English and German. But as they say in Germany, "Man lernt nie aus." You're never finished learning... which I believe is especially true of languages :) |

The bad news is I've already seen both of those, but the good news is you have really good taste! I really have to agree with you that Seven Pounds was absolutely phenomenal. |

Sweet deal, I'm going to have to try making my own seitan. I live in the South, so (sadly) it's hard to find cheap health foods, and it's probably the top reason I haven't gone vegan yet. |

Based on these replies, it's clearly possible. Buuuut, my question is whether it's economically feasible for many people? I feel like sources of large amounts of protein in a vegan diet (seitan, tofu, hemp protein powder, etc.) are far more expensive than the foods that most vegetarians eat for protein (such as eggs and cottage cheese). |

I'm a big fan of mixing liquor with diet drinks. You can do vodka and Sprite Sero (really good with flavored vodka... my fave is Smirnoff watermelon vodka with Sprite Zero) or vodka and Crystal Light. Vodka with soda water and a twist of lemon or lime is good, and so is whiskey/bourbon and Diet Coke. These drinks usually have 100-110 cals. But beware, there is research suggesting that consuming alcohol and sugar substitutes may get you drunk faster. |

I'm relieved to know that I'm not the only one who does this. I also don't have an ED, but I also can't say that I have a healthy relationship with food. I'm honestly jealous of my friends who can eat something and not think about how many calories were in it. |

Feminism isn't making women more self-centered. It has merely helped them realize that they have a self around which they can choose to be centered. "Feminism," despite its reputation as a radical cause, is actually just the simple belief that women are equal to men and have value beyond their reproductive capabilities and status as caregivers. My mother definitely taught me (unconsciously, I believe) that I can do whatever I want and be whatever I want -- but at the end of the day, I would still have to come home to cook and clean while my husband sits in "his chair" and watches TV. That's certainly not the life I want, and I'm going to be sure when I enter a relationship that this is clear. A man can fold a towel or scrub a pan just as well as I can, and I believe that both partners should share household responsibilities, especially if both are working. |

The only time I've ever come close was once when I was out at a bar and went way over my limit. After a session of toilet-hugging, my friends decided I needed some bread so they took me to a bakery. In my blindly drunken state I thought I was buying one of those rolls with tomato and cheese on it, but it was actually salami and cheese. I spit it out as soon as I realized, but my friends haven't stopped making fun of my "slip up," which they interpret as my deep, subconscious desire to eat meat, lol. |

I almost always get queasy and nauseous after I take my multi (I take One-A-Day brand, too). I throw up sometimes as well, especially if I'm in a hurry and only eat an apple or a banana. I'm not sure why it's like this, but my mom says she has the same reaction. If it is your vitamin making you sick, I suggest taking your vitamin with lots of food. Taking it later in the day after you have been up for a while and eaten a couple of meals helps, too. |

| Vegetarian | Low Carb Vegetarian? | Jun 29 2009 00:24 (UTC) |

I'm not currently doing a low carb vegetarian diet, but I've definitely considered it. I feel like I pump my body full of so many carbs, and even if they're good for me, I'm still not getting enough fat and probably not enough protein every day. I'm thinking I should cut back on the carbs and introduce more sources of fat and protein. So I'm curious about your vegetarian version of low-carb dieting. How does it work? Do you feel satisfied and healthy on it?

| The Lounge | difference between men and women...this "wonders" me | Jun 23 2009 23:47 (UTC) |

I would attribute this phenomenon to the fact that everywhere you look -- from TV to movies to magazines and even news anchors -- almost all the women in the public eye in America are thin and beautiful. If a woman doesn't fit the profile of feminine perfection, then she often plays a supporting or minor role. The message we end up getting here, whether we realize it or not, is that in our culture, a woman's worth lies in her appearance. I guess that's one of the vestiges of earlier centuries, when a woman's main goal in life was to attract a husband (or else be a burden to society). I'm inclined to think that it's slowly changing now that women are making more of an impact in business, education, government, etc. |

| Weight Loss | Why are so many people aiming for a very low BMI? | Jun 05 2009 02:21 (UTC) |
11 |
According to the chapter about eating disorders in my college "abnormal psychology" textbook, in a study in which pictures of women of all sizes and weights were shown to men (and vice versa), the results were dismaying. A majority of the men considered the women most attractive whose BMIs were in the low part of the healthy range -- or even below that, dipping into unhealthy numbers. Yet when women were asked about the photos of men, they preferred the ones who fit squarely in the middle of the healthy BMI range. I can't attest to the sample size of participants or randomization of selection, but for whatever reason, it seems that most men (or at least many of them) find too-skinny women attractive, and maybe that's why certain women strive to reach a low BMI rather than a solidly healthy one. I blame the media for tampering with our perception of beauty and ability to guage healthiness, but that's just me. |

Apparently, caffeine reduces blood circulation. This indirectly contributes to cellulite formation by promoting the storage of waste and toxins in the body. This is just something I read online from a random website, so you might want to do more research. |

| Foods | Finding Filling low calorie Snacks | Jan 15 2009 05:37 (UTC) |

A really tasty, low-cal yet filling snack I discovered today is cottage cheese with veggies. It's best if you take a 1/2 cup of fat-free cottage cheese, add some ground ginger, cinnamon and a bit of sweetener (Stevia or Splenda are best) and dip carrots in it. It's amazing, full of satiating protein, and it will only cost you about 100 calories! |

Thanks for all your helpful tips! I'm going to try eating more hearty, protein-filled foods. As a lazy college student, I usually only get around to eating what's easiest to prepare or what's at the cafeteria... which ends up being salads and peanut butter sandwiches most of the time. I'm thinking I could throw some more eggs and beans in the mix. Thanks guys! |

Yeah, since I'm concerned about my bone density like you, karozel (and not exactly breaking baseball bats with my shins like you, eddiepotter), but at the same time don't want to ruin my joins by overdoing it with high-impact activities, I tend to switch back and forth between the two. My only thing is that it seems like the elliptical doesn't burn as many calories or provide as thorough of a workout (even though the two are supposedly comparable on calorie burnage). Basically, the elliptical doesn't kick my tail hard enough. |

| Young Calorie Counters | are you overweight if your legs touch when you walk? | Jul 09 2008 17:30 (UTC) |

Yeah, I agree. You don't have to be overweight for your thighs to touch. My best friend and I call the non-touching thigh phenomenon, "thighlessness," and that's our goal. But the more we strive toward that goal, the more I realize that "thighlessness" has a lot to do with how wide your hips (and therefore your legs) are set apart. |

That's so exciting! I'm leaving for Germany on February 3rd to study for a semester too, and I'm basically in the same boat as you. I'm so worried that I'll pack on the pounds because of all the potatoes and bread they eat over there, not to mention beer and Haribo gummi bears! Here's my plan to not come back with extra baggage: This may seem a bit strange, but I've actually been successfully experimenting with vegetarianism lately, so I think I'll continue it over there. That'll cut out a lot of unnecessary fat calories and keep me on a healthier track (who needs all that schnitzel and wurst?). Meat isn't that important to me though, so I don't feel it's a big loss. That may be too extreme for you to want to consider, but it might be worth a thought. As for exercise, my program tragically doesn't have a gym, and it'll be way too cold for me to run outside for the first few months (I'm just not that hardcore), so I plan to walk as much as possible and do plenty of what I call floor exercises, workout moves you can do without a machine (crunches, squats, push-ups, etc.). That should keep me fairly toned until it warms up enough for me to take a daily run in a park.
