Thanks for writing everyone. It does seem rather crazy that I was following SB during a flu bug. The struggle to manage my weight has been all consuming for a long time and it never relents. This is obviously a deeper issue that I have to deal with. The immediate issue at hand for me is finding a safe, manageable way to get down to my GW and then maintain it. Given my reaction, it might not be for me. The metabolic typing diet looks interesting. "Carbo type" describes me perfectly...does this mean I can eat carbs again ;)? I really do need to figure out a way to come to grips with my weight-I understand that people often fluctuate between 5-10 lbs but getting down to 125 has become my obsession. I feel like I will not be satisfied until I hit that number. |

Thanks for the support, guys. Mars_0112, Pre-SBD, I was a dilligent calorie counter and logged everything I ate. The plus side to the SBD is that I am always satiated. When my diet was 50% carbs, though I never ate sugar or white bread or pasta, I was always ravenous by the end of the day. Trying SB was just a way to shake my body out of this weight gain/plateau. Swirlything, My cravings are definitly under control, though when i am sick (as I am right now) I tend to yearn for things like ice cream and oatmeal. However, I am not craving these things, I just feel sick to my stomach and am having a hard time looking forward to my next high-protein meal. You're right, since I have about 7 lbs to lose, i shouldn't complain about 2. I might have to start Phase II soon, since I really dont feel well and can't stomach any more meat. My fear is that the moment I eat taht oatmeal...BAM! Two pounds right back on. But I guess if I am not feeling well I have no choice. Thhq, this week I have not worked out at all since I have been battling a terrible bug. I've eaten between 1200-1400 a day since starting. If I ahd been exercising, that would probably have amounted to a 500-700 calorie deficit, depending on the intensity of my workout. However, since I have not exercised, we're looking at a 200-400 calorie deficit. |

I AM SO FRUSTRATED. I just finished week 1 of Phase 1 of the program, weighed myself...and lost a measily 2 lbs. TWO POUNDS. I have followed this diet pretty much to the letter and am ready to give up. Two things: 1)I have a horrible cold this week and have either been at work or in bed and thus unable to exercise. 2) I have been perpetually nauseous since starting phase 1. It's at the point where the thought of eating another egg, piece of chicken, or piece of cheese makes my stomach turn. I force myself to eat, then feel sick to my stomach after. Pre-south beach I had my morning oatmeal every day and really looked forward to it...now I wake up in the morning ready to vomit (no, I am not pregnant). My story is that I hit my goal weight over the summer when I was studying for the bar exam. During that time I did not exercise, drank buckets of coffee, and ate fast food (albeit healthy fast food, no french fries or milk shakes or anything like that). Since the summer my weight has steadily crept up from 123 to 132 and I am literally at my wits end. Every trip to the scale is filled with fear and trepidation. I exercise at least 3-5 times a week, keep a diligent food journal, but unfortunately have a desk job. I try to take the stairs every where, park far away so I can walk, etc. The SBD was my last ditch, "enough is enough", effort to get down to 125. Needless to say I am disenchanted...I know that once I move on to Phase 2 the weight will come right back on and that I am pretty much destined to never be my goal weight and struggle for the rest of my life to manage my weight. I am so sorry for the long post but I am really at the end of my rope here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Jane |

swirlything~ THANK YOU x a million for that pancake recipe. I just had it for dinner and it was AMAZING. It tasted literally just like french toast!! I am going to have to tweak the recipe when I make it next time because it was a tad runny, but I am thrilled to have found a sweet breakfast choice for phase 1! During phase 2, Maple Grove has a great sugar free pancake mix. Only 5 net carbs per serving in that one. But for phase 1 and beyond, the carb free pancakes rock! |

Thanks for the advice ladies! Instead of my usual oatmeal and fruit, I started my day with egg whites, fat free cheese, light wheat toast. and lean turkey bacon. I packed a chef salad for lunch with some high protein greek yogurt and string cheese...hopefully all the added protein will help keep me fuller longer. Thanks again! |

FYI: Age 26, 5'4", 128-130 (depending on time of the month). Goal Weight 125-125. Haven't lost anything since the summer when I was taking the bar exam and not eating and gained it right back when I started eating properly again... |

I actually have thought about moving to NYC, its a mecca for lawyers :) If I end up down there, I will def let you know. |

Thanks for the advice everyone. Part of my fear about going back to the gym is the fact that he was my gym partner-we would go to the gym together almost every single day and he was my biggest motivator and supporter when it came to losing weight and exercising. So while I know that I need to get back there, to go alone feels weird and I know will be really painful. I guess I'm just going to have to suck it up and try to get through it. I guess Monday will be my first day on my own at the gym...we'll see how it goes. Thanks again everyone. |

any updates on people's weight/measurements? I'm still up 5 lbs from starting the program :( No loss in weight, but no change in measurements either, so I don't know what to think. As much as I want to keep up with this, I'm really grappling with the increase on the scale when I worked so hard to get down to my original weight... |

Have any of you guys experienced weight gain while following this plan? I was going steady at 127 and then this week went up to 129 and this morning I was 131. I haven't seen 131 in almost 9 months and am getting nervous about this diet plan. I have been following it pretty well, but had a few slip ups this past weekend (halloween, bachlorette party, adn then bridal shower in three days) and am currently experiencing some problems with my birth control. But I'm working out at least 5 times a week (3 times lifting, 2-3 times cardio) so it's impossible for me to have gained 4 lbs of fat right? It's also impossible for me to have put on 4 lbs of muscle in the past few weeks. Advice?? |

Thanks Karozel! Another question: can I continue to do a spinning class during stage 1? Or am I forbidden from doing any kind of endurance exercise during the first stage? Were any of you gus even able to get a run in during the first workouts? Sorry for all the questions, I'm really excited to start! |

I'm about to start my first workout today. I feel like an idiot, but can someone explain to me what I'm supposed to do in stage 1? Do we complete workout A first, then workout B and then go on to stage 2? Or do we complete both at once, doing each exercise everytime we workout until we're done with both? My understanding is that during stage 1 were doing squats, pushups, seated rows, step-ups, prone jackknives, deadlifts, dumbellshoulder presses, pulldowns, lunges, and swiss ball crunches every single time we work out...am I right about this? Sorry, I'm just not a chart person :) |

I know this has been discussed on the thread, but how many of you cut 300 calories from your maintenance amount? He said that if you must stray from maintenance calories, you should not cut more than 300 calories, and this is my plan for now...has anyone else done this? What results? |

Is this the calorie cycling that everyone keeps talking about? According to calorie count, at my age, weight, and activity level, I burn about 1900 calories a day, thus 1400 calories a day would be an appropriate deficit to lose a pound a week. So basically, I would go a week eating 1900, what my body needs in a given day, and then go a week eating 1400? Has anyone else had success using this method?

First of all, congrats not only on the weight loss, but the healthy diet and exercise. Changing your lifestyle is no easy task. Plateaus are really frustrating but often inevitable as your body adjusts to less calories. I would first calculate your basal metabolic rate here: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ Then multiply by your activity level and subtract 500. With your activity level, I would say that you are very active, especially given the physical activity at your job. I work a desk job, usually get some walking in a day at work, and then go to the gym or do some kind of vigorous physical activity 4-5 times a week and I put myself as "lightly active." Hit that calorie goal and you should be good! Keep up the good work. |

Many thanks. I did the 1200 calorie diet for a year and was successful in losing 40 lbs, but out of the blue in maintenance mode my weight has started to slowly creep up and I am really paranoid to eat more than 1200. According to my stats with a light activity level I need to eat 1400 calories to lose which is manageable I suppose at 5'4" and 128 (trying to get down to 124) but definitly not much fun :(. |

Went out to eat last night. I had chicken teriyaki with brown rice and sugar free fat free ice cream with fruit for dessert...and what do I see this morning? 128.8. AAAHHHHHHH. The frustration is maddening. I think I've hit that this is the point where I get out of maintenance mode and into diet mode. I'm looking at the green line on my weight log and it is starting to go up. Great. Is this how I am going to have to live the rest of my life? Constantly weighing myself and dieting? It really sucks. 1200 calories, here I come... I know I probably sound really whiny and that I'm feeling sorry for myself (I guess I do feel sorry for myself haha) but the fear of gaining weight, any weight, is unreal. When I was studying for the bar exam this summer I lost weight from stress...maybe I should try that again? I do understand that weight fluctuations are normal but I am starting to get concerned that this is legitimiate weight gain. My clothes fit exactly the same but who knows. I have this image of my mind of me when I was fat and I just can't shake it. So there's my therapy session for the day, I am off to the gym. Thanks for the advice guys, I appreciate you putting up with my incessant whining about my weight fluctuations especially since I know we're all going through the same thing in some way. Any more suggestions are definitly welcome :) Good luck to everyone else in their weight loss journey. |

I buy dreamfields at the local grocery store. It's a little bit more expensive than regular pasta but its sooo good and only has 5 grams of digestable carbs a cup! |

I should listen to my own advice...but I would suggest cutting some carbs and replacing with protein and veggies. I would say 1) have one packet of oatmeal (Quaker Oats Weight Control is great-made with Splenda so virtually no sugar as compared to other types of oatmeal) and replace the other with some scrabled egg whites. 2) The simple Harvest Oatmeal bar has a lot of sugar...have you tried some of the Special K protein bars? Or there's also think thin bars that have virtually no carbs or sugar but 20 grams of protein. I am also a big fan of muscle milk light or myoplex light (150 cals with 30 grams of protein). 3) Dinner looks okay but I would say try replacing Barilla plus with the Dreamfields pasta (5 grams net digestable carbs and it tastes great!) and throw in a side salad with light dressing or more steamed/grilled veggies. Even if it's just the frozen kind! 4) Get rid of the matzo cracker if you can and replace with something more nutritious...some reduced fat string cheese, a piece of fruit, carrot sticks and hummus...you get the idea. I struggle with my carb consumption daily but am aiming for 20% carbs a day. Its tough and I don't always meet it but just remember how important lean protein and veggies are for weight loss and your health. Good luck! |

Hey all! I decided during my second year of law school that I had no more excuses and that the college weight had to come off. Height: 5'4" SW: 167 CW: 125 I honestly would like to lose maybe another 5. But my weight seems to have leveled off here and I am content at a size 2/4. Right now I am working on toning up and building muscle! I lift weights a few times a week, cardio the rest, and I throw in a spinning class for good measure. The way I lost the weight was the good old fashioned way: counting calories and exercising. I am convinced that weight loss is 80/20 diet and exercise. I have completely changed how I eat and live. No more booze, no white carbs, no sugar. I eat small meals every few hours and try to limit carbs to only brown, high-fiber, complex carbs. I give myself one meal off where I can have WHATEVER I want to eat! I think the key to weight loss is considering it not as a "diet" which is temporary. It has to be a new way of living.

Have any of you guys used the machine where-and I literally can think of no other way to describe it-you sit in a contraption kind of like the one at the gynecologist? For all you men out there, its the one where you sit with your legs spread and contract your legs closed? It's supposed to work hips and inner thighs. My point is that I tried to do it yesterday and had to stop because I literally felt like my groin was about to break in two. Have any of you ever experienced this and should I just keep trying at it? Sorry for this quasi-graphic post. |
