Health & Support Low carb diet and arthritis/auto-immune disease? Jul 14 2009

Thanks clairelane! This is good information. Interestingly, eggplant and tomatoes have become staples in my diet and the article lists them as possibly linked to inflammation. And I have been eating a fair amount of processed foods like chicken sausage & turkey bacon, convincing myself that it's good for me. Oh well. . .

I take a fish oil suppliment because unfortunately for me I really, REALLY despise any kind of seafood. And walnuts. But I will cut back on the red meat and up my fruit intake & see what happens.

Keeping a journal to log food vs pain is an excellent idea. I will definitely do that.

Thanks for all of the ideas!

Health & Support Extremely Painful Menstrual Cramps Jul 14 2009

I'm the same only it's THREE days of seriously bad cramps and my legs get tingly too. I've never heard of anyone else having the leg issue. Nice to know I'm not alone. Always have been this way and I've been checked for endometriosis - always negative. That's just the way some of us are. I'm old enough to have been on prescription Motrin back when it was still an experimental drug and it changed my life. I don't use the prescription stuff anymore but use over the counter Ibuprofen. Three Ibuprofen = 1 prescription Motrin and I used to take 3 prescription Motrin to start off then 1 or 2 every 3 or 4 hours after that. So you know how much over the counter stuff I take. I told my Dr how much I take and she didn't bat an eye. But do make sure you tell your Dr. if you choose to go that route. And always take it with food because it will burn your stomach otherwise. Hope it helps.

ecwk6 I'm not sure about a weather connection. I know I've had minor flare-ups in warm and cold weather. But last Sept I had what was up until then my worst flare-up. Then in Feb-March I had an even worse one, so my two worst flare-ups ever were during colder weather. I have skin sensitivities too and I almost always get an itchy rash in the wintertime. Could be just the dry air though.

Health & Support Anyone else going/went gray VERY young? Jul 14 2009

I started going gray at 18 but it was only a hair here & there. I colored for many years. Now in my 40's with more & more gray, I found my roots would become noticeable only after a few days (I've got brown hair and colored brown) so I stopped coloring because I figured gray roots look much tackier than plain old graying hair. And I wasn't willing to color every few days. It's not too bad because the gray is concentrated in the front so it almost looks like I'm coloring to frame my face with frosted highlights and I get compliments all the time! I thank my grandmother for that since she had the same graying pattern.

Weight Loss Has anyone changed their goal weight? Nov 12 2008

If you're happy at your current weight, then absolutely go into maintenance mode. I'd keep up the exercise and figure out how many calories you need to maintain. I've been doing the slow weight loss thing too, for about 2 years. I did adjust my weight goal down when I hit my first goal. I'm relatively happy at my current weight but it would be the icing on the cake if I do make it to the new goal. Not sure what I'll do if I get there. I'm sure I wouldn't adjust down again but I'm happy with what I'm eating and the portions. I like the idea of more wine!!!

I agree w/ 4theloss. If you are feeling hungry a lot of the time, you may want to think about cutting some carbs. I save carbs for mealtimes only and don't snack on them at all because carbs just make me feel even hungrier with just a few minutes.

Weight Loss Losing weight is expensive!!! Oct 18 2008

I agree it's expensive! But for me it's the food. The low-fat, sugar-free & whole grain stuff is always more expensive than the stuff that makes us fat. I don't lose weight that fast and I've been holding off on buying clothes. I invested in a belt and have been adjusting belt tightness up until now. I've lost 2 sizes in 18 months so about now I'm ready to buy new clothes but my old clothes are, well, old anyway so it's time.... It's nice to buy 10's instead of 14's! Yeah!

Snack on protein & fat; not carbs. 100 calories of low fat cheese or lean cold cuts will keep you satisfied longer than 100 calories of chips, crackers or cookies. I never snack on carbs because I feel like I didn't even eat anything when I'm done - hunger pangs get even worse! Save carbs for mealtimes rather than snacks.

Good luck!

38 lbs in 18 months & going for a total of 40 lbs by year end. It did it mainly by changing my eating habits and very little change in activity levels. For me it's not a diet but a way to eat that will last for the rest of my life.I've been eating low carb, more or less following the South Beach plan. I used to never eat breakfast and snacks were always carbs. Now I eat 3 meals a day and snack on protein & fat. It's really easy and I don't get hungry.

If I snack on carbs I feel as though I didn't even eat anything and I feel starving. So all carbs are whole grain & high in fiber and I eat them with meals rather than as snacks. No sugar, corn sweeteners or enriched white flour.

I find it's best to plan out all the meals of the day ahead of time and stick with it. No surprises. There are a ton of free SB recipes out there so it's easy to plan but I do recommend the books that are out there as well. The hardest part for me was getting up early enough to have time to make breakfast but I love to eat and I love eggs, cheese & turkey bacon so that's my reward (and egg-muffin sandwiches and french toast...).

After I proved to myself I was losing weight (a few months into it), I allowed myself one cheat day a week and my husband & I go out to eat for dinner. Usually we'll get a pizza or a burrito or a steak or something but I eat only half (if that) of what's on my plate. Then take the rest home & have it for lunch the next day. Watch portion sizes! That's the key.

I know it's hard to start but once you start losing & you see the results that's more motivation! Yeah, you'll hit plateaus (everyone does) but just stick with your plan and make sure you're getting enough calories and you'll start losing again. Good luck with your weight loss!

Weight Loss Calling all TALL women... PLEASE!! 5'9 or taller Oct 14 2008

I am 5'9" and now weigh 145 with starting weight 183 about 18 months ago.

I lose weight at 1500 cals or so and maintain at around 1800-2000 with little to no exercise besides house work, home renovation & gardening activities.

I've been doing the low carb thing, getting most calories from protein & fat and eating lots of fiber. No sugar, corn sweeteners or enriched white flour - well except for my weekly cheat day when my husband & I get a small pizza or something (but still watching portions!). I highly recommend the South Beach books & cookbook for ideas on how/what to eat.

Sometimes my local grocery store has it - sometimes they don't. I love cottage cheese but I hate the skim stuff. I don't think it's worth the few calories saved. The low-fat stuff is perfectly fine. Besides you need to eat fat! I've tried the unsalted stuff and I end up putting salt back in myself - I know that's bad. . . I like mixing in diced fruit or no-sugar-added canned fruit.

First off I'd say you may need to add a couple hundred calories on the days you are exercising. For me if I eat too much starch I get cravings and hunger pangs big time. So I stay away anything with refined sugar, enriched white flour or corn syrup.

If this was me, I'd substitute the instant oatmeal with the real thing - Old Fashioned Oats cook fine in the microwave too. For snacks I'd go with some protein. A cheese stick, cold cuts, nuts or a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese. For lunch I'd substitute the corn with some broccoli or some other green veggie. And for dinner the pasta would be whole grain and I try to limit it at 3/4 cup (dry) for a serving. I'd add a couple of servings of veggies for dinner too with a cheese sauce made with low fat cheese.

My fat & protein intakes are usually at 25-30% which I know is controversial but it has been working for me very well for the last 18 months. Just had my cholesterol checked and it is very low. The fat and protein keep me feeling full longer so I don't get hunger pangs and I don't overeat. Everyone is different so if you feel comfortable with your percentages then you don't need to change it. Good luck!

I'm not saying this is you, but I was in denial big time at my peak weight. I looked in the mirror and didn't think I looked fat. But the scale doesn't lie and when I got to the point where I started pushing size 16, I decided I didn't want to get a new wardrobe a size larger so I changed my eating habits. 18 months and 38 lbs later I look at pictures of myself from back then and I can't believe how fat I was. - And I totally didn't see it at the time. Weird...

Foods Watch for Sucralose (aka Splenda) Mar 19 2008

I have to agree that if it is important to you to not consume sucralose or any product, then you have to read labels. There's no getting around it. I don't have all day to go shopping either but I read labels. Not only on food but health & beauty products (I'm allergic to fragrance). Really it doesn't take too much to scan the labels. Once once you know what you can buy, you don't need to check them every time. You and you alone are responsible for the things you put in or on your body. You have the power to become informed. Do it.

Interesting about today's interest rates - yes 12% is high. Mine started out somewhere between 7 & 8% but it has only gone down since then. Do they still give today's graduates interest reductions for timely payments after 3 years? If so, then keep that in mind. And if you have trouble making ends meet in the beginning it really makes sense to go for a longer term to lower the payments so you can stay current and not ruin your credit rating.

Common sense tells you that you want to pay off the loans as quickly as possible. But the reality is that if you can invest the cash you have in your hands and make a better rate of return with that than the interest rate you're paying on the loans, it makes more sense to invest your cash and let the loans languish in a longer term. So do whatever you can to lower that rate and start a 401k or IRA as soon as you possibly can. I wouldn't work for a company that didn't offer some kind of retirement savings plan. Best if they match your contributions.

Retirement savings usually falls on deaf ears with students and recent graduates, but believe me when you hit your 40's you will kick yourself that you didn't start saving as soon as you joined the work force. I lived hand-to-mouth for many years and had myself convinced I couldn't afford to contribute to a 401k or IRA, but looking back now, I know I could have saved some if I really tried, and my retirement date would be years closer than it is now. Trust me you DO want to retire as early as possible and you can't start saving too early.

Sure pay off the student loan early if you can, and definitely pay it down while the interest rate is high. But if you can get your rate lower than 7% or so, your "spare" cash will serve you better in a retirement plan.

starcrossdlovex: well, it depends. I have mixed feelings about whether the school I went to made a difference in my career path or not. Maybe, maybe not. I've found that mostly it's about who you know, not necessarily what you know. Each time I've moved up, I got my job from somebody I knew or a through somebody I knew. So if you go to a high profile school, you may make some contacts that could prove valuable later. Or not.

I wouldn't worry too much about student loan debt and I certainly wouldn't let it stop me from going to a school that I thought would be in my best interest. The payments hurt a bit at first but once you're out of school for a while and you're on your own, you'll likely find the student loan is just a drop in the bucket of your budget compared to rent or a mortagage, car payments, insurance & not to mention heat & food. Sure it would be nice to be debt-free but the fact is most of us live in debt nearly all of our adult lives. And as long as you stay in good standing with your student loans, the interest rate will be much lower then the rest of your debt. Like I said in an earlier post, my interest rate on the student loan is lower than what my bank is paying me for interest on my savings so I'm in no hurry to pay it off at this point.

LOL!!! Yeah, I know, it sounds goofy but hey it works! I used to not only growl but hiss & spit at my kitties when they were bad. I'm sure the neighbors thought I was comletely nuts! The cats sure got the message tho! They turned out to be the best kitties ever but I might be a little prejudiced. ;>D

I find it helps if you speak their language. It might feel silly, but when they do something bad, growl at them. I mean pick them up and really GRRROOOOWL at them right in their faces. Then a good fling off the bed helps. Not so much to hurt but enough to send the message. Cats speak to each other in physical ways and sometimes we need speak to them physically also. They need to understand you are the dominant one, not them and sometimes the only way to get that across is in physical ways. The spray bottle works sometimes but I think some cats don't understand that the water spray is coming from YOU. They need to understand that it's you handing out the negative reinforcement. It sounds mean, but they are animals after all and they communicate much differently than people do.

If you want a serious relationship, don't waste your time on this guy. A lot of guys feel like they don't want to be the "bad guy" and be the one to break things off, so they wait until the woman gets fed up & breaks it off, or they simply never call. Clearly this guy is one of those. I'm sorry, it sounds like you really like him but believe me somebody else is out there for you!

Oh, I've used credit cards since I was 18! Got myself into a heap of debt in my 20's carrying balances, borrowing from Peter to pay Paul. Ugh. Finally paid it off in my 30's and never carried a balance after that - paid it all off in full every month. Until I got married in my 40's & bought a house that's a fixer-upper! We use one credit card just for house expenses and unfortunately we haven't had a zero balance in well over a year. Makes me nervous!

I started out w/about $32k, now 10 years later down to $21k. When I bought a new car, I consolidated all of the loans into one and changed the term to 20 years so I hardly notice the payments. Sallie Mae lowers your interest rate if you let them take automatic payments and also when you pay on time for 3 years. I'm down to a silly-low interest rate, something like 2% so I've got no problems w/Sallie Mae. For crying out loud, inflation is higher than that and even my bank pays more than 2% so what the heck...

If you're paying 18% are you having some repayment issues? The key is paying on time. But all isn't lost. You may be able to consolidate at a better rate. 18% is terrible! And if they don't let you consolidate right now, be patient and try again after you've been paying on time for 3 years. It WILL get better.

For whoever said that Sallie Mae charged somebody for an extra 2 semesters: There is no way that happened without some funny business going on. You can't get a loan unless the school is actually charging you and either you or your parents have to sign for that loan. So unless your friend quit school and didn't tell their parents and the parents went ahead & signed for the loans, well, it just can't happen. Either that or it was the school at fault, not Sallie Mae. Sallie Mae doesn't disburse the money unless the school sends a bill. Sallie Mae would certainly not have a legal leg to stand on for charging interest on loans never taken, so if your friend really is paying interest for false loans, he needs a lawyer.

Now I've only got some fresh water fish and some salt water fish & corals. My last kitty passed away last March - at 19 years old! She was such a cutie, I miss her to pieces! I had another one who also lived to 19 - he went 3 years ago. I'd love to get another couple of kitties, but we're in the middle of gutting our house and living in the last 2 rooms that are still fit for habitation. Not a good place for kitties at the moment.

Do you eat breakfast? I used to never ever eat breakfast and by 10:00 I had the munchies and I'd eat and eat all day! Now I eat breakfast and some days I'm still not hungry by lunch time. Just a salad for lunch will do it for me for most of the afternoon. I'll have a few peanuts for a snack, maybe at 3 or 4:00 and I'm good until dinner. This is really amazing to me because I used to be starving all the time.

Also, what you eat matters as much as your calorie count. 100 calories of protein and a little bit of fat will keep you satisfied a lot longer than 100 calories of cookies, crackers or chips. Those 100 calorie snack packs are so bad for you! They make you want to eat more and more. So try eating a bit of reduced fat cheese or some nuts instead of sweets or chips. Really it works!

ducklingerhank, that's the GOOD thing about high fiber food! They naturally keep you from eating too much because they are filling! You probably didn't feel sick, just FULL. Adding potatoes will defeat the purpose. Portion control! Portion control! Portion control! You probably shouldn't eat a "big bowl" of anything, if you're trying to lose weight, especially not anything with potatoes. Potatoes will make your blood sugar crash after a short while and then you'll just be making yourself another "big bowl" in an hour.
