Pregnancy & Parenting Traveling with infants during the holidays help Nov 29 2009

We just took our first flight with our 4 month old daughter.  We flew from California to Mass and we decided to take a red eye on the way there and it was great.  She sucked on her pacifier on the way up, slept the entire flight, and ate on the way down.  The way back we switched our flight to an evening thinking she would sleep the whole way again.  Unfortunately, the flight was delayed for 4 hours leaving at 11:30 pm instead of 7:30 making for an overtired, overstimulated girl.  Waiting in the airport was rough but she slept most of the flight.  I did have my husband with me so he was a big help, I can't imagine doing it on my own.

Pregnancy & Parenting Working moms- how do you find the time to workout? Oct 21 2009

I am working and had a baby 3 months ago too.  I only work from 7 - 2:30 on M,Th, F and 7 - 7:30 on Tuesday and Wednesday so not nearly as damanding of a schedule as yours.  Even though I have time every day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays I am having a hard time getting motivated to run/exercise regularly.  I worked out 4-5 times a week throughout my pregnancy and only gained 22 lbs so I am only 2 - 3 lbs about my pre-pregnancy weight of 120. Even though I am so close I hate my stomach right now!  When I sit down or bend over it feels like it is hanging over my pants :(    I am so tired when I get home from work that I talk myself out of going for a run.  I can't imagine trying to work out with a schedule like yours.  This week I am working on efficiently using my time at home so I can get everything done.  So far I ran on Monday, went for a 3 mile walk during a break at work on Tuesday, I'm giving myself today off and plan to run every day for the rest of the week.  I am hoping by having a good week this will motivate me for future weeks.  Can you find any time during your working hours to squeeze in any exercise?  Hopefully your baby will start sleeping more at night - I am getting up once at 3:30 for a feeding but she is sleeping from 8 - 8 with the one feeding.  Feel free to add me as a friend - we seem to have a lot in common :)

Pregnancy & Parenting How long did it take you to get pregnant after you started trying? Oct 19 2009

I had the paraguard IUD for 3 years before TTC.  I got pregnant 3 months after having it removed so it was pretty quick.  It was a nonhormonal IUD so if you are using the one with hormones it may be different.  I loved the IUD and think it is a great choice for birth control.

Pregnancy & Parenting Curious - How does your baby sleep? Oct 11 2009

Nope, just fussing, not awake yet.  One more thing.  Are you swaddling her?  That has been the only thing that keeps her asleep for more than 15  minutes.  We just switched to swaddleme sleep sack things because no blanket could contain her because she moves so much.  Now she has velcro to contend with and even though she can get a little hand up the top, she doesn't wake up cold with the blanket loose all around her.  and she looks so cute, like a little worm :)

My little one is 12 weeks and she was waking up 2 times a night at that age - bed at 7:30 or 8.  First feeding between 1 and 2 and second feeding between 4:00 and 5:30 and awake at 7ish.  Now we are down to one feeding a night around 3:30 and she gets up around 7.  Do you have a bedtime routine?  We do bath, bottle from daddy (of breastmilk), and bed.  I think it helps but we have been doing it from about 4 weeks old so we would get used to the routine and she has been doing well with sleeping at  night.  Naps are a totally different story.  Oops, there she is now!

Thanks so much for posting this.  I gave my baby tylenol for the first time on Friday after her 2 month immunizations.  Now I'm off to check the bottle to see if it was recalled.

Pregnancy & Parenting Cloth diapering? Sep 21 2009

I'm using the bum genius 3.0.  I've used them since my baby was 2 weeks old (about 7.5lbs) and have been using them for 2 months now.  I really love them.  They are easy to use and save so much money.  I think we have 22 diapers so the initial investment is a lot but I do a load of diapers (just one cycle with hot water and a little detergent) about every other day and they should last until she is out of diapers.  They really are one size fits all.  They are bulkier than disposable diapers but it doesn't seem to get in her way. They use velcro which is really easy but I am a little concerned that it will wear out but so far so good.  I think Fuzzi Bunz are very similar but they use snaps instead of velcro.  We also have the Bum Genius diaper sprayer that attaches to the toilet and it us used to spray off the dirty diapers before washing.  This makes is so easy.

Pregnancy & Parenting Supplementing every other feeding....will my breastmilk be effective? Sep 10 2009

I started pumping at 3 weeks and I don't think I really noticed a significant increase until 4 or 5 weeks so keep it up and your supply should increase.

My daughter is 8 weeks old right now and I am alternating between nursing and pumping.  I was so frustrated for the first month. I also have a slow eater and I felt like she was eating constantly.  I started pumping right after feedings to get whatever was left and also when she got a bottle of expressed milk.  She gets 2 bottles a day - at bedtime and one night feeding.  At first I was getting only a little bit when I pumped (1 - 2 ounces) and I wasn't sure how I was ever going to store enough for a full feeding.  My body totally responded to the extra pumping and started producing more milk and now my freezer is full.  She also doesn't eat as often any more 2-4 hours between feedings during the day and up to 6 hours between feedings at night.  I think she is about 11 or 12 lbs right now (I'll find out at the doctor next week) and was 6lbs 10 oz when born.  It really does get easier.  I start work next week so I will be pumping even more so I hope my milk production stays high.

Congratulations!  It is amazing how quickly the body recovers.  I have those same 5 lbs but I haven't started to really watch  my eating or get back to a regular exercise routine.  My daughter is 6 weeks old and I started pumping at 3 weeks and introduced a bottle then too so DH could help with the night feedings.  I started pumping after the morning feeding and started out with just an ounce.  I kept it up and for the first week I hardly had a surplus and was concerned I wouldn't get enough to store.  after the first week of pumping my supply increased a lot and I started saving 4 oz after the morning feeding and could pump 8 - 10 oz at night when DH fed her the bottle.  One thing I learned is to make sure she finishes one breast before switching to the next and you may not have to switch if you make enough. I was switching too soon and she was filling up on foremilk and not getting enough hindmilk leading to some undesireable digestive changes :) I had an oversupply problem

Pregnancy & Parenting Laying off the Caffeine Aug 12 2009

I also didn't completely cut out caffeine either.  My midwife said a cup a day was fine so I did what bier did - 1/2 caff in the morning and another one in the afternoon if I wanted another cup.   I didn't drink any during weeks 6 - 10 because I couldn't stand the smell of coffee but I resumed the drinking once that passed.

Pregnancy & Parenting Paraguard IUD vs. Mirena IUS Aug 06 2009

I used the Paraguard for 3 years and had it out last July to start trying to conceive.  I was pregnant within 3 months of having it removed.  I had my baby 3 weeks ago and am going to get the Paraguard again in the future.  I loved it.  I didn't want to use anything hormonal because I haven't had the best experiences in the past.  I remember health classes too from high school and they made the IUD seem like such a scary option but my midwife told me that they are the most widely used form of birth control worldwide.  I had slightly heavier periods but no increased cramping.

Pregnancy & Parenting How to take "you're getting huge comments" Jul 14 2009

I was telling a friend yesterday that my fingers get really swollen in the heat now and her response was,"yeah, and I can see you have some cankles too"!!!   I don't think I have cankles, my ankles haven't even been swollen and look pretty slender to me. I don't think she meant it to be mean and I think it's a little funny what people think they can say but that was way worse than the you're getting big comments I have received.

I totally understand where you are coming from.  I am 40+ weeks right now and I started showing early (around 25 weeks) and had my exponential growth in the months that followed.  By 34 weeks I had somewhat maxed out and I haven't gotten significantly bigger but I got plenty of comments from strangers, coworkers, etc.  Things like, "any day now, right?" and "you look like you're going to pop" when I still had 6 weeks left.  You are all belly like me so I think people feel more comfortable making comments about how big your belly is since you haven't gained weight anywhere else. I think it also makes your belly look bigger when it is attached to skinny arms and legs.  You look great and it is great you are keeping up with the exercise.  Even though you have 3.5 weeks to go it doesn't mean that you are going to blow up during this time.  My weight gain slowed way down in the past couple of weeks.  Hang in there.  People mean well and don't always realize how stupid their comments are.  They usually make them to share in your pregnancy.  Just smile and nod.

Pregnancy & Parenting Genes and pregnancy - what do you think? Jul 13 2009

I have a very similar body shape as my mom and I think our pregnancies have been very similar.  We both had very easy pregnancies with no problems.  She gained 15 - 20 lbs and I am just over 20 (at 40 weeks and 3 days) and we carried the baby the same way - all stomach.  She also had quick labor and deliveries (6 and 8 hours for me and my brother) so I am hoping I am the same way too.  I know all pregnancies are different but I like to think there is some genetic aspect of it too.  Not everyone inherits body shape and things like that from their mom but maybe some people have more similarities than others.  But that might be me hoping for quick labor and delivery like my mom.

Pregnancy & Parenting Due in a week --*rant* Jul 09 2009

I feel the same way!  My due date is tomorrow and I've gained about 22-23 lbs and am ready to have this baby!  I've been swimming 3 times a week but that is the only exercise I seem to be able to get myself to do in the past couple of months.  I get tired out exercising on land and I got winded yesterday pushing the vacuum around the house.  Congratulations on a healthy pregnancy and small weight gain and hope the baby comes soon for you!

Pregnancy & Parenting Any cures for pregnancy constipation? Jan 15 2009

This might seem counter intuitive but I read that having a lot of fiber during pregnancy can have negative results resulting in a lot of gas, bloating, and pain.  I am not saying you are not constipated - I definitely was during the first trimester but some of the bloating and pain may be caused by excess gas.

I don't think I have experienced the runner's high either.  I agree with you, jenka, that sometimes I feel great on my run - start to finish, while other days I feel really sluggish and it is a struggle to push myself to keep going.  I do think after the first 10 or 15 minutes I get in a groove and I feel pretty good but not a high.  I have never pushed through the wall either - that is usually the end of my run so maybe that's why I haven't felt it. hmmm....I am now on the quest for the elusive runners high.  I will let you know if I find it.

Oooh!! I want to join too!  I started running about 6 months ago and built up to about a 6 mile run.  I went on vacation for the entire month of June and didn't run at all and now I can barely make it 3 miles - this is still better than when I started.  I want to build back up to 6 and I have a goal of running a 1/2 marathon - I haven't set a date for this.

The one thing I can't run without are my Asics Evolution shoes - I am an overpronator and I love them.  This is the first time I have bought running shoes and I went to a store where they watch you walk and recommend shoes and they were so right!  My feet feel great when I run!
