Vegetarian Why are you Vegetarian or Vegan? Aug 20 2008
00:58 (UTC)

I am vegan and I normally don't tell people, but since you asked about it, I did give you my reasons in an earlier reply.

What I do not understand is why people who don't eat beef call themselves "a type of vegetarian"  or even that weird term "flexitarian".  It isn't more humane to kill and eat one animal more so than another.  Deal with that.  My husband is an omnivore and he doesn't eat much red meat, but he knows he isn't "a special kind of vegetarian" or a "flexitarian" ..he is a meat eater which makes him an omnivore...if you need a title!

If you eat animals, you are an omnivore..plain and simple.

Or maybe a "Trenditarian"...since I guess some people really want to be called vegetarians for some reason.

Killing and eating one type of animal over another doesn't make you a vegetarian, a flexitarian or anything but an omnivore, but it is one of the reasons those of us who are vegetarians or vegans get asked so many times why we aren't eating fish or chicken...

The answer is that a vegetarian doesn't eat any meat (beef, pork, chicken fish) and a vegan doesnt eat any animal products at all.   Period.

Vegetarian Veg*ns, do your friends and family cater to your needs? Aug 16 2008

Heck no!  No one caters to my way of eating at all..except me.   When we want  go out to eat I sit quietly and listen to all the reasons they can't eat at certain restaurants because of "carbs" or "weird seasonings" and even "vegetables in the burritos..eew"...I never say a thing and I always manage to eat where ever we end up.

If we are having a picnic or BBQ, I bring my own black bean burgers and I make several vegan sides to share...they always eat the food and love it..go figure.

Vegetarian Why are you Vegetarian or Vegan? Aug 16 2008

I was one of those kids that truly hated meat.  I used to pick it out of my food and feed it to the neighbor's dog or throw it out..except tuna casserole..for some reason I loved that!  When I got caught getting rid of it, I used to get punished...I was punished a lot by my mom and the punishmenst usually involved the meat I had picked out of the food.

As I grew up I realized I didn't have to eat it, no one was forcing me any more, so I was able to become a vegetarian.  I never told anyone, I just didn't eat any meat. When I finally shared it with my family I had to listen to years of "Oh great, how can we go out to eat? What will she eat?"  I had never ever made a fuss, so I have no clue why they acted like that.

It finally dawned on me I don't like dairy products either (except cheese) so I gave that up too and became vegan.

I am happy & healthy and glad I made that decision.  My hubby is an omni and we still get along just fine.

Vegetarian Question for moral veg*ns Aug 16 2008
19:24 (UTC)
10

I am vegan and I never try to sway anyone to my way of life.  If they ask questions I do answer them truthfully, but I also watch the wording I use because I truly don't want to make anyone think I am judging them because they are different than me.  I do tell the truth though if they ask.

My hubby is an omnivore and I am sure he will always be one.  We eat very differently, but he never makes an issue about my eating even though I do occasionally nag at him a teeny bit...but with love..LOL

He has defended me to a few people and I really was proud of that.  He eats a few vegan meals a week because if I am cooking he trusts me to make something that will appeal to him, too.  He hates cooking, so I figure he is broadening his choices by eating the vegan meals...

Baby steps.  Will he ever be vegan?  Oh heck no, but he can honestly tell other omnis that vegan food is tasty and who knows,   maybe they will try a meal...

....and as far as Ladykelien is concerned, just another troll.

Vegetarian Veg*ns, do you consider yourself 'picky'? Aug 15 2008
01:33 (UTC)

I agree. I don't eat any animal products and I am not a picky eater at all.

My omni hubby is a pickey eater...doesn't like chicken or turkey  too much, doesn't like lots of veggies, won't eat pasta unless its shaped like spaghetti (oh please)

..the list goes on and on...

with me...if its not animal based, I most likely like it and eat it!

Vegetarian Vegitarians and vegans, what were/are your reasons for changing your diet? Jul 04 2008

I went vegetarian first and that was because I truly have never liked the taste or texture of meat.   It was a constant battle with my parents when I was a child, but it was such a relief to me when I moved out and could eat the way I wanted to eat.

I started finding more and more articles about the animal  cruelty part of the meat industry as I was looking for vegetarian recipes.  It was just a natural thing for me to be vegan then.  I have no regrets about my decision and there is nothing that I miss or feel deprived without.

That midriff podge - especially in very slim people - is often more due to fluid retention than it is to fat.  So rather than trying to lose weight and cut calories it can help to have a look at your diet first.

Fluid retention can be made worse if you eat foods high in salt (cheese? processed foods? ready-meals? restaurant food?  takeaways?).  Sugary foods (or excessive amounts of fruit)  are a culprit as are caffeinated drinks and alcohol.   Drink plenty of fluids... 2 litres and more if you work out so much.

I totally agree with that!  If I eat veggie burgers I have a little more of a tummy than if I eat whole foods...lots of sodium in those things, but I do still eat them once in a while and they can be handy.

I also noticed that when I was trying to lose weight and working out a lot, I lost my weight from the top down and from the bottom up...so, my legs and hips toned up and my arms, shoulders and chest toned up and my tummy was the very last thing to change.   I felt pretty depressed about it  as I was trying as hard as I could, but my trainer explained that its a common thing for women..so hang in there!  Keep working out and eating right.

Vegetarian Do you know how to cook Tofu ????? Apr 11 2008

Original Post by disease_of_ease:

queenbee805, do everything you did by draining and pressing the tofu, then cut it into cubes or stripes, whatever you prefer... marinate it or sprinkle with your favorite spices, and then bake on a cookie sheet until the edges are browned. I love BBQ sauce baked tofu. I use Annie's Naturals Organic BBQ sauce, minced garlic, and minced onion.... marinate in this mixture for an hourish in the fridge before baking and eat with a baked sweet potato and steamed veggies. Mmmmmm.

You took the words right out of my mouth!  LOL..BBQ sauce baked into tofu is my absolute favorite!   Followed closely by salsa tofu!  Drain the tofu, dice it up and pour some of your favorite salsa on it...I sometimes marinate it over night like this...the next day I put it in a big baking dish and bake it at 350 to 375 for 45 minutes to an hour...I stir it after about 20 mins  and then a few more times before its done....

So good in a whole wheat tortilla or over brown rice and black beans....use your imagination and your favorite flavors and you'll be fine...

I used to do sooo much shopping at Trader Joe's....I moved to another state and the closest one is 115 miles from my home...I miss it terribly.

I cannot find a lot of the things I was used to buying in the stores by my house.   I make hubby a huge list for Trader Joe's when he travels!

My closest "healthy" store now is New Frontiers and its a 50 mile round trip.  They are OK, but not nearly as great as Trader Joe's.

Check it out.  Just buy carefully.

it's easy to get enough protein without any animal products. i get about 50g per day, which according to multiple calculators is the right amount for my body weight, without even consuming dairy or egg products.

also, tuna is NOT a good source of protein if you take into account all the mercury going into your system.

You took the words right out of my mouth!   Tuna fishing is also very brutal to the fish and some companies still manage to kill a lot of Dolphins in the process.

I like the Morningstar products much better than the Boca products.  I love the original Gardenburger.

I tend to like the veggie burgers & black bean burgers and I do not like any of the "burgers" that are supposed to taste like a real hamburger.

I also like the Morningstar "chicken" nuggets and patties and I don't like the texture of the Boca"chicken".

I hate the crumbles though..majorly  gross..

Foods So confusing to be pulled in so many different directions!!! - Diets and exercises for body shapes, blood types Apr 01 2008

Original Post by shimmercat:

Body type, blood type, low fat, low carb... all of these diets are fad diets.  The simple answer is:

Don't pay ANY attention to those diets unless the person advocating them has a RD, LD, or DTR after their name.  An MD can be reliable... but they may also be advocating a fad diet, so take the info with a grain of salt.

Cutting out foods you love for no medical reason can make weight loss much more difficult.  If you are going to cut out foods, make sure that you have a solid reasoning behind it.  Otherwise.... stick to the info you see on this site!

I totally agree with this info!  My  EX doctor, was an Internist with Board Certifications in Internal Medicine, Oncology & Hematology.   I felt very safe going to him until one day when I showed up for an appointment.  There was a sign on the window that said "Medical Weight Loss Clinic"...I assumed my doctor had maybe moved to another office suite in the building...when I checked the directory it still showed him in the same office.  I went back and  was horrifed to discover that he was now using the office to see his regular patients and to also push diet pills and "weight loss" injections to all his "new clients".   So, he was totally just doing this for extra income.  I switched doctors and I am glad I did.

You just need to eat a healthy diet and to burn up more calories than you take in and you will lose weight.   Its not a super quick way to lose, but its the best way and it will stay off then.  Find the way of eating that you can make your way of eating for the rest of your life.  Don't look for a "diet".    Find something you can live with and stick to it...it then just becomes habit.  Don't deprive yourself!

I love the smell of BBQ's...and I love to BBQ veggies.

My hubby eats meat and the smell of it cooking doesn't bother me even though I won't eat it, but I do not like the smell of raw meat.

I don't think the "no chicken chicken patties" taste like chicken at all, but I like them.   I don't like Boca burgers or crumbles.  They have an odd texture for me.   I do love veggie burgers and black bean burgers & tofu though.

When I stopped eating meat I wondered if someday I'd be driving by someplace cooking meat and I'd just have to go in and get a burger or some chicken strips, but its never happened.  I've never even been tempted.

I have been a member of curves since April and it has helped me even when I was fighting problems from BP meds...I joined the 6 week challenge on Saturday after speaking with a member who did the challenge last year...she lost 36 lbs  (in 4 months) and has kept it off and now eats over 2000 calories  a day...she is in her 60's, so if she can do it, I can do it!

I am having trouble getting my calorie count up where it belongs and I was not eating enough protein...if I can learn how to keep my calorie count up so that my metabolism is more revved up, it will be a valuable lesson for me...I am notorious for skipping meals and starving myself....and I hate it.

I want to eat like a "normal person" and I am hoping this will help.

Good luck with your exercising!  I applaud  you for joining and I hope it works for you...I do believe that you will ultimately get out of the circuit training, what you put into it...

I do 4 circuits at every visit 3 to 5 times a week......my neighbor does 2 circuits 6 times a week...it works for both of us.

    Have fun with it, too!
