Weight Loss Does the Slim Fast Diet work? Mar 07 2008
14:15 (UTC)

I  wouldn't say that you would regain the weight if you drop slim-fast, you just have to be mindful of what kind of food you replace it with.

Oh, and I agree, chocolate is the best, strawberry, not good at all. And make sure they are really cold, even better.

Well, I depend on Slim Fast from time to time to get me through some days when I am around unhealthy choices, when I am rushing, or when I am not hungry but need to have something in my system.

They satisfy me for that meal and they also help keep me in line calorie-wise. They offer an excellent source of protein and calcium as well. I would not rely on them every day but I do use them 3-4 times a week.

EDIT: I only use the shakes, not the meal bars, etc.

Hey everyone!

Okay, check this out. I had brought a Lean Cuisine today for lunch. However, one of the chicks was ordering Chinese for lunch today. They pressure you so bad so I said hey, I will just have a salad for dinner. So I order some chicken chow mein. Now, I thought chicken chow mein was the noodles with some veggies and chicken. So, the chick comes back and my jaw dropped.

Why am I currently staring at a container that is holding a ton of celery, onion and cabbage with some chicken pieces throughout? It doesn't look like there is anything to be worried about calorie wise with this. I would say that it was cooked in chicken broth with some cornstarch to thicken it some so at most it has a lot of sodium. I am laughing because this is what I get. I should have just eaten the Lean Cuisine.

Okay, tasted this concoction and it does not taste bad, kinda like a watered down chicken vegetable soup. They could have at least put some carrots in here for color though....

Oh well, serves me right. Someone somewhere is watching out for me Innocent

allydan- thanks for the advice. I will see if I can do the substitute, good idea. The potato is 161 calories (i seldom put butter or sour cream on it, just a little pepper) but the veggies will take that down considerably.

I plan on cutting my steak in half. Then I will cut one half up into really small pieces and force myself to sit back and chew each piece at least 10 times. Surely that will get my jaw tired... I still haven't eaten anything yet today and that is because I am not feeling all that great. I am going to attempt to get a salad in at lunch, we will see.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes!

Well today I am crunching numbers (calorie wise). I am going out to dinner with my husband to a steak joint. They basically have steak, more steak, and more steak. They also have pork chops (I dont like them) and teriyaki chicken breast ( not to fond of the marinade plus i am chickened out). So, I think I am going to go with a sirloin and just eat half of it. It comes with a baked potato and a piece of Texas Toast and a salad bar. I love the salad bar so that won't be a problem but I am also trying to stay in my daily calorie intake of 1350. Not sure this is going to happen because for dinner alone it is going to be around 1100. What to do, what to do???

Hey everyone. Okay, I am cutting it close at the age of 29, but I definitely need to lose around 100 pounds. EDIT:my first goal is to get to 200 and see how I like the look. I do not have aspirations to be skinny, just healthy. I dream of the day when I can walk into the misses department. Kiss

I am currently 259 and I am 5'8.5. I started this journey on this website in July of 07 starting at 279 pounds. I got all the way down to 254 and then birthdays and holidays came, I started craving junk food and fast food again etc. Anyway, the situation was getting out of control and I realized the other day that the only person making excuses is me so I am back on track of journaling every day and also logging my foods every day. I have realized that there will be days that are bad but that does not mean that we have to throw in the towel so....

Back on track I am...now if I could just get my butt back to the gym (I go early in the morning so I don't have to take the kids and it is freezing here!)

Fitness Weights then Cardio? Nov 28 2007
16:20 (UTC)
I just ran across this thread. I went to a training session this morning and I was instructed to do weights before cardio. There was a lot of talk of hormones and stored fat and glycogen. Hell, it was 6:00 am, wasn't at my best mentally.

Like others have suggested, I am just going to try doing weights first/cardo second for a couple of weeks first. If it doesn't work for me I will switch it up.

Really loving this post. I see too many of the ' I just need to lose 10 pounds" posts and I just shake my head. I am all for people that are there, but it is not the kind of motivation I need. I started on this site at 276 in July and I am currently at 252 (was 249 the other day, getting kind of frustrated).

I have been slacking on posting journals, logging food, etc because I haven't been making as wise of choices and i also have been eating out a lot (tons of birthdays in the fall in my family). I want to get down to my first goal of 180 and my final of 165. Good luck to all!

Okay, thought I would read through this post again.

As for court weddings, I wouldn't knock them! My first wedding was in a church, reception and all (even though we did cut corners), but my second marriage occurred in the courthouse with my best friend and his best friend. I did not even tell my parents (they knew we were engaged) about the event because I feel that is how the first one got out of hand.

A wedding is not about the party that you basically pay for others to have a good time. My first wedding was a rushed, stressful, terrible day! My courthouse wedding was comical, relaxed, and more intimate to me.

The main receptionist at my agency paid $20,000 for her daughters wedding (the money was tracked by a news reporter who was doing  a segment on weddings). Needless to say, she was divorced 8 months later. She remarried now (courthouse wedding) and it is going on 15 years.

Just some food for thought.
Motivation 7 Day Cruise Aug 13 2007

I have been on 4 cruises and believe me, even though there will be food around at all times, you can have some very healthy meals! Most lines ( I have been on Carnival and Royal Caribbean) have a baked or grilled fish every day, baked chicken, and wonderful salads to choose from. Also, since food is usually offered around the clock, you shouldn't feel like you have to stuff yourself at any one time, just eat small meals throughout the day and you will be fine.

Also, if you are eating in the dining room each day, they offer many selections so pick the one that seems to fit your needs.

Have a great time (Alaska is going to be our next cruise!)
Motivation Wow. I fail at weekends. Aug 13 2007

I know how you feel. When I started this journey at the beginning of July, I would do great during the week but when the weekends hit, I would eat what everyone around me was eating such as pizza, fast food, candy, alcohol, etc.

I knew something had to give so I first loaded the dridge with things like ready to eat shrimp and cocktail sauce, veggies with lowcal dips, and tons of fresh fruit from bananas to apples to cherries. Every time I opened the fridge to snack on something, I went to my own little drawer in the fridge and picked an item. Believe me it has helped. If takeout is ordered in the house, i immediately drink at least 32oz. of water. That way, if I do eat some, it is only a little because I have so much water in me.

I also changed my weigh in day to Monday. That way, I am accountable for everything I did over the weekend.

Don't worry, you can do it! Just remember that one bad day does not throw away all the good days you have!

Okay, I have two actually. One was in 2005 at work. This is the first time I got really serious about losing weight.
I was at work distributing reports, went back to my desk and flopped in my chair. All of a sudden I heard a pop and down on the floor I went. My office was right up front and surrounded by 4 other offices so many people came out to find out what happened. One of the guys looked at the chair and said it was broken. Yeah, diet started the next day and it was going great until I got pregnant.

The most recent events were my vacation in April and a play in May. I did not fit entirely in the airplane seat because my hips were spilling over into the other seat and the guy next to me kept getting up and pressing down on the arm rest which was digging very deep into my thigh. Didn't even know about seat belt extenders or I would have asked for one because it was murder getting the seat belt to click.

I also went to Chicago to see The Color Purple. It was being held at the Cadillac Theatre and when I went to my seat, I could barely fit in it! Mind you they were a little narrow because it was an older theatre but damn! It does not feel good to be all cramped for over 2 hours but sit next to someone that can sit their purse in the seat along with themselves....

This may not be a great deal for some but it is to me. Every Wednesday there is an open 'Farmer's Market' in the square downtown. Usually, coworkers ask if I want to go and I decline saying it is too hot or I am too tired (it is 4 blocks away). Well today, I decided that I needed to get off my lazy butt and do something. I went, even bought a lot of fresh veggies, and did not feel tired coming back (even after carrying a 5 pound head of cabbage!).

Let's see. I got married the first time at 23, had my son when I was 24, my ex left when our son was 11 months, I eventually divorced him and remarried when I was 27 and also had a daughter in the same year.

I don't think I was too young with the first. I thought my relationship was secure (hell, I did get married first, tried to do it the right way), I just didn't see the jail thing coming (with him). I did have a stable job, my own place, etc. but I did go into some credit card debt at that time because I wanted my son to have everything he deserved (it wasn't his fault his dad left us).

My current husband initally wanted to have 2 kids together but after living with two children, he has realized he was crazy to think about adding another one to the bunch (he wanted me to get pregnant right after I had our daughter). So I think we are through with kids. We have a beautiful son and daughter (son's bio dad has only contacted him a couple of times). My husband wants to adopt my son so bad but the bio dad is being stubborn there...

Way too much info....sorry.

Okay just realized that I have a size 20T pants on from Lane Bryant. They are comfortable on my waist but a little snugger around my thighs.

All I can say is thank god for the 4% Spandex in there. That is probably the only reason why I have on a pair of 20's at 270 pounds.

Okay, maybe I buy the stretchiest clothes in the world because my weight when I started this was 276 (270 now) and I wear a 22 in pants. There are two pairs that are 24 but they are jeans and a brand that I do not usually buy. I have 2 stacks of size 20's in my closet that I wore two winters ago and I am hoping that I can get into them this winter.

Oh, I can't wait until I can shop somewhere else than the plus sizes. I hate stores (like Fashion Bug) where there is a seperate entrance for the plus size part. It is like half of the store has skinny people snickering at the other half of the store of fat people. UGH....

Sorry guys, cramping and in a bad mood.

LOL, it never fails, you go out, spend money on a pregnancy test and then the period hits. If I added up my receipts for that it would be.....hell, it would be more than I needed to spend.

Have you ever thought about switching the type of IUD you have? I have a Mirena IUD which is plastic. I have had it for 11 months and it has been pretty good to me (well except for this month). I have had days worth of cramps, a little spotting and that is all. Today it looks as if it is finally going to go full course but these cramps meanwhile are terrible. Usually my periods, if I have them, only last a couple of days...

Good luck with grad school too! Just for comfort, if you do get pregnant during a semester, professors are really nice about it. I had my son when I earned my BS and my daughter during my MBA. Both times I tried to plan around the kids but getting more online classes and just speaking with the instructors and letting them know upfront.

Oh, the days when I was typing papers on the computer and breastfeeding at the same time...women CAN do it all!

Thanks for sharing that! I can't say I do much for exercise besides walking the dog for about 20 minutes every day and walking 5 blocks to my car from work in the morning and evening. Of course, I am chasing the kids around at home and doing housework etc.

I am not an outdoors person (especially in the summer) and can't fit a gym membership in my budget right now but I plan to get something going by the fall, longer dog walks, etc. Right now, I am trying very hard to just count calories, something I have never done before.

I will continue with the short term goals and hopefully by the time my daughters birthday rolls around again next year, I will be 100 pounds lighter! (with the hopes that I can enjoy their next 60 birthdays)

Pics are great, you are doing wonderful. I did read your journal postings, please make sure you are eating 1200 calories+. If you exercise everday, you really need to eat more. If you still to fewer than that, your body's metabolism will slow and it will be harder once you go back to eating more calories.

I am right along with you on the Mirena advantages. I am so not planning to have another child and promised my husband that I would do the Mirena for 5 years and then if feelings are still the same, go ahead and get my tubes tied. I just wish my body would get it together. I have had it for just about a year now and I still do not feel regulated.
