No need to get off your high horse. Running your first 20 miler is a HUGE achievement--I have very fond memories of my first 20 mile run. Congratulations, and good luck with the rest of your training! |

| Motivation | Pizza - My Nemesis | Apr 23 2009 23:46 (UTC) |

I also have a weakness for pizza (and Chinese food, but that one's not as bad). It's one of the things I look forward to eating at some point every week. But I know what you mean; it can be frustrating when you try to stick to a plan and all of a sudden you stray. At this point, all you can do is write it off and get back to your plan tomorrow. You may experience a temporary bounce back up in weight, but get back to your program and you'll be back to normal within several days. But if you enjoy pizza, maybe you might want to include it as part of your plan. If you are one of those who would rather just indulge in pizza, then compensate for the extra calories by getting in a little extra activity that day, or but cutting back (only) a little bit on your other meals (but not too much, I don't suggest that you starve yourself for this one treat). If you can handle it, indulge sparingly. That way you'll be able to stay within your daily caloric requirements without having to sacrifice elsewhere during the day or week. But I think that it's important to include one or two meals a week where you can allow yourself these treats. Denying yourself these things will only make you unhappy or resentful, which may lead to binging or other eating behaviors that could easily undo all of the work you have been putting in during the week. |

| Fitness | Carbo loading without Calorie Loading? | Jan 31 2009 14:55 (UTC) |

It's really difficult to carbo-load without gaining weight. It is assumed that you will gain some weight during a carbo loading phase, just because you end up storing extra water while you accumulate glycogen (which comes from the extra carbs that you consume). It's only temporary; you should see your weight start to drop again once you've done loading. In terms of foods, I try to keep it simple when I carbo-load: pasta, brown rice, and potatoes are staples for me. Sometimes I'll treat myself to pretzels or bagels. But there's no need to find or rely on fancy stuff to help with loading. |

Considering how hard you have been training this year, I'm not going to give you a "hurrah speech." Perhaps this drop in motivation is your body telling you that you need a break. Enjoy the time off. What might be helpful in getting your "mojo" back is looking back at the past year and evaluating your progress (what you accomplished, where you made improvements, where you didn't live up to expectations) and from there, come up with a plan for next year. |

Congrats on everything you have so far to prepare for you first marathon. In the past twelve months I have completed two marathons and one 50K race, with another marathon coming up in three weeks, so I know how you feel. All of these jitters and concerns are perfectly normally and to be expected. One thing to keep in mind with the forecasted temperature that you posted is that it is the expected HIGH temp, which you will most likely encounter by the time you have completed the race. Try to look for the expected low temp for that morning--the temperature at the time the race starts will be closer to that. My biggest concern for you is figuring out how to stay warm while you wait for the race to begin, as once you start moving, you will definitely warm up. The key point to remember is to wear layers, and if at all possible, consider wearning or buying an inexpensive or old jacket or sleeveless vest as your outermost piece of clothing. If it's something that was extremely inexpensive or something so old that you don't care about, then you can easily ditch it during the race. But given the expected high temp, my guess is that you won't be needing to get rid of it. I can't speak for how to account for Raynaud's disease, but as someone whose hands get cold easily, gloves play a crucial role in my cold weather gear (I wear gloves anytime the temps are lower than 50 degrees). I also make it a point to wear a wool cap, since a lot of our heat escapes through the head. Do whatever it takes to keep your extremities (head, toes, hands/fingers) as warm as possible, while keeping into account the rule that you should dress for conditions 15-20 degrees warmer. One final suggestion is to do a short run outside during the middle of the week (maybe Tuesday or Wednesday) in the clothes that you plan to wear on race day. Please don't wear something on race day that you haven't worn on a previous run. Hopefully the temps on the day of your "dress rehearsal" will be close to what you will encounter next weekend, which will allow you to see whether you dressed warmly enough or not. You can then make adjustments based on how things went that day. The following link will give you a guide to how you should be dressing up. Enter the expected weather conditions, and it gives you some suggestions as to how to dress: http://www.runnersworld.com/cda/whattowear/0,,s6-240-325-330-0-0-0-0-0,00. html Good luck! |

As usual, spirochete is right on the money here. My first pair of running shoes was the Asics Gel Nimbus 9--I loved them. But I couldn't deal with the subsequent models. If you want to stick with the same model that you're used to, definitely look online--I'm pretty sure your preferred model is still out there. |

Congratulations--you are officially a marathoner!! Well done! What you described about your pace through the first half of the race is something I know all too well. It's very normal to find out on race day that your race pace is faster than your training pace; in my first 50K last fall, I felt so good in the first 20 miles of the race that I was averaging a sub 8 pace. Keep in mind that I averaged an 8:21 pace in my first 20 mile run several weeks earlier and that my average pace in the HM at that point was 8:33. After a couple of miles where I started to gradually slow down (8:15 and 8:29), I crashed HARD with my remaining miles ranging from 11 to 17 minutes. So believe me, I know how it feels. In terms of recovery and returning to running, it's all about listening to your body. Please read the following link from Hal Hidgon: http://www.halhigdon.com/postmarathon/zerowee k0.html Again, congratulations and great job!! |

Very odd sighting yesterday--we were driving home yesterday from my sister's and I saw a red/maroon color car in front of me and the license plate said, "JENKA". I took another glance at the plate and saw that the plates were from Georgia. I thought, "Hmm--could it be???" Made me wonder... |

Hi everyone, 8.1 very slow miles today. Getting myself ready for my final 20+ mile run this Sunday (probably be 21 or 22 miles). Hey kscout, good luck to you on your marathon tomorrow. Just remember to pace yourself, and don't allow the excitement of the race to cause you to start running too quickly. Remember to hydrate early and often, and remember to stick to a schedule for your carbohydrate/electrolyte replenishment. With temps climbing from 55 degrees at start time to 75 degrees by finish, remember to take great care out there. I'm looking forward to hearing your report after the race!! Good luck on your 1/2 marathon, manta. Congratulations on your performance in the 1/2 ironman--I'm totally impressed. And good luck on your 5K, jenka. Keep running!! |

Original Post by jenka: No I didn't. We were at 32.75 MTG after jfk's post (1653). Egrabowski's mileage (5.5) dropped us to 27.25 (post 1654). So your 5 miles (post 1655) should have lowered us to 22.25, right?? |

I was just thinking about a lap around the South Pole, ww!! Meanwhile, I quickly drew up a map of a possible route around Australia, and it measures around 8550 miles (more or less)--this is something that we could finish up in four or five months. |

I think that a victory lap around Australia would be fun and something "relatively short-term". I'll be back later to post my mileage for today. |
