Foods Low-cal chocolate fixes? Aug 16 2008

The Hershey's 60 cal sticks, especially the ones with caramel in the middle and the extra dark chocolate 60% cacao (not the special dark one).  Yummy and really satisfying.

But from what you describe, your "friend" is not qualified to tell you whether or not you need to loose weight and to pass unnecessary judgement on you.

And hey, if you don't understand why she reacted as she did or if you had set her off, it's your right (and maybe even your obligation if you want to have a true, open, honest relationship with her) to ask her what's bothering her.  If you don't collectively communicate about what's bugging you then it will be very difficult to have a strong relationship with her that's based on much of anything (meaning = a friendship worth the effort with someone who you value as your friend and vice versa).  Gotta keep those lines of communication open -- it's the best way to make a strong friendship!

And sometimes, it's just not a friendship anymore and it's hard, but then you have to have your "light bulb" moment and realize it's not and move on!  I've had something similar happen to me in the past and it was years before I finally woke up and thought to myself, "now why am i trying to worry about being friends with someone who's so mean?"  And I realized that my reasons deep down (we've "been friends" so long, we're "high school friends", etc.), pale in comparison to the fact that she just wasn't nice or supportive and it wasn't a two-way friendship.

Best of luck and definitely take the time to think things through from a different perspective and really reflect on why you're friends with this person.

Good luck
Foods What is your favorite cereal? Aug 04 2008

Not sure I have a true favorite, but here's some that I like:

Kashi Cinnamon Harvest (love it with blueberries on top that are in season for us right now!)

Quaker Corn Bran (can't find it at every store, but it's a cereal I remember having as a child and still like today -- great fiber content, but only thing i don't like is the artificial coloring)

Quaker Oat squares (a little high in sugar and calories, but great flavor and nice texture)

"homegrown" raisin bran with bran flakes and raisins (cuts a bit of the sugar from the regular brand)

we must be cosmically connected, i just ate a slew of peanut butter newman-0's (generally the same as oreos)!

Hey, let's just stop now, close the door on today and start fresh tomorrow with good choices (and no newman-os or oreos) tomorrow!

It's just one day, it's just one late night snack.  No reason to throw away anything else this week by punishing ourselves for this indiscretion.

And note to self -- do not keep oreos around and available for miscellaneous grazing =)

Oh yeah, and make sure to do my scheduled exercise as normal tomorrow.
Fitness This Is The Half I Struggle With Sometimes ... Any Suggestions? Aug 04 2008

Second the suggestion to walk/run :-)

Do you have a dvd player or a vcr?  One of the best ways to do some exercise around the house on the cheap is to pick up one of the multitude of exercise dvds out there.  Usually you can find some available for checkout at the local library, so it won't cost you anything unless you want to buy your own copies.  And if you do, most exercise dvds aren't too expensive, anyway (or hit some garage sales in the last bits of summer!).

Or since it sounds like you like music, just turn on some of your favs and dance around!

Good luck and hang in there!

Which is the tae bo workout you're using?  That may factor in as well since some are harder than others if you're just starting out...

Love tae bo!  Started back into doing it (again) about a year and a half ago and what a difference it's made sticking with it over that time!

Best of luck and most of all make sure to smile and have some fun with it! :-)

Agree with the other comments -- hang in there you're doing great!

Fluctuations are completely normal....if you haven't been with this that long, you may need to keep tracking and weighing for a while before you figure out your general patterns.  For instance, mid-cycle, I sometimes inexplicably go up 3-4 lbs (I'm guessing this is around ovulation or something?!?!?), and TOM can really screw things up, too, sometimes I'll be up 3-6 pounds that week, too.  Generally after I have a "higher" day of calories, I can be up several pounds just from that one meal, especially if there's a lot of sodium.  One of my friends' weight always jumps up two days after she has a "big calorie" day.

So, there's lots of things that can be causing the scale to be up -- likely it's not "real" and is just fluid retention or undigested food or whatever.  Hang in there, the scale will catch up someday!!
Foods When was the last time you ate Circus Peanuts? Jul 29 2008

That's funny -- i just had circus peanuts earlier this evening!  ugh, too much sugar.  i like the first one, but after a couple, too much sugar and a stomachache!  I get weird cravings for them every now and then.  Glad to hear I'm not the only one who randomly thinks of them! :-)

Something that's always hard for me (related to the earlier post on how sometimes seeing people who look bad ordering the bad food) is when you see thin, non-overweight people stuffing their face with the unhealthy food.

Usually my method is to think past just weight alone to the really poor nutritional content of the food and the longer term health I'll be able to enjoy by avoiding those foods (trans fats, etc.).  Sometimes the people who eat those foods don't externally look heavy or whatever, but there are more drawbacks to eating that junk than just being heavy that you can focus on!

Doing alright today...even in the midst of lots of work stress which is usually a pretty strong trigger for me.  I've done well, and I'm right where I wanted to be for the day.  Just need to keep it up until bedtime!

Did pretty well today, but at the moment I'm really wanting to finish off some kettle bake bbq chips.....not hungry, just like how they taste.  I'm posting here to keep my fingers busy and the bag full :-).

Other than the present moment, today went well.  Around 6pm while making dinner I kind of started binge behavior (mindlessly snacking while prepping dinner), but I did stop myself and then adjusted the calories/portion in dinner to even things out.

No BBQ baked chips tonight!!!!

How's everyone doing!?!?!  Post your thoughts, just don't reach for those extra snacks :-)  Let's all do good til it's time to go to bed!!
The Lounge I have an interview tomorrow... Jul 22 2008

It can be helpful to research interview questions online beforehand (particularly those specific to what your field is), if you'd like to feel more prepared.  You don't want to sound like you've rehearsed and memorized your answer, but sometimes it can help with the nerves when the questions are familiar to you.  Sometimes practicing in a mirror or even with a friend can give you some added boost as well.

Overall, review the job posting again and ask yourself what things would be important to you if you were making the hiring decision and think about how you'll be able to sell the interviewer about what a good fit you'll be.

And don't forget that the interview process is a two-way street...yes, they're trying to figure out if you're right for the position, but it's also your opportunity to figure out if the position/company is a good fit for you as well.  Sometimes taking that perspective can help take the edge off your nerves when you approach it from the perspective that this is an information gathering opportunity for you as well!

Best of luck!

to replace (or limit) the oil, you could replace all or part of it with unsweetened applesauce.  I've tried that with different recipes and it works pretty well.  You could also try some mashed ripe banana.  I've tried honey instead of sugar a couple times - definitely not as sweet, but it works.  Not sure on the wheat flour amounts, tho.

I'm in, too!

Step one of addressing the issue is recognizing that there's a problematic behavior we want to address.  Step 2 is tomorrow where we all commit to making a change for the better and for our health!  We can do this!

Rock on everyone!

Good point.  I'll try a day like that to see if it shakes up that old metabolism a bit.  It has been quite a long time that I've been at this and have made tweaks here and there as I've gone, sounds like that would be a good way to tweak things again!

Thanks!

For a peanut butter substitue you could try:

PB2 http://www.bellplantation.com

Better Than Peanut Butter http://www.send2press.com/newswire/2006-02-02 23-002.shtml

Both are pretty good -- PB2 is less in calories, but BTPB is sweeter (I like the reduced sodium version).
