Fitness MEN, 18+, 5'10-6'2, WHAT IS an IDEAL WEIGHT OR WHAT IS GOOD WEIGHT? NEED SOME HELP FROM ANYONE WHO KNOWS THE IDEAL WEIGHT! Mar 05 2009

I'm 20, 6'3" and weigh 220 lbs. My BF% is 19% (I just got underwater tested)....I was down to 203 at one point and I still really wasn't happy.

But that's not because the number, it's your composition. You can be 250 and have lean muscle and look great or 200 with no muscle and look horrible. Be concerned with what you look like, not what the scale says.

I now have 4 bike friends that have all gotten tickets >$200 for "rolling" through stop signs. I just wanted to put that out there to possibly make some of you shut your trap.

Not all cyclists are perfect all of the time, some get penalized--no different than cars.

There's a game called bloody knuckles--if you're familiar with it, then it would describe this thread. We consistently take turns punching eachother knuckles-to-knuckles, to the point of blood, but it's just so much fun, you continue despite the pain.

The wider, squishier, and comfier the seat looks, the less comfortable it's actually going to be in the long run.

Same situation. I didn't give up drinking, I either drink light beer or Captain Morgans with Diet Pepsi (I'm 6'3; 220) so it takes a few to get me there too. I stuck in hard during the week, and after a night of drinking, the next day I forced myself to work out, almost no exceptions. Typically I  try to burn as much as I drank--it seems logical to me and is a much better alternative than losing out on college life.

I'm going to live in Italy for 4 months = carbs and wine and a lack of a real gym. I'll let you know how that works out.

Good luck--love the "girls" as extra calories; never thought about it, but so true.

Well, the ride was actually 202 miles, 11:03 on the bike averaging roughly 18.4 mph.

I didn't put my HRM on, but I project that I burned well over 12,000 calories. It was also hot, my computer said 103 degrees at one point; but all-in-all, it was a great experience!

Keep on riding!

Well, since riding on sidewalks is illegal. Trails go nowhere. And shoulders are often full of glass/debris, etc. where do you motorists propose we ride?

I cycle a couple hundred miles a week. I stay as close to the line or on the line at all times. I stop at stop signs, signal, only ride two abrest when in rural areas. To the idiot that said if they were a cop they would only give citations to cyclists, ha, you're a joke. Try giving citations to all the people that pass cyclists on double yellows--you'll be busy for a while. To the OP; congratulations, you've epitimized why all cycists hate you.

As much as you hate cyclists, I hate cars. I honestly don't see how slowing down from 55 mph to 50 mph is going to devestate your life; or heaven forbid, waiting for oncoming traffic to clear.

I can genuinely say, that if I had a gun on my bike, I'd have shot out so many rear windows for all of the jacka$$ drivers on the road.

So drivers: I'm sorry that I'm in better shape, follow the rules of the road, have a quality called patience, and don't emit greenhouse gases.

Fitness Spinning & biking question Jul 11 2008

Undoubtedly. trhawley says what I would say as well.

I ride clipped in on road bike, mountain bike, and spin bike in the off season. You will notice the efficiency immediately.

The way that I explain it to friends is with only using a platform pedal (w/ sneakers) you are only able to push down on the pedal, in essence, only optimizing half of a rotation. While clipped in you push down, but you pull up equally to complete the rotation. For fitness, this creates a more fluid motion and capitalizes on buth your glutes and hamstrings (since you're pushing and pulling).

Shoes range from $60 - $300. A mountain bike shoe would work better for spin because the cleat isn't exposed, that way you don't have to walk funny (whereas a road shoe the cleat sticks out).

99% of gyms will have Shimano SPD cleats.

What about flax seed oil in a pill form? Same effect, or is a milled seed better?

At 5'4 I would guess between a 50 and 52cm. Make sure to try both and don't be afraid to have them make adjustments.

I am also an avid cyclist. This is most definitely feasible. Follow one of the online and 'jc343' training suggestions, you'll be amazed at how quickly you can cover some mileage once you start.

As far as choosing a bike. Go to your local bike shop (LBS) and test ride some for sizing. If you tell me your height I could also do a rough sizing. If the ride is supported and you don't have to carry your tent/sleeping bag then a road bike is the optimal solution.

Depending on your budget, you can get a great aluminum/carbon bike with good components between $800 - $1200. I also have 2 bikes, the full carbon race bike (I love it, I spoiled myself, but I also work at a shop) and a mt. bike. I'm doing a 205 mile in one day ride coming up in July. I rode 180 last week and I'm doing a century (100 miler) on Saturday!

Good luck. Biking is infectious.

About Cannondale. That is very disappointing news. They have had deteriorating innovation over the last few years which is why I believe they're having a downfall.

I'm happy to say the least that I don't own a Prophet of a System Six...

I got in about 180 miles this week on the Specialized Tarmac Pro that I just built up! I love it, the Toupe 143 saddle is taking some getting used to, but I like the bike. Weighs in at 17lbs in a 61cm, pretty epic for me.

Now I'm looking at upgrading my hardtail Rockhopper...I'm looking for either a Stumpjumper or a Santa Cruz, the local trails are great, but I'm not sure I can afford to buy one. I'm going to Italy for 4 months in September, so maybe I should wait.

Loss This Week: 2.8!

As you can see, great week this week, nice to see a 2.8 loss marching towards the sub 200...

3 of my roommates eat 3000-6000 calories a day, they're trying to bulk up and here I am with 1700ish- weekends coming up and you know how that is when you're in college! Always a struggle...

Good job all, it's crazy to think that collectively we've lost the weight of a 225 pound person.

Or check out Craigslist, you can usually get a lot more bike for the money. If you know what you're looking for you can getting an older model frame with better components which is more important than a newer frame say with Sora or Tiagra.

How much do you all eat on an average day?

My BMR is allegedly 2500 ish, I have a difficult time feeling acceptable eating that much--especially on the days I don't work out.

Maybe it's just the conspiracy I've grown up in, eat less, weigh less, but this sub 200 mark is driving me insane. It's been daunting me since September, I was down to 204, back up to 221 when I started this and now back down to 209.

I'm just wondering if I should actually eat 2000+ calories, I've worked out every day this week burning between 600 and 1000 calories according to my HRM.

Thanks!

Great job all...

Busted my bum this week, starting do wonder if I'm getting enough calories or not...I felt like that was superstition, but now I'm starting to question it. Get roughly 2000 a day, sometimes 1700 sometimes more I'm sure.

I'm very excited to hit the sub-200 mark. Haven't been there in a while, that's for sure.

Without being disrespectful to your family I would find a tactful way to dissent from his wishes. At 20 you should be able to go to a co-ed gym if you so please, you obviously have a good head on your shoulders, you're not wearing scant clothing, I don't see any issues except for your Dad's control.

Just my opinion, then again, I don't have a 20 year old daughter, but if I do someday will never restrict her from going to a gym.
Fitness 200km bike ride training tips??? Feb 04 2008

I plan on doing a 204 mile ride in one day coming this summer, for training, I am going to have completed a few Centuries and have prepared to spend at least 10 hours in the saddle.

For a 125 mile (205km) ride you're planning on, I would have completed a 70 to 80 mile ride once or twice before attempting a 125. You will burn much more than 4000-5000 calories if you're riding moderrately, so hydrate and refuel.

I never "eat back" all of the caloreis burned from my workout. If I do feel hungrier from the workout I will feel no guilt in having something small before or after the workout, but I don't see the point in eating back 500 calories that I worked off. Never made sense to me and I've lost 30 pounds.
