Weight Loss What about fasting? Questions and Opinions. Mar 09 2008

In my opinion fasting is not a very good idea, when you deprive your body of food your metabolism will slow down to compensate... then when you do eat your slower metabolism will make you more likely to store fat.

the best way to speed up your metabolism is to eat several smaller meals per day rather than a few large ones. I assume you are considering fasting to lose weight... seems like a bad approach to me.

hey have you tried natural stevia extract? You can find it as most health food stores... it comes from the stevia leaf which is 30 times sweeter than sugar without the calories... so you only need a few drops to sweeten tea or coffee. Artificial sweetener companies have sucessfully kept it from being labelled as a sweetener because they don't want to compete with it. Stevia also actually helps to regulate blood sugar so it is great for diabetics, and it also has an alkaline effect which means improved health it can reduce and satisfy your cravings for sweets... personally i love it!!

It used to be the only sweetener allowed in diet products in Japan... until coca cola came around and persuaded them to allow aspertame (a dangerous chemical sweetener) Ironically now, I heard that coca cola is actually trying to get stevia approved as a sweetener by the FDA. You might see coke sweetened with stevia... that would be amazing!

Have you tried FOS fructo oligo sacharides? Also called INULIN It comes from chicory root and not only is it a great source of fiber but it is a prebiotic to support the good bacteria in your intestines, it feeds the good bacteria so it can flourish... it is also great for diabetics because it helps to regulate your blood sugar and reduces cravings. It also helps with endurance if you are working out.

recently it has been apearing in yogurt and cereals, it disolves very well in water and has a very very slight sweet flavor... when I take it, I find it much easier not to over eat.

it also increases calcium absorption whereas whole grains have phytic acid which interferes  with calcium absorption.

great alternative with many added benefits!

most soy is also genetically modified which could contribute to allergies. I read all the ingredients on all the food I buy, to avoid soy among other things.

for a while I thought soy was the ultimate health food and I was eating a bunch of it... till i realized it was giving me bad skin. I did research on it and found several reasons why my skin could be effected by it, it contains phytoestrogens which act like estrogens.. anytime you mess with hormones it can show up on your skin. (the phytoestrogens have also been linked to thyroid and breast cancer) It also prevents absorption of many vitamins and minerals like  calcium and zincwhich is essential to good skin. Processed soy contains carcinogens and I could go on and on about it. You are better off without soy regardless of your allergy.

If you need another alternative protein, I like hemp protein in my morning smoothy which also contains:  about a pound of organic spinach a banana frozen berries, water, and stevia (a natural non-chemical sweetener)

as far as carbs that are grain based, it is simple anything that contains wheat... like breads, crackers, muffins, buns... any kind of flour based food should be limited. Many people are allergic to the gluten of wheat as well. Good carbs are whole foods all kinds of vegetables... brown rice is also healthy... just keep servings small.

one website I really like is www. mercola.com he has good health advice.

this website also contains some helpful information.

http://www.westonaprice.org/soy/index.html

Since you have many allergies one thing to consider may be taking probiotics... ie: the good bacteria which should exist in your intestines. I like to take F.O.S. from chicory root which is a prebiotic fibre that selectively feeds the good bacteria in your gut. If you have good intestinal flora you should be less sensitive and allergic.

hope that helps!

I am just casting some doubt that soy is good for you. I agree there are still some good scientific studies out there, I don't mean to be so negative, I found some less obviously biased studies on soy which found negative effects... some found positive effects but considered only isolated compound in the food. I'm just saying that we need to be aware that not all studies are trustworthy, and there is a large volume of studies generated by industry.

have you heard of Monsanto? They produce gm roundup ready soy... they are a huge proponent of the soy industry. If you don't know monsanto look into them and I think you will add them to your list.

ok I get a little feisty as well when it comes to this stuff. I know if you eat a ton of soy, you don't want to hear that you may possibly be harming yourself....

Unfortunately, these days it is also difficult to trust the medical community... Medical doctors have very limited education on nutrition... conventional nutritionists are educated with industry sponsored textbooks and science has been degraded to a tool used by industry to promote products, there is a ton of industry sponsored hype about soy overcrowding any dissenting voice on the topic. I have seen at least a handful of scientific studies which found negative effects from soy, but these are lost in a haystack of biased industry sponsored studies.

I find it quite scary how adamantly soy consumers defend soy!

I don't regret one bit informing people of a possible health risk. Better safe than sorry. For all we know you could be part of that deceptive industry.  What did you say your profession was?

Hi, I think it is important to consider that there are different types of carbs, different types of proteins and different types of fat!

for carbohydrates... grain based carbs especially the refined ones should be very limited...they spike blood sugar levels.. vegetables are also considered carbs but you should eat as much as possible of those, organic is best! And some fruit is good too... apples are good because they don't spike blood sugar like some other ones do.

As for proteins.. this is a tough one... but I think it is best to avoid soy.. soy can interfere with your thyroid and slow your metabolism.. as well as cause many other health problems! I recently started sprouting my own mung beans.. they are a whole food loaded with vitamins and they contain protein as well. Free range organic meat is ideal if you can afford it! Fish is great too, smaller fish will contain less mercury, try to limit salmon intake, the only salmon that can be sold legally is farmed, farmed salmon are fed food pellets which make their meat grey, so they are also fed a toxic coloring that is banned in Europe( I got that salmon info from david suzuki)

as for Fats: I try to avoid vegetable oil, unless it is cold pressed extra virgin olive oil,  We typically get way too much polyunsaturated fat which contains omega 6 in our diets due to high consumption of vegetable oils. We get omega 3 from fish, flax and walnuts... or fish oil supplements. If you are lacking in omega 3 your skin is more vulnerable to the sun and your brain is more vulnerable to depression. Most vegetable oil in processed food is rancid due to high heat, chemical or pressure extraction soybean oil is most processed and the worst possible oil to eat aside from motor oil ;) ** NEVER Cook with vegetable oils, canola ect... (olive oil included) because they are very unstable and turn rancid when heated. The best thing to cook with is coconut oil, because it is much more stable..coconut oil also has many health benefits look into it. www. mercola.com is a good site.

Good fats are very good for you, your skin arteries etc... Fat is not acurately named because fat doesn't make you fat.. refined carbs and sugars are much more efficient at that!

I agree that anything in excess can be harmful but there is not much nutritional value to soy, 60% of processed foods contain some form of soy, so eating it even in moderation is becoming very difficult. Most soy is also genetically modified.. we have no idea what effects this could have. There is no benefit of soy that outweighs the risks!

The soy industry has spent billions to make us believe that soy is a health food, and downplay its dangers. The FDA is powerless against these large corporations. The first time they tried to get soy protein passed by the FDA it was to be used in cardboard for food packaging, the FDA denied it because of concern that the carcinogens in the soy protein could leech into the foods the packaging contained... and now we are eating the soy protein itself!

It's amazing how deffensive people are about soy... the amazing health food... Those advertising dollars were very very effective.

Meat has it's own problems, I try to buy free-range organic meat when possible.

I agree with everything in moderation, but there are some "super-foods" like organic spinach,  or blueberries  for example... Soy is just not even a safe food in the amounts it is being consumed. Over 60% of processed foods contain soy products, I read the ingredients of everything I buy and it is very difficult to find foods that do not contain soy. Soybean oil has replaced all other oils in most processed foods... soybean oil is chemically extracted, contains carcinogens and is rancid.. a very unhealthy oil! Soy protein has been slipped into a wide range of foods...even meat products.

The Weston A. Price Foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charity, it is not industry sponsored.

You seem to be defensive of soy, why? It's neurological effects are getting to you? Just kidding ;)

better than free range organic meat? ethically? what's your argument? If you are on this site to try and lose weight, than you might want to consider that soy can mess up your thyroid and slow down your metabolism.
Foods Artificial Sweeteners Oct 23 2007

there are many negative health effects from artificial sweeteners... some people are more sensitive to those chemical sweeteners than others... I personally go to great lengths to avoid that poison. Go to the links below to find out more! And try Stevia it is completely natural from the stevia plant, it's leaves are 30x sweeter than sugar, so it only takes a tiny bit to sweeten your drink... it actually helps regulate blood sugar!  STEVIA can be found in health food stores...it is considered a supplement because the large corporations behind artificial sweeteners have prevented the FDA from approving it as a sweetener to avoid competition.

a good article about the dangers of artificial sweeteners:

http://www.westonaprice.org/modernfood/aspart ame.html

and this is a great website... Dr. Mercola actually wrote a book on this topic called  Sweet deception, check out the link.

Hey everybody... I have done some research on those artificial sweetners and I avoid them as much as possible. Just because the FDA approved it, that doesn't mean it's safe. The FDA has very little power over the Large Corporations behind these chemical sweeteners! I have discovered an amazing alternative!!! STEVIA! Stevia is all natural from the stevia plant, it's leaves are 30 times sweeter than sugar.. it takes only a few drops of the extract to sweeten your coffee or tea preferably, stevia has no significant calories and actually helps regulate your blood sugar. Monsanto the company behind aspertame has blocked stevia from being approved by the FDA as a sweetener as they are affraid of the competition...but recently coca cola has been trying to get it approved  as a sweetener so you might hear more about it soon.  You can buy it as a "herbal supplement" in most health food stores... look into it for yourself..
