Weight Loss 1,000 Calories A Day? May 12 2008
18:21 (UTC)

Original Post by coach_k:

1000 calories per day is too little unless you are under doctor's supervision.  A basic breakdown of why you need at least 1200 calories per day is below.

Your body needs at least 1200 calories per day to survive. Here is a very rough scientific break down provided by a dietician for a  5' 2", 19 year old female weighing approximately 100 pounds, sitting around all day and doing nothing:

-The heart needs 12% of the calories (144 cals)
-The kidney needs 12% of the calories (144 cals)
-The Liver needs 23% of the calories (276 cals)
-The brain needs 23% of the calories (276 cals)
-The skeletal muscle needs 30% of the calories (360 cals)

So, if you are taller or weigh more, you need to set your minimum at more than 1200 calories anyway.

hmmm, this seems interesting. i would really like to get how it works. soooo....  if you say the heart uses 12% of calories, well than it will use 12% of whatever amount of calories it will get....right? so will the heart use 120 cals if a person eats 1000 cals and 360 cals if a person eats 3000 cals? (or will it still use 144 and the rest turns into fat) or does the heart of a 19 yo female, 5'2 and weighing 100 lbs need 144 cals? and it uses that no matter how many cals the girl eats? and other organs are deprived of ebnrgy? then what is the proportion for taller and heavier people? does my heart use 12% of my estimated BMR? or...?

wilti-i love the idea of giving 2 lbs to a person who gained after i'm maintaining. cc says i should reach my goal in march.... i don't entirely believe it but i sure hope for it.

i'm just finishing a box of ice-cream yikes but i'll have period tomorrow or the day after tomorrow and i HAD TO EAT it.

naija - i do an intense yoga workout every other day, some swimming and nothing else much cause it's already winter here. i consume about 1800 cals a day and it's too much. pounds fall off me when i limit myself to 1300 but that is sooooo hard.

cheers to everyone

oh goody celebration day today Tongue out

i think i wanna make one remark about the team-thing. i think it's great to have teams TO SUPPORT each other, but NOT TO COMPARE with each other. i'd rather not want it to turn into a competition kind of thing-which team loses the most weight? so how about we don't write which team lost how many lbs...? what do you think, cause it's such a rainy day today that i can't seem to think straight...

:) hi cherry and all

candles? i have to try that!

well for me the best way not to overgo my cals is to plan something for the evening which does not include eating. like the night before i went to a concert and yesterday i attended a lecture, keeps my mind and hands of food.

also what really prevents cravings for me is exercise and proper food combination and avoiding sweets - the less i have them the less i want them. but exercise is crucial keeps my mood up and probably the level of endorphines and i eat less. my exercise plan is: 3xweek vigorous yoga, 1xweek swimming, and i walk a lot cause i don't have a car

and loving attitude towards myself helps a lot! thinking that i can and deserve to be who i want to and that i want to nourish my body with the food not posion myself.

this evening i'm going for dinner to my best friend's :) lots of cals... :/

WELCOME adictv, araiye and yellow :) :) :) :)

eanoe, i really feel for you, but i know you'll get right through it. in my opinion you should not force your body to eat, casue surgeries are a great shock for the body so i would just let it be.

and cherry, i'm proud to announce that on Wed 11/7 i had 1200 cals and no binging temptations :) i still weigh the same as on our last weigh in though...

cherry thanks for the encouragement :) yeah i know it's not that bad, it's just that, well, you know, i'm working on my attitude towards food, not just the weight and binging due to emotional reasons is a sign of unhealthy attitude towards food, booo BUT i do feel i can get it under control. thanks again *gives flowers*

and yellow i'd say WELCOME. but since it's not me who started the challenge probably the last word doesn't belong to me...

i hope we will soon creat a network of support, casue so far not so many discussion going on here, only ppl posting their stats, which i know is the point, i'm ust sort of talkative. sometimes, lol

have a great day everyone.

HI

well, uuum, i have only a vague idea of what AIM is...but other than that i have a M.A. in performance arts, work as a writer and translator. as i grew older my points of view have changed a lot. and from alternative theatre i progressed to conservative writting and that's where i definitelly am holding my ground now.  i'm your height and also want to lose about 20 lbs, going from 140 to 120 (my dream is 115)

as for healthy eating. yes please! i used to eat very clean through uni but i definitelly slipped back this past year or two. but enough of easy choices and feeling sluggish! it would be great if we supported each other in these efforts, though i mut say i ahve not been doing very well in my weight loss efforts so far Embarassed

Weight Loss a quick blood type diet question... Nov 07 2007

hi! while i can't give you any scientific prove for anything i can say two things: my former employer lost about 50 lbs by following this diet. he was eating CRAZY amounts of food. just as he always used to, he just changed what he ate not how much. he became a freak about this diet and tried to convince all of us who worked together to follow it. when he provided us with the info it turned out i have been basicly following this diet my whole life!!! i am vegetarian and that's what the book recommended for me... anyways he's type 0, i'm type A. let's say we're both following this diet, sort of in my case, and he's lost 50lbs and i'm overweight. BUT he has developed serious health problems with kidneys and something called ketosis becasue he was eating almost only meet whole year long..

i guess that's all i know about this diet

Weight Loss Thin as possible within healthy range to prevent cancer Nov 02 2007
17:55 (UTC)

wow, very interesting as i actually want to lose weight to prevent cancer. my mum died of cancer and so did my uncle. my 2 aunts are still fighting cancer, so this is THE topic for me. all i can say is i've read plenty of books on preventing cancer and yes summing up all of them in one sentence i would say - be as thin as possible within your healthy range and it will prevent cancer. that's the theory and that's what caused me to try to lose weight BUT out of the 4 people in my family only my Mum was overweight and the others were/are really thin so i guess life verifies this theory as not really true...? still being slim is healthy :)

Weight Loss why is eating 1500 cals so damn difficult? Oct 30 2007
10:25 (UTC)
13

... hmm.... thanks... this i really helpful and in theory i know this, but somehow i just can't do it. my typical day right now:

wake up 5.45

coffee

vigorous yoga (burns 400 cals :)) (3xweek) (or swimming on Sundays)

breakfast - fruit or whole wheat bread with honey or light cheese

snack - mocha (can't live without that)

lunch - salad or soup or sauted veggies, sometimes w/eggs or cheese

dinner - whole wheat pasta, sauted veggies, sandwiches

go to bed about 10-11pm

i have too much of everything and of course there are also the crazy chocolate binges and going out for food. it seems i've tried everything from 5 meals to 2 meals, not eating breakfast, not eating dinner, drinking lots of water.... ugh i guess it comes down to strong will i really admire you guys that you succeeded!

hey, I think it's great you turned veggie! i'm going to address only one of your questions, about the vitamins -- if you stay on the vegan diet absolutely, and i mean absolutely, take B12 suplemments. also soy milk and cereal is often fortified in B12, but usualy not enough.

best of luck :)

i love the typos. lol. and it has nothing to do with your general knowledge of English or eduction. but that's not the point.

ok, so don't do any purging or starving!!!! you just need to count your calories and probably change a bit of WHAT you eat. as juma already said type your stats into the calculator on this site and it will tell you how many cals to eat every day, then log everything you eat to see if you're within the limit and make your diet so you are, since it's probably your parents who cook you might want to talk with them about you would like to drop some pounds and you'd like to avoid fattening foods such as hamburgers, chips, pop, ice cream and stuff. hey wasp!

congrats on your success and sticking to it :)

BUT personally i think you should slowly start incorporating complex unprocessed carbs to your diet and lean protein. a diet of fruit and veggies is not sustaianable for a whole life and lacks of important nutrients too. plus it leads to losing muscle mass. it also comes from my experaince that with that kind of diet you will binge on unhealthy things eventually, i mean there are people who are vegan or raw and they are doing fine, so maybe it can be a lifestyle, but well i would just reconsider.

good luck to you!
