Hiya everyone! I've been really busy keeping myself on the straight and narrow most of the summer, but my baby starts college tomorrow morning and that will begin the fall changing of our routine.  He is living at home since he will be attending a private school $$$!! I don't begin my classes until next week.  Sure will be strange with both myself and my son in college at the same time!  I just hope to be able to keep doing what I am doing for myself as these changes occur.

Usually I stay pretty well within my calorie limit for the day, but today I will likely be going over, as I consumed an ENTIRE avocado with my lunch!! Mmmm...lots of calories but well worth the splurge!  Plus I justify it because it is full of good fats, right! :)

Hope everyone has a terrific day!

purespark--I always walk once around the track before I stretch, so that helps warm up the muscles.  Good advice though! Thanks!

Well, I've not read the book for many, many years, but I LOVE the 1944 movie version with Orson Wells as Rochester, Joan Fontaine (SO believable) as Jane and a very young Elizabeth Taylor as Helen Burns.  A MUST SEE!!

dbackerfan--shin splints are just awful!  I feel so bad for you and it takes so long before they aren't an issue too!!  You're right about the need for good shoes and I would also add to that...Always Stretch Before AND After!  Even when walking "short" distances.

Can't have enough happy walkers out there!

mamabird--I am also losing pounds and inches because of my walking.  Once thing I especially like about it is not only that it clears my head but that it is strictly ME time!  I take my ipod and thoroughly enjoy listening to it, as it is really the only time during the day that I have an opportunity to listen to music.

delight--if it is something you really want, you should be able to fit a little time into your schedule for walking.  It sure makes you feel GOOD!

Hope Olivia is having a good weekend moving!  Whew! Makes my tired just thinking about doing it!

I completely agree with lb802! The barter system idea sounds very creative and doable.

Also, you are right to be concerned about the neighborhood children playing on your equipment, trampoline and even in your house when you are not at home!  Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.  I would create a waiver of liability (just write something up as a Word document that states you do not want unsupervised children playing at your house)  make a bunch of copies and ask all the neighborhood kid's parents to sign it.  This would allow you to have a reasonable dialogue with the neighbors about their kids playing at your house and your concerns.  If they are uncomfortable signing a document, then politely ask them to forbid their kids to be at your house when you aren't home.  Not mean.  Just smart!  You have to look out for yourself!

Mmm...both ideas sound great, Thanks!  I just knew black beans and sweet potatoes would go together.  And you can't have enough good suggestions for squash!

Hello walkers!   Thanks Olivia for starting this thread! Yes, walking makes me feel, well, absolutely POSITIVE!!!  I love my morning walks and they make me feel happy and uplifted.  They aren't something I stress over...did I walk  far enough, did I walk fast enough,  did it burn every calorie I ate?  Nope,  I do it for the awesome energy it gives me (and the fact that my legs look better doesn't hurt!).  Smile

Hope to meet others on this thread whose walking makes them just plain feel good too!

A really good, brisk morning walk!  I can't hardly drag my butt around when I don't get one.  In order to do it, I get up earlier (and go to bed earlier) than I used to, but feeling energized throughout the day makes it really worth it!

No walking here either...big thunderstorms with lots of lightening throughout the morning.  Too hot and humid for me to walk this afternoon, anyhow I am too wiped out after pt (2 hours of it!).  I'll make it up on Saturday, since I don't normally walk on the weekends and will have the opportunity to do so this one.

Glad you like the article, I thought it was pretty good as well.  I had noticed my posture improving, but thought it was just improved self-esteem! :)

It's not a bad magazine, although, like most magazines I subscribe to, it tends to get repetitive over time.  I think it also had a good article about mindful eating...or it might be in the September issue of Fitness...either way, its worth reading.

It seems that the orange dot indicates threads you have not visited and no dot means you have clicked on it.  I don't know if that's actually correct, it's just what I figured on my own.

Hi gang! Overcast weather here in MI as well, although the sun did come out briefly this afternoon.  Got my walk in during the gray morning though.  Funny me, I didn't feel like going this am, so told myself to go and just take it easy (BTW I tell myself this pretty much every day!) but by the time I walked a warm-up lap around the track and then stretched, I felt just as motivated as ever and got in a really good workout.  Then came home and worked on abs and shoulder with exercise ball and stretches.  LOL! Even when I try to take it easy I don't!

Going to have to get to the track really early tomorrow.  I'm meeting my two best friends at our favorite Detroit restaurant for breakfast (Detroit Breakfast House & Grill) at 10 am so I will need to be back from walking by 8:30.  I checked out the menu online today while I wasn't hungry and planned out what I will order.  Knowledge is power!

Have a terrific evening

Good Morning! It's raining here too, but I did go out and do my usual walk.  Just being able to do that tells me that this weight loss effort will be successful and for life.  Something is different from all the other times I have tried to lose weight...I would have never walked/exercised in the rain before.  With age comes wisdom, right?  I know I need to keep on track no matter what the weather does!

Well, gotta run, I have physical therapy in 20 minutes and I want to dry my hair before I go.

Welcome Claudia! I know that sweaty, invigorated feeling and I love it too!  Makes me feel great and I have so much more energy the rest of the day, which I think is counter-intuitive--expending so much energy to get more energy?  Makes no sense, but sure does work!

sarah-I found the scale did not move much when I was only walking 30 minutes either.  I had the time to up it to an hour and now I am feeling lots of results (been about a month--maybe a month and a half now).

Sue-hope you enjoyed using that new RV! Are you native american?  Both my sons are Objiwa--part of the Soo Ste. Marie Chippewa tribe in Michigan.

It is really raining here too, but I walked my full hour anyhow as there was no thunder or lightening.  Just me and the seagulls, though.  It was raining so hard that water was dripping off my hat before I even made it once around the track!  Completely soaked my rain jacket--I guess it is water resistant, not water proof!  I was wet all under too.  Worth it though, as I feel thinner today.

Hope everyone enjoys their day today!

Also, I found it by doing a forum search "walking off the weight"--be sure to put the quotation marks around the phrase.

Rachel--here is the link you are looking for.

I won't be walking today, since weekends are husband time for me.  I'm bummed though because I forgot to put my pedometer in my pocket this morning and I have been doing quite a bit of casual walking this morning that won't be registered.  Darn!

Have a terrific weekend!!
