Being mad at your kids...to the level of alienating someone they care about will serve ONLY to push your kids away. His parents should realize this. If they were smart - they would talk to Ali....and ask her how she could possibly allow someone she loves to make such an incredible sacrifice (maybe they dont know whats really going on, maybe the bigger sacrifice would be to stay, maybe he doesnt even WANT to go to grad school and Ali is just an excuse). His parents could convey their knowledge/experience in relationships - that true love helps you to find the road that is in your lovers best interest (and therefore in YOUR best interest too!).

Kyle, if he has good reasons for making his decision - should talk to his parents in a mature way....and indicate that while he understands their perspective, he will not allow Ali to be alienated. And that he hopes they will change their mind soon, because their presence in his life is extremely important.

Coming from a place of love and concern can ALSO mean coming from a compassionate place instead of an angry one.

People can be so quick to place blame and be reactionary :(

Since we are no where near capable of fully understanding what causes cravings, how intensity varies from person to person, etc - it seems 100% unreasonable to say men do/dont experience cravings of the same intensity women do during TOTM. (sure we have some ideas, but the brain is faaaaaaaaar more complex than many doctors or the press seem to indicate in articles, etc)

Having said that, I think certain foods are harder for people to control themselves with. Maybe based on childhood comfort food associations, current blood sugar levels, and who knows what else!

Maybe you and your wife could settle on only keeping a pint (your fav flavor) 'hidden' with a hands off policy? Or maybe you could just cart yourself to 7-11 when you can afford the indulgence.

Personally - I have binge issues and simply cant keep things like ice cream in the house. Doesnt mean I lack self-control. It just means I know the best way to utilize my self-control :)

Oh and my fav snacks :)

Sweet:
Luna Bars - I am soooo seriously addicted to these. They are lunacrack as far as Im concerned! At 180 cals they are closer to a meal replacement than a 'snack'. But I dont like any 'bars' that arent just candy bars, yet Luna Bars taste soooo yummy to me, are 70% organic, low glycemin, 10g protein, tons of B vitamins, etc! Fav flavs are Nutz over Chocolate, CookiesnCream, Chocolate Pecan Pie and Peanutbutter Cookie.

Salty: hmm, I no healthy suggestions...only horrible ones...so Ill keep those to myself, hehe.

Hopefully your dr/nurses have answered all your questions to alleviate any concerns stemming from the unknown, and I presume (esp at your age) you did get a 2nd opinion before agreeing to such a major procedure...

Having said that, a very dear friend of mine just had the same procedure last Tuesday. She is 74, was up and moving around the same day, was sent home on Friday, and is doing extremely well.

Im sending healing thoughts of a speedy recovery your way :)

Hey there - welcome to CC!

Our stats are super similar! Im 29, 5'6, highest weight was 240 and for a couple years after Id hover around 155-165. Just this June I decided to get rid of the extra weight....and since June 12 Ive gone from 170+ to 147. Main goal is to get to 135 by end of Sept! :)

Weekend are my weakness too! BUT recently Ive been doing way better. Making a weekend eating plan, sticking to it, none of that eating maint cal crap, working out, etc.

Im going to add you as a friend. Feel free to add me back. Ive found that creating a profile, and journaling really helps to keep me motivated on the weekends. Joining the Challenges works well too.

Cheers,
Christy

Hmm...well I should hopefully meet my major goal of 135 by Sept 29. It would be my lowest weight ever, and over 100 lbs lost from my highest point.

I wont know until then, but I expect I will keep trying to lose weight...while focusing more on adding muscle Oct - December. By mid-Decimber Im going to want to stop dieting and shit into maint so Im ready for snowboarding season (cant WAIT to be lighter on my board!!!).
Weight Loss Day Off? Aug 13 2007
23:53 (UTC)

Cheat days work VERY poorly for me. If for example, I eat at maint calories one day....I do more damage to my weeks weight loss than just the bottom line impact is to my week's deficit.

I think this happens for a couple reasons, though I am purely speculating! I tend to binge also, so often when I would allow myself that cheat day @ maint calories...I would choose foods I knew I could binge on and still stay at that calorie range. Bad for two reasons: a) feeds into my binge cycle b) messes up my digestion and I dont feel like Im burning calories at the baseline metabolism for a couple days....maybe because too much energy is spent on digestion, dont really know

What I have found works MUCH better, is to allow myself one craving every 7-10 days. For example, on Friday I reallly wanted a cinnamon swirl. I waited until today, made sure my deficit wasnt too terribly impacted, and balanced my diet out so I wasnt terribly carb-loaded (leading to glycemic drop later and the urge to binge).

Eek, that sounds ouchy.

Be careful with the smoothies....they can be more sorbet than fruit! Id suggest adding a good organic yogurt (live active cultures of course), maybe oatmeal if you arent feeling full (good source of fiber while still being 'soft'.

Feel better!
Health & Support Back Injury Aug 13 2007

Hi there - sorry to hear about your recent back pain...Ive been living with a totally messed up back for almost a decade, so I have a few tips for you...but PLEASE talk to your doctor first :)

- streching will help. pain is cyclical. you are in pain, muscles tense, causing more pain, causing more tension.
- massage may help. specifically with the injury you describe, I would suggest seeing if you can track down a massage therapist that practices 'jones technique'. Ive had great success with that...plus it helps with the pain cycle too.
- accupuncture may help. ive tried several practicioners, some were of no use...one was a miracle worker. no clue how/why, but it helped a great deal.
- eat well and drink enough water. sounds obvious but discs in your back are largely made of water. some foods (like dairy) seem to make my back more inflamed.
- posture. oh how this helps! it helps even with the immediate term. if you are in bad sciatic pain, try this. lay on your bed, belly/face down. let your feet just slightly hang off the edge (from ankles below), that helps alleviate the pressure off your spine. square your hips (wiggle them until you feel they are aligned properly and one isnt shifted to the right/up/down/etc. square your shoulders. gently lay your head to whichever side is most comfortable. after 20 mins my back is usually much happier (no pressure, proper alignment, and circulation isnt inhibited.
- shoes. im banned from wearing heels! though i still do. wear comfortable, well supported shoes...makes a big difference.

be careful not to exercise too much. swimming is the best, as it is virtually NO impact. if you walk, make sure to do it on as forgiving of a surface as possible (grass > concrete).

H&M sizes do tend to run a little small, and they are pretty freakin cheap, quality mostly matches the cost. They do have some higher priced items, and Ive found those to be of a better quality.

Just pay attention to the specific garmet, make sure stiching looks good, etc. Sometimes 2 shirts in the same size, cut, color will have 1 made much better than the other. Just how it goes with products made in mass...

Im attracted to all colors, weights, heights, etc. Although my weight has changed with 20-30 lbs over the last 5 years, Ive been on a pretty healthy track (since I lost most of the weight, 100lbs 5+ years ago). So, I would find it difficult to date someone who was so overweight it comprimised our ability to DO activities (such as just walking around SF).

As for penis size. Ive learned after chatting with many women - it is more about compatibility than an absolute statement. Women with very small lengths from opening to cervix have to be careful if they date a 9incher, hehe. Conversely, women with a naturally longer length from opening to cervix are often unsatisfied with smaller sized men.

For me, under 5in is difficult to work with at all...I just cant feel much penetration and Im a bit disappointed...though I do find those guys put in more effort which matters. Over 9 is also hard to work with unless the guy has serious skill, otherwise its just totally painful.

Hi everyone :)

Some good news to report! We sent a goal to coco for the month, and mine was to take 3 new classes at my gym. Took my third one yesterday and LOVED it. Im going to start going every Tues/Thur.

As for yesterday's positive challenge - my motivational song (to kick my butt to class) was Talib Kweli's African Dream. The first part of the song goes:

'If you can talk you can sing, if you can walk you can dance...thats an old African proverb from Zimbabwe'. Reminded me that I was capable, and to just go have fun!

Does motivate me during workouts though, thinking of all the new snowboarding tricks Ill be able to do this year. Hehehe

Im a diver too..You should be a bit concerned, here are some links and guidelines:

From: http://www.scuba-doc.com/exerdcs.html

All strenuous activities for about four hours prior to scuba diving will increase micronuclei, thereby increasing venous gas emboli. Musculoskeletal activity will definitely increase the number of tissue micronuclei. That is an experimental fact. These micronuclei will persist for about two to five hours ? again an experimental fact. There are no studies that show clearly what happens to these bubbles when they are compressed by a dive.

It is thought that if one were to put four restful hours between exercise and diving and six between diving and exercise, a diver should be in good shape in terms of absent bubbles. That is probably sufficient for non-decompression dives.

A web site that has some diagrams and explains bubble growth can be found at:

Hi everyone :) Glad to see some activity on the thread!

This challenge has really been helping me in a couple ways.
- I feel more motivated to squeeze in workouts (every day this week, sometimes am and pm!).
- I feel more apt (or even enabled) to try new things, heading to Hip Hip Dance Class tonight for the first time!!
- And foodwise, I feel more in control during moments of weakness. Last night I had a planned indulgence of a a happy hour drink - even had cals set aside for food when I got home. But after eating the food I had allotted I was still realllllly wanting to eat more (stupid alcohol). Instead of going for a slice of pizza, some chips, or some ice cream (mmm drunk food). Instead I made some organic oatmeal, added half a small banana and a pinch of brown sugar and half a tbsp of nutella. Very filling, WAY better than junk food, satisfied my craving without wreaking havoc on my cals, and because it wasnt crap food I felt great this morning and did a quick workout before heading to the office.

Love reading the updates, keep em coming!

How do these things work anyway? I get that you can tell it your info and that it monitors heart activity. But doing activity x and activity y, even if at the same heart rate, burns different #s of calories...right?

Hmm I totally understand that the YMCA cant help her. And honestly, she will find a way to workout if she wants to.

Since this sounds so very, very extreme. I would almost suggest calling the Department of Family Services in your area, if you know her name or other info, to report her case. They usually take on cases for elderly folks who are unable to care for themselves...but should respond to anyone over 18 if they have physical or mental disabilities. Better than doing nothing.

WHO IS COVERED UNDER ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES?
The program serves vulnerable adults which means any person eighteen (18) years of age or older who is unable to manage and take care of himself or his property without assistance as a result of advanced age or physical or mental disability.

I think its a great idea.

However - it would probably be best if you could think of non-food related rewards! Like maybe a small piece of clothing, buying a new book you want, getting a massage.

And I noticed you said you ate 1250 and still worked out - Im really bad at 'eating back' the cals I exercise off...but try to make sure I do eat them back enough to make 1200. :)

I call myself a 'greedy little monkey' if Im overeating...but I would NEVER make comments about someone else's eating habits. Probably because I am oversensitive about my own eating habits.

If you can, try to realize she isnt directing it AT you and just let it go. If it really does bother you, then pull her aside and tell her that its not a huge deal but you would personally appreciate it if she could be more sensitive. :)
