What is more important? The way you look or what the scales say?

If the way you look is more important, eat a healthy 1200-1400 cals and go to the gym.  Loosing 5 " and staying the same weight looks better than loosing 3 pounds.  In a gym you can tighten your muscles to loose inches.  More muscle also increases your metabolism to help you loose weight faster.

in 6 weeks you can make significant progress working out.

Good Luck, but remember  you have to spend your whole life in your body - be kind to it.

Add a slimfast type drink as a snack  = chocked full of vitamins and 220 cals.  Esp good for calcium - which looks like you are low on from your sample menu.

There are some good spirulina drink mixes  - just add to milk of choice - or make a yogurt smoothie ( Yogurt of choice + non citrus fruit in blender )  or  kefir.

Good Luck .

I just lost 30"  YEAH .... so my hubby owes me a reward  - going to a tea shop !!

Hummus  - comes in many flavors -  can find in fridge section of health food store
Foods RDA question Aug 29 2007
15:40 (UTC)

See I think the Reverse  --  but it is a guess. Which is why I am asking.

A person needs 1000 Calcium a day. I think that is period regardless of calories.

So If a person on a 2000 cal has a dish with 20% of DV - then for someone eating 1400 calls then it is still 20% of their daily needs.

But if you are looking at fat intake - the rules change.  If it is 15% of a 2000 cal diet,  then it would be 20% of a 1400 cal diet.   Very confusing. Undecided

I fully concur that to be healthy requires a totally different level of nutrients than the RDA minimums.

Love Hummus.  Wonderful spread. Nutrient dense.  I dip baby carrots in it.

Can add lots of flavors to it - will take strong flavors like horseradish and garlic.

Like anything else - just don't eat too much at a time.  I can't imagine sitting down and eating a pound of it an once.

Ok  I am a barbarian today  Surprised

I stopped at MCD and grabbed an egg mc muffin ( 300 cals but 30% DV Calcium and 20% DV iron)  and chocolate chip cookies(100 cals).   I have learned if I skip a meal I eat more than if I have a crummy breakfast.  I am on target for my day as I shoot for 300-400 cals a meal.

Also I have a vegetarian lunch planned.

Foods Canned, Frozen, and Fresh Aug 29 2007

Frozen is often the "freshest" as it goes directly from being picked RIPE into the processing plant.

Fresh food is often pick UNDERRIPE and shipped 2-3 weeks often before reaching the grocery store.  Where do you think apples come from in June - South America.  How long will it take to get through customs, distrubution, and to your grocery store.  Try to buy local and seasonal to get truely fresh food - buy corn, tomatoes, citrus, in summer/  squashes in fall/ brocolli, greens, and apples in winter.

Canned foods has been cooked and use salt as a preservative.  Many vitamins are water soluable and so have already been washed away in processing.

You owe it to your health and your family to fuel up with nutrient dense foods.

Weight Loss Is ANYONE happy with their body? Aug 29 2007

My 9 year old son struts his stuff. His body is him.  He is a little heavy ( 10-15 pounds)  and he says that is okay cause it will give his body the energy to be tall. He is happy to be big enough know to be able to walk our 70 pound dog by himself and be able to control her when she wants to jerk away after a dog or a squirrel or a branch in the wind.

He is at peace with who and what he is ..... I think we can all learn from that.

Have a great day and remember you are a work art in progress ---- enjoy the journey.

Well I am no longer packing my son lunch. He is not eating them or he is eating part of them and eating the school lunch too.

SO I am just making dinners very veg heavy - with a fruit dessert.

There!  HA!  I am smarter than the above average 4th grader.

But sometimes they surprise you - last night I made an Asian stirfry  using yam noodles, lotus roots, processed fish sticks ( not the breaded and fried kind), carrots and zuccini.  I made 2 sauces to be added - a brown beef sauces and a tahini sauce.   I also made bean noodles as a choice too.   IAN LOVED IT !   Did magic tricks with the noodles, teased the dog, and asked for seconds !!!

Sometimes the parents aren't giving the kids enough credit.

I had pomegranite and cherries on the table and told Ian. This is dinner and you can eat as much as you want of what is on the table.  So I set the paramters and he ate from there.

I was under the weather last half of last week - almost TOTM you know.... But I still lost a pound !! Even with eating out and eating tons of carbs....  Not saying you can do that normally - but just seeing that now my awful splurges are less cals than I used to eat on a normal day.   My Splurge days are 1600-1800 cal days as opposed to the over 2500 cal it would have been before I got serious.

Tried something new yesterday - yam noodles - they come in a water filled bag in the Asian dept - not starchy at all - chewier than you would expect. I liked them and even my picky eater ( 9 year old son)  ate them.  I also had lotus root with them.  Lotus root does not have much flavor  and is crunchy sort of like water chestnut but more dense.    Very pretty, nice garnish.

Bean noodles were hard to work with  - very touch to get out of package - I ended up cutting them with scissors to get the size I needed - ( note soak in hot water, do not boil).

Veges are your friend - can eat all you want without gaining.

Have a great week,

My husband is still on the SAD diet.  I often have him go and brush and re brush his teeth because he smells bad or tastes bad to me when we are trying to get frisky.

But I still love him and in fact love him all the more for his acceptance of my choice to change my diet. He has gone over and above the call of duty - often bringing in new recipes or new foods for us to try.  And he is real tolerant of ALL my recipes the tasty one and  er umm the ones that were good learning experiences.

He eats most of his meat during the day outside of the house.

It comes down to the flexibility, the respect, and the acceptance of one another.

I will not tell him he MUST become vegetarian -- but I will encourage him to eat more fruits and veg and join me in some meatless meals because of his health issues.

I recommend getting a good detox suppliment to help.

http://www.detoxreviews.com/ Has alot of information comparing different programs.  Be sure to drink lots and lots of water.

A detox can feel pretty miserable - especially if it is your first deep detox ( I felt like I had the flu for 3 days).   But afterward you feel much better.

http://chetday.com/symptoms.html best article I ever read about detox - but don't sign up for any newsletters/free offers from this site  cause you will never get off of them.

I use psyllium husks as a regular fiber suppliment.  Avoid casacara sagrada- too hard (scratchy) for intestinal lining.

Also important to come out slowly - carefully reintroduce solids.

When I go home I will get for you the name of what I have used in the past.

I use Natures Secret - In bright yellow boxes - often comes with informational marketing CD's.  This haas worked well for me - used their system twice.
Vegetarian why vegetarians should not eat eggs!!! Aug 15 2007

Umm I have a question about an earlier post ....

"And there are many vegetables that have protein,  you do not have to eat eggs that have come from cruelty raised chickens.     Keep eating eggs, but try to find ones not raised cruelty.  www.weightlossforall.com/protein-vegetable.ht m has a list of vegetables that have protein.  "

This website refers to the neccessity of pairing vegs to get a complete  essential amino acids in a given meal.

I thought that had been debunked and was no true.

The challenge with eggs is that so many foods are made using eggs in the recipe. I really don't understand how to substitute for eggs in recipes or how to know when I should use X vs Y vs Z egg substitute.

I have more energy. I feel more in control.

I get ill to my stomach being near meat or eggs cooking.

I had pizza Sunday for the first time in weeks and did not enjoy it. AT ALL.  Sat like a rock in my gut. Not worth it.  I am working on my cheese tooth and decreasing my diary. ( Cow milk is for baby cows not humans)

My son is trying new foods - cause otherwise he would not be eating. We just discover purple yams - very different from yellow yams.  Having fun trying new foods and new recipes.

And bbnomo, I agree with the benefits of a fully functional digestive system  - in and OUT.  : )  My husband and son suffer much less from constipation now. ( They are still on the SAD diet but it is now more really unhappy diet )
Vegetarian caffeine Aug 15 2007

I am with Roadguru.  You cut down to about half of your high volume. Then QUIT! Then do a hard core juice detox with slowly adding foods back in  - have broths for a day or two. You have to get the chemical out of your body.

Then DO NOT BUY Caffeine any more. IF you don't buy it, you can;t poision yourself.  I now drink Lacroix instead - cold, in cans, and fizzy.

I went to have pizza as a reward yesterday -- YUCH. Was not the heaven sent food I remembered.  Good for you. Takes effort to stand yup to your family.   Celebratory eating is a bad social habit America has.

I am going to a birthday Thursday at a STeakhouse -- I am planning on having a salad and a baked potato with fat free ranch dressing.

Socially - After dating hundreds of guys... yes really... I found the world's best husband. We have been together since 1991 and I have never regretted it. I wish everyone could find their perfect match also.

Personally - I am smart and artistic. A definite "character".

Physically- I have beautiful expressive eyes which shift from blue to green with golden flecks.

Financially - we have a comma in our savings account. Not a big one but it is there.  We have no credit card debt.

Name:   Jellikal - Jellikal Cats come out at night

Starting Weight (on joining)  e.g. 320 - Aug  2007

Highest EVER:   331 is the highest I know - but that was after I had started loosing

Mini-Goal Weight:  277 by 11/18/07 - contest at work

ULTIMATE Goal Weight:   180 - pre baby weight - I have this sexy black leather skirt that I want to go out in.

Plan:  weigh everything, measure everything.  An ounce of veggies is bigger than you think and an ounce of cheese is smaller.

Don't eat out ! If you do, get a salad ( w/o cheese & croutons)  and carry your own dressing.  Restaurants will buy what is least expensive and tastes the best - ie lots of fat.  The Cottage cheese on the salad bar will not be the no-fat kind you have at home.

Exercise is good - inches come of faster than pounds often. Working with a personal trainer twice a week. Joined a Yoga class. Just bought an exercise bike for the house.

No eating infront of TV.  Be aware of what you put in your mouth.

To fight the 3:00 tired and want chocolate binge - I have a SLimfast chocolate drink. Work great and gives me enough energy to go home and cook a healthy meal.

I have also begun shifting to a vegetarian lifestyle ( started in Jan). I still eat diary and  some poultry( rarely at family events) and fish ( about 1 a week or two) as well as using eggs in recipes.

My whole family is in this with me - mainly cause if I bought little debbies for the house I would eat half the box.  My son is watching his portions - he even read on the back of the pretzel bag how many were  in a serving and was counting them out and putting them in a bowl -- vs old days of sitting in front of TV and eating straight out of the bag.

He likes those little single serving cereal boxes ( the ones you use to go camping) - so I explained that he needs about 16 cereal boxes of food a day (1600-1800 cals).  So we talk about cereal boxes in Mcdonald's Happy meals and in pizza.  We sat down together and looked over the nutritional reports for fast food until we found one we agreed on that was close by.  Not ideal  but steps in the right direction.  HE gets a kids meal with fruit and I get a diet coke and bowl of fruit.

Hubby is training to be a chef and is enjoying trying the new recipes I bring home.

Look forward to walking on the long road with Y'all.
