I totally agree with you! When I was trying to lose the weight my greatest inspiration was seeing before and after photos of others who were trying to lose weight/get in shape/get healthy. I still look for these pictures to help inspire me to continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle. My pictures are posted in my gallery. The true before picture is the one that was uploaded on September 4, 2007 and the final after picture is the one that was uploaded on June 2, 2008. I hope that it helps others realize that it can be done. It is not easy, but it IS possible. |

Deli meat is soooooo over priced. I know that it is convenient, but it is outrageously over priced. Instead of buying turkey or chicken breast from the deli buy fresh chicken breast then grill them or bake them in the oven one night then you can slice them up to put on a sandwich or a wrap throughout the week. I like fajitas so I dice my chicken, mix it with some fat free or low fat cheese, jalapenos, tomatoes and hot sauce and then put all of that on a fat free or low carb tortilla. Also, cooked shrimp is cheaper than deli meat and it is loaded with protein and so easy to prepare. Just buy a bag, keep it in the freezer and take it out (just a serving) the night before and put it in a container in the fridge and the next day it is ready. I dip mine in cocktail sauce sometimes or put it in my salad. Hummus is definitely a staple for me as well. Inexpensive and oh so healthy. Put it on a tortilla with fresh spinach, diced tomatoes and diced peppers...YUM!! Canned chili is another cheap and easy food (high in sodium though, but Hormel makes a turkey chili that is low fat, low cals, high protein and high fiber) Those are just a few ideas if you want to try them. |

Not to be harsh, but if you have time to work out, you have time to eat healthy. Fruits and veggies take no time to prepare. Neither does yogurt with granola, a bowl of healthy cereal with fat free milk, a cup of instant oatmeal, a turkey sandwich on wheat, etc... I made the same mistake as you (found time to work out, but not to eat) and I ended up gaining back some of the weight that I had lost. Then I got depressed about gaining back some weight so I ate a bunch of crap (because that is what I do when I get depressed) and then I gained more. So I ended up putting on 10 lbs and now I get to lose it again. Well, for the past 2 weeks I decided on a crash diet of 1200 calories a day and exercise. Well, guess what? I gained another 2 lbs. So starting this past Monday I am back to just eating healthy (about 1800 cals a day with exercise) and taking my time losing the 12 lbs. Bottom line is take your time and do it the right way or your 5 lb weight gain could spiral into a bigger weight gain. |

I am so in that place. Very very frustrating. I am: Female Age 37 5' 6" 132 lbs Starting weight 187 Lowest weight 127 For the past 6 months I have fluctuated between 130 and 135. I really want to be 125, but I cannot manage to get there. If I am overly diligent on eating and exercise for a few weeks I can get down to 129-130, but 1 splurge day and I am back up to 133-135. UGH!! What to do?

You are not alone. So many of us feel the same way. I spent most of my adult life hovering between 150 and 165. Then a few years ago I just went crazy and could not stop eating. I ballooned up to 187 and I was so embarrassed to go out anywhere. I did not want to go to work or out with my family. It was awful and I was so ashamed of myself, but I still could not stop eating. I finally put my foot down and began the process to a healthier me. I still had my moments along the way (and I actually still have days that I wear baggy clothes and don't want anyone to touch me because I feel so fat and ashamed), but you can stop the cycle that you are in now. Keep reading CC. Find some friends here to cheer you on and tell yourself that every great journey begins with the first step (that has become my mantra through this life changing journey). You can do this |

| Weight Loss | Recently healthy Mom needs advice for helping my daughter reach her weight loss goals. | Jul 09 2008 14:25 (UTC) |

Thank you to everyone for your words of advice. Please be aware that the word "diet" is not allowed in our home. Since the day that I began on my healthy lifestyle 1 year ago I made is very clear to my family that I was not dieting, but instead changing my lifestyle and although I have reached my weight loss goals I still maintain healthy eating and exercise habits. We also cook healthy foods and have healthy snacks in the house. My husband still has to have his can of peanuts and occasional box of cookies, but I cannot do anything about that. I also have a 9 year old daughter (soon to be 10) who is learning a healthier lifestyle. She has learned to make healthier decisions about what she eats and watches her portions when she has treats. I encourage both of my girls to enjoy treats, but in moderation. I always tell them that moderation is the key. Thank you for the advice on activities. I do believe that that is the secret to getting in shape and staying in shape, but I am having a hard time motivating her to find an activity that she loves. She is going on bike rides and doing some cardio/weights, but I would rather see her take up an activity. She plays soccer during fall season, but does not want to practice outside of that time. A swim team sounds great, but we do not have one here that she could attend. She has tried many activities in the past (dance, cheer leading, gymnastics, horseback riding, karate and soccer). but nothing has caught her attention (and she did all of those activities for at least a year). Any other ideas? I have tried the whole "walk/bike/workout with me as I need the help/company" and she doesn't go for it. She truly does not like to move any more than is necessary. She is a sitter which is so unlike the rest of the family. We are all always moving. She is doing fantastic with eating healthier, but I have had to tell her that she is only allowed on caloriecount twice a day to log her food because she is becoming obsessive about it. |

I understand that she is not overweight, but she is unhappy with the way that she looks and feels. I have never suggested to her that she needs to lose weight. She has come to that decision on her own and I simply want to encourage her to be healthy. To eat healthier foods and be more active. I do not think that she needs to lose weight, but if she wants to lose weight she has about 10-15 pounds of weight that she can lose and still be very healthy. I do not want to be the type of mom that makes weight an issue, but I do want to encourage a healthier lifestyle. I do cook very healthy foods for the whole family and try to keep the "junk" food to a minimum in the house. I also ask everyone (my husband and both of my daughters) every day if they would like to work out with me or join me for a walk or a bike ride and they usually do (at least 1 of them does at any given time). As far as the weight goes, I understand that she was 12 two years ago, but so were all of her friends and she has gained a lot more than all of them and that is very upsetting to her. If I was the type of mom that harped on my daughter or made an issue of her weight I would not be sending this post out. The whole reason that I am asking for help is so that I want to deal with this very delicate issue in the best possible manner so that she feels supported and encouraged without feeling bad about herself. If I could take all of the weight that she wants to lose and put it on myself I would (and that is saying a lot for a person who has spent the last year working very hard to lose weight), but I obviously cannot do that. I love her so very very much and I know how she feels and it breaks my heart to watch her struggle with her self esteem. I just want some advice, not for people to assume that I am the bad guy here. Thanks for the advice thinthought. A race for the cure sounds like a great idea! I will look into it. |

So she weighs less than you, but not by much. Talk to her. Be honest with her about how her attitude makes you feel and ask her why she feels this way. You cannot change how she feels, but if you are both open and honest with each other it will at least cause less tension. Also, it is harder for women to lose weight (usually) so that might be her frustration as well (I know that it bugs me that my husband can drop 5 lbs in about 4-5 days of just cutting out snacks). Good luck and keep me posted. |

I understand your wife completely. When I gained weight and surpassed my husband's weight (he is 165) I was devastated. I felt huge and unfeminine. I want my husband to be bigger than me because I am afraid that if I am larger than him he will not find me attractive. That was never the case as he always found me feminine and sexy even when I peaked at 185 lbs. It was my problem, not his. I now weigh 130 lbs and my husband is still 165 and I feel so much better about myself. After I lost all of the weight I told him how much I had weighed before and he was very surprised because he never thought of me as overweight, just curvy and sexy. I explained that that was the reason that I was always force feeding him before and trying to get him to gain weight. It was wrong, but I know that I still would hate for him to be smaller than me. How much do you weigh? How much does your wife weigh? |

Like I said, he said that everyone is different. Some people start in a week and some start in 6 weeks. Also I imagine that many people are not completely honest with their doctor about when they start exercising again. So I wanted to hear real stories. I am also quite nervous about the process so I was hoping to hear from people who have been through it and what their experience was with diet/exercising. I will, of course, do only what my body tells me to do and I would never put my health of a really expensive surgery at risk to exercise. I just was hoping to hear some advice about what to expect. |

Of course they tell you to wait 6 weeks, but I cannot believe that it really takes that long. Also, they told me that everyone is different so I wanted to hear from "real" people who have actually had the surgery, not a males doctor's clinical opinion |

Same thing with the Chai Latte. It is loaded with calories. Why can't they make it with just fresh tea, your milk of choice and your sweetener of choice? This way you could use nonfat milk and equal and it would be low cal? Does anyone know if you can ask for it that way or is it a pre-made thing? |

| Fitness | Squat advice | Apr 20 2008 00:33 (UTC) |

I have started using The Firm DVD High Def Sculpt with 5 lb weights. There are squats and lunges. Has anyone used this to tone up the thighs and butt? If so did it work? I am like jrise, 5' 6" 127 lbs and medium boned. My top is bony and muscular (arms and stomach muscular/ribs and back and shoulders bony), but my upper thighs and butt are jiggly and have cellulite. I walk (5 mph) 5 miles a day and do The Firm routine about 3 times a week. I have really bad knees so the side lunges always hurt me, but the squats and lunges seem to be okay on my knees. Anyone with advice on The Firm or another exercise to help me would be VERY VERY appreciated! |

It is a lifestyle, not a fix. If you are unhappy doing it the way that you are doing it, then change your method. It is different for everyone. It took me 25 years of watching my weight to finally figure out the best way for me. The lifestyle, not the diet, that I could live with for the next 50 years. If you want to go out tonight then go. Try another method tomorrow. Or, better yet, go for a brisk walk and burn off some of those calories and then go out and have fun. Just make better choices. This is about being happy and healthy , not skinny and miserable. Good luck and let me know how it goes and feel free to email me if you need advice or just someone to rant at |

I have always had problems with constipation. As I have gotten older it has gotten worse. That was the initial reason for my healthy lifestyle change. Eating healthier has helped somewhat (I used to go about once every 10-14 days, not I go about once or twice a week). Obviously I still have a problem. I went to my gastro doc last week and she told me to take Miralax every day. It is intended to be taken over a long term period, unlike other laxatives. I started yesterday so I cannot say that it will work, but my doc was very adament that this was the solution. |

| Health & Support | protein shakes? need quick response | Apr 10 2008 14:59 (UTC) |

I am hooked on a protein smoothie that I have after my workouts on the weekend. It is a scoop of whey protein powder (23 grams of protein/2grams of fat/3 grams of carbs) , a banana, a cup of fat free milk and a bunch of crushed ice. Blend in the blender until smooth and creamy. It is about 300 calories (depending on the size of the banana), loaded with protein (milk has 9 grams), calcium and vitamins, very delicious and incredibly filling (it makes about 30 ounces with the ice and the blending). It tastes just like a banana shake so it fulfills my craving for sweets, but in a very healthy way. |

I am in the EXACT same boat. I am fluctuating between 130 and 134. I am 5' 6" medium build with decent muscle tone. I would like to get down to 125, but I cannot seem to break thru to the 120's no matter what I do. I have tried zig zagging, eating more, working out more, working out less and no luck. I usually shoot for a deficit of 500-600 cals a day and still cannot get below this weight. I have to keep forcing myself not to do something stupid like starve myself, take pills or over-exercise. I get about a 50/30/20 (carbs/protein/fat) a day (I am really OCD about this). I eat extremely healthy all the time. In 9 months I have only "cheated" once. I feel so frustrated because I am doing everything "right", but I cannot shed these last few pounds. |

| Nothing seems easier so far. I have not taken measurements yet because I am not sure that I want to know. My clothes are all too big on me right now so I cannot tell if I am toning up. I do see a physical difference as far as my arms and legs go, but I still need to get my butt and upper thighs tighter without bulking up. I tried to jog back when I first started working out, but my knees are really messed up so I was in too much pain that is why I just walk as fast as I can. I will try to mix in some Tae Bo and Pilates in place of the Firm workout, but I love the Core Fusion so much because it really kicks my butt. Does walking faster tome your muscles more or just burn more calories? | |||

| Again, thank you to everyone for your suggestions. I have increased my exercise and increased my calories to about 1400 a day and my fat intake to 20% (all good fats) and I have broken thru the wall. I weighed in today at 140 (YEAH!!!) so I am feeling a lot more convinced that I need to keep my fat and cals up and keep up the exercise (I hate to exercise!). Speaking of which, any suggestions for a fun exercise DVD that burns cals and tones the butt and thighs? I am doing Billy Blanks Tae Bo now. It is a great cardio workout and my arms look better than they have in years, but it is doing nothing for my big butt or saddlebags (I actually have always had really nice legs except for the very top outer thigh and right below my butt). I still want to keep up the Tae Bo, but I thought that it might be better to alternate days with another type of workout. I already walk on my lunch hour so I am looking for another DVD for working out. Thanks!! | |||

| Thank you everyone for all of the great suggestions and support. I am going to try kicking up the exercising with the HIIT method and adding some extra calories once a week. I will try to add some fat, but I worry so much about getting too much fat that I usually over compensate and do not get enough. I will try the nuts as a replacement snack for my Fat Free Pringles. Are all nuts created equal? I love cashews and pistachios. Are they as good for me as almonds? I know that I probably eat too much sodium, but I usually fluctuate between 90% and 120% per day, but I do drink at least 150 ounces of water a day and 30 ounces of decaf green tea a day and I do not drink any beverages with caffeine or sugar. | |||

| The calorie cycling sounds like a good idea. Thanks! I do not really have any simple carbs to give up. I mostly eat fresh vegetables, raw fish, shrimp, grilled chicken, and any pasta or bread that I eat (which is only 2-3 servings a week) is whole wheat. I also do not have any fat to give up either as I only get about 10grams of it a day. My only "treat" is a serving of Fat Free Pringles a couple of times a week, which would be very depressing to give up. But I will give the calorie cycling thing a shot. | |||

| Log EVERYTHING! That is a key component to my weight loss so far. Log everything in the morning if you can so you will know what you are going to eat for the whole day and you can plan a healthy balanced day, but also leave some room for a few "treats". Drink tons of water to keep you full, keep sugarless gum handy at all times and whenever you feel like over eating say these words in your head "nothing tastes as good as being thin feels". I have been on a weight roller coater for the last 20 years of my life and following the about steps I have managed to get myself under control, lose 40 lbs and feel wonderful about myself and my health. Also, give a shout out to friends on CC whenever you are having a weak moment, they are a great bunch of people and a wonderful support system. Good luck and keep in touch! | |||
