Foods Quinoa? Aug 23 2009

I tried quinoa for the first time this summer, and I loved it. I made a sort of salad with quinoa, chopped apple, dried cherries, toasted pecans, and a little olive oil and lemon juice, salt and pepper. It was yummy!

Make sure you rinse/drain your quinoa several times before use or it will taste bitter.

Health & Support Another question about restoring metabolism Aug 23 2009

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll try eating 1900-2000 calories (like gi-jane said, it's not too much more than I'm already eating) and see where that takes me.

Young Calorie Counters Should I gain, maintain or lose? Aug 21 2009

Definitely do NOT lose! You are by no means overweight or above average. As long as you are eating enough calories, the weight you are at now is probably pretty healthy--a little on the low side, perhaps, but then again you're only 13. You're still growing and developing, so it's natural that you should gain a little more weight as you get older, so don't fight it! Just eat when you hungry, stop when you're full (at least 1800 I'd say, more if you're active at all), and enjoy everything in moderation, and it's very unlikely that you'll end up at anything other than a healthy weight.

Health & Support Scoliosis & Height Aug 19 2009

Hmm...this is a tough one! I have mild scoliosis, which causes me to be just a little shorter than I should be, but I don't need surgery to correct it, so I can't speak from personal experience.

On one hand, I'd say you're not actually growing two more inches...they were already there and your spine is just straightening itself out, so I wouldn't think you'd burn any more calories. On the other hand, if your spine is lengthening, then your torso is going to need to accomodate those extra inches, and thus you would be "growing" a little bit.

I really have no idea, but I'd say you could safely eat what is recommended for your weight, age, gender, and a height of 5'6. Or just continue to eat like you used to, and if you feel a little hungrier, go ahead and eat a little bit more. I don't think height is a huge factor in determining calorie needs, unless you're talking about a person who's 4'10 verses someone who's 6'0.

Anyway, good luck with your surgery!

Health & Support Laxative Tea Aug 04 2009

Thanks for the replies. I had a cup last night (I made it rather strong) and it seemed to do the trick this morning. No diarrhea, it didn't wake me up early, and I barely had any cramps, just a stronger urge to go. It tastes pretty decent too!

I'll definitely be careful NOT to overdo the tea, because yeah, it basically is like a laxative pill (isn't senna that stuff that they put in a lot of laxative pills?) and I don't want to be unable to have a bm without it. But it certainly is a nicer option than ex-lax when nothing else will unplug me. I have been to the doctor about constipation and it wasn't really helpful. Prunes and other things that work well for people with mild constipation don't do anything for me, as my constipation is not a result of a diet that lacks fiber.

Wormyeyelid, obviously I don't know you or really much about you, but from your previous posts it looks like at 5'6-5'7 your goal weight is 105 pounds and you think your 19.5 inch thighs are fat? That doesn't sound like someone who is happy with their body shape and lives life to the fullest and eats like a pig. It sounds like someone with an eating disorder.

Health & Support laxatives? Jul 24 2009

Could it be that the op just meant she was backed up (as in she hadn't been able to go to the bathroom in a couple days a.k.a constipation) and she wanted something to help move things along and therefore "clean out" her body of excess "junk" (poop?) Laxative abuse is very serious but I think some people were a little quick to assume abuse.

Alinaali--laxatives will do the trick if you are constipated, but they are a little extreme and better off left for emergencies (when nothing else works). They will cause painful cramps and possible dehydration. First try increasing your fiber and water intake, and get some exercise. Then you could try some natural remedies like coffee, prunes, a little olive oil, etc. Or a mild laxative tea. If you've been having this problem for a while, you might try miralax, which is non-habit forming and doesn't cause cramps and diarrhea.

And if you weren't referring to constipation, there's very little truth behind the idea of cleansing your system, and to try and do so with laxatives would be very painful and dangerous.

Health & Support Low estrogen?? Jul 17 2009

I have low estrogen levels but the only symptoms I have ever had is no period, ever. Of course that doesn't mean that dark hairs couldn't be a symtpom...do you have an irregular period, hot flashes, night sweats, fatigue, joint pain, dry skin, any other noticable symptoms? See your doctor if it concerns you--they can test your blood hormone levels and decide what to do about it.

My aunt and female cousin both went gray very young, it seems to run in that side of the family. My cousin is 21 and she already has almost completely gray roots, but so many people dye their hair regularly these days that she doesn't even consider it a hinderance--just an excuse to dye her hair a beautiful chestnut brown.

Health & Support Sticking out stomach? Jul 10 2009

It's hard to have a completely flat stomach when you're eating a normal food intake, because you're almost always going to have some bulk in your actual stomach, which will probably push it out just enough that if you really scrutinize it it's noticable. It sounds like you're doing everything you can so try not to obsess over it too much. It's unrealistic to strive for a completely flat stomach 100% of the time. Make sure when you do abdominal work you are also working your core muscles and your back muscles--look into pilates.

Chrissy how do you come up with so many great survey ideas!?!?

3. want to eat after having already eaten your meal?

--I chew gum/mints, drink flavored water, or have a little chocolate

4. have a sweet tooth?

--Ice cream, chocolate pudding, yogurt, chocolate chips, hershey kisses

5. have extra calories to use?

6. have no calories but are still hungry?

7. know that your next meal is going to be kinda late and want something to stay full for a bit?

--A big apple, yogurt, popcorn, a luna bar, plus water or tea

--ask myself if I'm really hungry, have a small bite if I really want some, then chew gum, drink water, or eat a healthy snack if I'm hungry

9. others around you are eating chips/potato salad/barbecue foods?

--I don't really care for BBQ foods much, so I'd bring my own veggie burger or something or eat salad and fruit.

10. you're at an italian restaurant? [no calorie info available for the following]

--Probably soup and salad

11. you're at a mexican restaurant?

--Salad, or nothing (I don't like mexican food, weird I know)

Health & Support Inpatient Jul 09 2009

My IP stay was in the spring of 2006, it was fairly brief because it really kicked my butt into gear, meaning it motivated me to recover like nothing else had and also gave me the means to make that recovery complete and lasting--3 years later and I'm still going strong. I started with a partial day program for about a month-this really was not very helpful to me because I was still allowed to engage in behaviors and restrict at home (we were only there from 8-3ish). My typical day went like this:

Wake up at 6AM to get weighed and get vitals checked (in a gown with scales facing away from us), go back to sleep.

Get up between 7:30 and 8, go into the main lounge room area, watch TV/relax until breakfast at 8. For me, breakfast was usually a small bowl of cereal, 2% milk, a bagel with pb, a hard boiled egg, juice or fruit or cereal, yogurt or cottage cheese, an english muffin with butter, juice/fruit and milk. We had an hour for breakfast and had to finish everything or we'd be given ensure.

After breakfast we had group from 9ish until 10:30, so we basically just went around the room and checked in with one another and talked about how we were feeling or what we were struggling with, and the counselors helped us--this was so much better once I actually started participating!

Morning snack was at 10:30. I had about 350 calories, maybe graham crackers with pb and milk for example, although ensure was an option if you ddin't feel like eating. And water.

11-1145ish was usually either a spirituality session, art therapy, movement therpay, or nutrition class. So anything from coloring and listening to music to yoga and collage making.

Lunch was at 12. We had a system where every 2-3 days we got a menu with multiple options and we sat down with our nutritionist to choose items that fit our meal plan and were varied and somewhat challenging. Lunch might be a veggie burger with chips, steamed veggies, fruit, and milk (cheese and mayo for fats) with maybe cookies or something. Again, we had an hour to eat and relax.

We had another therapy session after lunch-this was mostly run by the counselors, who might talk to us about body image or perfectionism or something related to EDs.

Snack was from 230-3, something like an apple, yogurt, and cookies for example, and we had some free time to write in journals, do puzzles, read, etc. We also got to make a 10 minute phone call here.

School was from about 330-5 for those under 18--our teachers sent in work and we did homework or read or took tests in a little room with a teacher, those who weren't in school had more free time or did more expressive therapy or something. On weekends we had free time instead of school, or visiting.

Dinner was from 5-6, and it was usually a main dish of meat with potatoes, bread, veggies, etc or stir fry, pasta with salad and bread, a sandwich with chips and veggies, a burger, etc. We had a lot of choices and they were quite varied, although there was a lot of food.

AFter dinner we had another group check in like the one in the morning until about 730, after which we could make phone calls. one or two nights during the week we had visiting as well as on the weekends.

Evening snack was about 8-830, and might be a banana, pudding, and a granola bar. Then we got our vitals checked again and could go into our rooms and shower and read or whatever until bed around 10 pm.

Bathroom trips were monitored, meds were distributed throughout the day and they checked to make sure you took them, items like razors that could be used to hurt oneself were locked up by the staff and use was monitored, gum chewing wasn't allowed, coffee and smoke breaks were allowed only if you were over 18 and strictly monitored and considered rewards, no exericse (even stretching) was allowed...that's all i can really think of! Good luck!

The Lounge What do you do when your cat brings home a baby bird? Jul 09 2009
02:58 (UTC)

There are a lot of birds at the barn where I ride and the babies fall out of their nests all the time. I know people who've had success raising abandoned baby birds by making them "nests" out of hay in a little basket and feeding them dry cat food soaked in water (drop it into their open mouths, but make sure the pieces aren't too big). As far as cats catching them, I have the same problem with my three cats. A bell on their collar helps a lot in terms of warning birds that can actually fly away, but it's hard to do anything to protect the babies.

Health & Support What is going on with my metabolism?!? Jul 03 2009
18:58 (UTC)

So I'm sort of in the same place as you are, superworms. Despite being 18 years old and active, I maintain my weight of 110 pounds at 1500 calories. Last summer I gained almost 10 pounds (intentionally) by eating my maintenance level calories (1800-2000) and then when I didn't stop gaining at around 1700, I cut down to 1500 and that's where I'm stuck at. I know I could use to weigh a little bit more, and I should probably increase my calories and give my metabolism time to catch up...if I gain a few extra pounds in the proccess then it's probably a good thing. But I'm already not 100% comfortable at the weight I'm at, and I can't seem to get past the fear of gaining any more.

Please let me know if you do decide to increase your calories and what happens. Also, have you had your thyroid levels checked? Mine where normal so that's not the problem for me, but you never know.

Health & Support Patterns of eating disorder eating Jun 28 2009

I used to be exactly like this in the years following my eating disorder and recovery. I still sometimes prefer to have my routine and set times/foods for eating but I've gotten sooooo much better about being flexible and not needing to have such strict control over when/what I eat. Really I think it just takes time and practice--I didn't do anything special to help break away from this issue but try to live a normal life an get out there and do things and spend time with friends and family, which inevitably meant encountering situations where I wasn't able to eat on a strict schedule. At first it was really hard but each time it got easier and easier, and now I'm as close as I've ever been to "free eating" since my ed.

Foods healthy options for ice cream? Jun 10 2009
22:49 (UTC)

Where are you going? A lot of places have healthier options now. I was just at baskin robbins and noticed that they have several kinds of sherbets (fat free, usually around 100 calories) and a line of slow-churned ice creams, some with no sugar added. Also, frozen yogurt (also available in non-fat/no sugar added) is a decent choice, or a pre-packaged fruit bar. Remember, one treat won't mess you up, and enjoy it!

Foods how often do your grocery shop?? and when? Jun 10 2009

Too often, lol. We try to plan 2-3 dinners in advance, but it's hard because we are all very busy, and with 2 teenagers in the house and my dad, who has a crazy metabolism, we go through a lot of food. So i'd say usually every few days (at least 3x's a week), sometimes more. We live across the street from Jewel and down the road from TRader Joe's, so it's easy to walk to the store when we need something.

Health & Support URGENT!!!-Foxtail in vagina... (gulp) Jun 07 2009

This is NOT meant to freak you out, but I read online..."Muscular movements (or air flow, in the case of nostrils) can cause the foxtails to continue to burrow through soft tissues and organs, causing infection and physical disruption, which in some cases can result in death." NOT saying that's likely to happen here, but you might want to go to a doctor or ER soon just in case...they'll be able to remove all traces of the plant and tell you about any aftercare that is necessary. Good luck!

I grew an inch and a half from the time I was 15 to the time I was 17, just saying. You can continue to grow up until about 21, although I doubt you'll shoot up 6-7 inches, you never know...you'll learn to embrace being short or at least deal with it as time goes on and maybe you'll be surprised to learn one day that you've grown a few more inches.

I agree with Carmen 100 percent...you are heading down the wrong road, and nobody on CC is going to condone that. At your age you need to be gaining weight...unless you want to look like a small child for the rest of your life and never be able to have children? This is exactly how most eating disorders in teenagers start.

Health & Support Calorie needs change with blood donation? Jun 06 2009
15:04 (UTC)
2

Yup, it's true...donating one pint of blood deprives your body of 650 calories. Considering you are eating the bare minimum, I would definitely increase your calorie intake and take it easy, otherwise you'd basically be leaving your body with 550 calories for the day, assuming you don't do any other activity.

Foods But what if I'm used to 1000 calories? Jun 04 2009
22:43 (UTC)

Yes, you might gain a little weight initially if you up your calories to 1500, but 1000 isn't enough to sustain life off of long term. Your body is starving, so your metabolism has slowed way down to preserve whatever calories it gets. If you slowly increase your calories to maintenaince level (probably 1700-2000 calories), you will gain a few pounds until your metabolism catches up--once it repairs itself you can reduce your intake to 1500 calories MINIMUM and lose weight safetly on this. Otherwise, you'll be stuck eating minimal calories forever. You don't want to be maintaining on like 1200 calories. Good luck!
