| Maintaining | How did you decide you were happy at your current weight? | Jul 19 2008 06:21 (UTC) |

| Hey anaxandra! I was in the same place as you about 4 months ago... i liked having the goal of losing weight and i was scared to gain it back without still having goals to lose! I suggest you check out the book intuitive eating.... it really helped me start listening to my body and stop counting calories! I also started setting goals like running a 5K instead of weight-related goals and setting other random goals like working to improve my spanish! If you can find other things to focus on and start listening to your body's cues on the food front I think you will be all set! It is scary at first to let go of the counting and trust yourself, but believe me, your body is smarter than you think and its MUCH smarter than computers and calculators! Just don't freak out if you are a little hungrier one day.... it could be that you had a lighter day without knowing it a few days back or it could even out the next day. Not every day will be "perfect".... but things always even out over time!
Best of luck to you and feel free to message me if you ever want to chat or have questions about anything! |

| Two comments-
1) I think the trick gi-jane is to surround yourself with those healthier foods! Set a bowl of fruit on your kitchen table instead of the bowl of candy in the family room! Stock up on fresh veggies and fruits and get rid of all the processed stuff! 2) You guys should check out the book INTUITIVE EATING... its all about listening to your body's cues and it helped my stop being obsessive about calorie counting! I'm back now only because I want to track my health and keep track of certain nutritional things but it really helped me learn about myself, my brain, and my body! |

| Maintaining | I need a hug:( | Jul 19 2008 06:09 (UTC) |
|
| Hi girls... I think you have already received some excellent advice from others on here and I probably don't have much to add on that front... but I just wanted to reach out and give you a big hug!!!!!
I know sometimes you just need that.... I am sure you are both beautiful young girls with so many wonderful characteristics and attributes. Boarding school will be a fantastic experience... and you CAN have a balance! I used to be in the same boat as you- way too compulsive and obsessive about everything related to exercise and diet. I ended up talking to a psychologist just a few times to sort everything out in my head and it really helped a ton! Well after that I went back the other direction and back to eating whatever I wanted... it was a step I needed to go through and looking back it was good for me, but i realized that I really wasn't feeling as well or as healthy as I used to when I started eating certain junky stuff again! So now I've started to find the balance and I've realized the truth- eating healthily should be about making yourself feel better, stronger, and more confident, not about only losing weight! When I eat healthy fruits and vegetables and stay away from chowing down on processed foods I actually FEEL better inside, not because I am doing the "right thing" or "being good", but because I am actually nourishing my body and taking care of myself! Anyway... that was a long little blurb but maybe something in it will strike something in your mind and heart! Best of luck to you in everything... and here is a HUGE hug and a BIG smile for you =D |

| Jumping in! I totally understand. I'm trying to get down to 110-113 right now just from 115 and its very very very hard. I've decided though to stop focusing on the weight and numbers and set a goal more geared to health and fitness... For example- nail my triples in dance and run a 10 K in April!
Hopefully this will simply motivate me to keep moving and burn more calories! Just fyi- I started at 125 and was never in the "unhealthy/overweight" range... it is possible to lose those "vanity pounds" as some call them but you MUST MUST MUST go about it in a healthy manner and take it slow and steady... I lost them at less than 0.5 lb a week but it worked and I've kept healthy! Good luck you guys! We can do it!!!! |

| Well, I don't think this will really help you out that much but I'm basically your twin haha (minus the college thing... I'm still on pins and needles waiting to get in!!! AHHHHHH!)
But I am actually heading in the same direction as Julia I think... I have yet to become regular and only have about 3 a year. I did a bunch of bloodwork and tests for my doctor to double check and she says everything is normal, I'm just late getting adjusted. Ah well... I'm classically late everywhere in my life... might as well be late jumping on this bandwagon as well hehehe. Anyway, if you've checked with your doctor, you're getting the correct nutrients, and you're eating enough (your diet looks great to me) then you could just be like me... healthy but late! haha I know it doesn't help explain much , but hopefully it will make you feel a little better! =) |

| Foods | Cottage Cheese mix-in's and "eat with's"?? | Jan 13 2008 02:03 (UTC) |
11 |
| Personally, I've always been absolutely disgusted by cottage cheese with fruit (personal preferance... I know many many many people LOVE the combo!) so I prefer to keep things savory.
My favorite afternoon snack in the WORLD after a long school day is scrambled eggs (usually 1/2 cup egg beaters). I scramble them and then add in 1/2 a cup of cottage cheese right on top after I take them off. Add some pepper on top too! Or sometimes as a specail thing to mix it up I'll throw in some leftover crumbled up turkey bacon... DELICIOUS! |

| Weight Loss | Bigger breakfast= less afternoon/evening hunger? | Jan 12 2008 03:15 (UTC) |

| I would definitely give the slightly bigger/more protein-full breakfast a shot!
I've been on here for about 6 months and am very very close to my goal now. I got stuck for a while a month and a half or so and started trying this strategy- like you I was worried at first that it would just increase my total calories because I wouldn't compensate during the rest of the day but it really did keep me full! I've found that if I eat an amped up breakfast, a small snack of fruit and a decent lunch with a good amount of protein and some complex carbs I don't even need a snack immediately after school! (I used to be RAVENOUS when I came home!) Give it a shot- I'd suggest some hearty oatmeal made with milk for calcium and protein or my favorite- scrambled eggs with cottage cheese mixed in at the end (and even a crumbled piece of turkey bacon if my brother cooks some... YUMMMMMMM!) |

| Weight Loss | What if you're not hungry? | Jan 08 2008 02:21 (UTC) |
9 |
| I would not ever ever force yourself to eat when you are not hungry. Someday you will most likely want to stop counting every single calorie and you will have to go more by what your body feels it needs and what feels right for you.
Start getting into the habit of listening more to your body and less to the numbers. This does mean, however, that if tomorrow you are slightly hungrier than usual you will eat 1400 calories instead! It will balance out- I guarantee you will have a "hungrier day" hahaha but I recommend following your body, not the numbers! Just make sure you don't eat too too little! |

| WOW! I love this post! I think I have always felt this way, I've just never been able to articulate it quite like this!
Although, as some have mentioned, taking the hunger to the extreme just makes everything bad. But waiting to eat when you actually are hungry, not just bored, upset, etc. makes it taste SO much better! Thanks peacelove. =) |

Michelle I have to tell you how sincerely impressed I am with your willpower! As people have said... I don't know what it is about them but oreos tend to have some sort of magnetic force just saying EAT ME EAT ME... JUST ONE... and then another... and then another... hahaha Props for eating 3! You're great motivation to keep it all in moderation! =) |

| Weight Loss | Have I got this right ? Please help. | Dec 14 2007 21:41 (UTC) |

| Not quite there... although you are close.
If you normally burn 2100 calories and are aiming for a deficit of 500 calories... and you burn 200 on a run... then you should consume 1800 calories that day. This accounts for the 200 deficit from your run and 300 calories from food for a total of 500 calorie deficit. If you only consume 1500 calories AND you run, your deficit for the day (assuming again you burn 2100) is 800 calories (600 for the food, 200 extra for the run). Hope this helps! Best of luck!!! |

The ones I have at my house are the typical size candy cane that would immediately come to your mind in simple good old-fashioned peppermint... they are 55 calories each. |

MY RESOLUTIONS: 1) Love my body. Every single day, no matter what I did or how I am feeling. 2) Eat more fruits and vegetables. 3) Cut down on the junk. My body doesn't like it or need it! 4) Continue to dance and try to increase my other exercise. 5) DRINK WATER! I've been lagging on this lately... Time to drink up! 6) Not step on a scale until December 1 and then again until January 1. It's just a number anyways! 7) Keep up with my work at school. No time for lagging now! WOW! | tanyamoniq has the PERFECT solution to the "clean your plate" mentality. first of all, serve MUCH smaller portions. even try to go for 2/3 or 1/2 of what you think you are hungry for... eat that then wait a while and if you are still hungry get seconds! this way you are cleaning your plate... but cleaning a much smaller amount. I've sometimes found that I'm not even hungry after my first go around. and the idea that it all ends up waste in the end is perfect- you are either wasting it by throwing it out or wasting it by putting it in your body when you don't need fuel. EITHER WAY it is waste- so which way would you rather choose?
You can totally do this.. you have come a long way already! Don't worry about those few pounds... if you are consistent with your lifestyle changes you can reach ANY reasonable goal! Keep it up girl! We are all rooting for you. |

| Foods | Darn candy corn! | Oct 11 2007 20:19 (UTC) |

| Ahhhh candy corn. As I type this, I'm trying to resist the urge to go eat a few from the bowl in the living room! Yet another downfall of living with parents who don't care about nutrition and two teenage brothers who eat entire frozen pizzas as an after school snack and yet stay at 125 pounds and 6 feet! Silly teenage boys! Its not fair haha.
Everyone talks about the freshman wight gain in college... but I'll actually think I'll lose some weight just because of stuff like this! If I did all the grocery shopping I would have to mkae myself not buy things like CANDY CORN and then I wouldn't have it around to mindlessly eat. I got off on a slight tangent. Sorry! But candy corn is addictive... which is silly since its just sugar. Actually, perhaps that is why! |

| Motivation | That last 10 lbs. Who wants to help make that happen together? | Oct 10 2007 20:28 (UTC) |
2 |
| I do the exact same thing! Gum and bottles of water are the only thing that help... or going on a quick walk or jog. I tend to eat in order to procrastinate, so now when I reach for food, especially in the afternoon, I make sure to ask myself if I'm really hungry or just want a break. If I want a break I go for a run... it kills two birds with one stone!
Good luck with the last 10... we are in similar places... I'm almost to my last 10! I want to get down to 115 eventually and I'm around 126 right now... |

| caroline124 I'm no expert, but I do know a thing or two about nutrition and science. Eating a slightly larger amount of calories will actually increase your metabolism as your body will work to process that food. Although you may experience a slight temporary gain then, if you cut back again the next day, your body will still be set to burn the higher number of calories... and will therefore burn off more than you consume that day. It is all very complicated... the only key is to find what works for your body! |
