| Motivation | what do you do to reward yourself? | Aug 25 2009 04:10 (UTC) |

My trouble is I have as much trouble managing my time as overeating. As a part time student and full time worker, it's tricky. I'd like to make my rewards time to read a novel, time to go shopping, surf on here, etc., but I can't always. I could afford to spend a little more, as long as it doesn't involve much extra time for shopping. Maybe I'll get more junky magazines to read on the exercise equipment. I don't usually buy much makeup; but lately I buy some new makeup at the grocery store once in a while. Anyone else have suggestions that don't take much time? |

I'm still not sure why I don't feel like I get much exercise at all when I do a water aerobics class. It's hard to keep my body from floating when I'm walking or kicking, so I wonder if I float too much, which doesn't seem like it would give any exercise. If that's it, I'm not sure if I could really prevent it enough. At least my arthritis isn't so bad that I can't do exercises on land. Thanks for all the info... that's interesting about how much of your weight gets displaced. |

thanks kajikit. do you think it makes much difference to sort of stop to quickly turn around at the end of the pool? do you really need to know how to flip turn? |

the heaviest dumbbells at my gym are 25lbs, so I stopped increasing weight for squats at 50lbs. What should I ask a trainer to show me if I want to do more weight? |

That sounds similar to the knee pain I have, but I don't have the noises usually. I have arthritis I found out... I hope you don't. I saw an article linked from medlineplus http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/n atural/patient-glucosamine.html that, as best I remember, said glucosamine sulfate seemed better than chondroitin (sp?), but that could have changed since I read it. (I just looked up the link but I didn't reread it all. The Dosing section seems useful.)

how much weight do you need to use to make a difference? 40-50lbs never seemed to make a difference, but maybe I don't do it enough |

I couldn't help suggesting Medlineplus as a somewhat more reliable alternative to some of the stuff you find on google... Medlineplus indexes health information put out by government agencies, so at least you know it's not anyone who knows how to type up a website making up the information. http://medlineplus.gov/ |

Hey ccsantango. How did this post get buried? Sounds good to me though I might not post every day- a couple of times a week at least. My daily goals go to bed by 11:00-11:30 exercise keep calories good, or, if I don't count, don't snack on junk at work and keep calories reasonable at night |

eck, well, you're not the only one...I eat wehn I'm down too
I'm trying to get myself up to do an exercise video now instead of going to eat more ice cream which has been my binge food for the past few days... it doesn't feel like exercising is going to make me feel better now... I doubt it will, it's boring and it takes a week or so of doing well to make me feel better... but I did okay so far today if I don't eat too much more and I exercise, so I guess I better... So, I guess it's worth it to stick with it when it sucks anyway, just barely |

thanks everyone for the commiseration and ideas. Yeah, I used to have a hard time when I had a bf who liked to eat junk food out of the bag... then again, now I have a hard time sometimes because my healthy bf can be insensitive toward people who overeat.
Getting on here and writing about it, trying to space out my snacks so I can have some to look forward to at night without getting too many calories, drinking tea and chewing gum, going to bed a little earlier, trying to do stuff out of the house more often like going to the gym instead of working on the computer at night, and getting psyched up about eating well for a while all help a bit... when I get myself to do that stuff. The motivation from you all helps a lot! |

One day I will: Go to China Go to Africa visit the last 15 states in the US I haven't been to. learn to speak Spanish well enough to hold a conversation without the other person being very patient with me. Finish reading Thomas Pogge's book get another degree get to work on time for 2 days in a row (starting slow here) get in the habit of exercising enough so that I'm sure I've exercised plenty most week exercise in the morning... maybe get in the habit of emptying the cat litter more regularly
I promise myself I will never again Live in upstate New York. That is if I ever leave. I thought it was funny someone else put that on their list, so I just had to copy. |

I got plenty of exercise this weekend. Saturday I spent a long time at the gym, did a little more than usual with my cardio and weight lifting and then I swam for 20 minutes. It was fun. My knee hurt a little but it was better by Sunday morning. Today (Sunday) I went for a 3 1/2 hour bike ride with bf. I think I've eaten way under the calories I need so far today, but I'm not hungry, which is strange. Probably because most of what I have eaten has been after 3:00. I was pretty hungry while we were riding.

That's true, 100 calorie popcorn shouldn't count as fake food. I thought it probably had some hydrogenated poison in it, but I just looked at the ingredients on the box I have and it doesn't. Of course, I can waste less packaging when I get the motivation to use my air popper, but sometimes the ease of the microwave bags are what keep me from eating something more calorie-filled. Somehow the microwave bags just taste better, too. I don't think of skim milk or low fat dairy products as fake usually. Some low fat or lower calorie ice creams taste as good to me as the higher calorie stuff. I don't usually like low fat cheese unless it's in a dish with a lot of other ingredients. |

Thanks for the hrm endorsement stewmamma. I guess I'm afraid people will think I'm silly wearing one if they know how I eat junkfood and all, but forget them. I want one too! SW 129.8 CW 128.8 GW 125 Yay, I actually lost something! I've been very happy. It didn't stop me from eating a whole Dove bar (520 cal) and some other junk tonight unfortunately. My total calories are about 150 over for today. I've still got to try harder! I was tired tonight, so didn't go to the gym and try the jump rope, but at least I know where it is for next time. I'm planning to go for a bike ride tomorrow morning if it doesn't rain and another one Sunday maybe. I'll try for the gym or a long walk if it does rain. (hehe, the walk if it doesn't rain too hard). |

I don't have kids, but I also worry that if I ever do, I might teach them bad eating habits. Maybe it's better to at least be aware of it. It is nice to be able to communicate with you all about it! |

Veryvegan, wow, you lost a lot really quickly! Soraya, great you are sticking with it!! funykids, good luck with your son. stewmamma, have you used a hrm for long? Do you like it? Well, I was happy this morning because the scale said 126 even though I know I didn't really loose 3.8 lbs already and my weight is usually lower in the morning. It was still 127.? after work. Probably higher after what I ate tonight, but I think the scale is meandering in the right direction. I'm being a little obsessed with it now, but I think it's okay because I usually ignore it too much. I'll be happy if I at least lost a 1/2 lb since last week tomorrow. I asked about the jump rope at the gym tonight. They have some but I was there late and the room where they are was locked. Maybe tomorrow. |

I don't have a tried and true turn around tactic, so I'm looking forward to others answers. But things that sometimes work are- Reading cc for motivation Reminding myself I did it before so I can do it again Telling myself I'm a person who eats healthy, exercises a lot, etc. |

Original Post by jezebelina: My boyfriend of the past 6 months doesn't understand it either. I don't live with him, so it's a little easier than if I did I guess. But I feel like I have to hide my not so good eating habits around him, and that makes me want to indulge in my overeating even more when I'm not around him. I gained 10lbs since I started dating him, which is really a lot for me. I think I'm starting to get better, but it's hard. I'm still too embarrassed to talk to him about it. Anyone else have a problem like that? |

1. cilantro- tastes like soap to me and I heard that's a genetic thing, but I didn't hear that from a particularly reliable source, so I don't know 2. black licorice 3. marshmellow bunnies- but maybe they aren't actually a food, so: 3. hot cereal and to sneak in the one other food I don't like: brussle sprout |

Slaffer, I accidentally put my username in wrong the first time in the spreadsheet- it should be pepper654 instead of pepper456. Can you fix it? I'm not sure if I should just type it over on the spreadsheet. thxs! momof2funykids, yes, I think sometimes we all have to just eat and not worry about it.
stewmamma, I decided my "new" food for this week would be coffee without splenda in it. I managed to drink a bit this morning. bf always gives me a hard time about eating fake foods, and he's probably right. I'm not ready to give up much of them tho. Yesterday I got in 40 minutes on the bike before work. I couldn't bike tonight bcause bf wanted me to go to a friend's bday party, but I walked to the party and back. My calories have been a little over or under each day, but should still be on track to loose 1/2 lb or a little more this week. Depending on the weather tomorrow, I'll plan to bike or go to the gym and find out about the jump rope, and same thing on Friday. |

Sorry to hear your sad news, momof2funykds. It sounds like you are doing as well as you can. That challenge sounds good to me stewmamma. Jump rope, here I come. Don't know if I need to learn to like more foods, but maybe if I'm at the store and see some new veggie or something. I think I did well yesterday because I went for a good length bike ride. Today, I went kayaking in a pond with my friend. I'm very slow kayaking because I don't have good strength in my arms, so I don't get much aerobic exercise. But it was a beautiful day and we saw some herons. We went to dinner afterward and I have no idea how many calories were in the spinach/bean/cheese enchilada and sweet potato fries I ate. It was fun and I'm glad we did it. Now I have to try not to eat too much tonight before I go to bed. I'm drinking tea now to help. The scale has been up a few pounds the past few days. I hope it's just water weight. Tomorrow I'll try to exercise before work, Wednesday there's a bike ride after work, and Th & F I can bike or go to the gym after work. |

Ugh, my weight is exactly what it was last week- 129.8. Oh well, at least I saw some lower numbers on the scale during the week, so it's actually possible... Do you all stick to a certain time of day to weigh yourself? The papers that came with my scale said it's good to do it after work, but that's not always so convenient. |

I had a couple of bad eating days since I posted here last. Tuesday night after I posted and Wednesday night I lost track and just binged. I tried to remember later and guessed around 1900-2160 calories (after subtracting for exercise). Somehow, the scale didn't seem to have gone up too much when I weighed myself again (though I don't remember when that was). I did better yesterday and today. I've gotten my goal of 4 pretty good cardio sessions this week, and I'd been counting Saturday as part of this week, so I'll probably have another one after I ride my bike tomorrow. I'll start counting from Fridays after this to be in sync (sp?) with you all. I think I got the extra 45 minutes too. Now I have to go weigh myself and see if the overeating outweighed the exercise.

stewmamma, yeah, I tend to feel like Pilates is not enough of a workout, although some of the exercises are challenging. I guess I feel the need for more cardio than I get with the Pilates videos and classes I've done. There are some killer ab exercises though, and I've heard it can be more aerobic, depending on the class.
Slaffer, yeah, the time to prepare lunch for work is a pain. I feel like I spend SO much time every day when I'm trying to loose weight between preparing lunch for work, washing & cutting fruit & veggies for at home, counting calories, and exercising. That seems to be what it takes, but I hope once I get to the weight I want there's a way to cut back on the time it takes somehow a bit. Well, I didn't get up early enough for cardio this morning, but I did some weights and stomach exercises at home. I got about 25 minutes "extra" exercise walking around campus more than usual. Riding my bike to work and after work activities burned a few less calories than my usual walk to work burns. I guess I'll figure out what counts as extra exercise at the end of the week. I'm still trying for 2 more good length cardio sessions this week.
Tomorrow may be busy, but I hope I'll get to walk to work and maybe get to the gym or bicycle after work. |
