| Health & Support | PCOS...seriously?! | Dec 11 2008 02:42 (UTC) |

Congrats on losing 40 lbs! I'm really impressed with your exercise routine... My doctor told me I have PCOS last year... and sometimes I feel as it was a catch-all diagnosis too. She did do a blood test and said my hormone levels were not irregular but in an odd ratio, but I don't have any cysts or other symptoms. I was on birth control for about two years, went off it summer of 2007, and my period didn't come back until they gave me some medicine that made it. I have been on birth control since, except for a little over a month ago when I stopped taking it -- but this time my period came back like normal. Maybe my issue is that I'm not really sure what PCOS is... I've tried to read up on it, but it seems so broad. |

I have been researching this today. I was at my doctor's this morning and she said she thinks I have PCOS. Here is a link I found http://www.pcosupport.org/medical/whatis.php I also have a question... what is the relation between weight gain/ability to lose and PCOS? |

We have similar stats... I'm 24, 5'1", and 135. I was 140 (or even a little more) in July, I started watching what I ate. I was already semi-active, but I started trying to exercise more. I'm down to 135, but I've been this weight for over a month and no moving. It's really frustrating. I go some days with 1200 calories (my goal), but some days I'm around 1600-1700. Every week or so I have a 2000 calorie day. I don't exercise as much as you... four hours dancing, that is so impressive! But I do try to run about 4 times a week. When I first lost weight, I had stopped drinking caffiene and any drink but milk and water. I don't know if that makes a difference, but now that my schedule has gotten busier, I've started back drinking diet soda in full swing, and also stopped losing weight. Those things may not be related, though... Also, here is a question I have... does the amount of sleep you get a night affect weight loss? Would sleep deprivation play any role in your body's ability to metabolize? |

| I don't know. But I wish I did! I have lost five pounds and am at 135 right now. I'm about 5'1" and am having a hard time losing. Part of it is my problem (having a problem with consistency). Good luck to you! | |||

| I have two types of pasta in my cabinet. 3/4 of a dry cup of Healthy Harvest whole wheat pasta is 210 calories. 3/4 of a cup of dry Rotilla pasta is 180 calories. I'd guess the serving size to be 3/4 of a cup... seems to be the common factor... | |||
| Weight Loss | drinking binge :(( feeling soo bad right now!! help.......... | Sep 17 2007 03:10 (UTC) |

I understand too... I do really good in the week... but on the weekends, I tend to overdrink and eat. Last weekend I had a bottle of wine... plus a lot of chips and salsa. This friday I had way too much beer and yeger, and then ate a pita. Saturday after drinking a few mixed drinks, I ate a krispy kreme doughnut and had a real cherry coke. I went WAY over even the maintenance calorie limits. :-( I'm not too sure if there is a solution (other than just to not do it... ) I'd be interested to hear of any suggestions... I think I'm just going to work on self control and moderation (and be dd!) now that i think about it... on the bright side there is slight improvement. Only one doughnut and I split a hummus pita... with no dressing. I also went salsa dancing saturday... so at least I moved around while drinking. Before this summer my choices would have been worse... but I still have a long way to go I'm going to try and plan what I will drink before going out, allot the calories, and stick to it. |

My favorite salad: spinach carrots mushrooms black olives hardboiled egg cheese bacon tomatoes orange pepper cucumber . . . basically, I start with spinach and put whatever I have around on it. for dressing I either use the salad spritzers (couple of sprays) or vinegar and oil. I also put random spices on it also (Ms. Dash italian version is good on salads).
Man, all the other salad ideas sound really good! I'm definately going to have to try the ones with fruit. :-) |

I think the environment can definately play a role (though I try not to use it as an excuse!) I'm living in Alabama... home of sweet tea and fried chicken and an endless number of casseroles. I went to visit my extended family this weekend... and definately blew my diet. It's easy when I'm at home, and I can chose my food (although there is a lack of reasonably priced health food stores). But when I was with my family, we had 5 different deserts on the table, coolers full of coke products, and more fried chicken than you could ever imagine. It's sad though, the majority of my adult family members are overweight, and diabetes is a big problem in my family. And is it just me or does most every social event seem to revolve around food? I love to get together with friends and family, but it gets hard when the get-togethers always have lots of good unhealthy food! I need more willpower! |

I don't know much about any scientific evidence of diet coke and weight gain/loss, but I do know that I don't crave sweets as much now that I'm not drinking diet sodas. I stopped drinking diet coke and caffiene altogether about 2 weeks ago. I now hardly ever get cravings for sweets. It could be for other reasons, but I'm blaming it on the diet coke ;-) Also, I've started noticing that my "naturally" thin friends drink real soft drinks... They generally don't drink coke a lot, but when they do, it's the non-diet kind... |

| algernon, my sister has been wanting me to read the Survivor book, and tokyorush, the Power, Faith and FAntasy book sounds really good... I want to learn more about the middle east... I have The Kite Runner on my shelf right now... thought it looked interesting but haven't heard anything about it or read it yet. Glad you liked it! I will hopefully be reading it soon.
One of my favorite books of all times is The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood is good, and so is Sue Kid Monk's books (The Mermaid's Chair and The Secret Life of Bees). |

At first I was shocked when I read the blog... then I read through pages on the website... I laughed, then was angry. Now I want to cry. I am a Christian, and it angers me when people use religion as a means to obtain power. It angers and saddens me a whole lot more when people twist the meaning of "love" in order to get power. It may be "consensual" in name, but CDD does not recognize the sacred worth of women. It demeans and lessons females to a subsidary role. It makes me want to cry/scream. |

| It sounds like you know what you want. Go with your gut. Stick with what is healthy and safe. It is totally reasonable (and even more than reasonable... it is really smart!) to not have sex unless you are on birth control and using condoms. He should respect that. And you shouldn't risk your health and life! (I waited to have sex until I was on birth control... and used a condom. . . last thing I need right now in my life is a kid... or a disease!)
And about the relationship... honestly, it sounds like he is going no where... From what you said it doesn't seem like he has much respect for himself (or for you). I would personally try and get out of that relationship... You need someone you feel safe with and who makes you happy! Dating should be fun. Take care of yourself! |

| The Lounge | Dream Analysis Anyone? | Aug 14 2007 16:33 (UTC) |

| Oooohhh I love dreams!!!... I took a dream interpretation class in undergrad, and it was very fun...
One thing we learned was that even though there are universal symbols (water might be one of them) everyone is different and things could have different meanings from person to person... Here is a fun way to analyze this (I'm a big dork...) 1.) write out your dream... you already did that ;-) 2.) make any practical connections you see (like the water and the fact it rained last night, etc.) 3.) make connections with emotional aspects of your life (losing weight, are you making any big decisions? etc) 4.) write down the main parts of your dream (chocolate, mirror, weighing more, whirpool tub, the painting, white, sheet, making decisions, etc. etc.) Once you have all the words that relate to your dream, play the word association game.... take the word chocolate, for instance, and write down all things that you think of when you hear that word. they don't have to be related to the dream at all. 5.) once you have done the word association game, see if anything that you associate with these words "fits" or seems to stand out to you. 6.) Honor your dream. Do active to "thank" the dream... this could be simple, like drawing a picture of part of the dream, more complex like wrapping a doll in a sheet, be creative :-) Hope this doesn't sound too new agey :-) I think dreams are cool... even if they are just your subconcious resurfacing while you sleep. |

| Has anyone ever read The Wal-Mart Effect? It's eye opening. It's not specifcally anti-wal-mart, but it makes you realize how powerful this store really is, and how wal-mart has changed the landscape of almost all parts of our society.
Here's the link: http://www.walmarteffectbook.com/thebook.html I have stopped shopping at wal-mart. But I'm only able to not shop there because I live in a city with other store options. When I visit my parents, Wal-Mart is the only store around. I went there staurday with my mom and dad, and realized why I can't stand the store so much... Besides all the public policy reasons, the store is too big, crowded, understocked and has lines that take you 20 minutes to get through. I would gladly pay a few extra cents and get the same product from either a local grocer or another store. Paying extra money isn't an option for many people though. |

I love my lips! I think they are shaped nicely. I like my fingernails too. I don't have to do anything with them but they grow well and are pretty strong. |

| The Lounge | cockroaches...wtf! | Aug 08 2007 20:06 (UTC) |

| Reminds me of a funny (ish) story... About one time a roach did cause some pain
My freshman year of college, I lived in a dorm. And we had the occasional roach... wasn't much we could do to stop it. Anyways, one night me and my roommate see one on our wall... and it's huge! We start screaming and running, and finally realize that we need to kill it. Since we didn't have any raid or other roach killer, I grab my bottle of lysol. I spray the heck out of it... The roach falls to the ground and we can't find it anymore. At this point, a girl next door knocks. She is the itty bitty thin girl with bleach blond hair and the most southern accent you have ever heard. She says "I was just makin sure yall were allright... I thought someone was havin sex in there with all the racket but then I heard a crash and thought I should come by and make sure yall are okay". We assure her that we are okay, no s&m going on . . . just trying to kill a roach. So we close the door, make a mad search around the room and still don't see the roach. A few minutes later we hear the same southern speaking girl outside scream "!*#@ you, you are not going in my room". We go out in the hall... and she is crying and holding her finger. Apparently, when we closed our door... the lysol-drenched roach crawled out from under our room and started running into her room. She was out in the hall talking to someone and saw it... she went to throw her shoe on it to kill it (she was holding the shoe in her hand) and somehow pulled her finger back in the process. We had to take her to the hospital... she broke her finger trying to kill the roach... :-( It was a long night... So that being said, that's the only physical pain I have ever heard of roaches causing. I recommend the roach traps... I have had good success with them in the dorms (after that night... we bought a whole box and didn't see any other roaches). |

| I did spinning classes last year and loved it. I didn't lose weight though... but I wasn't watching what I ate either. I did feel a lot better after the workouts. I may start going to a spinning class once this semester starts (my gym membership doesn't work in the summer) ... I haven't decided to do spinning or just run, though... I'm not sure which is more effective | |||

| reading this group of posts is very interesting, and i have a thought... do males get asked this question as much or get treated the same by not wanting to have children? I know there are biological differences with hormones and such. . . but it seems like a double standard. Kind of going back to the idea that it's a woman's duty/responsibility/place in life to be a mother.
I have the deepest respect for my mom and all mothers. I just think motherhood should definately be a choice... not a duty or destiny. . . I'm 24 and right now don't think I want to have children. That may change, but I kind of hope it doesn't :-) |

| I thought I was the only one who had a weird obsession with peanut butter! Whenever I make a sandwich with it or whatever, I would always end up eating a few spoonfuls. :-P And at random times I just crave it, can't understand why!
I've switched to all-natural, but it still is tempting to eat spoonfuls of it... though afterwards it all hits you at the same time and your stomach feels like it has a rock in it... no good. :-P I'll have to try this PB2 stuff... Or do like someone said... buy it in portion sized packs... |

| yeah, i definately gained weight my freshman year. and i don't think it was from dining hall food or drinking. my weight came from eating out more often, and late night runs to waffle house and krispy kreme. Eating waffles and sausage at 2 am is no good :-)
as far as dining halls go, mine always had a sandwich bar/salad bar. (unfortunately it always had a desert and fountain drink bar as well!) |
