I clean, I'm a cleaner....Being a control freak also, there is a twisted fascination with my house being spotless when I'm mad, which is good, because otherwise I wouldn't clean it.Tongue out

I don't get the cleaning impulse very often, but when I do it does have a calming effect. I'll try to keep that in mind and take my frustrations out on my kitchen floor next time. Thanks :)

I refuse to step on the scale this week.... as in I'm 100% ready to throw a classic 3-year-old temper tantrum if anyone even makes me walk past one. I had a terrible week this week... school started so I have a new schedule to get used to, which totally un-hinged me, and my class schedule got messed up and I had to miss one and I pulled a Blanch DuBois and ended up binging the week away and only getting to the gym twice. In retrospect I was a melodramatic fool... but when it was all happening it I was a complete mess. I suffered a control crisis. This is completely my M.O. When I feel that I control every minute of my life, I'm completely happy and am more than capable of working toward my goals... but the second anything changes from the plan I have in my head (even if it's the weather) I implode.

How do you guys deal with stress in your lives? If you're an emotional eater, how do you re-direct that impulse? If you're not, how do you handle the negative energy?

wow arcticmonkey I hope those 4lbs really are gone :) And Happy Ramadan... I don't think it will mess up your metabolism because it's "only" 30 days (goodness knows I couldn't do it!). I think it takes longer than that to have a lasting effect on your metabolism.

to all those whose weight is stagnating: grrr... I'm feeling your frustrations! I had a big drop those first couple of weeks, but I think it's caught up to me and my body is wisening to me. Maybe we should try to break whatever routine we have created since we started and try to "shock" our bodies back into weight loss. I think that I've been working out a bit much and my body feels overly achey and tired so I'm going to trade some cardio for more weight training this week and up my protein. Maybe this will be an R&R maintainance week for me. We'll see...

nbkelly: I'm sorry you're feeling so down about your rate of weightloss. First of all, you are down over 1lb since last week... celebrate that! You have steadily lost weight since the beginning of this challenge, and you know what they say: a slow loss is a more permanent loss. And secondly, I'm with you on the random day-to-day fluctuations of the scale, and I do think that TTOM is a significant culprit. Keep your chin up!

leanne: 3 inches is fantastic! I have to say that as happy as a new low on the scale makes me, nothing beats the feeling of my roomier clothes and the sound of (now) baggy pants swish-swishing all day long :) Congrats!

Last week: 144 lbs.

Loss/Gain (week): 0 lbs

Sorry this is late... it's been a crazy weekend and this shortened work-week has me pulling my hair out already. I'll catch up on the posts and reply when the dust settles. Hope everyone's doing well!

alexanderrob: Cool beans about the spreadsheet and gift certificate. wow on the weightloss! congrats... and I second leanne about pics :)

TGIF!! Except that it's also the last weekend before school starts and I'm totally miserable about it. Not deathly so, but in the "ugh, school" kinda way. On the plus side the campus gym stays open until midnight when school is in session, so less excuses not to make it there :) Here's to hoping all the forthcoming  studying will help keep my hands out of the cookie jar!

My scale hasn't moved either, diva. I'm trying not to think too hard about it since I did predict it this past Monday. Plus, it isn't going up, either... which makes me more confident that I do actually weigh what I weigh (neuroses, anyone?). This has been a pre-TTOM week and I've been exhausted and ravenous... but haven't deviated from my cal/exercise routine. I'll probably be tempted to (over)indulge this weekend, but the Monday weigh-in should keep me on track. Does anyone know if the insane hunger is just a product of hormones or if I should actually up my cals a bit during TTOM?

jamminatorr: I just checked out your pics... you're looking great! I definitely notice a huge difference in your thighs and tummy. Good Job! :)

nbkelly: mmm... that sounds delish. And the recipe doesn't sound unhealthy... especially after your modifications. It's all in the portion size, anyway. Apparently Maine had a greater than expected blueberry season, so I'll be hitting those berries soon myself :)

Go you, sarah! I have NO portion control.... especially when it comes to baked goods. That cake would have been half gone on day one... and I live alone! I'm still in the "let others control my portions for me" faze.

Speaking of which... there's chocolate cake in the boardroom. It's been offered twice and I've refused but I'm seriously watching the clock tick each...and...every...second. I've even tried to rationalize it as dinner. But know I can'tcan'tcan't. Well, it's not that I can't, but that I wont. I'll be so happy when I get to leave in an hour... happy and proud. That's what I keep thinking about. :)

I've just started eating FAGE 0% and I love it (15g of protein, 90 cals, no fat--perfect after-workout snack). It's super thick (thicker than custard) and it tastes sour (it's plain yogurt). So far all the ony way I've had it is with splenda or sugar-free syrup, a drop of coconut extract and nutmeg. Others add fruit, honey, nuts... it's basically a great base for sweet or savory flavors.

Week #3 Mini-Challenge - Why I want to lose weight:

  • to prove that I am a product of my own determination, not my genetics or my past
  • to have more confidence, in myself and around others
  • to finish something significant (to me)
  • to lead by example
  • to be the best me
  • to conquer my demons
  • to stop hiding
  • to never have another New Year's or birthday resolution be "to lose weight"
  • to stop wondering what I would look like if I were smaller
  • to stop being described as "chubby, but cute"

thank you for saying that coach_k! I finished W2D1 yesterday and I think the 7-10 range is about all I'm good for... especially by the last set.

Anyone find themselves touching their biceps more often? I can't stop! I've actually caught myself sitting at my desk at work mid-flex before realizing where I am :P

Question for everyone: what do you do between your sets? The 60 seconds on D1 aren't too bad, but I feel rediculous sitting on my butt for 90-120 seconds (at the gym) on D2 and D3. I tried doing sit-ups but that just exhausted me for the next set... and sitting on my mat staring at the clock for over a minute makes me look psychotic. Any ideas?

I love the sauna! I try to put in 5 minutes after I've cooled down from my work-outs. I generally feel better afterwards and have less soreness the next day. Also, the moist air has been great for my lungs and my breathing.

I use Bene-fiber if I notice my fiber levels are too low. It's 25 cals/"heaping" teaspoon but that gives you 5g of fiber... plus, it's tasteless, and you can add it to anything (oatmeal, soup, water, juice, tea, yogurt, pudding, etc).

This week: 144 lbs.

Last week: 150 lbs.

Loss/Gain (week): -6 lbs

Um. Well... I almost didn't post this because it makes me look like a meth head. To be honest, I did see 147 before last Monday, but I was up again by weigh-in... and this week I was 148 on Sunday but back down today... so I don't believe it's truely 6 lbs... but that's what the scale read. I think that a significant portion of this is the initial drop when people start cutting cals and exercising.... and maybe the benefiber I've encorporated into my diet. Although I'd jumped back onto the wagon before joining this group, I wasn't as consistent as I have been the last two weeks. Like denalou18 and corduroyfirekills3 I think that what I do from here on out will be the real test.

readermoth: Hey, you didn't gain anything! That's a significant acheivement, especially since it's rediculously easy to go over thousands of cals when you're eating fair food (honestly, what does it take... 2 chili dogs?!).

nbkelly: You lost .3 pounds! A loss is a loss is a loss... that's what I say :) I'm glad that this week already looks like it will be inherently successful. Let us know all about the show! (I know diddly about horses, btw)

diva_n_da_making: haha! You should have blamed the sodium in the peanut butter :)

leanne: Holy! That's almost 60lbs from where you are today... You're awesome!!

saxkat13: It's definitely hard to find an over-lap between life, and new lifestyle habits... but it seems as though you made the best of the weekend, and as long as you enjoyed yourself, that's what matters. Good luck on the new week :)

I'd like to second leanne's thank you to alexanderrob for starting this group... everyone is so motivated and supportive... it's wonderful!

leanne21071: It's great to hear you had such a good time... and kept to your calorie range. It's like getting to have your cake and eat it too, minus the bulge :) Good luck on tomorrow's weigh-in!

readermoth: I'm glad I could help! Did you have fun at the Fair? The festival was a blast... did your resolve last?

set-up for tomorrow's weigh-in: Soo.. I went to the festival both days instead of just one... and that was a greater test than my self control was able to handle. The grapes I brought helped a lot on Saturday, though I did eat 8 mini-donuts (instead of one)... ON BOTH DAYS! And I had to try all the free food samples they were giving out (of course... but they were all organic granolas and yogurts, so it wasn't unhealthy food, so much as calorific). I also had an icecream, but I got it in a cup instead of a cone and was only able to get through 1/3 of it before getting sick of it. Today I didn't bring any fruit with me, so I got a veggie wrap with hummus and feta for lunch. Healthy, but it was the size of my head, and I ate it all... I didn't exercise saturday (counted it as a rest day) so I had to today (especially after I entered all I ate into CC and realized I'd gone over 2,000 on both days this weekend). The gym was closed when I got home, so I ran a mile and walked four. I'm a bit disappointed in myself, not because I didn't have fun, but because I saw 144 on the scale this past week, and I sooo much wanted to be able to enter that weight tomorrow. Oh well... 12 hours to a brand new week.

Good luck everyone!

I'm game! I go 5-6 times a week... 70% cardio 30% weights/strength training (I'm just going into week 2 of the 100 push-ups challenge). I can always use new routine ideas or exercise ideas as it's hard not to get stuck in a rut and/or bored.

Isn't that the greatest feeling?! I'm really happy for you... the same thing happened to me yesterday. I had to resist the urge to tape a sign to my butt that read "That's right, I'm back in my skinny jeans!"

I've decided the feeling is so good I'm going to go out and buy a pair a size smaller and pin them to my wall for new motivation :)

here's to hoping that anger/frustration burns extra calories:

My uni's bursar's office line has been busy for half an hour and I'm sitting here, repeatedly hitting the redial button and FLIPPING OUT. I mean... it's called  multiple lines, people! And the reason I need to call them? My *wonderfully competent and organized* school has been taking NINE MONTHS to switch to a new electronic system and HAS FAILED TO DO SO IN TIME FOR THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR. So now I'm juggling 1) the old system, half defunct, 2) the new (incomplete) system and 3) the old-school paper system. This might be able to find some humor in this Dilbert/Kafka situation if it weren't for the fact that each system is giving me a DIFFERENT BILL total.

Seriously, Public University System: I'm working hard for my debt... do something with it. Please!

On today's plus side, though, my boss gave us all a paid half day off... so I get to hate bureaucracy from the comfort of my couch.

omg, I was convinced my gym was pumping chocolate cake air into the lobby a while back... it was terrible!

Soooo... the American Folk Festival is this weekend, which means great music, dancing, crafts and HOMEMADE DONUTS and ICECREAM, a slew of ethnic foods, fresh lemonade and other sources of TORTURE! All of which makes me sad because I just fit into my skinny jeans this morning and I would hate to have to hang them up again come Monday. *sigh* I know better than to expect myself to abstain 100% from festival goodies, so I'm going to be realistic and keep the indulgences to "special" goodies and pass on the "I could get this anytime" goodies. Also, I think that if I watch how much I eat (in addition to what I eat) I should be able to enjoy myself without destroying my current progress. I think I'll also throw some fruit in my bag so I have something to munch on and don't find myself standing in the 10' fried kilbasa line due to dire hunger.

What continues to amaze me about living a "healthy lifestyle" (as opposed to "d**ting") is that enjoying myself and enjoying life is part of it and it's never about depriving yourself until you've lost xlbs so you can "go back to eating like before."

"The craving with go away, but the guilt will stay" - me, when I *think* I could kill for junk food

"If you're questioning yourself, the answer is NO" - can't remember... but it's sooo true (Can I have another cookie? How many calories do you think are in that?)

I second misspriss. I actually find it really hard to be there less than an hour unless all I'm doing is cardio. A typical gym routine for me looks like this:

    • 30-60 minutes of cardio (sometimes all on one machine, sometimes split across three)
    • 10 minutes of stretching post-cardio (I can't walk the next day if I don't)
    • 15-20 minutes of abs (I use a variety of machines... and moving from equipment to equipment and having to adjust it can eat up a lot of time)
    • 15-20 minutes of upper or lower body work (see above)
    • 5-10 minutes in the sauna

    I hope this helps!

thesuperbex: I love working out to techno and dance... I downloaded the soundtracks to all 5 seasons of Queer as Folk and those can keep me going for hours. Also, check out Freezepop (more synthpop than techno, but FUN!)

    Lately I've been listening to:

M.I.A., Goldfrapp, Freezepop, the Fratellis, punk compilations (Burning Ambitions: a History of Punk), the Strokes, Spoon, the Kooks (In & Out), Tricky (Knowle West Boy), the Kills (Midnight Boom), Santogold, and the Kaiser Cheifs.

It's kind of all over the place genre wise... but they all have great fast beats.

How  many calories are you budgeting for this?

For minimal cals if I have a sweet tooth I have

    • a cup of sugar-free jello (10cals per half cup serving)
    • a cup of cantaloup (~50 cals)
    • a bowl of oatmeal with splenda and cinnamon (150 cals for 1/2 c dry)

If I have a craving for something salty I have

    • 6 cups of air-popped corn w/canola spray and salt (or other seasonings) for ~180 cals
    • sliced cucumber and celery w/ salt and pepper (~ 50 cals if I have half a cucumber and 2 large stalks)
    • a can of V8 (70 cals)
