| temptation is hard...he's older, showing you attention, and plus it's a hot, juicy secret - all the ingredients for a disaster. My advice? Find another guy. He's prolly crappy in bed anyways. Not that I'm advocating teen sex. I neither condone or endorse. Thank god I'm not a teenager anymore. |

| The Lounge | Choosing your career | Dec 06 2007 15:55 (UTC) |

| Cool! I studied Environmental Science as well. I went to graduate school because I did not feel inspired by any of the jobs available (mainly lab jobs). Now, I'm about 3 years out of grad school, and I'm thinking about going back for my phd, mainly because I think I would prefer to be a career student. But I can relate to what you are saying tho, I definately chose this field because I wanted a career that I felt served a purpose, versus earned money. However, what I am really struggling with now is that that very purpose is so abstract (saving the earth, etc) it's hard to feel a sense of satisfaction or accomplishment. | |||

| please don't get me started on grammar. i live deep in the south - about an hour south of savannah, so i loved that joke scguy - and we can't say anything right, and we sure as sugar don't know how to work verbs. We say things like "i done..."and "I seen ...". And we call every male bubba. So I often hear things like "that there bubba, I seen him once done hunt himself a nice coon". No joke, I heard that comment just last week in my office (and btw, i work for an institution of higher learning). The verb misuse grates on my nerves, but I do love a nice southern twang and i love to say "I'm fixin' to ...". |

| I got a $90,000 masters degree in environmental economics and policy from the top-ranked school in the nation in this field and now work in a crappy job making less than half of that a year. brilliant planning on my part. i love my field...especially now that it's cool to be 'green'. I just dislike my current position. I hope to someday get my phd and research/teach but that is definately a few years down the road. |

| Can I just say that I miss my mom? I'm a grown woman, and this is not my first thanksgiving away from my parents (it's my second), but man, I've been grouchy all day just knowing that I'm not going to see my parents on thursday. bummer. my plan for turkey day is to wake up early, as usual, and run the big bridge in our town, which is the only elevation in our coastal paradise. It's about a 3 mile roundtrip run and will, embarrasingly enough, take me about 45 minutes to traverse. Usually thursdays are spin class days, but the gym is closed and I thought this would be a nice *treat*. Then my DH and I are headed an hour south to meet my grandmother, aunt & unlce at my grandma's retirement village to eat at their cafeteria. (so I will at least be with some family for the holiday). I'm not sure what to expect food-wise, but I am anticipating lots of soft foods... |

| The Lounge | shot at love with tila tequila!!! | Nov 20 2007 15:47 (UTC) |
15 |
| I don't watch the show religiously, but I will indulge if it's on and there is nothing else on. It's a guilty pleasure, for sure. However, what really bugs me, is in the episode where tila introduces the boys and girls to each other, and she is all like "i've never told anyone this before" and "this is me coming out for the first time", and I'm sitting here thinking, no it isn't. You obviously told someone you were bi cuz you made a freaking show about it. You can't be that conflicted on the issue if you are willing to do it on tv. Seriously, get over yourself. But otherwise, it's awesome, cheap thrills. |

| I think that sounds like a plan, slowly add time and make sure to keep the pace easy. I always thought rubbing ice on my shin splints felt good, too (not sure if they did anything). I got some paper cups and filled with water and put in the freezer, then after a run would tear off the top of the cup and rub in my shins. And stretching post-run. Good luck! | |||
| The Lounge | Dating a Mexican? | Nov 14 2007 16:08 (UTC) |

| i love this topic! My husband is hispanic - costa rican. but most of his (latin) friends here in the US are mexicans, so he is heavily influenced by their eating styles and accents. In fact, his family now makes fun of his 'mexican' accent which drives him crazy. but i digress. his eating style is at once much better and much worse than mine. Let's just say I've gained at least 70lbs since we met! And he's gained approximately 5 lbs in that time period, and he's a skinny guy. He loves rice and beans at every meal, altho lately that hasn't been the case. He/we eat lots of chips, but with yummy home-made salsa and guacamole. We always have to have a meat dish with dinner. When he cooks he cooks with A LOT of oil. But he loves almost all fruits (and so true, he will put salt and/or lime on everything, fruit included). So it's been a hurdle to adjust my new eating style to his eating preferences. I still make rice a few times a week, but I rarely eat it. I tried to make brown rice, he hates it. I limit my chips or try to eat those yummy, healthy, home-made dips with healthier options. And I cook primarily, which sux, but he still doesn't understand the concept of cooking spray versus oil and he over-seasons everything. So if I want to eat healthier, taste-y foods, I have to cook them. I wonder if he does that on purpose to get out of the cooking duties? hmm... |

at a local custard shop (it's like ice cream), one of the employees sliced a finger off and it was immediately served (the custard making machines are really, really fast so this is feasible). the customer who received the severed finger in his bowl refused to give the finger back to the employee as he wanted it as evidence for suing. well, as it turned out, that customer did sue but LOST his case because it was ruled an accident. However, the employee sued the customer and WON because the employee would have maybe been able to have the finger re-attached had the customer given the finger back. Moral of the story: always give the finger back. Edited to add: i don't know all the particulars, but the employee who lost his finger was in the backroom, and the 'custard-making machine' separates the backroom from the serving area, and it's all very loud. So the employee who was serving the custard did not know that one of his/her co-workers had just severred a finger for a few minutes. |

| Fitness | Whats your workout routine like? | Nov 02 2007 18:53 (UTC) |

| My routine, which I've kept since late July, is: Mon/Wed/Fri Warmup with a 5-10 minute easy walk on treadmill Weights - either back/bi's, chest/tri/shoulders, or legs 30 min jog with 5 min walk warmup and cooldown (usually end up jogging about 2.5 miles, walking .5 mi). I vary the speed on the treadmill, and sometimes I go a little longer than 30 minutes. Tues/Thurs Spin class Sat Weights Spin class Sun Sometimes long run (now that I'm training for a 1/2 marathon this will become regular) 1 mile swim Every now and again I'll take a tuesday or thursday off to recover, or I'll just walk on the treadmill on mondays if I've done an especially hard run that sunday. this routine needs to be tweaked to incorporate the 1/2 marathon training, which will start in earnest after thanksgiving. I workout first thing in the morning, it's the only way I'll get it done, except on sundays when the gym doesn't open til 1. |

| I used to be a smoker and work-out all the time. It didn't exactly affect me during the workout, but I hated the post-workout coughing or wheezing. Coincidentally, I've been craving a smoke for 2 days now. I quit last december. Argh. I know it's stress related and it will pass but I'm so tempted to go get a menthol treat. |

| I'm not even sure this is a P/U line, because I don't know what it means - so any thoughts would be a appreciated! This was at the gym where i have a semi-flirtatious friendship with this man there, but we are both married so we keep it pretty PG-13 rated. Man: Do you know what a fat cat is? Me: Um, no Man: Well I think you have one, and I want you to show it to me someday Me: *shrugs and walks away* Of course I'm thinking it has something to do with that synonym for cat and a woman's body part, but that doesn't make sense because I obviously have one of those, why would he 'think' I have one? And at first I thought it was an insult, too, with the whole 'fat' thing in there, but he is not that type of guy. Then I felt very unhip and uncool for not knowing the slang. |

| I love this thread! I can't set my alarm clock to a multiple of 5. Right now it's 5:41. I avoid stepping on cracks to the best of my ability. I eat one food at a time on my plate. If i'm eating something like M&Ms or skittles I eat one color at a time. I touch metal (usually my keys) when going over railroad tracks. I kiss my hand then touch the roof of my car when i see a padiddle (a car with only one workign headlight) I touch the roof of my car when running a yellow light. I always tap the opening of a can of soda twice before cracking it open. That's all I can think of for now. |

| I've been married for almost 4 years and I still don't know how to read the signs. BUT, kudos to you for not settling for anything less than you deserve. When I was your age, I definately just threw myself at any and all guys and took what I could get, usually the big LOSERS. I just didn't really care, I just wanted to be with someone, ANYONE, I was the epitome of desperate insecurity, mainly filled by lack of self-esteem and worth. Just be yourself. And put yourself in situations to meet guys, you know? Don't always rely on the guy approaching you, sometimes you will have to start the conversations. At some point, you will meet someone and that spark will ignite and one thing will lead to another... And don't settle. |
