I have tried 2 different brands and i liked both. One was GNC's new line of beWell products -- their fish oil caps are coated and taste kind of vanilla-y and i never had any funky burps or aftertaste. They were kind of expensive, but i like them. If you have a trader joe's near you, i suggest getting theirs, which is the kind i use now. they have 2 kinds, one says "odorless" -- get those. A bottle of 90 cost me less than $10. |

i'm proud, too. and envious. i too am on the long road to recovery. i remember being hyper and silly and laughing and enjoying being social and being around people. i constantly wonder if i will ever enjoy social situations again, or if i will be anti-social now for the rest of my life. i used to love going out, going to parties, chatting, joking, laughing. now when i do go out all i feel is anxious, self-concious, afraid of doing/saying something stupid. i know you guys know what i mean. congrats girl. you're now my role model |

try quaker no added sugar instant oatmeal packets, organic instant oatmeal packets with nothing added at all, or kashi instant oatmeal - thats all to keep in your dorm room. you can try carnation instant breakfast, also to be kept in the dorm room. cottage cheese with fruit, oatmeal, or eggs can be found in your dining hall. DONT eat cereal of any kind- it is EXTREMELY easy to overeat cereal. search these forums. it's most people's #1 binge problem food. it was mine, and the only way i realized i was going to stop binging on it was to never start eating it in the first place. dont eat bacon, scrapple, sausage, canadian bacon, and probably not ham. oh you said you're a veg...no problem then! :) if you can, avoid butter and cheese. whole eggs are fine, and cooked any way! just be careful because scrambled eggs are often made with whole milk and alot of eggs. if you're going to have toast keep it to one piece and dont have jam or butter. i can tell you whats good and bad, but in the end, if you have a proportion issue, no one can help but your own will :( good luck |

| Weight Loss | For those of you eating a low fat diet, how is it working for you? | Jan 24 2009 01:02 (UTC) |

if my reply is redundant i apologize, i didnt read anyones responses. when i first began my weight loss journey, everything was as low fat to fat free as possible. that began about 3 years ago. today, i weigh 40 lbs less and am much, much healthier and look much, much better. in the past 6 months my diet has changed entirely. i rarely, rarely, rarely eat packaged foods. when i do, its ALWAYS on the go or in an emergency. i no longer fear peanut butter, nuts, butter or low fat dairy. i absolutely avoid excess oils, excess peanut butter, and large servings of nuts. i avoid peanut butter when there are better choices, and i use light butter in moderation. but now, my body fat has never been so healthy, my waist is as small as its ever been, i am not starving at the end of every day, my energy levels are much more stabilized, and after each meal, i definately feel satisfied. and i absolutely credit all of this to over coming my fear of fats. besides, low fat/fat free diets are TERRIBLE for you! i skimmed some other replies you got and it looks like you've already got some people giving you proof of that. |

um can we put your sweat problem aside for a sec. i hope that i am just being a metric system idiot here (although i am in the medical field and i do have low self confidence, im pretty sure i have a decent grasp on the metric system...), but are you saying you lost 3 kg in one week, really? because thats equal to roughly 6.6 pounds. supposedly it is "healthy" to only lose around 2 lbs a week. but, if you're very overweight, its absolutely easy to lose 6 pounds (3kg) in a week if you suddenly restrict your diet and work out daily. but you said you are not "seriously overweight", so losing 3kg in one week seems like a bit of a red flag to me. i'm really rather perplexed about this! |

Johnnypenso- you have NO IDEA what it is like to be a woman, and to have someone think you are pregnant when you are not. YOU HAVE NO IDEA! Its is NOT something that can be just "let go" it is humiliating and hurtful. Maybe you should stick to giving advice that you can relate to, or that you personally know how it feels.im sorry to come off as rude but this situation has happened to me, and how DARE you blow thing off so easily! this is so obviously a woman-specific problem, and if you are going to be so insensitive then do not both responding to such a personal issue. Jegvlf3- let me just tell you, when i was 19, 3 people who didnt even know each other all asked me/made a suggestion that i was pregnant. although 2 were old friends/coworkers i hadnt seen in a while, it was more hurtful that humiliating when they said it. but the third time was once, i was getting my nails done and one of the men asked me "how many months pregnant are you?" and i just looked at him, shocked. he said "im sorry, im only asking because my wife is pregnant too and I'm just curious" I had to spit out "I'm not pregnant". everyone nearby had been listening. a few people laughed, a few turned away silently. i was absolutely humiliated. i began to cry, but i was getting acrylic nails put on and simply could not leave.
I'm sorry this happened to you. i know how it feels. people say stupid things. remember how this feels, and next time you assume something about someone just by looking at them, you will NOT make the mistake of risking offending a stranger. |

| Foods | How To Identify Healthy Foods? | Jan 22 2009 20:09 (UTC) |
1 |
I'm sorry your mother never taught you how to identify healthy from unhealthy when she's not around. I know that sounds arrogant but it is not at all meant to be. It's simply the truth. I feel like you are asking how to differentiate between hard and soft, something you should have learned from the time you were just barely speaking. "Grilled" is always better than "battered", "breaded", or "fried" "sauteed" means cooked in oil and butter. the word "sauce" no matter what kind, what resturant, and what the sauce is on, is ALWAYS bad. "sauce is always fat or cream based. yes, oils are heart healthy, but no matter what resturant you are at, the amount they use is not healthy. i didnt read any of the above replies but the first one, and go_lucky is right on target. when eating out, cheese and mayo are not your friends. at home they can be safe because you can control them, but eating out you NEVER REALIZE how much they're giving you. usually alot of people think when they eat out a salad is always healthy. not so much. always get the dressing on the side. "candied" nuts are never good, and even though nuts are healthy in moderation, usually when eating out and they are on a salad, it's not a healthy portion. dired cranberries and any other dried fruit is nothing but sugar. skip it. creamy anything is bad. honey dijon, ranch, caesar, creamy italian, etc. bad bad bad. Kraft now makes single-serving salad dressings that look like a bigger version of a ketchup packet. you can buy a package of like 8 at the grocery store, it is a LARGE portion of salad dressing for 25 calories. i carry packets in my purse whenever there is an emergency if i need to get a salad at a grocery store or bad resturant, i have very low-cal dressing with me at all times. one packet is good enough for even a huge salad. "steamed" at chinese/thai/japanese resturants is always good. everything else is not. tempura, "sauce", "deep fried"...all of these words in a dish description are bad. fresh fruit and fresh veggies are always good. low fat/fat free yogurt is good. bagels are bad but if necessary, use lowfat/fat free cream cheese. otherwise cream cheese and butter are OUT. most eggs are good but if possible, egg whites are better. sausage, bacon, canadian bacon, scrapple, spam, corned beef hash, home fries, hash browns, and potato patties/pancakes are bad. if you go to a bagel place or something, opt for the bagel with low fat/fat free cream cheese. if you're dying for a breakfast sandwich, get it without meat. good luck |

Hey Syeph!! I am 22 and I live in the burbs of Philly too, and if we live close I'd love to be your buddy!!! I'm going to send you a private message too, just in case you don't check back on this post, and so we can find out if we're close by. Anyway, my story is that when i was 19 I was on my way to becoming obese. I was overweight and leading a disgusting lifestyle of Philly food all day every day and lots of binge drinking every weekend. I decided to end it and started working out and changing my eating habits, which worked out great and I eventually turned my lifestyle around entirely. I had a short battle with anorexia but it was nipped in the bud by myself and a few people close to me who cared. Sometimes it is still a mentle battle when I see models on TV, but my boyfriend is constantly giving me reality checks and I know I'd rather be healthy. Now, I'm fitness/healthy eating/healthy lifestyle OBSESSED and i LOVE LOVE LOVE helping people who ask for it!!! its alot of fun for me. I'm in school right now for something entirely unrelated, but once i finish up my current program I think i am going to go back to become a nutritionist. can't wait to talk to you |

i didnt really read any of the posts after the first few went completely off topic. but i have the v-shape thing, so here's my routine, in short, summarized. i weight train 5 days a week. i do heavy lifting for my legs and lower body and moderate weight for my upper body. when im done i do 30-45 minutes of interval cardio. i do like, 5 minutes of ab exercises 3 times a week. i dont overdo it like alot of people seem to do, and i still have the v-shape. my diet also 95% kicks a**. but, besides all of that, which i do credit my lean waist to, hanging chair leg lifts are absolutely the #1 reason i have the v-shape. BUT the reason i told you everything else first is because i dont want you to think thats the only thing you have to do to get it, because if i didnt do any of the other stuff, i wouldnt have it. hope i helped |

i lost 40 lb's on a calorie-restricted, low-fat, low-sugar ("sugar free") "diet". what that really meant was i was eating tons of portion controlled junk food like 100 calorie packs of doritos, oreos, and cookies. i was using tons of sugar substitute and eating loads of fat free cottage cheese and yogurt, nasty salad dressings, and other things that are naturally not fat free. i did 30-45 minutes of cardio 5-6 days a week. i lost weight, but i was flabby and soft. sure i fit into size 2 jeans. but i still had a squishy, droopy belly, love handles, and bat wings. i absolutely without question had no sign of "abs". i gained 10 pounds back. then i lost all 10 and am at my ideal weight today. i did that by eating low fat cottage cheese, all natural yogurt, no processed "snacks" loaded with sugar, no sugar substitutes. i eat lots of grilled chicken and lots of steamed or raw veggies. i drink nothing but water or tea. just about the only sugar i consume is fruit. i rarely eat breads and pastas, but i do eat whole grains such as oatmeal and brown rice daily. i dont completely stay away from processed food, i do use protein powder daily, and i eat kashi granola bars, gen-soy soy crisps, and light string cheese. i weight train 30mins, 5 days a week, but i never do any ab isolation exercises. i do cardio for 30 mins 5 days a week. my abs rock, i know because my boyfriend tells me so on a daily basis. also because im not sot and squishy, and when i look in the mirror i can see the outline of my abs, and the line down the middle. my vote is for clean eating. |

i think it's a bad idea to drop your calories. first of all, you said at one point your intake is 1450 calories, then you said it's 1200. so which is it? second of all, you said 47%of your calories are carbs, which definately qualifies as "low-carb", but your fat intake is HIGH! low carb is alright to lose weight quickly and in a short time period, but it is, for most people, not a good way to live. your body will eventually burn out and weight loss WILL stall. so, how long has your carb intake been this low? it may sound strange, but you might want to consider upping your carb intake ever so slightly. although the high protein/high fat/low carb diet works for just about everyone short term, in the long run your body cannot live this way. i'd like to know exactly what kind of carbs you are eating, too. if you are eating only breads and starches (or mostly), this could be a part of it. try increasing your carb intake to about 50%, and aim for it to be ALL from vegetables, whole grains, and a little fruit. if you just love your breads and potatoes, thats ok, just try to minimize them for now. low fat has been proven to not only be unsuccessful, but unhealthy as well, but, your fat intake is rather high. are you eating alot of red meat and nuts? if so, you don't need to cut those out of your diet, just cut back! try to eat more low-fat protein, such as chicken, turkey, egg whites, cottage cheese, yogurt, and low fat or fat free milk.
i dont know your exact diet, or your exact daily activity level. but it sounds to me that if you are only taking in 1100-1200 calories daily, your weight loss is stalling because your body is not being properly fueled. |

opeca, it is a "known fact" that as GIRLS age (as opposed to women) their pelvis grows along with the rest of their body. when girls reach maturity the only thing that keeps growing are their ears and nose, and their waistline if they let it. women's pelvis's only expand if they are pregnant in their life. for example, im never going to be pregnant, and i'm 22 years old. my pelvis is not going to "grow" anymore. just my hips will expand (just like the rest of my body) if i were to gain weight. i'm not trying to be rude, just wanted you to make sure you knew about that "known fact". |

i feel like you asked for suggestions to a few different problems, so here's my best. people are supposed to eat more than once a day, so i dont know what's wrong with being hungry by lunch time when you ate breakfast. i personally eat 6 times a day. thats on a structured day. im also an emergency nurse and work long shifts, so on those days i graze all day long. whats important is at the end of the day if i ate enough calories. if you only want to eat breakfast, then eat all 2000 calories in one meal. but my advice is to eat at least 3 meals a day, if not more. it's ok to eat breakfast then be hungry again at lunchtime. that's why it's called "lunchtime". i dont know how in dept your want your exercises to be, how intense, or how simple or difficult. the most simple move that targets the entire lower body (lower back, quadriceps, gluteals, and calves) is the squat. it is the greatest exercise EVER. i love it, and its awesome, and that's that. after that, it gets a little more in-depth. you can do leg presses, calf raises, deadlifts, back extensions, hamstring curls, leg curls, lunges, and tons of variations on the squat. |

she didnt gain muscle, just lost fat, causing her muscles to look larger and/or more defined. if she didnt seem to lose muscle mass, she may have been eating barely enough calories to support her current body weight, and most of it was probably protein. this is incredibly unhealthy. her body eventually will begin to breakdown. it is ok to do for very very short periods, as this is usually how figure models run a few weeks before contest. i dont suport this and it is unhealthy no matter what.
if you need advice about how to balance out your nutrition with your activity let me know, because this idea you have will only lead to binging, exhaustion, and malnourishment. |

don't eat the bread they give you at the beginning. DONT go to dinner starving, because you will end up over eating. if you ARE starving, have ONE piece of that pre-meal bread, no butter or oil. order a broth-based (as opposed to creamy) soup for an appetizer. if you want salad, ask for oil and vinegar dressing, fat-free balsamic, or lemon juice. if thy have none of those, get the healthiest sounding one you can (ranch is NOT good!) and get it ON THE SIDE. don't order pasta dishes. the portions they give you are AT LEAST 5 times a normal serving, and even one normal serving is high in calories. even if you dont eat the whole thing, don't lie to yourself, you WILL end up eating at least half. don't order anything fried or breaded. dont get anything that has a creamy sauce. "Grilled" "baked" "boiled" "seared" and "steamed" are good words. "fried" "sauteed" and "breaded" are bad. swap any potato side for steamed or roasted veggies. if you must go with a potato, get it baked, and skip the cheese, bacon, butter, and sour cream (bet you dont want that baked potato anymore, do you?). if you can choose your meat size, stick with 6 oz or less (4 is ideal). get all sauces on the side if you are unsure of their ingredients. don't get dessert. have something deliciously healthy like weight waters ice cream, sugar free fudgesicles, or fresh fruit waiting for you at home. if you want a fortune cookie, go ahead and have one, because they arent so bad. don't get rice. if you really want the rice, ask for HALF as much. asian resturants, like italians with the pasta, give way more than enough. stay away from anything smothered in cheese. that goes for alfredo, quesadillas, and fancy chicken dishes. at breakfast places, stick with eggs, fruit, whole grain toast WITHOUT butter. steer clear of the waffles, pancakes, whipped cream, sausage, ham, and bacon. dont get soda with your meal. hope i helped! |

I strength train 4 times a week. more than 1 online body fat calculator has told me i have high body fat. i dont. im normal. |

| Fitness | Last pounds of goal weight loss are always the hardest to get rid off...HELP! | Jul 09 2008 03:11 (UTC) |
|
before i finished reading your post, i was going to suggest dietary changes. but now that you've mentioned that you "pay attention to what you eat (at least most of the time)", i KNOW that those last 12lbs are due to your diet. if you have no idea how many calories you are eating daily on average, or how many you need, figure it out. then decide what you need to cut back on (or increase!). cutting carbs is a quick solution but as soon as you start eating them again, the weight you lost from cutting them will come right back. if you drink soda or alcoholic beverages on a daily basis(even if its one a day), try cutting them out(or back, to once or twice a week). if you can't stand to cut those out, look at the rest of your diet. if you have a bagel and cream cheese for breakfast every morning, try a whole grain granola bar and yogurt instead, or oatmeal and eggs, or whole grain cereal and skim milk. if you have cream in your coffee every day, try switching to 2% milk (or skim, if you don't mind!). do you have a sandwich for lunch every day? try switching to a salad, and remember to lay off the creamy dressing! or if you love your sandwiches, take away one slice of bread. it's truly the little things that make a huge difference. if you use alot of butter throughout your day, try cutting back. hope i helped. i had alot more suggestions but i dont want to leave a super long reply. good luck! |

thats an awesome plan. although i agree with mrsdagle that you could use another rest day, it's actually totally up to you and how you're feeling that day. if you dont feel tired, i say do it. 3 days a week of strength training and 3 of cardio is basically the ideal fatloss schedule. neither is too much or too little. |
