You're right. About the MSG anyway. (I think salt does have a smell) MSG on the other hand has no smell or taste and yet enhances the food experience.  Very interesting.

Sensa does claim to be 'MSG Free', but it's not required to be FDA approved.

For me, I think skepticism wins. My next salad will be sprinkle free. :)

So, this may be a stupid question, but I've spent some time researching Sensa the past few days and one thing keeps coming to mind...why do you actually have to eat the crystals?? If its all about smell, it seems to me you should just be able to open up whatever container its in, and take a few whiffs while you eat. They supposedly have no taste or nutritional value anyway.

Ive tried to find an answer to this question but to no avail. Anyone have any ideas?

Nothing! Its Christmas day! ...and you should do the same, especially with a stress fracture. A day (or a month) off might be good for that.

Pungygirl I've read a few posts of yours now, and what i've read scares me. To put it bluntly, you are sick.
This site does offer help and advice from lots of people who have solid personal experience in different areas, but you need a professional.
Go get some help.

On another note, has anyone ever seen the Band of Brothers mini series?
Its about the troops in germany, and one of the episodes shows when they discover the concentration camps... the woman in the pic reminds me of all of the people they had playing the roles of the jewish prisoners.  I wonder if they used actual anorexic people for the scenes...
Both images make me sad.

ive got the same issue.  ive always thought it was odd.  i dont crave sweets ever.  i crave meat.  lunchmeat, steak, tuna... if i could eat a meatloaf for breakfast i would be in heaven.  and cottage cheese is also one of my faves.  to me its the perfect snack.  its so weird, but hey it could be worse :)
Fitness short women, 4'11 to 5'3, do you find it easy to build muscle Sep 17 2007

i find it really easy to build muscle.  i really dont mind it since i like the athletic look much better than the "thin" look but there is one odd thing that kinda bugs me... the more i run the bigger my trap muscles get.  i find it so strange, you'd think they would be the least used muscles during that kind of activity. i'm not saying i turn into a no-neck linebacker or anything, but for a chick, they are some pretty nice sized traps, lol.

legs are the first to build though.  ive always had it made up in my mind that its becuase if they are going to grow the only way they have to go is out.  there are no long and lean muscles in this 5'2" body, haha :)

if thats the way you are, i say embrace it!  i consider it a gift that i can lift for only two or three weeks and get visual results.  yeah yeah, i know im supposed to BE healthy, but if i already look it then who has to know?

I heard about this thing awhile ago, and usually I dont buy into stuff but anything that madonna uses im gonna at least take a look at, ha.
The research that I gathered brought me to two conclusions:

1- It probably works, the science  behind it looks solid and it has been used in pro sports and rehab training for awhile now.  Seemed like a good deal until...
2- The one Madonna uses is like $10,000.  Yeah.  Further research concluded that the cheaper ones (soloflex) are cheaper for a reason, they dont work as well (if at all).  Something to do with the rate and intensity of vibration, that just cant be accomplished in a machine that costs only $300.  Still, I doubt it has to cost $10,000. Either way, trying to own one is not worth it, and trying to find one to use is pretty hard.

But hey, if I did find a gym with one of the 10g monsters in it,  I would give it a shot.

This might be an odd question but, is it loud gigi1033?

Fitness Over Train? Sep 14 2007

hmm, I dont know where you "heard" this and I am certainly not an  expert but I do have my own theory that refutes this :)
To me, lots of working out means that you are burning a ton of calories.  If you don't eat enough to fuel the work outs, your blood sugar probably drops.  Most people get cranky/irritable/tired with low blood sugar.  (I am the queen of low blood sugar mood swings, haha).  So, you might feel overtrained, but in reality you may just not be eating enough for our body (and mind) to keep balance.  This all goes back to the over-analyzed subject of starvation mode and how much your body needs minimum daily.  I'm not gonna get into that though, there are a million other posts where ya can read all about it :)

I think really being overtrained is more physical, such as joint and muscle pain, and thats when you really need to give it a rest. Being tired and cranky probably has more to do with how much youve slept and how much you've eaten.  (anyone who wants to comment, go ahead, cuz like i said I am no expert!)

In general think that 25-30mins 3-4 times a week is almost a minimum reccomendation for cardio.  Unless you push yourself too hard and start feeling physically beat up,  I really dont think you have to worry about overtraining... and if you get crabby, eat! :)

This could be the beginning of something great, lol.  Thank you!!

Fitness about treadmills Sep 14 2007

I've been thinking the exact same thing, getting a treadmil to hold me over for the winter months!  I live in Chicago, and while it usually doesn't get to 20 below, It does get pretty nasty.   My main reason though is that the gyms here cost $80+ per month.  In snowy weather my motivation to go anywhere goes way down, so I think by buying a treadmil, my money (and my time) will be better spent.  Besides, for six months of gym time, I'd end up paying the same amount anyway (for a treadmil in the price range you're talking about).

I think I am going to go the hardly used/coat rack treadmill route and see whats out there.  It seems you can get a good deal on a much better treadmil than if you were to buy one that was $500 retail to begin with.  Just be careful to check the brand and do some research on the model they are trying to sell to see how old it really is first.  They could be selling a cheap-o brand and trying to pass it off as much better/newer than it really is.
I've been keeping my eye on cragslist.com.... not sure what is out there, or where things might be listed for someone in Quebec though :-/   Good luck!

Does anyone ever think its odd that people go to mcdonalds and order a big mac, large fries, and then get DIET coke?  Like thats gonna make a difference... hahaha

Oh and I am laughing at myself becuase I am one of those people....  Although, I have to say I dont choose diet coke becuase of the 1 cal per serving, I pick it becuase I cant stand the taste of other non-diet sodas.  Yucky, too sugary :P  I havent been in over a year, but very time I have gone there and done this, I can't help but think it must look ridiculous :)

Weight Loss Counting when you eat out Sep 14 2007
16:27 (UTC)
hey thats a great site coach k!  kinda scary to go back and look at stuff you might have eaten in the past though.... oh cheesecake factory :(  (its a good thing i am not a regular customer, haha).

shoodaddy i have often wondered the same thing, especially when it comes to italian food...  yumm.   i usually just try to stick to the stuff that sounds healthy and then i dont worry about it.  lots of places have little "heart healthy" symbols they stick next to their healthiest dishes.  when it comes to finer dining, portions are usually much smaller so i dont worry about that too much either. i only eat out maybe once every two or three weeks, and i think that as long a you arent eating out every night it wont throw your body off by that much if you dont know the exact cals.  when it comes to what they are cooking in, just be sure to tell them to leave off the butter, and pick stuff that is grilled.  anything with breading on it for me is a def. no-no, you know they are frying that crap in a tub full of oil :)

and hey, theres always salad (dressing on the side)!

I sort of have a target outfit, I just don't own it yet, haha.  I am going to treat myself to a brand new outfit (or maybe a few) when I lose 10 lbs...  until then I am not allowing myself to shop at all.  Not even for shoes. And yes, its killing me :)
Fitness I'm looking for stoppers for my outside bike, to convert it into a stationary one??... Sep 12 2007

Yep, a bike trainer is what you are looking for.  Most trainers are like $150-$350 depending on the kind you get (there are three, fluid, magnetic and wind). The ones at walmart are probably wind trainers, they are always the cheapest kind, and there is mainly one reason for that...   wind trainers are loud as frick.  If noise is an issue for you I'd stay away from them, but if not and you can find one that isnt all plastic, then more power to ya :)  I personally have a fluid trainer, which are usually the most expensive kind.  However I found one at colorado cyclist for about $230, which is a great deal.  I dont know much about the magnetic kind except that I didnt like the way they felt... you might want to go to a bike shop and try some out yourself by the way :)

Heres the website I ordered mine from just in case (the blackburn trakstand fluid trainer)   good luck! :

hey how about getting up early and working out before work... before the soreness hits ya :)  with all that heavy lifting im sure you dont need to add in that much excersize, so maybe just a nice morning walk would make you feel better?  Im working on doing the same thing myself, harder than it sounds haha, but once you're in the routine it will be worth it!
Weight Loss What motivates u to work out? Sep 10 2007

Ive got the same issue :)  especially the time problem, even if i mange to force myself to work out, time goes by SO slowly and sometimes I puss out and stop.  TV doesnt help at all... music almost makes it worse because instead of keeping track of time with a clock, I'm measuring it by the number of songs I can make it through and it sure makes songs seem a lot longer than they are, lol.  I enjoy lifting much more than cardio, because you can sort of do it slowly and at your own pace.  Maybe you could try that?  Otherwise, when you figure it out let me know, i could use some motivation too :)

From what i've heard around here, your loss is pretty normal for someone just starting out, especially if you are pretty overweight (but you didnt post any stats so I dont know!)
I dont think it's anything to worry about. In fact, it will probably slow down by a lot in the next few weeks, so what you should be concerned with is keeping motivated!  And congrats btw, I wish I could shed 10lbs in two weeks.... sigh :)

Fitness is there a way to target love handels when exersizing?? Sep 05 2007
01:55 (UTC)
nope.
there is no such thing as spot reduction.  you need to lose weight overall to get rid of the handles :)

there are some toning things you can do to shape your waist. one of my faves for the handles involves using a free weight.  you take a weight, i usually go with about 20lbs, and hold it in your hand with your am at your side.  your other arm is up, with hand behind your head.  bend over at the waist, to the side that the weight is on.  then slowly contract the obliques and stand up again.  be careful when you do these though, if you bend too far its easy to pull your obliques and the muscles in your ribs (ow).  just do it really slowly and controlled.

but once again, if you dont lose fat overall, you wont see the results of toning anyway!

Weight Loss im proud of not looking older anymore Sep 04 2007

It's funny, I think i've always thought that skinnier people look older.  It seems like  sagging skin/wrinkles pop up sooner in thinner people, my less than scientific reason being the people with more padding have enough to fill it out :)

Although at 14 and 64, I'm probably way off.  14 is still too young to show any signs of aging so being thinner probably does make you look younger. In the long run, maintaining a healthy lifestyle/weight is probably going to make you look much better too.

I guess I think about people from mid twenties to mid thirties when stuff starts to go downhill, lol.  Whenever I see friends or family in that age range lose some weight it seems to make them look older.   Don't get me wrong though, I'd still rather be a little bit skinnier :)  I could use the aging effect anyway, I'm 22 and people constantly mistake me for someone who's slightly older than 16.   People always say that I'll enjoy that when I get older, but come on, could I please get into an R rated movie without being carded just once, please? And forget buying wine... haha.

it might have been you didn't get enough sleep, that you only dropped 1lb this week.  sleep is a big factor in weight loss!  when i stay up late doing work or what not, my weight stays the same, sometimes goes up.  the weeks i get a good amount of zzz's are the ones i see results in.  unless you are seriously bored with your routine, and it might cause you to quit working out, then don't worry so much about it and keep on truckin... just try to get to bed at a decent hour (i know its not always possible, but you can try;)
