I too upped my calories a about 2 weeks before I began the workouts. I upped them to maintenance level and have lost one pound. I'll review in 4 weeks my results and then decide if I will eat more on workout days. Right now, I'm having a hard time to eat more protein.

I just tried protein2go from Designer Whey. Mixed with water is only 50 calories per packet and 10 grs of protein. I put 2 packets in my 32oz water container and take it with me to the gym.

I have a really hard time getting more protein and this works really well for me.

Thank you all for the advice. I did take a hot shower and it did get better, so off to the gym this afternoon for more punishment, nah... I shouldn't call it punishment because I really love lifting. It's the only kind of exercise I don't find boring and look forward to doing.

I was lifting until May of this year, then I got sick and stopped lifting on my cardiologist's advice. He allowed me to do only cardio until we figured out what was wrong. As soon as he gave me the green light 3 weeks ago, I ordered the book and I am so looking forward to this program.

Thanks again for being here, this group ( lifters) is great and I'm glad to be a part of it.

Thanks Paula. I think I'll probably do the long walk today. My legs don't hurt when I walk, it's getting up from a seated position or sitting down. My guess is the stepups did me in.

I began my first workout today.

My first problem was not being able to load a real bar with the weight I wanted. They(my gym in the building) either have weighted bars(9lbs) or a smith machine. So I substituted for dumbells.

My second problem came when trying to do the jacknife, the only ball was 65cm. high, too tall for me. So I substituted with the plank.

The stepups kicked my butt, when I was done my thighs felt like Jell-O.

I started upping my calories last week by 200 calories per day. I plan to stay whithin 1600-1800 and give it 4 weeks, then I'll review. I am aiming for 40-30-30.

My book arrived today, I'm already halfway through it. Planning to begin on monday.

I used the book's formula to determine calorie needs and on a sedentary day I get almost 1700 calories. I've been maintaining on a weekly average of 1500. I'm ready to give this a try, maybe combine with the diet advice from Tom Venuto's ebook, which is quite similar.

I have yet to read the exercise part of the book.

I'll check back in a few days.

I fell of the wagon this week. I did only 12 pushups this morning before jumping in the shower.

I'll have to start over week 2 next week.

Well, at least it's an improvement. When I began the first time, I tested at 6.

Don't let the light activity fool you, you will work up a sweat and will raise your heart rate.

Just as I suspected yesterday, a was only able to do 15 standard pushups with perfect form today for my test. I'll try again tonight but I think it would be better if I did week 2 again.:-(

Just completed week 2 day 3. With 12 as my max.

Looking at week 3, I don't see how I will complete 16-21 pushups, let alone 22. We'll see on tuesday if I'll have to repeat week 2.

YESSSSS, YESSS, YESSS! Completed day 2, week 2 with perfect form. I colapsed in the end and need to catch my breath but, I feel sooo awesome. I can't believe I did 11 standard push ups.

Week 2, Day 1 completed. My arms were burning and my breathing was hard in the last 7.

What amazed me was the fact that I could do the first 9 without difficulty, considering I began with 6.

Editing to add My first 9 were standard. I alternated the following between standard and girlie. I truly don't want to downgrade, so I'll keep trying.

Completed week 1 day 3. It keeps getting harder. And I did have to derank. Like OP said, the assessment doesn't seem fair with one set.

No, you need to get out of the pool to prevent osteoporosis. I too use the pool often for my workouts, right after I do either a 30 minute walk or a 30 minute weights session.

Fitness gain balance? how to help please!? Aug 16 2008
04:18 (UTC)

If you have access to a pool, in shallow water, walk the width of the pool with your eyes closed close to one edge and without touching the wall.

My physiotherapist gave that excercise to an elderly woman recovering from a hip fracture. The advantage of doing it in the water is, that if you lose your balance and fall, you won't hurt yourself.

Health & Support Irregular Heartbeat or Murmur? Aug 10 2008
15:27 (UTC)

I too developed an irregular heartbeat. I went through a battery of tests, including a 24 hour holter to monitor the heart beat and a radioactive isotope stress test. The holter confirmed the arrhythmia and the stress test has shown that my heart is in athletic condition.

I too had been doing HIIT about 5 times a week and stopped when out of the blue my heart would jump from 135bpm to 190bpm during intervals. My cardiologist said not to worry and gave me medication for a month and I should go back at the end of August for a follow up. He also said to lay off caffeine and I've completely eliminated it. He said to continue exercising at my age appropiate heart rate, no intervals though.

I still get the occasional flutter, but it doesn't scare me as it used to. I hope I can get back to HIIT, although sure as hell I won't be doing it 5 or 6 times a week as before.

Thank you danielnotdan, I'll quote you next time I blow a bridge hand, LOL.

Take care.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences. I'm still debating which feeling I need more, being at peace or letting go of pent up anger... I'll probably try one class each and then decide.

I remember about ten years ago, T'ai Chi could be self defense, some advanced students in my class were able to subdue an opponent in the blink of an eye. I only took the class for 6 weeks and had to drop it because my dad's health required full time commitment from me.

I also remember I was the only klutz in the class who managed to pull a muscle in my lower back, don't ask.

Thanks Melkor. I did Yoga and Taichi eons ago when I was looking after my father who was terminally ill. It did wonders for my psyche, I was calm and centered amid the chaos of my life at the time.

I thought kungfu is a form of taichi too.

I'm lifting weights and speed walking on alternate days to maintain my hard earned fat loss. So I would probably want something for my brain, too much going on at the same time.

I'll take a trial class next week and see.

Good thing I read Mortalmonkey's story about the arrhythmia.

I just went through a very scary series of arrhythmia in the last 6 weeks that took me to the cardiologist. I was put through a series of tests, including an arrhythmia holter for 24 hours and a thallium stress test this week.

My heart is in athlete condition and nobody had a clue as to what was causing the arrhythmia. We all thought it was stress related. Now I know, thank you Mortalmonkey. You just saved me from seeing an electrophysiologist and a lot of more money thrown on more tests.
