Thanks for your input Rainjoules!

You're absolutely right about the claims.  I always have a hard time picking apart the DSHEA.

I'm not familiar with CLA originiating in sunflower seeds.  In my research I've found that the best sources are ruminant meats and dairy products.  Perhaps there are less significant amounts in sunflower seeds and supplement manufacturers use this source for all sorts of reasons (money, food safety, etc)?  Eating sunflower seeds is definitely safe, I don't argue that.  My concern just lies in consuming an amount of CLA that you would not normally get from eating a relatively normal amount of sunflower seeds.  The fact is, there isn't any research to show long-term safety of CLA.  That was my ultimate point.  That and be wary of supplements in general.  A good thing to do is do your research ahead of time.  There's also a seal on supplements that have been quality checked by an independent agency, but I can't bring the agency or the seal to mind.  Do you have an insight on this Rainjoules?

I work in Nutrition research, so I'm coming at this topic from an academia point of view.  I think topics like this are really interesting.  If we were sitting in the same room, I would love to pick your brain, Rain. :)

Hey Chichi!

I don't think that these supplements will aid in your weight loss efforts too much.  There has been research that showed that calcium intake has been related to weight loss, but I'm pretty sure these studies were investigating calcium intake through food, not supplements.  The main thing they're trying to sell you regarding weight loss is the CLA (conjugated linoleic acid).  CLA is marketed as a weight-loss aid, but research has been inconclusive, showing some mild weight loss in a few populations and none in others.  However, the main thing that you need to know is that CLA has not been studied long-term, and there is no data on effects of long-term use.

Many people don't know that supplements are not controlled like pharmeceuticals.  Supplements don't have to go through any sort of quality checks like food and medicine to make sure that they contain what they are supposed to.  In addition, the companies that sell them don't have to prove that they work or that they are safe.  As a rule of thumb, I avoid supplements unless they have been quality-checked by an independent agency.  If you want to know about some of these agencies, you can just google them.

Hope this helped a little!

I don't think I'd use the Wii to replace my fitness routine, but I definitely think it's fun to play!  I was also kind of delighted when I weighed in a few pounds lighter on the Wii than I do on my own scale. :)

I live at 266 meters and the race is at 1655 meters.  I live relatively close (2 hours) form the mountains, and towns in that area are at about 1100 meters.  I just don't really have the time or money to go spend a prolonged period of time there simply to run.

I'm so glad I saw this post!  I've just been stewing in the fact that no one has noticed any changes, or rather, that no one has said anything.  I haven't lost that much weight, around 8.5 pounds, but I recently drastically shortened by hair as well, and no one says ANYTHING!!!  When they do, they're like "did you color your hair?"

I've just decided that no one looks at me.  heheheh    :)

How much water are you drinking each day?  Sometimes drinking more can help with it.  Also, I think potassium can help with muscle cramps (i.e. bananas!).

Are you eating before you run?  If so how long do you wait and what are you typically eating?

Also!  When you order at PF Changs you can ask for no oil, light oil, light sauce, sauce on the side, or stock velveted (uses vegggie stock instead of oil).  This helps cut down on some calories and fat! :-)

I just ate lunch at PF Changs this afternoon!  I got one of the lunch bowls (moo goo gai pan).  I ate half and that's about 260 calories including brown rice.  The buddha's feast is also the same number of calories with brown rice.  If you get it steamed, the calories go down DRASTICALLY.  A couple of the vegetarian entrees would be great to cut in half also, but keep in mind that while the nutrition info on the website is for an entire platter, it doesn't include rice.  Check out their website.  I'm also a fan of Panera Bread (half their turkey sandwich and a cup of french onion soup without croutons and cheese) or Moe's (any item on the kid's menu).

Weight Loss The No S Diet, anyone tried it? Jun 13 2008

I've never heard of this diet, but I'm not sure I like the thing about no snacks.  As far as I know, studies have shown that distributing your calories throughout the day helps keep your metabolism going throughout the day.  One study I read last semester showed that distributing your energy intake throughout the day and keeping intakes below 300 calories at a time (think:  cut your meal in half and eat one half now, and the other half later) helped decrease body fat percentage and increase lean body mass percentage in female athletes (mostly gymnasts and some runners).  While the results haven't been investigated in regular folk like us, it's still an interesting concept that seems like it may have relevance and deserves some thought. :)

You're right it definitely isn't easy.  I think a lot of people don't understand how difficult it can be to get over emotional and stress eating.  When I first decided to knock it off, I had big issues at night.  I've never been addicted to cigarettes, but I imagine that how I was feeling was pretty close to a smoker needing a fix.  I felt like I needed to be doing something with my hands and I was horribly cranky and pissed off.

That obviously didn't last long.  What I did to beat out the emotional eating was I replaced the crappy stuff I was eating with better options and saved myself about 300 calories after dinner so I could have 3 snacks that were about 100 calories each.  Then I found a handful of snacks that I could eat a large volume of for around 100 calories (homemade popcorn, veggie booty, meringue cookies, chocolate grahams, etc.)  Once I did that for a while I kind of naturally eased off them.  I'm still far from over it but I think I'm doing okay :)  Best of luck to you!

Usually when I fall off the wagon it's because I've been too restrictive on my diet.  In other words, I haven't allowed myself to eat things that I like or things that I want.  Everyday I let myself have a little cheat, so I'm satisfying my cravings and doing right by my body.  For example, the day before yesterday I had a mojito (okay, I had two mojitos).  Yesterday I had half a burrito from Qdoba.  Both fit into my calorie intake for the day, so I didn't blow anything, but I didn't feel like I was on a diet or restricting myself.

Also, do you know if you're an emotional or stress eater?  It helps to figure out why you're eating when you eat.  Like the other day I started to figure out the bills, which is kind of stressful for me, and I unconsciously got up and walked into the kitchen to get a snack.  Once I was there I realized that I only wanted to eat because I didn't want to do the bills.  It sucked but I left without eating anything and went back to the task at hand.

Hope that helps a little :)

Fitness Do you eat before you run? Jun 13 2008

I definitely eat before I run.  I actually don't usually wake up hungry, but I eat breakfast anyway because I know I need the energy.  I usually eat a bowl of cereal (3/4 cup cereal, 220 cals, and 1 cup of skim milk ~80 cals) about 20 minutes before I run.  I eat, chill for a few minutes, then change and by the time I'm ready to go I feel like I'm good to go.  I'm only running about 30 minutes, though.

Hey Monkey!  I just recently started running again, and I used the Couch to 5k podcast.  If you have an iPod you can go to iTunes and search couch to 5k.  They're free podcasts that are set to music and the guy that made them tells you when to runa nd when to walk.  The program starts off with run/walk combinations and works all the way up to running 30 minutes, just like the girl next to you :)  I highly suggest it.  I'm running a 5K tomorrow morning! :)

Fitness When it rains... Jun 13 2008

Isabelle-  When it's raining outside, I say go for it!  I looooove running in the rain and snow!  Something about it is really invigorating and it makes me feel like I'm hardcore. :)  Obviously I wouldn't do it if it were pouring, hailing, or lightening/thundering, and I  wouldn't do it in the road, only on sidewalks.  Walking in the rain for an hour and a half may be a little tedious, though, so I don't know if it would be an option you'd consider.

Do you guys have FitTV in Australia?  We have a channel here in the States that has aerobics, yoga, and weights shows that come on periodically throughout the day.  If you don't have a channel like that, maybe you could invest in some workout DVDs for the winter months.

Weight Loss Binge eating, anything healthy instead? Jun 13 2008

I have the same issue with wanting to eat myself crazy at night.  I solve it by always being on the lookout for foods that I can eat alot of for relatively few calories.  Here are some of my nighttime solutions -

I pop popcorn on the stove with 1 teaspoon canola oil (40 cal) and 1/4 cup popcorn.  You end up with about 5 cups of popcorn that I flick with water lightly, then flavor with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.  YUM.  I also sometimes buy Vic's kettle corn, which you can eat 1.5 cups of for ~120 calories.  Also there are these tasty meringue cookies that are pretty sugary and you can eat 10 of them for 100 calories and they're pretty bulky.  If you put them all in a bowl it makes you feel like you're pigging out for only ~100 calories and they have protein, too.  I love Red Hot Blues tortilla chips (15 chips) from Garden of Eatin and salsa for around 150 calories.

The big thing I do though is I never ever eat these things out of the bag.  The second I do that, I start to eat too much.  I always put the amount I'm going to eat in a cup or bowl and take it to the living room.  It keeps me from "actually" pigging out and putting things in bowls makes the servings look huge.

Fitness Biking to Work!! Jun 13 2008

I recently just mapped out a biking path to work.  I usually get there via a parkway and highway, so I had to find alternate routes.  I haven't done it yet, but I'm working up my mileage and hope to start soon!  I actually did half of it today and WOW are there some crazy hills on that route!

Those of you who bike to work, how do you deal with being all sweaty when you get there?  How do you pack your bike?  And my big problem is that I'm not sure what to do with my laptop!  I'm so uncomfortable with it being on my bike, but I need it at work and home.  What to do, what to do.  Any ideas?

Health & Support Help!!! Getting all 4 Wisdom teeth removed!!! I'm freaked out :( Jun 12 2008

Hey Chelsie!

I had all four wisdom teeth removed about 4 years ago, and it was completely fine.  Not to gross you out, but they even had to cut each tooth into 4 pieces and remove them piece by piece.  I was awake the whole time with whatever the FANTASTIC gas is that they give you, and was lucid and talking to the doctor the whole time.  I can still remember complaining about the country music he was playing.

I ate ALOT of jello afterwards, but I had someone around to make it for me.  You might want to go ahead and stock up on soft things (yogurt!) and make them ahead of time (jello, mashed potatoes, whatever) and have it in the fridge.  I didn't do this, but it might be a good idea to get some liquid meals like slimfast or ensure, because there's nothing you can eat for the first little bit, and that would help make sure you're getting essential nutrients.  Plus I was wayyyy to messed up on meds for a few days and I never would have been able to get up and make something.

You know what else was awesome, I got these tiny little ice pack like you put in lunch boxes and they were perfect for putting on my cheeks. :)  I hope I didn't rant or repeat too much.  I'll be honest and say I didn't read the other responses before posting.  :)

I agree with Soph_slump.  I did a running program a few years ago and my coaches told us to run on an incline if running on a treadmill as opposed to running outside.  If I remember correctly, they said it helps to simulate the wind friction that you don't experience on the treadmill.

I loooove chocolate.  I had a big issue with it before I finally decided to put a stop to my crappy eating and laziness.  I'd eat 1000+ calories of it a NIGHT on a too-regular basis.  What I've been doing is giving myself little 100-calorie(-ish) chocolate treats like...

-4 pieces of trader joe's dark chocolate

-fat-free, low sugar/sugar-free fudgesicle

-~25 or 30 Annie's chocolate bunny graham

-TEN (TEN!!) chocoalte chip meringue cookies

-A sheet of chocolate graham crackers

- 1/3 cup of this awesome banana split trail mix from Fresh Market (banana chips, dried cherries, chocolate pieces, minimini-marshmellows, little nougat pieces, peanuts, and dried pinapple)

-frozen banana cut into pieces with 1 tablespoon regular chocolate syrup (you can have more of the lower sugar version, but I think it takes like alcohol and crap :-) )

Anyway, those are how I satisfy my cravings now.  Hope those help!  The fact that they're only around 100 calories makes it easy to fit them into your day :)

Yay chocolate!!

I'm having the same problem here. It's been getting above 100 and the humidity is stifling. Even running at 7pm means it's almost 90 degrees outside. I'm usually horrible at morning exercise, but this morning I just sucked it up and went running at 6am before going to work. It was still humid but about 72 degrees, which was a nice break! A brisk 5 minute walk before my run woke up my body and my lungs and starting off slowly helped me get into the groove! Not bad at all :) Well, not as bad as I was expecting. :)

Also, if the sweats are bothering you, maybe you could check out some of the men's sportswear like the long shorts and their pants. Their pants are usually too long for me when they fit my waist, but the shorts I find as a nice alternative to wearing women's skin-tight shorts and pants, and it's pretty breathable, depending on what type of material you get.

OH!  And I'm doing the couch to 5K program too!!  This morning was my first run in week 9!!! :)  That program is great!

naturallyd - I'm 25 y/o, 5'5'', and 165.  I want to get down to 135.

I hope that things pick up soon, I'm getting really discouraged.  :(  I just started three weeks ago, but I'd really like to some sort of sign that I'm doing something right.  I know people often hit plateaus, but for me in the past it's always been at those last five pounds or at least half-way through, and not the very beginning.  *sigh*

I'm using the food database. I just click on the food and click "add to food log." But on the page where you select how many servings, or items, or pieces, there's now an additional requirement to specify grams or ounces. It's like this for every food! I don't weigh my food, so this is making recording food a major project.

Hey PinkGirl!

I used to have the same problem, and sometimes still do.  What works for me is contracting my abs when I get a cramp while I'm running.  After contracting the muscles a few times, the stitch usually goes away.

Hope it works for you :)

I've found that the drier the lettuce the better. I usually get a head of green leaf lettuce, cut it up, wash it, and put it in a salad spinner to get all the water off. Then I zip-lock it and keep it in the fridge. It usually ends up lasting through the work-week if I cut it up Sunday night for work lunches. :)
