i agree with spirochete 100%  i don't know anything about your boyfriend or your relationship so i cannot give you any advice about that. from your statement i can only find clues about your self image and self-esteem.

you need to stop comparing yourself to others, especially if it only makes you feel down. you need to accept yourself, your looks, and your body. change the things you can, and just accept the things you can't. this is your life, and you only get one. why waste your time feeling down and out all the time?

Original Post by lysistrata:

I will suggest (and probably be flamed for suggesting) that perhaps it's because women are becoming more self-centered.  Feminism has taught women that they don't need a man around.  That's fine and good; but if you choose to have a man around anyway, and continue to act as though you don't need (or want) a man around, how is he supposed to feel about that?  Or are we buying into the myth that men don't have feelings?

There is nothing wrong with doing things for your man's sake, for the simple reason that it makes him happy.  Most men like to be treated as a protector, a provider, and the head of the house.  Yes, maybe those are "stereotypes" and traditional roles, maybe they date to your mother's generation (they're much older than that, IMHO), but pragmatically speaking, it doesn't matter. What matters is what works.  A well-cared-for man = a happy man = a good partner.

i think you are saying something really important here.. however you seem to be missing one key idea. there is nothing wrong with following traditional roles if that is what you want to do. i am a feminist and believe that men and women should know that they have a choice in the matter. therefore, one should do things because he or she wants to and not because it is her/his gender-based job.

e.g. I cook because I like to, not because it is my job as a woman.

maybe you shouldn't share the gaining aspect with everyone without an explaination like... "i feel so tired and unhealthy at this weight"

try to keep a positive outlook and remind yourself why you are on this journey.. its also good to share with others because, who knows, maybe some of those girls are struggling with anorexia themselves. many times when people do things they know are bad, and they look to others to enable them and make them not feel guilty about their own choices

plan ahead.

if you know that everyday you come home and pick on things that aren't healthy, prepare some healthy snacks that you can grab right out of the fridge or cabinet. the idea here is to make the healthy snacks quick and easy.

drink more water and double check your food intake. working out can definitely increase hunger.. have you been writing down everything you eat? i'm not sure how you like to track you caloric intake... but if you are guesstimating then you may want to take a closer look. if you are sticking to your food goals and working out then the weight should be coming off.. and it should be showing on the scale. you should also check out the scale you are using and make sure that it is somewhat accurate.

I read one study which attributed the mass amount of growing waistlines to sedentary lifestyles. Food also plays a role, however, inactivity does come with a price. Video games, computers, jobs based around computers, cars, food stores and schools farther away from homes... these are all factors.

the formula:

Increased non-nutritional food intake + sedentary lifestyles = obesity epidemic!

that happened to me before, it was like I was having 2 periods a month for a short while. I asked my gyno about it and she said that it was okay and that if the problem persists I should contact her again. it ended up fixing itself all on its own. it sucks but it should be nothing to worry about.

my advice: hide the scale for 2 weeks and stick to your plan.

drink lots of water. take body measurements and retake them every two weeks. your body is adjusting to this new lifestyle. i know that it is frustrating but you just have to give it some time. you should adjust your caloric intake to the appropriate amount on days that you exercise. make sure that you are eating healthy, nutritious foods. also, do not deprive yourself.

you can find a really good support system on this site for starters. maybe you should talk to your family and tell them that you've just chosen a healthier lifestyle and that doesn't make you anorexic. also, you should reflect on your own weight-loss journey. think back to your reasons for losing weight and your eating habits. is what your doing really healthy? if so then keep it up. if you find that you are going about things in a way that can be dangerous and unhealthy, you can also find support for that on CC.

hey matty, i've been doing pretty good over here. i finally started to lose weight again (at a steady pace without yo-yo-ing for once!) I started an exercise routine and so far I have stuck to it (it's been 44 days already!). I am very excited about the change that I have made in regards to my activity level. Hopefully I can keep doing what I'm doing after school starts up again in september.

hey, i'm 21 too :-)

I want to lose weight so that I can enjoy the rest of my 20's (as well as 30's 40's 50's ect) to the fullest. I knew that if I didn't start now, the difficulty of getting in shape would continue to increase.

I started out at 160lbs (my height is 5'4.5''). So far I have lost 4 lbs.

I've been on this site for about 2 years, but it's only been 1 month since I've started a good exercise/eating program and stuck to it.

a stool softener may help your situation. it is not as strong as a laxative, it just helps your stool to absorb water. the end result should be a smooth evacuation (without cramps or diarhea).

i would try the vicks thing first. some people have a medical condition that causes them to have uncontrollable, pungent body odor. sometimes it is something that cannot be helped.
