I'm female and have lifted weights for 10 years and eaten a well rounded diet of 60 carb/20 Protein/20 Fat as a rule of thumb and am not muscular and not flabby.  My conclusion is that some women are not meant to be muscular in appearance, in the natural sense.  I say go with your natural body structure, be healthy and don't pay for an expensive personal trainer.

The one thing that can be bad about coffee is if you forget to drink water and replace drinking water all day with sipping coffee.

Health & Support Do you think it is possible to love yourself without being skinny? Dec 01 2008

Everyone searches for the thing to make them truly happy. Though being fit does make you feel really good, it is not happiness itself.  That comes from within and only you hold the key.  Some are discontent their whole lives and at the end they wished they would have spent their time here being happier and enjoying the moments more.  A gorgeous woman can marry the wrong man and be miserable. A less beautiful woman can marry a man and be the luckiest woman in the world.  Either way, she has children and is destined to clean up after people for the rest of her life.  The thinner one will just look prettier as she cleans up.

Ever notice how if you lose weight people will ask you if you have been sick, or say not to get too thin, but if you gain weight no one is concerned about your health or asks about it when it is equally as damaging to gain too much?  I think parents worry for their children and want them to have a healthy self image.

Weight Loss When is it better to exercise? :) Nov 06 2008

I can be really tired when I get home from work, but if I exercise I get renewed energy and it perks me right up for the rest of the night.  It is true though if you do it too late you may have trouble staying asleep!  I, too, at times, will wake up around 3:00am feeling like I am ready for the day to begin!

Motivation Can't Abide Gyms..... Anybody with me? Nov 06 2008

There used to be a gym in LosAng I went to that had separate men and women's areas along with joint areas for both if they wanted.  I really liked the layout of that place because i felt more comfortable in the women's part.  It has nothing to do with how fit I was; just that it was more comfortable for me.  I don't go to a gym now because if I did I would never see my 4 year old daughter. At least at home I can lift weights and ride my stationary bike and get to at least talk with her and spend more time with her between stuff, and she can do it with me.  Maybe some day when she doesn't need that attention, I will go back.

Weight Loss What size pants do you wear? Oct 29 2008

It is body structure because there are chunky people who wear size 4. Some people can be heavy and have perfectly slim legs that never change or morph whether they take off or put on weight.

I'm 5'7 139 lbs and size 8 mostly.  I have bigger legs and hips proportionately that keep me out of french cut or smaller-leg jean styles.  Why don't they have some Norweigan cut jeans?

Weight Loss 1600 calories ...does this sound right? Oct 29 2008
20:54 (UTC)

That sounds right; that is what I eat. I am 46 years old and 139 lbs. 5-7".  You are shorter but younger, so that accommodates the 1600 cals. likely.  I started at 155 lbs and want to get to 130 lbs, so 9 more to go.  I lose about a pound a week at 1600 calories and exercise, and even cheat and eat more on Friday nights sometimes.  I have found that if you go slow and can eat more, it is easier to stay on track than going for 1200 calories.  I felt starved at that.  You have had more success it sounds, eating 1200 than I ever did.

I would have been so proud of my mom if she were in shape and I had friends who complimented her.  I no longer have a mom, but she was beautiful.  She lit up the room with her pearly white smile and sparkly blue eyes and I paled in comparison.

I've been watching my weight ever since high school. I have found it is the only way to be healthy; to exercise and watch what I eat.  If you want to be lean and healthy, it has to be intentional.

Weight Loss What is your favourite part about weight loss? Oct 29 2008

Definitely a feeling of accomplishment;

Actually sticking with a discipline and seeing the fruits of my labour. Learning when I fall, to get right back up and keep trying at something and never give up;

Feeling like a beautiful mom as I walk with my pretty 4 year old daughter;

I like what that one person said about honoring our generational families; our moms and our grandmas, by keeping our health up to pass on good health to our future generations;

Not having my stomach loose and hanging over my pants is probably my favorite thing of all.

I printed the chick pea recipe because someone gave it kudos.  I'm not sure what Courgette is; I will have to look it up.  I think I have everything else.

I've always envied people who like sugar free pudding, diet soda or processed food cheese.  My husband loves all that stuff and thinks I am a terrible snob/picky for turning my nose up at it.  I can't eat Lite mayonnaise or light cream cheese.  Everything for me needs to be real because I was raised in the country and had milk straight from the cow, dried fruit roll ups my mom made in the dehydrator, homemade plain yogurt we would stir honey or fruit into (never the store kind) and fresh fruit from fruit trees, strawberries and vegetables from a huge garden on our land.  The nearest store was 12 miles away, so if we ever got potato chips they would be gone the minute we got them!! It ruined me for things not real.  Can't even enjoy white flour products because they seem gooey and yucky.  My mom made whole wheat bread. Even our bread was homemade, and if anything canned it was because she canned it.  This was back in the 70's and early 80's when it was not yet in vogue to be so natural.

How about saving up wine drinking for a day on the weekend and then have 2 big glasses as a treat?  I don't see the purpose in having 1 glass.  Might as well just have a glass of grape juice.

Maintaining How can I possibly eat 1800 calories per day Oct 27 2008

I wish I had a problem eating 1800 calories a day.  I'm just so happy if I can stay under 1600 cals!  That lets me lose a pound a week if I stay at 1600 and exercise.  I've lost 15 lbs so far and if I keep it up I will hit my goal by mid January.  Mixed nuts eat up calories very fast.  I have found these forums to be very supportive and encouraging; and also happy to know there are so many  wonderful people out there who would take the time to encourage others.

Is it your period? I can almost GAGE it when I feel unloved, unappreciated and a walking failure.  Crying and feeling sorry for myself and getting it all out and praying really helps me get out my emotions and in the end makes me stronger.  Everyone makes mistakes they really regret, sometimes making them over and over before we learn, if we learn.  Keep trying, don't give up ever and realize soooo many people go through this kind of feeling.

A lot of people feel how you feel about stuff. I don't find it unusual in the least.  I speak from experience when I talk about not punishing yourself if you fail sometimes or even a LOT of times.  No one is perfect.  I've made plenty of mistakes about all sorts of things in my life but can see when I look back that I have made more and more positive choices as time has gone on.  I have learned to say "oh well" and then try again. I used to be disorganized and now I'm neater, but not super neat.  I used to not give people my full attention when they would speak, now I am conscious of it and trying to really be there in the moment and listen but sometimes I fall right back into the selfish act of not listening.  And on and on it goes.  Little self improvements carry you a long way over time if you forgive yourself for yesterday.  At 21 I binge ate too.  I got out of it by exercising a whole lot.  I am now 46 and doing that kind of thing doesn't even occur to me.  Something changed. I call it intentional self improvement over time; changing my perspective.  Someone my age looks at you and thinks of your body as brand new. Take really good care of it.

Hi Jason:

Maybe you are expecting too much of yourself and constantly feel you are failing yourself.  An altered mind promotes unhealthy eating habits too because it is more difficult to make a sound decision about food when altered.  Maybe you need some protein and that also is why you are so hungry.  Learn to love who you are with flaws and all.  People who love themselves aren't so hung up on food that they would purge it or binge it or hurt themselves over it.  Do what is right for yourself and treat yourself with respect.  If you mess up, it isn't the end of the world, just keep on trying, making a little progress at a time. For every one step back make two steps forward.  Find healthy friends who don't smoke pot. I had to distance myself from friends who were taking me down with them.  I cared deeply for them, but they were keeping me from my goals I had set for myself and finally I did not want to be tempted by their lifestyles anymore and wanted better for myself.

Instead of eating breakfast before work, I pack a few things like a handful of mixed nuts/some craisins (something with fat/protein in it), a sliced up apple, etc., so that I can snack my morning calories away here and there before lunch.  It is the morning that is the toughest for me.  I also go for losing a pound a week; that way I can eat more calories and keeps me satisfied and in the long run I am more successful losing weight slowly rather than rapidly.  Vitamin D3 helps too, and lots of water.

Brown rice, squash with lemon pepper, cabbage and chicken breast.  I took a bite of the squash with lemon pepper and decided I'm sick of this meal!  Beans. I make beans in a crock pot and I'm tired of those too.

You guys are all too skinny when you repeat your weights on this site. What has happened to our society that women have to suffer this way? I am 5'7" and 138. Albeit I do plan on getting to 130, that is good enough. Men put unrealistic expectations on us. I say thumb your nose and put on a big smile!

Just keep doing it.  I have the same problem as you do.  Maybe we shouldn't get on the scale for 3 months at least.  Just keep on working out and eating the calories you eat.  It HAS to be of benefit to your body over time because you are doing something different consistently to it to improve it.  I'm not weighing for 3 whole months and I'm going to keep on eating 1500 cals a day and working out.  Don't give up.  Maybe we should meet back here in 3 months to see if it made a difference!

I agree with you they don't fill you up, and pretty soon you are hungry again.  I'm not sure quite how you would fit them in. They are too high in calories for just a snack to me.  But it is true. Eat one of those instead of a candy bar and know you are getting some vitamins. They are so good.

I like them once in awhile for breakfast.  I'd say they are good enough to be a meal replacement and a little too high in calories to use for a snack, at least for me.  For snacks I like about 10 almonds, or a 100 calorie yogurt, or a salad or fruit.
Weight Loss Trying to lose 10 lbs. forever club Aug 09 2007

I'm 44 yrs old with 5 children, 5'7" and started 10 days ago at 148 lbs.  I have been trying to get back in the 130's forever. I have been eating 1500 calories a day for the past 10 days and have done lots of exercising which includes cardio and weights. I got on the scale today and it said 148 lbs after 10 days of hard work dieting and exercising.  I'm so tired of trying to get smaller, I've tried my entire life and never gotten as trim as I wanted, but only  a handful of glorious times and then gained it back.  I am thinking I will just continue to eat the 1500 calories and working out trying to increase my fitness level and just say screw it to the weight loss.  Maybe if I keep this up long enough, it will happen for me and I don't want to be discouraged just because the weight isn't coming off.  In the meantime, I will be increasing my nutrition and fitness level regardless of weight.  Maybe that is the answer for me.  Any other time, I've quit exercising after the weight doesn't go down either way.  Now I'm ready for the first time to forget about the weight and concentrate on fitness and nutrition.  The scale disappoints.  Anything less that 1500 calories will turn me into a ravenous animal. 1500 calories is the smallest amount I can do comfortably.

It happens to a lot of people, don't let lack of weight loss sabatage you.  My sister had that happen where she wasn't losing weight, then all of a sudden after about a month, she started losing the weight.  Just keep doing what you are doing consistently, and eventually you will see good things happen.  Your body probably needs some time to adjust itself to the changes, and getting itself in gear.  It takes time to get a slow metabolism and lack of muscle to respond to a new regime.
