Weight Loss Why am I not getting the weight off? Aug 07 2008

STRENGTH TRAINING!!! Starting out lighty of course! This will help you build muscles, increase your metabolism, and lose weight all at the same time! Even just going through the movements of strength training exercises w/o weights will help you tone your muscles (eg. doing bicep curls without any weights).  Resistance bands might be a good thing for you to invest in.  They're pretty cheap and really versatile when it comes to the different kinds of exercises you can do.  As for cardio, you don't want to push yourself to the point of unbearable pain so trying something with a bit lower impact might work for you now and then you can build up to walking on the treadmill or maybe even jogging :D

I agree with the other people that at your weight you should probably eat a little more.  In the past, I have royally effed my metabolism because I didn't eat enough. Also, where are your calories coming from? Like what kind of foods?  The quality of your calories can greatly impact the results of weight loss.  Other stuff like high sodium intake can hinder it too.

Hope this helps, and best of luck!!

-Almost completely cutting out diet sodas and drink mixes with aspartame (crystal light! ahh!)

-Definitely more exercise

-Logging EVERY bite...it's amazing how quickly those tastes and bites can add up!

-Drinking lots and lots of water (about 4 liters a day)

-Eating breakfast every day...not just coffee

-Cut out high calorie coffee drinks..very rarely I will endulge and have a frap from Starbuck's, but I still leave the whipped cream off!

-Focusing on making sure my calories are good quality cals.  I try to keep my protein percentage higher than my fat, and I try to get the recommended 25-30 grams of fiber per day. :D

And I almost forgot...

-measuring my food before I eat to prevent underestimating portion size!

Weight Loss Do you tend to gain more weight in the summer or the winter months? Jul 31 2008

I definitely gain more weight in the winter because I eat more and don't work it off...I'm like a bear preparing for hibernation. lol.  And then the spring comes and I usually shed my winter coating of extra fat :)

I agree with everyone that strength training is crucial!!! And to be honest with you, I would rather look a little beastly than to be flabby.  I try to hit the weight room 3-4 times a week in addition to cardio activities, but if you refuse to go to the weight room, my suggestion is to buy a resistance band.  You can do all kinds of toning exercises with one of these, and the good news is there is no bulky equipment to deal with, you can easily take it with you when you travel, and there are no grunting men to listen to like there are in the weight room!  I do enjoy lifting weights..maybe it's the grunting men (kidding!), but everyone has their own preferences.  Good luck finding something that works for you!

oooo I did! Pizza, hot wings, cake, ice cream, Chili's, and alcohol all helped ruin my good eating! I did work out Saturday and played tennis yesterday though, but I gained four pounds since Friday morning...hopefully I am retaining water :O

Happy weigh-in day and happy 4th of July!!!

So last night I ended up eating a lot of not good food including fried calamari and ice cream! ahh! It was no sugar added ice cream though but I still ate a lot of it.  I didn't get to work out yesterday so I figured my weight would be up this morning, but to my surprise it was down 1.4 pounds since last week :)

cw: 183

gw: 160s

Have a great holiday ladies and good luck on sticking to your goals!

monkeyfish, carol, meg, dplatzer, skookum, and emberjem: CONGRATS ON YOUR LOSSES!!!!!!!

2lilguys:
holding steady at 164 is not bad at all! At least you're not gaining! Hang in there!!! I hope your bleeding is nothing bad! The only thing I noticed is that my period is even more irregular than it was.  I have never been completely regular, but since I started working out consistently, my period is all over the place.. not sure if this is "normal" but it hasn't affected me in any other aspect of my health...it's always best to go see the doc though if it keeps up! Good luck!

So I just weighed..I was running late for work this morning so I forogt..oops..and my weight is...
184.4! so that is down 1.4 pounds since Monday morning!!!!
I was excited!! (still am..hence all the exclamation marks)
I am about to go eat mexican food with some of my amigos though...but I plan on getting the chicken fajitas and just eating the grilled chicken and veggies.  I've only had 600 cals today so far so as long as I don't go crazy tonight things should end nicely for the week :)

other exciting news..I am wearing this skirt that I haven't worn in two years and it looks good on me!! yay! I tried it on a couple weeks ago and was not pleased, but today I am supa happy with the way it looks!
sorry to ramble on and on..I am just happy!!!

Have a great weekend girls and stay focused!!!!

urbandecaay: congrats on your willpower!!!  That is great that you kept yourself from eating the evil cheesecake! Specialty coffee drinks were one thing I had a VERY difficult time giving up.  I've always liked regular coffee too, but it was hard to order a regular coffee from starbuck's when they have such tastey other drinks..hah anyways, congrats!

This week has not been the best.  Family issues prevented me from going to the gym..I went only two days..grrr.  And I was going to go today, and then I get there and realize I forgot my shoes..silly me!  So I am going to go do a workout tape..and probably work with the resistance bands.  Those things are pretty fun...I do prefer having actual weights to do strength training though.  I haven't weighed today..I forgot this morning..I might wait until tomorrow morning to do it..or just weigh after I work out..

anyone have any fun plans for the weekend? Mine will probably be pretty calm.  I am going to go to the gym in the morning (and bringing my shoes..haha) and then going to my cousin's and laying at the pool and reading a book..hah..it's been a stressful week..I definitely can't wait to relax!

Have a great Friday! (and weekend)!

Weight Loss Chewing gum: good or bad Jun 23 2008

OMG! I love chewing gum! I think I would go crazy without it.  I only chew sugarfree and I usually chew a pack a day.  I chew it at work to prevent snacking on evil foods, and I always chew a piece after I eat if I can't brush my teeth because it helps prevent build up of plaque and helps keep your teeth shiny white! I don't think it makes me feel hungry though.  To me, hunger is kind of a mind game because sometimes even when I am not hungry at all, I will see someone eating something tastey and think I am hungry..but then I remind myself I am not..so I chew some gum instead! :)

judeprevost,

I borrowed the Hungry Girl cookbook from my cousin, and I must say that it is amazing!! It's probably similar to the website..just in written form..the tips/substitutions are my favorite part...and most of the substitution dishes taste just as good as their evil calorie-filled counterparts!

sooji: I go to the gym at my college since I am in school right now..it is a small gym but it gets the work done.  I weight about 180..little less now..I weighed 210 at the beginning of June. I am 5'11.  I usually do the elliptical for 45 minutes on random hard difficulty mode (lvl 6-15)...it alternates randomly..and then I do weights for 45 mins or an hour pretty vigorously. I also do abs a few times a week.  And then I like to finish with either walking on the tredmill for an hour at 4.5 miles per hour or riding the bike for an hour going about 20 miles per hour.  :D

I usually burn around 1100 calories at the gym.  Sometimes less or sometimes more..just depends how much time I have to work. One day I burned 1800 calories..but that was not all at the gym cuz I went and played basketball for a while too.  But I love going to the gym!  It makes me so happy even though our gym at school is crappy and embarrassingly small. :P
