| Oh I did find it a bit of a pain to cut in half. And I pulled the seeds out before baking but it was all worth the effort in my opinion. I might try the baking whole method next time. | |||

| I liked it quite well, wonderful alternative to pasta...didn't so much remind me of spaghetti but the taste was actually quite good and I thought it paired very well with spaghetti sauce and parm, made for a lovely low cal meal. | |||

| I missed a reply....sorry about that. Kinda all over malibu2008, Most of my shopping is done at Kroger Meijer and Super Wal-mart...and of Course Aldi's Which is a low cost food store. Some products are most likely regional, while others probably appear in grocery stores nation wide at different costs. I've been slacking on the new food finds lately but Couscous is my newest---I love the stuff! http://www.neareast.com/ |

| My youngest who is 11 has problems with her cycle. The pill is used to balance hormones not just prevent pregnancy. A lot of women are on the pill for that reason. And yes you should be eating at least 2000 calories if not more due to your activity level. You are in fact growing, your body is changing and you should expect some weight fluctuations for the next few years. Even in a fully-grown woman, weight goes up and down depending on TTOM, water retention, hormonal changes and various other reasons. Like not getting enough fiber, therefore not having regular bowel movements. The three pounds is not a big deal and will proably come off on it’s own even if you continue to eat 2000+ calories. And even if it does not...you are growing...and thats all it is. |

| Foods | Does fat keep you full longer? | Jun 20 2008 23:06 (UTC) |

| Speaking from personal experience here, yes I think you need a little fat in your diet. I was eating a VERY low fat diet for a while there and found myself basically carving food. Nothing specific but it was like I couldn’t get enough to eat. Though I wouldn’t actually classify it as ‘hunger’ more of a really intense carving that was next to impossible to ignore, for me anyway. Then someone asked if I was getting enough fat, and I started to check out my numbers. I was getting almost none. I added in a bit and bam, with in two days the carvings vanished and it was suddenly easy to stick to my daily calorie allotment again. | |||

| Take baby steps, switch to diet soda and buy those very small bags of chips if you must have them. Work those into your daily calorie count. I find the quickest way to blow a healthy lifestyle change is to suddenly eliminate ALL the foods you used to eat. The goal here is to achieve a healthy balance of foods, one that provides all the nutrients you need in a day while not leaving you with the feeling of being utterly deprived.
For me it was gradual, I started by counting calories and fiber---I was looking for alternatives to some of the junk I used to eat. Eventually I started looking for better alternatives to the alternatives lol. At first I traded in big bags of chips for those 30-cent bags, then light popcorn, and eventually air popped popcorn. I traded full fat ice cream, for light, then fat free…and finally fudge pops. I have treats almost daily but I know what’s lower cal/fat and I tend to chose those treats more often than not. I started out with light dressing moved down to fat free. I tried tons of different products and foods finding items that worked for my palate. Some things I only bought once, some are now staples in my house. The first step is to start changing the foods in your cupboards and refrigerator. now I’m not one to say toss all the junk food, since that’s cash in the trash! But don’t buy them on your next trip to the grocery store. Or buy the best alternatives that you can. It helps to really explore the grocery store, read labels, and try new foods. Some things you will like some things you won’t. I’m not a food purist, I eat artificial sweetener, and pre-packaged products but I have noticed that after a year of healthy eating, I tend to eat wayyy more fresh fruits and veggies. I reach for water more than Splenda sweetened cool-aid these days, and fat free items more than low fat. In fact, I was eating too much food in general because I’d cut too much fat from my diet and that made me hungry ALL the time. Once I realized the problem and added back in some healthy fats I was back to normal. Some ideas for your food cart... (1.)Fit and Active Yogurt about 60 Calories (Made with Splenda) (2.)Laughing Cow light Cheese about 35 Calories a triangle (3.)Cool-Aid (Yes you heard me right) Just make with two Splenda cool-aid Packets (Makes lovely Tea as well---just use the flavor YOUR choice) (4.)Sugar Free Jell-o about 10 Calories (5.)Sugar Free Pudding Cups about 60 Calories (6.)Fudge Pops about 40 Calories (7.) | Foods | Splenda? | Jun 10 2008 19:06 (UTC) |

| I use Splenda, I have for a couple of years now. They claim it is different than other artificial sweeteners, but I notice that people tend to lump it in with the rest. Personally I don’t have a clue weather it is bad for you or not---mainly because if the truth were to be told it will be YEARS before they find out anything for sure.
As for the animals they have tested it on…I would point out they are feed LARGE quantities of the stuff. Far more than a human would naturally consume in a day—or even a month! Many foods if eaten in high quantities like this are bad for you---so I would say everything in moderation. With this said, I consume a fair amount of Splenda daily. I add it to oatmeal, strawberries, frozen berries, cool-aid, tea. I even eat pudding and other products made with it. I have never noticed an increase of appetite after eating it or any extra cravings. Nor have I noticed any other side effects. I personally find the product quite helpful in dieting. The only time I’ve ever had any cravings that affected my daily calorie goal was when I cut out too much fat from my diet. It does have some calories though, just in case you didn’t know. 6 calories a tablespoon, 96 calories a cup---yes, I also bake with it. |

| Weight Loss | fostering a healthy lifestyle or screwing up my kids? | Jun 10 2008 18:42 (UTC) |

| I guess I should explain why I think labeling any food as “bad” isn’t a healthy idea when it comes to kids. At school people will bring in treats, there will be pizza parties, ice-cream parties, birthday parties and later in life when she’s at the age to participate in such events she shouldn’t have to feel that she’s doing something bad (Or taking something into her body that less than ideal) by participating in these events.
It’s funny how kids think. I remember a health teacher convincing me around fifth grade that a veggie pizza was VERY healthy because it contained bread, cheese and vegetables. Nowhere in this explanation did he explain portion sizes or daily calorie needs---at my kids school they still don’t. Also I remember thinking a diet was when you ate as little food as was possible because that’s what it seemed like the adults around me did when they “dieted” Also my mom made comments that had me thinking, milk, turkey breast and cheese were things you could eat as much as you wanted of because they were ‘healthy’ foods…everything in moderation was never taught in my house. |

| I think both things are fine. Kids get on the scale at the doctor's office, doing so at home is no big deal. Look at it this way, a scale is a measure of health not weight and so long as you only say positive things about it, I don't think she will become obsessed at this age. Once she starts school other girls may impart some unhealthy ideas in her head. I saw this happening with my own daughters as early as second grade. So you might want to lay down some foundation before that happens, explain to her the difference between eating fruits and veggies and say…Oreos. If she was my daughter I would tell her that to be healthy you have to eat a lot of the good things because they give her (And everyone else) the vitamins and minerals that her body needs to grow and be healthy (I would stress that healthy is a good thing---not thin) and that eating this way only leaves a little room for treats like ice-cream, Oreos, pizza, whatever. I would never say that a particular food is “bad” because that might create a problem later in life.
Teaching a child serving sizes and balance can only be a good thing in a society where we see a big mac, super sized fries and drink as a normal lunch |
