Snowshoeing is so much fun, and such a great workout. Make sure you try on the snow shoes with your boots - on my boot / snow shoe combination the straps of the snow shoes slide off the boots when I go downhill, and it gets very frustrating.

I agree with andesite that the boots are very important, I tried doing it with my regular hiking boots and had icy feet, and resorted to buying winter hiking boots - which are the ones I now have the problem with. But at least my feet are warm while I slide down the hill cursing! Wink

Weight Loss Hate going out to dinner? Oct 11 2007

When we go out, I try to look at the menu before and decide what I have before I go there. Also, I usually try to stick with appetizers. There are a few restaurants that we go to on a fairly regular basis, a French one and California Cafe, and their appetizers are better than their meals anyways! California Cafe has this tuna sashimi appetizer that's very yummy, plenty of food, and really filling. The French restaurant has great salads (light on dressing or dressing on the side please), and mussels steamed in white wine sauce - barely any cals.

The part that's hard for me is the bread and oil or butter that they bring before the meal, I looooove bread and it's easy for me to go on a mini-binge there.

I think the grilling / BBQ part is good, you can throw on a steak for him and skewer some nice marinated shrimps for you. Cook him a potato and yourself a sweet potato, mash both of them on the plate with a bit of butter for him and a bit of flavored milk for yourself.

Or how about grilled chicken?

I've made burgers that are cheating burgers, i.e. half lamb or buffalo and half turkey, mixed with very finely chopped dry sauteed(?) / fried(?) mushrooms. Added a bit of feta to give it some more flavor, on the BBQ they went. Served in whole wheat pita, with a bit of tsatsiki and a bit of greens and tomatoes. I liked it so much that I made it at a party, where one of guests was a Midwestern meat and potatoes guy and he wolfed down the burgers without even thinking that they may be healthy.

If he doesn't like the whole wheat pita just give him standard burger buns and processed cheese.

And with the winter coming, there's a whole world of soup coming. Does he eat lentil soup? Put a sausage in for him, you get the soup. Chili with black beans? Give him two bowls, you get one, you just put onions on top and he also gets the cheese...

Wow, all you guys are so amazing. I lost a measly 20 some pounds, down from 165 at the end of July 2007, now at 143.5 on October 9.

I did it because I was slowly creeping back up from an earlier effort where I went to 150 and kept it for several years, but the trigger was that I signed up to hike through the Grand Canyon and figured that every pound I didn't have on me wouldn't have to be carried back up.

It was very impressive when I packed my backpack this Sunday, with two sleeping bags, a tent, a Thermarest pad, some food, and a change of clothes, stepped on the scale with clothes and shoes AND WAS AT 163.5!!! That's 1.5 lbs lighter than I was butt naked before I started! And it's a friggin' big backpack!

Can't stand oatmeal from rolled oats, the texture is just soooo wrong. However, I've been making steel cut oats, which work much better for me. I usually throw in some apple or pear cut finely, and some spices (today it's cinnamon and allspice), cook it, then add some milk before serving and some raw sugar - yum! Today I tried prepping it the night before: Added everything to the pot, then brought it to a boil once and let it stand. It looks ok, and will cut down cooking time in the morning. I'll report if it's a disaster.

Luckily no health issues here, but a very supportive husband who likes to loose weight with me.

First time, for the big drop: A group of colleagues around me started a Weight Watchers at Work program and asked me whether I would join. I declined, saying that I could do without paying somebody to tell me to eat less. And I did, I lost 40 or more pounds (never weighed myself at the max and can just guess), beating everybody in the Weight Watcher group and keeping it off for 5 years.

Over the last 2 years the scale was creeping up. We planned a trip to and into the Grand Canyon, and I figured that I needed to work very hard on the way out, and that things would be much easier if I dropped that additional weight. Found this website and dropped 20 pounds, lower than I was the last time around. I feel great, look forward to the hike, and am just fighting to get the last stubborn pounds off.

And another motivator was a hike with a friend who almost never works out, but made it up the mountain faster and easier than I did. Did I mention I'm competitive?

Purespark has all my favorite flavorings listed:

  • Chocolate
  • Beer
  • Coffee

Sometimes I use all, sometimes only one of them. They'll do the trick. And nobody will guess it.

And I use masa harina instead of standard corn flour to thicken it, which definitely gives it some interesting flavor along with the thickening....

Welcome Colleen,

My husband loves to diet with me because I then take more time cooking, no more hurried bread and cheese and wine dinners, not that they aren't good. I put a lot of Epicurious and Foodtv recipes through the recipe analyzer, and usually all it takes is cutting out some of the fat, staying with chicken and fish, and using lots of veggies.

For starters, I've adapted a Rachel Ray salad dressing: Pop half a pint of cherry tomatoes in the oven until the pop. When they are done put them in the bowl, add a tablespoon or two of good Dijon mustard, a tablespoon or two of Balsamico, and a bit of olive oil, stir everything, breaking down the tomatoes. I use it with butter lettuce and some sliced red onions, and it's sooo delicious!

Hubby was 5 pounds heavier this morning than 2 days ago. We had pretty salty food yesterday, and spent a long time in the car, coming home close to midnight. No way it's fat, although we didn't eat great he didn't eat 10.000+ calories, and no way it's muscle, all we did was a pretty nromal upper body routine. It's possible for guys to retain water... lol

I think the increase in food (and hence sodium) and the increase in weight training can easily lead to water retention in your case.

I ran out of bread or any other starch at dinner with the father-in-law the other day, but I had some Masa Harina (basically corn meal that has undergone some sort of lime treatment) that I had bought to thicken chili. So - I decided to try to make tortillas as a bread on the side, the recipe is dead simple, mix 2 cups of masa harina with 1 1/4 cup of water. Detailed instructions are here: http://mexicanfood.about.com/od/techniques/ss /maketortillas.htm

They were sooooo yummy, I had to make seconds! And since you make them without additional fat they're pretty good for you, too: 2 cups yield 12 tortillas, one is 70 calories and just shy of 2 g of fiber!

Fitness CC rollerblading calories burned... Sep 23 2007
03:59 (UTC)
I compare it to how much cals the machines in the gym say I burn: If I work up a good sweat it usually around 600 cals. Which compares pretty well with the numbers it gives here. If I rollerblade really hard (we often go on a path where there's a lot of wind, so one direction is very hard and my heart rate goes above 160) I assume I'm burning 600 cals/hour. If I just troll along I figure it's 350 or so.I used a Polar HR monitor with cal measuring for a while, and that jived with these numbers as well, both rollerblading and in the gym.

Weight Loss keeping track of cals? Sep 20 2007

I try to track everything, pretty close to when I eat it. When I go to a restaurant I try to track the ingredients, people have caught me trying to figure out if the salad dressing is lean or oily. My rule is that if in doubt throw in an extra tablespoon of oil. But then there are times when I just plug in a number, after tracking calories for a while I feel fairly comfortable. When I cook and taste while cooking I don't count it, I just make sure that I take a bit less than what I accounted for in the beginning.
Weight Loss Do people generally look down on fat/ overweight people? Sep 18 2007

I judge overweight people. And other people.

We have a few very overweight people in the gym, and I applaud their every move. When we go hiking or biking, and I see somebody overweight that's walking or biking, I applaud them, thinking that it must be so much harder than what I'm doing.

But - I had a colleague who was obese, and would complain constantly that it was a hereditary condition. And then he would sit with a Costco tub of Chocolate Chip cookies in his cube, and they'd be gone by lunch. And for lunch we'd go to Fresh Choice, a buffet where it starts with salad, but in the back they also have pizza and pasta and bread. Everybody would pile on the greens and the veggies, and he'd have a plate full of potato salad and macaroni salad and an extra plate with pizza. Hereditary. Right.

This is a great thread - it should be stickied to encourage newbies! Congrats everybody!

I lost 20 pounds in about 2 months. Cal intake between 1200 and 1600 (counting obsessively), lots of fruit and veggies, next to no white carbs, next to no cheese Cry, mostly preparing meals, limiting the dining out. The food is real good, we even excited a visiting father-in-law into starting to loose weight after he saw what we ate and how good it was.

Excercise between 30 and 60 minutes every weekday, and either long workouts or lots of gardening, or work on the house (i.e. painting, tiling...) on weekend days.

ssmccay, I believe that sizes have changed over the years. At 145 my size 6 pants are all a bit big, they fit well when I was at 150. At 157 it was a size 8 / 10 depending on the store.

It may depend a bit on your specific shape, too, while I have broad shoulders my hips are fairly narrow. I have a friend that's about the same height, weight and amount of muscle as me only fits into a size 10.

Great question - there are so many shorter lighter women here that I was wondering as well. My goal keeps moving. First it was 150, where I knew I could maintain for a long time. But the pounds are still coming off, I'm now just above 145, which was my new goal, and I think I'll try for 135 so I have some leeway to bounce back to 145, where I feel great.

Ok, I'm bored, so I'll try. Should give an advance warning that I'm not super good with exact recipes, they are more general guidelines.

1. Easiest/quickest

Must be salad: Arugula + Radicchio, some finely cut onions, a tomato or two, with my vinaigrette consisting of 2 tsp of really good mustard, Dijon, or Dijon with some taste to it, 4 or so tsp of Balsamico, and 1 to 2 tsp of olive oil, or pumpkin oil if you have.

2. Healthiest

Hm. How do you define healthiest? How about:

Grilled chicken breast on top of wilted spinach? The chicken breast I'd rub with some chopped rosemary, lemon zest, and pepper, and then put it on the grill. I'd make the spinach by sauteeing 2-3 cloves of garlic and some chilies or pepper flakes, and then putting two bunches of well washed spinach in the same pan until it's wilted, and add a pinch of salt before serving.

3. Tastiest

Uhhh, I made some Moussaka yesterday that is my new favorite. It made a pot that filled my husband, father in law and me and we had leftovers for lunch. We could have eaten it all though, it was so good. Here's what I did:

2 Eggplants, cut in slices, put on a very lightly oiled baking sheet and stick in the oven at 375 degrees until nice and cooked and collapsed. I had loads of tomatoes, so I took 6, cut them in half and put them on the baking sheet with the eggplants. Not really necessary, though.

1 onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, chopped

1 lb ground buffalo (will probably work well with lamb as well)

1 lb chopped mushrooms

Cook all four in large skillet until well browned, breaking ground meat up in little pieces. To reduce fat you could take the meat out when it's done and let it sit on a paper towel until the fat has drained. Then return to pan, add 1/2 cup red wine, 2 oz tomato paste, nutmeg, cinnamon, a chopped chili, oregano and whatever other herbs you have. Let everything simmer.

In a THIRD pan (didn't say it was easy...) start the sauce.

2 tbsp olive oil

3 tbsp whole wheat flour

1 cup nonfat milk

nutmeg, pepper, or some more chili

Heat oil, whisk in flour, then stir well and slowly add milk, let it simmer a bit. Add spices.

6 oz low fat feta, 1/4 cup grated Parmesan

Prepare big pan, oil or spray lightly

Put layer of eggplant and some chopped tomatoes if you did them on bottom, then add meat, then feta. Repeat layers, then top with sauce, then with Parmesan. Stick the whole thing in the oven at 350 F for 60 minutes.

(Clean all the damn pans while you're waiting for the Moussaka )

Yum!!!

4. Best overall

Hm. Have to think about that.... will get back if the above get approval...

Weight Loss How much harm in wine drinking? Sep 14 2007

Same here, no effect on weight loss, plus it's all about it being a lifestyle change. And I can't seriously do a lifestyle change if I means that I have to cut out alcohol. All within it's limits, but a glass or two a night is factored into most of my days, otherwise I simply wouldn't stick with it.

amora: Yours sounds yummy, I'm envious.

Have the father in law in town so need to cook proper meals. Today we had leftover barley salad (with mushrooms, onions) with leftover chicken liver (in a tomato carrot celery sauce) stuffed into red peppers, and then baked with some parmesan on top. Made a bit of a sauce and poured it over so it was less dry.

Super high in fiber due to the barley, and otherwise healthy as well, about 250 calories for half a pepper. Not bad, for both for leftovers and little calories.

(btw, I'm just so itiching to ask: Do you thank the cook for the meal?) ('cause of course, as you can guess, he just sits down and eats, no word of thanks or that it tastes good or anything....)

Weight Loss Years To Get In Shape?? Sep 10 2007

fluffyveed,
It's not too late to get in shape (I hope it'll never be too late!). I have a very similar story to you, was very fit in high school, then left for university, didn't care anymore, gained a lot of weight (190 lb or so on 5'8"). With 33 I moved to California where everybody was fit, so I started working out, still not loosing weight though. I eventually decided that I had it and went on a "eat less work out more" diet.
Within 4 months I not only shed about 40 pounds, I also got into the best shape of my life. We are mountain biking often, and I left 25 year old guys in the dust!
Just get started and find a workout buddy, and keep it up - and do lots of new stuff, too! Perhaps you find something that you can set as a goal: We'll hike through the Grand Canyon in October, so when I realized my weight had cropped back up, and my shape had gotten worse I had a very good reason to shed the pounds and get back in shape. Wanna come along? :-)
