BTW, I've heard REALLY good things about a new v. expensive treatment called Acoustic Wave Therapy (AWT) on cellulite. Seriously miraculous. You can Google it and watch the videos you find on YouTube.

Update: I've been doing the OCM for a month or two now on my t-zone 2-3 times a week and it's cleared up my blackheads and white heads! Thanks, jewelsmcblah! :)

AND my adult cystic acne? GONE! I can't credit the OCM for that (unfortunately)... nothing has ever touched it and since age 21 or so it typically had settled in to a pattern of week long exxon valdez disaster around my chin, once a month, around my cycle. If I'm stressed it got worse.

I went on Loestrin Fe 1/20 4-5 months ago for hormone therapy and by happy accident, I noticed my cystic acne had stopped after the first month or so. I've had other (bad) side effects from the Loestrin, mainly in the first 3 months, including a never ending cycle lasting 3 weeks (!!!!! so much fun) but I have to say, on balance, TOTALLY worth it. YEAH!!!! Yell

Anyway.

I hate it when no one responds. I just saw this and thought I'd answer after the great few days I've had.

People can and do stop bingeing - it is totally possible and completely achievable for anyone.

I just got back from a workshop where the lady running it was just as bad as anyone / the worst of us on here.

She stopped bingeing when she allowed herself permission to eat whatever she wanted whenever she wanted. She is a social worker / counselor and just reasoned her own plan out.

Her guides were that she had to sit down when eating, she had to eat slowly and enjoy the food, and she had to listen to her body and stop when comfortably full, because it would all be there for the next meal. And just keep doing that and you'll gradually stop bingeing.

She decided to trust the process, even though she knew she'd gain a bit of weight. She said you have to be secure and trust the process and love yourself enough to go through this step, and trust that it will work. She used to be heavy but now she's quite thin.

Apparently it has worked for a lot of people some of who were there as part of their recovery process. They had all recovered from bad bingeing and EDs ad looked so happy.

Anyway, it was really inspiring and I just thought I'd pass the good juju along. :)

If I can be secure enough in myself, I'm going to do this, and stop counting so hard. Maybe even going midway and making low fat versions of what I want and letting myself have as much of it as I want.

Weight Loss "Cheat Days" May 23 2008

I do, but I go way over my maintenance levels when I have a cheat day and want to keep track of how bad the damage is.

It depends on how you define a cheat day - people do it differently. Some people have any foods they want but stay w/n their maintenance calories. They tend to keep count during their cheat day.

Some people eat as much as they want of whatever they want and don't have a limit on how many cals they can have for that day or that meal, etc.

Then there's people like me who eat what they want but want the bill at the end of the night to see how in debt they'll be.

Since you aren't overweight it sounds like you are more or less burning = what you eat, give or take a few hundred.

But I understand your being ravenous all the time- same here - and wanting to drop a few, but your appetite makes it really hard to cut back on cals the way you want, at least without going crazy and bingeing.

You might not be eating enough protein - I find that's my problem.  Especially if you are exercising - you are building and maintaining muscle and your body needs even more protein for that.  For a snack, try cooking eggs up the way you want and having them on lowfat whole grain toast, for a snack.  Also lowfat soy protein shakes. I also keep other lowfat protein sources ready, as well as cut fruits and veggies on hand to help feel full. I'll have sliced chicken or peanut/almond butter on an apple.

It sounds like some part of your challenge is that you are busy while at work or whatever so have less time to eat and arrive at home really hungry. Try snacking more often during the day - I need to do that and it helps my murdering the fridge when I get home.

I would prepare 1-pot meals on Sundays and have enough for the week so I could quickly eat healthy dinners as soon as I got home. Also really bulky, low calorie satisfying foods. Like for dinner I'll have 9 oz. chicken, a whole eggplant, a large zucchini, bell pepper, mushrooms, some brown rice, and a lot of ginger and garlic in oyster sauce or black bean sauce for 500 cal.  I stay kinda full with that.

That, plus enough water and coffee ( lots of it) and as much lettuce and celery as I want (blah) will help manage my cravings and appetite.

I feel you. I was so close to taking my fiance's car after he fell asleep and going on a food run last night but somehow I stopped, after going online and looking up some of the links, below.

First, you might want to attend OA meetings in your area. If you can't in person, they have online ones every three hours:

http://www.therecoverygroup.org/

http://www.oa.org/index.htm

Start investigating into therapists who specialize in binge eating disorders in your area. Maybe your therapist you are seeing now doesn't specialize in it and doesn't know how to treat it. You might be able to get some good names of therapists through OA.  Also investigate with any therapist whether medication like SSRIs that are good for EDs, combined with something like behavioral therapy, might work for your binge eating.

In the meantime, check out some of the articles on associated content. Reading these and then going to a meeting was what stopped me last night.

For some reason, CC adds an extra space between some of the letters in the links so that they don't work, like where it says "pa ge=4" in the one right below, it is supposed to say "page=4" and the one below, "...eliminating.html" If you correct it, it'll work.

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2329 07/living_with_a_bingeeating_disorder.html?pa ge=4

Also, you might start structuring your meals by developing a meal plan where you eat good food every few hours, so that there's something to look forward to and you don't feel deprived. I know you've been eating more often but try eating MORE food more often. Like, 300-500 for main meals, and a few 100-200 cal snacks, one right before bed. Then plan a really great breakfast to look forward to first thing the next morning. That helps me.

At times when I have more control over my binge eating, i try to cut back on stuff that makes my food addiction worse, like white flour, wheat, caffeine, fats and refined carbohydrates like sugar. I think my bingeing is made way worse by my addictions to that stuff so I try to help myself by detoxing as much as I can from them.

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2980 36/compulsive_overeating_totally_eliminating. html

Good luck, and feel better soon.

After I read your post, Jules, I had to try it. My skin is combination and prone to blackheads and cystic acne.

Just tried 50% CO/40% EVOO/10% Tea Tree. So far, so good - glowing skin: check. Blackheads reduced: check. I think I'm going to try a light scrub on it as well before the next go round, to get rid of any excess skin and clear the way for the oil to do its thing. Cheap and fabulous! I'm excited about it all.

I'm multiracial, German, Chinese, and indigenous Ojibwe. Which means my political incorrectness gets to roam free.

So I suppose I have hybrid vigor and get pissed off about having to check the "other" box all the time. I'm also terrifyingly efficient, have meglo tendencies, know kung fu, and can play a musical instrument (but I'm bad at math??!). Oh, and I get drunk quickly, and I want my dad's land back.

My kids will have it even better - they'll be OjibwaGerMexiCanese. AND he has Sephardic Jewish heritage. Yesssssss. Good with money, climbing fences, and traveling long distances across deserts.

Gotta go drink lager, bind my feet, and eat some frybread now (I especially hate that last one). 1 plate of frybread made with lard = 700 calories.

I'll eat basically the same thing but a few minor changes make all the difference. I also drink a soy berry shake that keeps me really full. Having both should keep you going for a long time.

Hot cereal: Instead of soy milk/egg whites put some GOOD quality non sweetened soy protein isolate powder in, like .5 oz. (I like the soy isp from puritan's pride, 25 grams of protein per 1 oz).  You get more protein for the calories/serving weight. It really helps keep me full, better than just soy milk or egg whites and oatmeal.

Also I find that the type of hot cereal I eat makes a difference. Trader Joe's sells a multigrain cereal that is a mix of oats, rye, wheat, and...barley(? dunno). The same amount keeps me full for longer. 1 cup dry cereal w/o soy protein powder: 260 cals.

Soy berry shake: 1 cup non fat soy milk, few servings stevia, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 oz. soy protein isolate, 1 cup mixed frozen dark berries. Blend in blender till smooth. 280 cals.

I don't think I could finish both the shake and the cereal for breakfast, and I can eat more than anyone I know at one sitting.  My fiance can only finish half the shake alone and is tremendously full.

That sounds to be a good strategy.  Easing into different portions and out of CC'ing so often feels "safer" than stopping CC'ing cold.  I'm trying to recuperate from a minor knee injury that is acting up, so my inability to exercise and keep my metab to a level I am familiar with is triggering some anxiety as well.  But this is meant to be a 3-4 month break and part of a lifestyle change. It is good to hear and be reminded that small workable steps are a key to this.

Thanks for your advice - it makes sense to me and truly is appreciated.

how cool, DwF!! :) My own paternal grandpa was 1/2 ojibwe and it is fun to look back and see family resemblances in my aunt and dad. We only have one pic of my great grandmother as his parents died and he was put in an orphanage v. young - it would be great to be able to see more pics of her. It is wonderful to have such a great and proud heritage.

Hm. Cha-LENGE.

When I die in 60 years I intend to be buried with a doggie bag of all the foods I crave/binge on, including burgers.

The doggie bag will be velvet and the phrase, "Takin' it Wit Me" will be embroidered, in bling.

Maybe I'll have the foods embalmed too. Hey, if it was good enough for the Egyptians back when, you know.  I'm just morbid and loopy enough to do it.  Way to cure my ED. No more deprivation - I will always have my fav foods... forever!

Which brings me to my next drama thread title: "Do I have to log a huge onion blossom if my digestive system is no longer working?"

Pregnancy & Parenting How did you keep your child in their own bed? Apr 28 2008

Original Post by cecilyb03:

Unfortunately, he can open doors. My husband suggested putting the child proof knob on the inside and shutting the door. I think it's kind of mean, but he has no reason to leave the room. He's not potty trained yet. I do have an air mattress that I can put on his floor if he'd rather sleep on that.

I think the family bed idea suggested by patsu and dbackerfan is a good one. Or the Supernanny solution is good too.

But perhaps putting a childproof knob on the door or shutting them in if they can't reach the doorknob might be setting you and them up for problems later. Especially if they happen to be prone to night terrors, etc.

However, you might not want them to think they need a parent to lay down with them in order to fall asleep.  The supernanny solution seems best if your little one isn't prone to nightmares, etc.- just keep walking them back to their room without saying anything, apart from "these are the rules."

I think it might depend on the child...Some kids are more sensitive than others. Maybe you need to evaluate his situation based on his disposition and his age. My brother for one might probably have been able to deal with being shut in. If it'd been me, I'd have gone nuts.

In any case, I think the more we can offer the kids relationship dependability and fulfillment vs. deprivation, the better foundation we set for their future well being.

Its pretty good. I use it all the time now.

In re: your question, I've read (see below) that it has almost no effect on and may improve glucose tolerance.

Some of the extracts out there may have a bitter aftertaste in higher concentrations. Some of the products advertise that they have "no aftertaste," so you might want to look out for those.

I've recently read a book, Healing With Whole Foods, where the author warns to "Obtain only the green or brown [whole] stevia extracts or powders [wild oats, health food stores esp. have this]; avoid the clear extracts and white powders, which, highly refined and lacking essential phyto nutrients, cause imbalance."

ugh-- if someone would do the rubbing of my cellulite for me on my legs (front & back) I would be happy- bc i want to vomit every time i see it- let alone touch it--

if it works though- i would try it-- do you have any references on it? i just saw something on this on FitTV-- some lady trademarked it-- can't remember her name though...

I don't have them at hand :( ...  I've moved and they're back in storage. Basically, apart from what a doctor personally told me,  I'd read one of those books on aging /looking good by a famous dermatologist like Murad, and he recommended the "bread-dough" method based on the results he saw in his patients.  He referenced a crabby old masseuse with hands of steel who'd knead and prod her clients' cellulite into submission.

I did some more research and found a good survey published in a medical journal of what's known and been done thus far on cellulite.

http://www.syneron.com/assets/downloads/_pdf/ JCLT-Avram-Vela.pdf

He seems to suggest that there are two different types of cellulite - the kind that dimples on its own, and the kind that only comes out from hiding when you put pressure on it like when you're sitting. I believe he suggests that the kind that dimples on its own results from a weak dermis / skin layer so the massage may even worsen it. He seems to suggest that use of retinol on that type of  cellulite is promising in that it'll strengthen the dermis.

Anyway. On a weird note, apparently some people have it on their heads.

Go for quinoa (a whole grain). The info on wikipedia for it isn't bad. It is considered an unusually complete food source and is being considered by NASA as a possible crop for long-duration manned spaceflights. Yay.

Cook it and flavor it like oatmeal - I love it with cinnamon, honey, and vanilla.

Shop at farmer's markets - fresh local stuff for cheaper.

Try discount food stores. In CA, TX, AZ, "99c or Less" (pink, green blue logo) is amazing. Tonight, just got two trunkloads of good food and fresh produce for 80 bucks. Also Aldi food stores farther out east. Trader Joe's isn't bad as long as you don't fall for the impulse buy traps.

Cook at home, rotate dinner parties at friends' houses instead of going out.

Google the "Grocery Game" website. Takes some planning and saving coupon pages from papers but is worth it. You can cut your food spending in half over a month. Stockpile foodstuffs on sale.

I've taken to making as much of my own stuff as possible or using recyclable products. I'm trying to persuade myself about the hygiene products (if its good enough for hippies...j/k). I've seen moms who do 3-4 loads of laundry every other day resort to making their own detergent.

Make good use of crockpots, etc. Helps also with time management - if I can cook in bulk I spend less time each day on food prep.

Check out sites like beingfrugal.net, and hang in there!

Yeah, seriously, it has (the kneading like bread dough method). The doctor who tipped me about it said it'd work well for me because I exercise a lot so have strong muscle tone and drink lots of water. If you don't you won't see very good results.

It takes some time, and I REALLY have to do it every day, and knead it pretty hard for a good amount of time, but I've seen decent results. It took me about 3 weeks or so. Basically it is like Endermologie, a common treatment for cellulite. I've read about this kneading method in various books by reputable sources as well.
