What the 30% means is that, depending on how many calories you eat a day, 30% (or less) should come from fats.

Example: Let's say you eat 1000 Calories a day (I HOPE NOT!)

300 of those calories would have to come from fat.

Fat: 1 gram = 9 calories.

Protein: 1 gram = 4 calories.

Carbohydrates: 1 gram = 4 calories.

Totally understandable. Not everyone has the luxury. Definitely just go to a local pharmacy (rather than the pharmacy part of a store such as Duane Reade/Shop Rite/etc) and ask them about your symptoms.

Kezza, I agree with you.  OP, go to Mary's advice column to read what she has to say about spicy foods raising the metabolism, and chunkylard; do a Google search about this subject.  As Mary will mention in her advice; the increase is minimal for a brief period of time.

kthx I did.

Whatever you do, if you're looking for a thermogenic effect from food, don't think that caffeine from sugar-laden sodas is going to somehow create a deficit in calories and result in weight loss.

Black coffee/unsweetened green tea is the way to go.

Weight Loss 1 And Confused! Mar 21 2009

Well if you're truly doing something as high-intensity as soccer, then the only plausible explanation for your current weight has to be that you're simply eating too much.

Either that or you have an underactive thyroid (possible, but not likely.)

Use some of the tools on this site.

http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/calories-bur ned.php

According to the calories-burned calculator, "You burn 2900 calories during a typical day. Remember that this estimate is based on your body weight, height, age, gender, and your average level of activity. "

I said you have a moderate activity level because I imagine you don't play soccer every single day.

As long as you're eating less than 2900 calories, you should be gradually losing weight.

I'm guessing you're referring to thermogenesis.

Simplified: Basically what that means is that eating certain foods expends energy (heat [calories]) and thus causes you to actually burn more calories than you're taking in. Some spicy foods, vegetables and stimulant "foods" cause you to burn more calories than you're taking in. i.e. spices such as cayenne pepper, paprika, certain peppers, black coffee, unsweetened green tea, cold water, lettuce and celery.

Coffee/Green tea - Caffeine burns calories.

Spices/Peppers - Eating spicy foods increases body temperature which is why you're burning extra calories.

Lettuce/Celery - Since these vegetables are so low in calories, the amount of energy you use to digest these foods is more than the amount of calories actually contained in the food.

In regards to the validity of that, not entirely sure. (And if it is true, the deficit in calories is probably negligible.)

You realise that it's just as rude for you to pick on them for eating badly as it is for them to pick on you for eating healthily, right?  If you want them to leave you to eat what you want, it might be best not to criticize their groceries.

Yeah, I don't know about that.

When you tell someone they should eat more "health" foods, it's coming from a place of concern.

When someone tells you you worry too much about your health and you should eat what you want, it's coming from a place of carelessness.

If you were a mother of an overweight child, would you tell your child "OF COURSE you should eat more cake. Don't worry about it. You're perfect the way you are. Don't let those mean salad-eating stick people get to you." ?

(P.S. that was a rhetorical question. You don't have to answer it, but if you said yes, you'd be a horrible mother.)

Weight Loss Is anyone else bothered by the sheer amount of ignorance in regards to weight loss? Mar 18 2009

Original Post by ibez:

OP, the ignorance is coming from your camp, honestly. The macronutrient breakdown of what you eat effects what you lose and what you store. If you consumed a diet of high fructose corn syrup, for example..; you'd lose weight... but you'd gain fat. Low carb is almost to the point of being esoteric among common layman knowledge. People opt for low fat options (For example, yogurts full of sugars to replace the lost taste), which is the last thing they should be doing.

Calories in vs. calories out is a much more complicated equation than just what you eat. Here's a detailed article relating to that: http://www.johnberardi.com/articles/nutrition /new_view.htm

Don't parade around like an expert until you've done actual meaningful research. Proper carb management is an important part of sustained weight (But more importantly.. FAT) loss.

By the way... "thyroid problem" itself is schpiel... people parroting that have absolutely no idea what it means or whether it's even a real, tangible medical "condition"... and not just the regular function of the thyroid that reacts to the person's lifestyle.

I wouldn't recommend drinking Lipton or Snapple green tea. They put a bunch of sugar and sweetners into it and make something that is completely healthy, into something that isn't.

Best advice is to brew your own cup of green tea. Unsweetened. It's actually not as bitter as normal tea when it's unsweetened.

There's some myth circulating that the only foods that contain protein are meats, and that vegetarians are going to drop like flies after a year of not eating meat.

Which is obviously....not true at all.

Thanks for that little tidbit sarahgordon. =]

Direwolf, I highly doubt it was a protein deficiency that was making your hair fall out and your nails damaged.

It was obviously malnutrition attributed by your eating disorder.
All of the things you mentioned are symptomatic of eating disorders.

Protein deficiency only really occurs in 3rd world countries. Symptoms of protein deficiency include:
"apathy, diarrhea, inactivity, failure to grow, elevated cholesterol, gallstones, above normal uric acid levels, flaky skin, fatty liver, and edema of the belly and legs."

Nowhere in the book did they say that you can't be protein deficient. They did however say that you absolutely do not need meat for protein and the whole stereotype that "LOLZ UR VEGETERIAN? WHERE U GET UR PROTEINZ FRUM?" is complete and utter bs.

Vegeterians need not worry about getting adequate daily protein. If you eat your veggies, beans, and legumes you're more than fine.

And Thermal, most produce manufacturers don't use manure anymore. It's mostly just chemical fertilizers, and hormones (often times derived from animals ;) ) that increase growth when the plant is still maturing.

Since when do you need manure to grow a plant? I have a tomato plant in my backyard. I'm not dragging cow **** there every day to ensure I get ripe tomatoes. Sorry but it seems as if you've been brainwashed somewhat.

It's strange that nutritionists are never telling people; "YOU NEED TO EAT MORE MEAT AND CONSUME MORE CHEESE!"

For some strange bizarre reason it's always "Eat more fruits and vegetables."

Hate to break it to you love, but the whole Protein thing is a myth.

You're better off eating green (lettuce, celery, asparagus), red vegetables (tomatoes, radishes, beets) and especially legumes for protein.

But either way, you shouldn't ever worry about getting Protein. Most people should be worrying about getting too much protein.

Healthiest thing there is definitely the fruit bowl + granola bar. But that's not really a very big lunch. I'd definitely get the bean burrito.

If for whatever reason you're concerned about protein, 1 cup serving of beans has 15 grams of protein. Not to mention 15 grams of fiber. You'll probably feel more full by eating the bean burrito than you would if you ate the pizza or chicken sandwich.

I heard if you wait an hour and a half after you eat before you go to bed, you won't put on any weight.

The only reason people really gain weight from eating before bed is, while you're sleeping your metabolism slows down drastically as to conserve energy. So with that extra meal before bed, you won't burn the calories from that meal.

Well, it's not necessarily WHAT you eat, but how much calories you intake. You can lose weight with pizza as well as brocolli. The pendulum swings both ways, so to speak. (Obviously brocolli is better for you than pizza though.)

I inputted your stats into the Calorie-Count calculator and

" You burn 3400 calories during a typical day. Remember that this estimate is based on your body weight, height, age, gender, and your average level of activity."

Since you're trying to lose weight try to eat between 2700-2900 calories daily.

Are you a female? You shouldn't really worry much about it then.

Women have more fat than men do (naturally) so you will have to lose a lot of fat before your muscle mass is affected.

For males it's the opposite. Males tend to have less fat and more muscle. This means when a male loses weight, he has to make sure he doesn't go overboard because it can affect his muscle. Less muscle = obvious "bad" effects. Less energy and being slightly weaker.

Have you ever seen pictures of a male bodybuilder? Often times his thighs are HUUUUUUUUUUGE because of the muscles there.
Weight Loss Are "burning fat" and "losing weight" essentially the same thing??? Jul 27 2008
13:13 (UTC)
Don't quote me on this but from what I remember, you lose "weight" in this order.

1.) Calories->Carbohydrates and proteins.
2.) Fats.

Have you ever heard of the Atkins diet? It spawned the whole generation of low-carb fad diets. It's a fad died that does actually have some validity to it.

The Atkins diet is pretty much this: Eat very little carbohydrates and lose weight. When your body burns up all your carbohydrates it goes into a state of metabolism called Ketosis. You may have heard that carbohydrates=energy. Also joggers/runners/bikers/etc often Carbo-load the day before a big event so they have a bunch of energy the following day. In Ketosis, you have so little carbohydrates that when your body burns all of them, it goes to the next best thing in your "storage."

This would be fat.
This is why people on the Atkins diet are able to lose large amounts of weight but after they get off the diet, they will regain it.

It's like one of those foods you can't go wrong with. I know the brand Progresso has a really good one. Sometimes I don't have a lot of time to cook my own food so the canned one will have to do.

It's relatively low in calories, nice amount of plant-based protein, and has a nice amount of fiber which will definitely help keep you full for longer.

On top of fiber and water, definitely do crunches.

My body is sort of the same as yours. I lose weight on my arms and legs first, and my stomach last. Even when I lost several pounds my stomach didn't go down as much as I'd like. Then when I started doing crunches, it flattened a lot and now I love it :D

You shouldn't worry at all about getting enough protein.

Unfortunately the whole protein thing is a "myth." Have you ever heard of someone having a protein deficiency ever in your life? Only in third world countries.

We never hear of giraffes, rabbits and elephants looking to get their protein fix for the day.

You shouldn't say "stored to fat right away" because that's not true. That's like saying if I didn't eat today, and ate a lot tomorrow, I'd magically gain 5 pounds overnight.

A day, and even a week of a high deficit isn't going to magically turn your metabolism off. It takes a while to slow your metabolism down.
