way I eat. Im sure your a good person and want to help, and if she wanted help or asked, you could give her great advice.  But I know how powerful and hurtful words can be.  Just my opinion, but Id keep my mouth shut.

I know the frozen type you can buy in the grocery store are around 160 calories.  I like them, I dont think they're the healthiest thing as far as nutrition goes, I mean no protein or calcium or anything, but I dont see any reason they would be bad for you.  Except maybe if they're fried or covered in butter like the ones at the mall, haha.  But yea, they seem fine to me.

Your dad could be right. I had plantar factitus last year and it lasted for over a month.  Mine wasnt really a pain, but it just realy hurt all the time and I had it in both feet. I could barely walk.  It started with my heals and then moved into my ankles. I did go to the doctor, she couldnt really do anything for me.  She told me to exercise and do stretches with my feet and told me to get some dr. scholls foot things.  Eventually, it did start to improve, it just took awhile.  I would definitely get a doctors opinion. Mine told me it was caused from just being on my feet a lot and putting stress on my foot. A doctor might be able to give you some tips on what to do for your foot.  Good luck!

I will be praying for you and those around you!  I really hope it wont be as bad as Ive heard....as for peanut butter-I eat it on everything-

apples

bananas

crackers

raisins

pretzels

pita chips

baby carrots(weird I know, haha!)

Other good nonperishable food might be: crackers, dry cereal, apples, bananas, baby carrots/celery, rice cakes.  There are also some types of milk and pudding that dont need refridgeration.   Also hard candy/gum might be good to have. That all I can think of right now, hope everything turns out okay!

'I really think you should see a nutritionist.  Im recovering from anorexia, so I know what its like to feel full, while still eating few calories. It really doesnt look like thats enough food at all.  Theres not much fat or protein.  The food you listed does look very healthy, but probably doesnt give you all the nutrients you need. Sometimes its easier for me if I eat higher calorie, and low volume food like peanut butter, nuts, trail mix, stuff like that.  I also drink calories by drinking milk, smoothies, juice...it will give you more calories, but shouldnt make you too full. Im not a nutritionist and probably am not in a situation where I should be giving advice, but I have learned some about nutrition and you diet doesnt look like enough calories.  Again, nutritionists and other professionals can really help, so you may want to look into that.

I am in recovery(anorexia) and experience this a lot, especially when I get up from bending over or getting blood drawn.  However, I also think this happened when I was restricting.  I agree with Lala, though, I have high blood pressure and low sugar, so it may be from something like that.  You should probably make a doctors appointment and discuss it with a professional.  Good luck with recovery!
Health & Support Any snackers out there? Aug 26 2008

Spek: (sorry dont know how to do the quote thingy haha.)

1.how long between your snacks

It depends on what I have for time-if Im at home I probably snack as much as every 1-2 hours, but if Im working/going to school, I just try to fit them in where I can and sometimes have to eat more at once if I dont get a chance to eat enough.

2.how many you have each day

If I dont have to worry about being anywhere, I probably eat like 7-9 times a day, but again some days I need to kind of combine snacks.

3.how many calories in each???

I usually only eat a few hundred calories at a time(like 100-300 cals) but should probably be doing more since I need to gain weight as well.

I guess for those of us recovering, we should just do what works best for us because we are trying to be healthy again, so whatever makes us comfortable and helps us get enough calories is probably the most important.
Weight Gain Banana's and peanut butter... Aug 23 2008

Haha. Wow. I thought I was the only one who had worries like this.  I need to gain weight, but I still constantly worry about getting the wrong types of food. Anyway, I also love bananas and peanut butter and also with apples.  I get the smuckers natural too. But bananas are natural sugar and I dont see any way to add sugar to a banana unless its banana chips or something. But pb goes very well with lots of things, banana,pb +honey is my favorite.  Ive also heard that pb before bed is actually a great snack, cant really remember why, something about the rate of digestion or something lol.  But Ive always heard carbs and healthy fats are good right before bed.

I do this too.  Partly because I get full quite easily and partly because seeing a ton of food on my plate makes me uneasy. I have set times where I know how much and what Im supposed to eat.  Im supposed to be gaining weight, so Im not sure if this is good for that, but if I dont know exactly what Im eating, I might forget to eat.  Its just easier for me this way because I dont feel stuffed all the time.  I dont really think theres any harm in it, I used to worry that it was weird, lol, but I guess lots of people do it.  I may need to adjust it a little though once school starts back up because I dont want to have to worry about getting enough to eat at the right times.  But for your lifestyle, I think it sounds fine:)

I love almonds.  I recently found dark cholate covered almonds which are very good!  Usually I feel guilty for eating foods high in fat, but I figure almonds are healthy, and dark chocolate has antioxidants, so I guess its all good, haha.  I also love the honey roasted and natural almonds!

I really think you are going to have to stop eating so many fruits and veggies.  Yes they are healthy, but you need carbs, protein, calcium.  Veggies will fill you up, so try to eat higher calorie food as well like nuts, cheese, peanut butter.  Also more whole grains.  I am in recovery from anorexia and used to fill up on low cal foods like you, but to be healthy you need variety and a lot more calories.  If food fills you up too much, try more milk, smoothies, juice, stuff like that.  The way you are eating inow is going to lead you down a very bad road...

I do the same thing.  Im in recovery from anorexia, so I just cant handle large amounts of food at once. So I really have no choice, unless I eat less, which I cant do.  Ive always heard that eating frequently and often is best, but Im not really sure. But I do think muttlover has a point.  If you go to school or have a job, eating this way may get too hard because you might not have time to get all your calories in.  But I feel better eating small amounts so I dont have to stuff myself and just eating more often.

When my ED was at its worst, I remember nearly passing out in the shower quite a few times, its the worst feeling in the world.   I used to just make myself lay down someplace cool until I feel better. I experienced what you were talking about with your ears ringing, it was almost like my ears were blocked and eventually I couldnt hear at all.  This happens sometimes when I get my blood taken and I sometimes lost my vision as well...yea, not cool.  I think you should definitely try to get some help to figure out whats going on.  The fact that you passed out, should tell you somethings wrong.  But your right, thats definitely not enough calories, especially with all that exercise.  Have you ever seen a nutritionist?  They can definitely help you out with what to eat and how much you need to eat.  It would probably be a good idea to see a doctor as well.  Eating disorders are really tough to get away from, Im attempting recovery as well, but recovery is definitely possible.  Good luck!
Weight Gain impact on family Jul 29 2008

Well, first of all this is a disease that is very hard to understand for anyone whose never had it.  Its just hard to understand why its so complicated.  Eat more, exercise less, gain weight-get better!  Haha...not quite that easy.  My family couldnt understand at first, but with time, they became more understanding.  It is an addiction and is more mental than physical.  An eating disorder affects everyone around you, and it just takes time for everyone to understand.  Maybe you could go to a doctor and bring your mom, and maybe explain to her how you want to eat more, and eat healthy at the same time.  Its very difficullt, I know, but hopefully it will get better as you recover. I know my ed has been very hard on my family, but I am trying very hard to recover.  If you cant talk to your mom, perhaps you could write her a letter, explaining that you are trying really hard and let her know how hard your working to get better. There are lots of great books out there on eds for sufferers and family members.  Also maybe a therapist can help.  I hope everything works out well, good luck with recovery, keep moving forward!

Ugh...I REALLY hope thats not true...it doesnt really make sense.  I mean I was overweight when I was little, probably because I ate too much junk and didnt exercise enough.  Im 20 now, had anoriexia for 3-4 years.  I am about 76 lbs now, Im trying to recover, I eat about 1500 calories  a day, and am not really gaining weight but Im so scared of eating more and becoming fat.

Logically I know this wont happen.  I mean, as long as you eat healthy, you wont be overweight right?? I mean, everyone burns a certain amount of calories, regardless of the past right?  Aaaaaaah...dont give me another reason to be paranoid, lol!

Hello everyone!  I havent posted in awhile, but right now I guess Im doing so-so.  Im sorry for those of you struggling, but its great to hear about others making progress!  I think Im somewhere in the middle. Its just so confusing trying to figure out what "normal eating" is.  I dont know when Im hungry, I feel like portion sizes are so big, and Im terrified of junk food.  But I did buy some non-sugar free ice cream the other day, haha, so I guess its progress. Before I used to count every gram of sugar/fat/carbs, everything, but Im getting better about that I think. Just cant shake the OCD, lol.  I'm TRYING to eat more, but still cant even get over 1500 cals.  I just feel guilty if Im feeling better because I just keep thinking of all those people in the world going through hard times.  But I realize by hurting myself Im also hurting my family, so Im trying:) I actually find I do better when I dont have to worry about appointments with therapists, doctors, etc. But I suppose Ill have to go back to them once the school year starts.

Lalabanana-Congrats on your progress! I want to see that movie so bad but all the theaters around here are selling out!  I also get what your saying about feeling lonely.  My family is very understanding, but It would still be nice to find a guy, Im just so self concious because I know my body looks bad.

Well I guess I just have to keep trying to move forward and telling myself what Im doing is right.  We cant go backwards!  Hope everyone has a great day!
Health & Support what might cause a lack of appetite? Jul 25 2008
01:11 (UTC)
2
Hmmm...well sometimes I have a lack of appetite, but its most likely from my ED(had anorexia for like 3+ years)...so I think eating disorders can cause it because your used to less food.      &nbs p;       & nbsp;   It can also be caused by certain medications.  Anxiety/depression can also contribute.  When you have a lack of appetite maybe you could try to drink more of your calories in milk/smoothies or juice. You could also eat more things like nuts and peanut butter to boost your intake.  If your body is used to less calories you probably will get full faster, but I think eventually your body adjusts to a change.  Can't really think of any more reasons for lack of appetite, but Im sure there are many.  Maybe seeing a doctor or nutritionist can help you out with the problem or give you suggestions.  Good luck!

Health & Support rant- my nutritionist is useless!!! Jul 23 2008
23:17 (UTC)
oooohhhhh...dont even get me started on nutritionists!  Ok my first one was extremely mean and actually yelled at me for being a vegetarian!  She then put me on a >1200 diet(I was a normal weight at the time)  I was seeing a doctor at the same time who basically weighed me(I lost weight everytime I went) then tell me to eat more, more protein...blah, blah, blah.   I lost like 20 pounds by the time I stopped going to her.  Then I started college, saw new doctors, but it was a hard year, and I lost another 20 lbs. by the end of the year.  The last nutritionist I saw was very nice, but only had me eating 1300 cals and told me I would gain if I ate over 750 cals. (she multiplied my weight by 10)  Anyway, I havent lost any more since them, but am basically maintaining somewhat right now eating like 1500 calories but I know I still need to gain weight.  I am seeing different doctors now who gave me good medications and has been better.  The best thing for me is just surrounding myself with possitive people and trusting my intuition.  There are many books out there about nutrition/EDs so maybe you could check out that..but yea, that was my rant on nutritionists...lol.
Health & Support dazed and confused Jul 23 2008
22:47 (UTC)
Well, its good that you KNOW you have a problem.  You have to want to get better to recover.  Im still struggling with it and its rough.  You'll probably get some information at your appointment, but I would also reccomend seeing a nutritionist and possibly a therapist...therapy didnt do much for me, but it works for a lot of people.  I can't give much advice because I feel like Im still far from complete recovery,  but there are many people around here who I'm sure can give you great advice about how to recover.  I know how you feel though...when I was first diagnosed...its like the first time you know for sure that something is wrong with you...its been said outloud. I remember just thinking to myself..."you have anorexia...this can kill you...its real now, diagnosed and dangerous."

Its kind of like a revelation...its not about weight anymore.  There are tons of books out there and many towns have support groups.  There are others going through this like you ,that can understand. It is hard, but recovery is definitely possible!  Good luck!!

Ive also been noticing I feel hungrier, but sometimes its hard to tell, I think I confused my body when it comes to hunger signals.  But I guess I should be hungrier cuz Im still only at 1500 cals, but its hard to increase while eating healthy...still so afraid of junk food.  But I hope it doesnt take that long to get my body back to normal...my first "attempt" at recovery was over 3 years ago, but it all really started even before that.  Oh well, I guess I just have to keep trying.

Aww, man I burnt my finger really bad awhile ago on a hot pan that was in the stove.  Mine kind of turned white, but Ive also heard it can be very red, and even swollen.  Not sure how bad your burn is, but it really helps to run it under cold water.  Lotion or some type of gauze might also work well.  If you google first aid, you could probably find some kind of help.  Good luck!
