welcome to the club, mc! here are some great resources for the newly daignosed: Safe list: http://www.celiac.com/articles/181/1/Safe-Glu ten-Free-Food-List-Safe-Ingredients/Page1.htm l Unsafe list: http://www.celiac.com/articles/182/1/Unsafe-G luten-Free-Food-List-Unsafe-Ingredients/Page1 .html And keep in mind that the blood tests have a high rate of false negatives, so if you get a negative, don't give it up. If you don't want to do an endoscopy, try testing through enterolab.com, which is an at home test with a much higher rate of accuracy. Unfortunately it's $150 out of pocket. Of course, the best test is how you feel after being gluten-free for a month or two!! Regardless of your results on any test(s) I recommend trying the diet. |

there are more sillys on here every day! I'm one, but I'm 16 :) STAY AWAY FROM THAT GLUTEN!!! I reccomend checking out glutenfreeforum.com, it's got all kinds of good info
manic, celiac is an autoimmune disorder where if you eat any gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and oats) your body attacks the villi of your intestines, which are hairlike projections that absorb nutrients. Even a tiny bit of gluten (ie using the the pan in which someone just cooked normal pasta) can make us really sick. |

You also get a fair amount of excercise in a day of school- don't discount those five minutes between classes you have to sprint across three floors carrying 20lbs of books!! Maybe go for a walk or jog on the weekends to compensate. |

I'm a fan of banana smoothies...taste just like milkshakes! A little cinnamon, vanilla extract, and some rice milk (real milk if you can do it, I can't) and maybe a scoop of protein powder and there's breakfast! |

| molly- totally! My two year old nephew lives with us some of the time, and when he was younger i used to snack on these while feeding him :-) they do kinda dissolve though because they're made for babies w/o teeth, so they might not hold up. but flavor wise, sure! they're like dried fruit kinda. except the water is replaced with air if that makes any sense LOL!! | |||

most of it's probably water retention. drinking water will help flush this out. also the pill messes with your appetite, so try to get that in check- eat at least three meals (or even 5 or 6 small ones) a day, and practice portion control. other than that, there's nothing special about birth control weight. i gained when i first went on it too because i had cravings to no end...and no self control. poke around this site to learn how to count calories (if you want) and create a defecit. but as teens, 1200 calories (small ADULT female minimum) is way too low, i'd say 1500 minimum for a shorter teen girl. just word on losing it fast...don't. healthy, sustainable weight loss is sloooooowwww. 1-2 lbs a week at most, though the water weight will come off fast at first. trying to lose weight fast is setting yourself up for failure. |

our school went through this major "wellness policy" makeover where basically everything now has to be healthy. that means no fries, smaller bagels, cookies, etc., only baked chips and other healthy snacks, no ice cream, no soda, teacher's can't give out candy, no selling junk food for fundraisers, etc. as you might imagine, it pissed a lot of people off. i can't eat school food anymore because of my celiac disease, but I didn't think it was that bad. We have four lines: bar line- things like baked potato bar, nacho bar, they also sell chicken patties, hot dogs, etc. your typical school food, but made a little better for you. once in a while they have an AMAZING salad bar once in a while but not very often stiry fry- this used to be my favorite. it was chicken, meatballs, shrimp, or beef with stir fry veggies over rice in one of several chinese sauces pizza/pasta- pretty self explanatory. ravioli, manicotti, calzones, pizza, etc. deli- most meats on most types of bread- but no white, and the rolls are majorly downsized you can also get premade salads but they're pretty much just iceberg lettuce and whitish tomatoes. for snacks they have baked chips, pretzels, chex mix, granola bars, fruit juice, small soft pretzels, bagels, cookies, fruit, things like that. all the milk is lowfat or skim. |

my dad was involved in a serious car accident 20 some odd years ago, and to make a long story short, he has half of his spine fused. about 5 years ago, a gym opened up near us. my dad has always loved swimming, and decided to give it a go. he had to use a snorkel at first because roatry breathing was tough on his back, and he started out very slow. but fast forward to now: his back pain is all but nonexistent, he no longer has to wear his back braces, he is 40+ lbs lighter, and much healthier overall. he swims almost every day, and he swims a LOT...idk the yards, but it's well over a mile, sometimes over 2. get advice from your doctor before starting anything, and maybe see about physical therapy as well. good luck! |

| Vegetarian | Veg*n Gripe!! | Jan 19 2008 16:34 (UTC) |

i think the problem is that some vegetarians or vegans set bad examples and only eat carbs or fat. potato chips are vegetarian! so is white rice! so is cheese with mayo on white bread! (not vegan, but I have a veggie friend who lives off this stuff). while it can be a bit more challenging to eat a balanced diet as a vegetarian or vegan, and you do have to put more thought into it, it is possible. that said, it wouldn't kill most carnivores to put a little more thought (and veggies!) into their diets.... just some thoughts from a veggie-loving occasional meat eater.... |

| ok, you're starting to show signs of disordered eating by obsessing. try to stay off cc for a day or two. if you physically cannot help but control your food to a tee, then talk to a doctor. and you have to eat 3500 calories MORE than you burn to gain a pound. so if you are burning 3000 a day, which if you're an athlete as a teen, isn't so far fetched, you'd need to eat 6500 calories in a day. | |||

i've done it, on high, 2:20 in my microwave but that will vary...make sure you don't use TOO big of a bag (slightly smaller normal grocery bags work) and WATCH!!!! i once popped a bag in, went to the bathroom, came back a minute later and found that my kitchen was filled with smoke!! whoops, burned a hole in the bag...but if you keep an eye on it, and take it out if you start to smell burning you should be fine. just be wary of folding the bag too much as this can cause burning |

| yes, starch is a simple carb...but that doesn't mean you should avoid it completely, as many healthy vegeatbles, like carrots and peas, are starchy. just watch how much of it comes from white flour or things like white rice | |||
| Motivation | What triggers the desire to eat (if not real hunger) and what 'turns you off?' | Jan 18 2008 02:58 (UTC) |
|
| if i eat fresh fruit for dessert, i feel satisfied and generally good afterward. but if i let my willpower cave and eat something salty/starchy, especially after dinner, it leads to more and more bad stuff followed by remorse and bloating and just generally feeling yucky. so if i want to eat for the sake of eating, ill cut up an apple into teeny pieces, and by the time i'm done, i'll feel great, satisfied, and will have just eaten fiber and vitamins instead of grease and salt :-) | |||

| its definitely not impossible to build muscle on a calorie defecit. when you first reduce calories, it's fairly easy. after a while, it will become more difficult to close to impossible. but it can be done, especially at first. ask MANY CCers :-) | |||
| Foods | Cloned meat......are you going to eat it? | Jan 16 2008 21:42 (UTC) |

| *points at above post* what they said. we eat cloned stuff all the time. and while the idea seems a little creepy, if there is nothing wrong with the cloned DNA, then there won't be anything wrong with the meat. it's not like they're synthesizing DNA from chemicals, only copying it in the same way the body does. that said, i don't know that i necessarily agree with the principles of cloning in general, but health-wise, i'm not SO worried. by the way, if it weren't for genetic modification (which i'm not a proponent of, but this is something to consider) we would likely have severe crop shortages/failures...think twice, do your research on these topics | |||
| Fitness | How can i go from doing 2 pushups to doing 27 push ups??? | Jan 16 2008 21:35 (UTC) |

| build up to it. do them on your knees, leaning against the back of a chair, against a coffee table, etc. make it a goal to do 27 a day...start with the two normal ones you can do, then do the rest modified. when you feel ready, add another normal one, and so on and so forth. | |||
