Weight Loss Sugar Feb 15 2008

Well done, carolinamoon7 and jfgerald! Good luck with your weight loss. I used to love hot tomato juice. It's like a kind of soup. Mmm ...

I've never liked fizzy drinks much, so it's not that. I just think I was becoming kind of an addict, even though the excessive sugar consumption only went on for about a week - loving the rush and wanting more, more, more! ANYWAY, after a particularly bad day where I consumed ... umm ... 500g of sugar, I just thought, This has got to stop, my diet is more unhealthy than it's ever been.

I don't think I've lost my taste for it in just three days but I've been really good and haven't found it a challenge, really! Long may this continue.
Foods What do you eat for breakfast? Feb 14 2008
10:11 (UTC)
I eat the same thing at weekends as I do during the week.

I go through phases. It used to be soya yoghurt, then toast and fruit, then bran flakes, then porridge made with water and salt, then fruit salad, then homemade muesli.

At the moment I'm having oats mixed with linseed, raisins and sliced almonds - sometimes with soya milk and microwaved, sometimes with water and left to soak, sometimes with yoghurt.

mykanosdelight, how can you eat something so "lunchy" for breakfast? Ha, ha. I don't think I could do it!

Potato waffles and beans? LOL ... of all the things to miss. Oh, and of course we know what Mexican food is ... the Old El Paso section of Sainsbury's ;-).

I think most American food just sounds strange. Who eats turkey at ... like ... breakfast? I mean, I don't eat meat anyway ... but it still seems weird! Stuff like that. And someone gave me some Hershey's chocolate once and I thought it was ... rank. The same for Peanut Butter Cups. The only things I like the sound of are, yeah, Luna Bars ... and also there seems to be a wider variety of soy-based ice "cream".

Ooh ... what a nice, self-indulgent and interesting thread ;-).

and (this is the worst and most embarrassing part of all) I actually had a measuring cup in my purse and I would spoon the items into it before I put them on my plate.  OMG, I was in so deep.

- At least you can see how ridiculous that was now!

1) I used to wander around in the dark around dinner time, after not eating all day, absolutly starving and I'd feel extremely fatigued and sick but I just kept wandering around a mall/the streets because If I arrived home AFTER dinner I could take it into my room and throw it out.

- I've had odd moments like that, too, even though I'm not anorexic or anything. It must be terrible to have pretty much every day like that! One that sticks in my mind is deliberately missing two trains so I'd get in after my mum had eaten and I could continue with my three-day "water fast" (already really annoyed that I'd messed it up by eating ... a brazil nut ... LOL) so I was there for three hours, freezing cold and feeling faint ... pacing up and down the platform, wanting nothing more than to get on the nice, warm train home which was being announced. I wouldn't even buy a herbal tea (all of 2kcal) from the stand because that would be messing up even more. Crazy times!

Mine is just ... like ... crying and throwing up into stupid things like carrier bags or cereal boxes and, once, a drawer (???!) and trying so hard to be as quiet as possible, but knowing that people could still hear ... and eating so much that I couldn't breathe ... and not eating enough so's my legs wouldn't work for what felt like hours. Lots of memories ... but they all kind of merge into one ... because the cycle I'm (hopefully!) getting out of is so ridiculous and repetitive and tedious.
Fitness Do you judge people exercising? Feb 06 2008

Honestly, I do judge people like that. If I see a skinny person exercising I'll assume they exercise too much and are just unhealthy, if I see an overweight person exercising I'll find it comical ... and if I see a perfectly-proportioned, fit and healthy-looking person exercising I'll "hate" them and think about how superior they must feel. You can't win!

Basically, I'm too insecure to exercise in public myself so I have to make myself feel better ;-). I realise how horrible and stupid it is. You people all sound so ... err ... nice!

I'm just talking about people jogging/running in the street, really, though ... I think that it would be a different story at the gym because ... well, everyone's there to exercise.

Besides, if you want to exercise ... good for you, don't worry what arseholes like me think of you. You're fit and want to remain fit: nothing wrong with that. If you don't think you're better than anyone then there's even less of a dilemma. I mean, worrying about what people think you think of them??? :-)

Welcome to the thread, gennysaurus. You probably won't get much help here - I think we all feel as helpless as you ;-). Maybe writing about it helps you ... who knows?!

All or nothing? That's me. At the moment I've been going between less than 400 and more than 4000. At either extreme, food just isn't enjoyable ... which is sad, because I love food! I know that not eating enough makes binging worse and binging makes not eating enough worse ... but I just can't seem to get out of it.

For Lent I'm giving up sugar - something which almost always triggers a binge for me. That and sandwiches, anyway! Sooo ... fresh start and all.
Vegetarian Protein... Feb 05 2008

If anything 80g is too much. You probably don't need as much protein as you think you do. The difference between getting protein from a veggie diet and protein from a meat-eating diet is that you kind of have to build it up over the day or look at the whole meal rather than just having one piece of very high-protein food. Do I make sense? Anyway, if you eat dairy you've really got nothing to worry about!

Health & Support How should I approach my bulimic friend/roommate? Feb 01 2008

Ultimately, is there anything you can really do about it? She can only help herself - and if she is seeing "people" about it then she's already taking steps in the right direction. You've gotta accept that you're pretty helpless in this.

It's a tricky situation, mostly because everyone's different and it's so ... touchy!

I'm not exactly bulimic, but I know that my flatmates must have heard me throwing up before ... and I would be mortified if they were to mention it - I don't think it would be at all beneficial, either. At the same time, if her health is at risk, everyone turning a blind eye probably ain't great. As a friend, I think it'd be good to let her know that you're aware of what's happening and that you're willing to talk or whatever if she wants, but don't force the issue or "corner her" - mentioning the toilet sounds fine. If you're really concened, then I don't think it would be inappropriate for you to talk to her boyfriend or her family. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that "nagging" should come from family while friends act as normal as possible and sort of ... provide the light relief and gentle support.

Like I said, though ... very tricky ... and don't listen to me! LOL.

I hope you find a solution.

I really hate it when men call me 'sweetheart', 'gorgeous' or 'darlin''. It just makes me feel that they don't take me at all seriously and I'm just quiet, sweet and pathetic! I know they don't mean it like that ... but it's actually made me cry in the past! The same goes for women calling me 'lovey', 'missy' or 'my woman'/'my girl'. Ha, ha. I don't know why, really.

'Babes' I quite like, strangely ... because that makes me feel like they find me attractive. Yeah, I know that isn't the case ;-). 'Hun' coming from anyone is alright, too.

Not eating for six hours wouldn't be the end of the world. You could just bring some fruit and a bar or something if you're worried about being tempted by the vending machines.

I spent a lot of time visiting someone recently and the food in the canteen was awful - all fried and all been sitting around all day ... and all potato! LOL.

I started to binge and then stopped myself. That's got to be a first! Well, rare, anyway. I had a banana, some berries, a lot of chocolate, a dried fruit bar and some raisins - really could've been worse, my intake for today is under 1800, even.

Frozen berries are a great thing to binge on, by the way. I know, the act of binging is horrible whatever you eat, but at 270kcal for 500g you can't massively overeat calorie-wise, you feel more refreshed than ill, they take a long time to eat, they're healthy ... and they're pretty yum.

karliann, if it's any comfort I had 6000 or so a few days ago and only gained 1lb.

Good luck!!!

I don't see what's especially funny about "disturbing the peace" like that ... I mean, in my mind the Net should be a nice place, especially the My Little Pony Forum, I would imagine! I have to admit that the idea of Stalin riding a My Little Pony did bring a smile to my face, though. I think the mod showed quite a bit of humour there ;-).
Health & Support at what age did you become 'diet conscious'? Jan 31 2008

I can remember being very young and thinking that I was fat (I wasn't ... at all) and making all these ridiculous child-like bargains - If I peel this clementine and the skin is all in one then I can make a wish ... and I'd like to be thin, please! Then when I was about 12 I actually did put on a little weight ... and my diaries from that time mention it, which sort of disturbs me! Every year from age 12 to age 16 one of my New Year's resolutions was to loose weight, but I never dieted - I kind of thought that if I wanted it enough it would just happen and never even associated eating too much with putting on wieght ... LOL. I only became "diet-conscious" when I was 17 or 18.

Looking back, some of my friends must have been dieting at about 11 ... which is just ... wrong ... considering none of us were overweight at all. Even younger, actually. I used to go round this girl's house after school a couple of times a week when we were in Year 4 (age 8-9) and the first thing she always did when we got in was weigh herself. I didn't think anything much of it at the time ... but now it just seems craaaaaaaaaaaazy. Scales and soft toys shouldn't go together like that!

Sorry. Too long :-).

Weight Loss Morning Binge- what do I do now? Jan 19 2008

Ice cream has protein, doesn't it? Ha, ha. I agree with everyone else, don't worry about it and definitely try to eat as normally as possible for the rest of the day. If I were you, I wouldn't even try and eat too "light" - soooooooo many times I've binged in the morning, not eaten in the day and then had another binge session just before bed.

I made a healthyish chocolate "cheesecake" thing (dried coconut, brazil nuts and dates for the base, cocoa powder, avocado and date syrup for the chocolate filling and fresh fruit for the topping) ... and I only had a small slice (a first for me! Normally I let myself have sugar [natural or not ...] and then binge like crazy). Isn't food so much more enjoyable when you practice moderation?!

It doesn't bother me at all when people get stuff "wrong" on a forum or e-mail or something. I'm sure I do it alllllll the time (what's wrong with saying 'loose' - is that not right?! LOL! I have no idea) ... and I'm an english student! Why does it even matter? Seriously ...

When big companies make mistakes, now that's kind of annoying.

Would you recommend it?

I'm currently reading ... errr ... Sharon Osbourne's autobiography (hey ... someone gave it to me for Christmas!). I thought it was quite interesting at first, talking about her childhood and experiences working for her father etc. ... but now I'm a bit further in it just seems to be her telling sob stories about how Ozzy's drinking affected her. Getting sick of it! LOL. But maybe it'll pick up again?

I'm also reading The Duchess of Malfi ...

Other than that, I like rooibos, peppermint, lemon and ginger and very rarely blackcurrant. I'm not much of a fan of fruit teas - they always look and smell sooooo much nicer than they actually taste to me!

I have the same problem. I once ate 400g of cashews followed by 200g brazil nuts! The truth is, I think that everyone who likes nuts finds it hard to stop noshing (after all, what harm can just one more little nut do?) They're a good source of healthy oils, so it's best not to give them up completely. I recommend buying them in the shell as they take a lot longer to eat and you can't have more than one at a time (I used to eat them like some people eat popcorn - i.e. in handfuls!). Also, like others've said, count out the amount you're going to eat in advance of actually having them.

One day won't make any real difference. Don't stress.

The Lounge supermarket checkout commentary Jan 11 2008
10:24 (UTC)

Yeah, it's true. I used to love checking up on what people were buying when I worked in a supermarket. My favourites to observe were the underweight, most-likely eating-disordered girls buying light yoghurts and energy drinks, the overweight, middle-aged women buying things like stollen, mini apple pies and focaccia, the homeless buying alcohol and meatballs and the occasional middle-class type (this was a very cheap shop in a deprived area) who only ever seemed to buy olive oil and jars of sun-dried peppers. It used to crack me up how much people conformed to what you would expect! It's horrible and judgemental and I hate the thought of people looking at what I'm buying and smiling to themselves in superiority. It sounds awful, I know ... but ... hey ... checkout work is pretty mind-numbing when you're doing a 10-hour shift with 15 minutes' paid break. I would never comment, though! That's just ... rude(r!).

Well done. I loooooooove that feeling, too. Usually I buy something thinking I'll be able to resist it (I'll just have one biscuit/a small amount of cashews/two squares of dark chocolate a day!!!) and then pig out, but the times I'm strong about it and am able to eat only a little (especially in the afternoon :-P) of something but truly enjoy it I feel great.

Foods How do you treat yourself on your birthday? Jan 11 2008

On my birthday last year I celebrated food-wise by eating fairly normally all day and then having an evening family meal of homemade curry etc., then some fruit and soya ice cream ... and then some (OK, quite a lot!) of my mum's homemade carob, coffee and pecan cake (lovingly made even though she has a deep hatred of vegan cakes - I thought I ought to show my appreciation ;-)). I was quite restrained with the curry, having only a little of each dish and not overdoing it with the rice ... and I never usually eat cake (literally once or twice a year) so I figured that was OK. I was quite pleased! My ideal menu would be much the same as that, I think, but I might skip the ice "cream" and add in a bowl of my favourite (but ooooh sooooo calorific) muesli for breakfast.

It sounds like you've got a good thing going on there - having exactly what you want but planning it out and not going crazy. I hope you're going to have a slice of the cake for breakfast the next day, though. Hah ... maybe I'm just a pig. Happy Birthday :-).

How do you "quote" people on here? Am I just being dumb?

Thank you again :-). Maybe you misunderstood me, but my point was that these people are the same as me - they are human. Only, like you said, they have it much harder than me - compared to these people, I don't care at all about my appearance and it isn't important. And while any trainer or nutritionist is obviously better than none, the programme I was watching said that some people (I think one was Courtney Love??) actually had their trainers move into their house during their weight loss! I mean, I certainly could never afford (or care enough!) to do anything like that. Yet they still can't seem to maintain a constant, healthy weight.

I know I shouldn't pay too much attention to daytime telly or anything shown on E!, anyway!

I've had three days in a row where I haven't massively overeaten now ... so hopefully that's the end of that for at least another few months (well, hopefully EVER, but ... ya know ... got to be realistic). I realised that it was stupid to get so depressed about gaining 12lbs (especially when my BMI was still >21) and not fitting into some clothes. I went out and bought some clothes in a size bigger, got a good night's sleep and instantly felt miles better! LOL.
